  • Hillstream loaches are undeniably a very popular option for smaller aquaria for people looking for a fish that will remove some of the algae build-up. Not quite classed as a nano fish as 2.5inches length for a big female, hillstream loaches are still easy small enough to be accommodated in the majority of tanks; they just have a few requirements in their set up. This video looks at tank design and decor, pH and Temperature and tankmates for this delightful species.
    My favourite fishy stuff! (yes these are affiliate links :) )
    Lights
    Nicrew Classic LED - amzn.to/3fG3Uv6 - Traditional led light that's got a nice high output in a white/cool colour range. Makes plants look extra green.
    Nicrew SKY - amzn.to/3Ktn45U - really nice light for natural looking tanks, also the one I use for filming.
    Filters
    Pat Mini - amzn.to/3fE1u0k - popular for a reason, just a superb little filter thats great for shrimp tanks and fish alike.
    ASAP - amzn.to/3nBuytp - the old favourite and the one i return to most frequently.
    Air Pump
    AP-3 Kit : amzn.to/34UMA3q - Great little air pump, not a silent runner, but has been very reliable for me.
    Tanks
    Scaper 45 - amzn.to/3KBxG2H - a lovely high quality tank that comes with a super strong light, and a decent enough hang on back filter - perfect for newbies and scapers alike.

      Aww thanks Callen, that's really kind of you. I'm hoping I can get back to filming soon as my day job is a bit manic at the moment so it's taking all my time. But more profiles are half-filmed and on the way :D

    These are my favourite fish of all time. I bought 4 for my 200l tank about 2 year ago and was told by the experts that they wouldn't breed based on my setup of plants, gravel and a couple of stones. Nobody told them that, and the 19th new arrival I found last week seems to show no signs of slowing down. Just try catching the little beggars though... that's fun :) They are kept company by a large community of barbs, guppies, ottos, amanno, tetra and glass catfish so get on with everything. After managing to catch a few, I moved them to another planted tank with active substrate... and they are breeding in there now as well. I'm not suggesting that my setup is a working one, but possibly that mine are either remarkably adaptable, or can't read the experts opinions. Regardless though, get them. they can be expensive, but they are so funny and quirky it is well worth it. I'd make sure you're getting the Sewellia lineolata (proper reticulated or sometimes tiger hillstream) rather than the borneo suckers though they are NOT the same fish despite what the fish shop says :)

    • @tinymenagerie
      @tinymenagerie  2 года назад +4

      100% agree. I actually have Borneo suckers purely because the shop thought they were all the same and I didn't notice when they were in the bag. And I actually have two different species of borneo sucker so even they are not all the same :D
      Congrats on the breeding, id love to get mine to make me a few more!

      I've got Hillstream also in my 252L community tank, with 20 cory's, harlequins, Bloodfin tetra, 2 angelfish and kuhli loaches and mine have bred in there and also had young a few times and they breed better in hot water even in the 80's which last summer proved with loads of oxygen and pressure going and they love it plus besides eating my Diatoms in the tank that comes, they're fed Bug bite fine granules and love Tetra tabimin tablets. I've found them lying on my cory's 😅
      So what rules they give you on them is a load of rubbish in my eyes 😉

    Hillstream loaches don't actually need a strong flow, they can live with highly oxygenated water just fine, they don't actually NEED a strong flow.

    I've experienced a lot of what you've mentioned for my 3 Hillstream Loaches. They are the life of my 20 gal. long tank. Always active and moving about. All 3 of mine are very finicky eaters, half the time I don't see them eat anything I put, but they look healthy anyway.

    Here is my planned stocking list for a river aquarium. The river aquarium willl have a high flow stream that circles around an island, the island will be made out of large rocks in the center of the aquarium. I plan to add a wave maker, power head, and canister filter to produce high flow.
    RIVER TANK zebra/leopard danios, cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, hillstream loaches, peppered corydoras.
    It will be an unheated aquarium, the temperature will be at its coldest at around 60-65f(I did some digging in forums, and hill streams do well in the 60s) during the winter, which is well within limits of all of the selected fish. I may or may not have shrimp, depending on how they adapt, I will provide plenty of refuge and plants that they can hang out in. I would add filter feeding shrimp but they need it warmer.
    Thoughts? This idea is based off MD Fish tank’s Rainbow River.

    1000 subs! Love this Vid (as I do all of your videos)! Thank you! I ordered 3 Borneo Suckers from my LFS, only 1 survived the 1st week sadly. Have her/him in a 12 gal, 36" long tank w/filter at one end so it flows all the way down the length of the tank. Hoping it does well here w/my Danio Choprae, Endlers & Blue Dreams.

    The spotted hillstream loach I ordered was DOA and I had pictures and a video but they wouldn't refund me. The pic was not on a paper towel. It was in a bag on its back. That's what most sellers require but this one doesn't. Went to lfs yesterday and picked up the last reticulated hillstream loach they had....cute little buggar. Also picked up 2 gorgeous altum blue angelfish. I already had 1 tricolor angelfish but now he has friends. Also got 18 neons because they were on sale and the best neons I've ever seen

    I would not recommend to keep less than a group of 6 sewellias in a tank, ideally 80 cm and upwards. There is no need to separate microbiotopes, as they are actually very social fish. I know of a guy who emptied his 1200 L tank and collected 2300 (!) sewellias that were all living between the piles of rocks! Anything that forms biofilm, e.g. repashi, snail paste, bacter AE is good, but they also feed on frozen food (copepods, tubifex etc). While some people succeed in feeding tablets, I use to grind the feed and distribute it all over the tank to make sure that everyone gets its share, incl. fry.

    I really like my pair of Hillstream Loaches. They ignored my dragon stone though and cleaned my glass of green spot algae. I have actually increased the natural sunlight their tank receives to improve the algae growth. From what I have observed they ignore my repashy and algae wafers but that could be due to their receiving enough biofilm so far.

    • @LightLegion
      @LightLegion Год назад

      I hope you are right. My solo borneo loach has stopped eating the algae wafers (the one with fish meal), due to increased competition with the guppies.

      @@LightLegion I know have quite a few shrimp and a few large snails. My loaches seem to be doing fine but I do occasionally see them eating algae wafers. Could be related to using a different brand (AlgaeMax by New Life Spectrum) where Algae, seaweed and kelp are the first ingredients. Hard to know. I break up the wafers into rough quarters and spread them throughout the tank

    Thanks. There is a lot of false info about keeping fish. These are super hardy fish. I have four of them in a 1 gallon tank (over three years for three of them). The tank is about 5 inches in diameter and 15 inchs tall with a small carbon and sponge filter powerhead venturi blasting a vertical stream of bubbles and water down the wall. And (shock horror) I do 66% water changes once every 6 -8 weeks (filter/water/bubble flow dependant). I have a short video of them and tank on my channel if anyone doesn't believe me. Only uploaded 2 videos so it won't be hard to find lol.

    Been keeping a pair now for 6 months. I also have a Borneo Sucker in another tank.
    I feed mine Repashy and courgettes that has been prepared frozen and ready to use.
    Starvation is the biggest cause of death when keeping these.
    There is another myth about about them escaping from tanks. I never had this issue in an open top aquarium, They never went above the water line. I can only go by my observation.
