Wow. What a difference when you get the right reviewers for the company. Never a fan of dpreview RUclips channel review. But now it will be my to go channel for review. Nice job guys. Keep it up. And stay original.
Having been an amateur enthusiast with an SLR back in the day and a DSLR up until recently, I lost interest in photography (certainly with the DSLR) for some reason (well, mainly the need to lug bodies and lenses around when I travelled). Now, with a view to getting back into photography by taking advantage of these kinds of cameras that do so much in a single unit, I really appreciate your review. I've just starting looking at the range of bridge cameras out there, and hope to see more from you guys. Clear, concise, honest and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Do you think that a 18-300 or 18-400 can take the good quality like this? Because a read bad opinion for tamron 18-400, and the F is worse than this. I d like to see some (vs) picture of the same sobject.
For a lot of people, this is all the camera you'll ever need. And for all the focal length it has, it may be cheaper in the long run than buying multiple lenses. I'm hoping the next version has the new Sony battery and at least UHS-II SD if not XQD for a damn near infinite buffer. The addition of built in ND filters would be awesome even if a bit of bulk was added. The camera has great ergonomics as long as you're not back button focusing. The MI hotshoe is handy too because it allows you to use anything you already have for other Sony cameras. I was able to use a Phottix Odin II on it which is awesome.
Channel growing???? Of course it's going to grow, especially you are Chris and Jordan. You two guys are a great team and work extremely well together. DP Review is lucky to have you and you them. Your reviews are sensational and the video to match. Keep doing what you are doing and your subscribers will be even larger than they were before. Please don't forget what you always did for the Christmas reviews, when you talked about next years tech over drinks, hilarious. You two are bright stars on the RUclips horizon. Having both in depth photography and video reviews, humour and Canadian make you two my favourite reviewers. You guys and the straight pipes for cars. They also Canadian.
The best camera review I have ever seen. The stills made me want to go out and take pictures. I don't shoot video often, but I really like Jordan's take on the video capabilities of cameras.
I bought this camera a couple weeks ago and i'm really loving it. It's perfect for just walking around town taking shots, and it produces video MUCH better than my rebel camera. It's definitely not a camera for a pro sports photog or wedding photog, but for a guy who likes taking photos and making silly youtube videos it's perfect. Also the electric zoom can be controlled with the mobile app which is nice for someone who films themselves with a camera on a tripod.
Dang, that girl at 13:25 looked like Jackie Kennedy in some awesome jeans. Anyway, price and drawbacks aside, the results from this camera were great in my opinion. I'm not a Sony fan, but they do come out with some very nice gear. Nice review guys.
...Just have to take a moment to say: these guys are absolutely the best camera reviewers out there. DPR was totally right to snag them from TCS. The. Very. Best.

I was able to get one used, a few months after initial release. At about 25% less than retail I think this camera is amazing! And the ergonomics - compared to my a6300 it's a dream to hold.
Now that you guys are doing this show on a weekly basis, I am very happy and hope the pressure to produce high quality reviews won't be too great in the long run.

Thanks Emmanuel! I was feeling the camera on this trip. It does impart a sense of confidence when using it. Nice when a camera just works well. The overwhelming consensus on this camera is that its a solid performer so they did something right. Chris@DPREVIEW
Yeah Chris, I do mean this as a compliment but your photos this time had the highest 'pause' rate for me. Wherein I actually paused the video to just enjoy the wonderful photos. Not saying that your work earlier was poor. Just saying that you've obviously hit a high note. Good to know the camera also felt right. Out of all the RUclipsrs I keep up with, your opinion is the one I trust the most.
I agree with Jordan and thats why I like RX10 Mark 1. 1) Build in ND filter means you never run out of shutter speed and your flash works in the midday sun, and 2) constant 2.8 aperture means your video does not get dark as you are zooming in. RX10 Mark 2 is even better because it adds 4K. Mark 3 and Mark 4 removed the ND filter and changed it to variable aperture cameras.
Great review, so comprehensive. You didn't cover minimum focal distance and macro, though. The price seems outrageous, as it appears to be the same hardware as the last generation with some software features like AF and continuous shooting. Lacking IBIS does not make sense, because when you zoom the picture seems to get soft, would be nice if there's IBIS working in conjunction with OIS. Wish there's manual zoom instead, much faster, but that means the lens wouldn't be able to pack up tightly when you turn it off. I like Jordan's idea of having a 24-200 mm lens with constant aperture instead, because 200 mm seems plenty of zoom, yet 600 mm makes it fun, yet images don't seem that sharp when you zoom all the way out. Maybe a competitor can do a 24-200 mm version, maybe Canon could. I've been anticipating this camera for a long time because I want to see a refresh that includes the new features of the rx100 v, especially the AF, which this camera seems to have outdone it with an A9 like AF. I think it's a great camera, but given the huge price increase, the lack of IBIS, and the softness, the slow on/off and the lack of manual zoom, and the small battery, it still doesn't feel perfected. For the price I want a near perfect product. I don't know, even if it were perfect it's still very expensive. I wonder if they are going to refresh the rx1 next.
OMG I 100% agree with Jordan about the RX10 2. I never owned that one, but I've used it, and I tell you what....I was turned off after they went superzoom and variable. If they did like he said, and made it with phase detect....I'd buy one too!
@@TamanduaGirl the AF of my fz300 is good enough to capture small active birds (like sunbirds) at 600mm equivalent focal length. I even prefer the af speed and decisiveness of my fz300 than my em-1 mark2 which utilize pdaf. Truly impressed by the dfd tech.
After a year of other reviews, you guys still top them all. Good explanation about what we want to know and nothing else. I'm sure you have more info on the website for those who are crazy picky with specs that will just be topped with the next camera.
For future videos maybe think about including Dan with short tech analysis? He could record his segment in SF and then you'd merge it with the Canadian side of DPR. Anyway great video as usual, some amazing photos from Chris (3:00) and Dan (13:14), keep it up.
It's kind of ironic that as a professional, having owned the top Nikon, Canon and even Sony cameras and bevy of lenses (such as the A7RII) I backed away from them all for the RX10MkIV. I have always liked Chris's reviews and while indeed it becomes necessary for various reasons to criticize each and every camera at some point, as NONE are perfect for all purposes, the RX does a remarkable job at being that "jack of all trades" conceptually. As a professional real estate photographer I've been finding it has been easily meeting all my needs providing not only great individual shots but now I'm mastering the use of their in built panorama to my clients delight. With a modest amount of post processing (through my fav ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2018) it renders wonderful final shots for my purpose. I happen to love Landscape work and find that for both that AND portrait work I've been commissioned on, it once again gives me large enough and clean enough files to render superb prints. So I'll take the bites from these pro reviews only to say it beats laying out $7.000 for the A7III options to accomplish the same thing for me in one easy to carry camera.
According to camera price buster the lowest price is £1784. Even if it were 1400 that's still excessive. The camera industry is driving itself into the ground with prices, huge sales drops over recent years and they compound the problem with obscene pricing. Just like the RX100VI - these cameras are not worth their asking price
I think for it to be a good family camera, it needs: 1. videoshoot piano recitals. How does it work in low light, how is the onboard mic, does it overheat, does it have the 30 minute shooting limit, how long does the battery last. 2. Trips to the zoo. It has nice zoom, so its covered. 3. Per wee sports game. The electronic zoom's slowness could be an issue? Good to have the new AF here. 4. Ease of use, intuitive UI, which seems to be a little lacking here.
as stated in the review the one inch sensor impedes its low light functionality. onboard mic is just ok.. use an external mic since it has a jack for it. Yes it has a 30 minute video limit. battery rated at 400 shots. Its a great camera for me. I love it!
I’ve had the RX10 IV for 3+ years and it’s great! I love my A7RIII, but the long zooms are just to large and bulky. This camera is light to carry, the perfect travel camera.
Can the RX10 IV use Catalyst software image stabilization? Apparently it used gyroscopic data to fix the video in post processing. But I can't figure out if the IV allows this? The RX10 II is listed as being compatible, but I can't find out if the IV is.
Would you still recommend this camera in 2022? I'm in the market for a new camera for traveling and such, but I'm not sure if I want to wait for the mark 5 that might not come or one of the new mirror less that I'm not used to.
Great review! There was no mention of what you were using for recording audio though. Particularly on that zoom-in test video. I didn't see a lavaliere mic there, but you had one hidden, obviously. What did you use during that video shoot? I'm looking for a good mic setup for video, so I'd appreciate your response. Thx!
Really great to see how fast u guys put out new videos. Thats what i was hoping for when u switched to dpreview. the time between tcstc videos was kinda long and lonely.
This is as good an ad for Monterey as it is for the RX10 IV. And that means great. I was just in Monterey last weekend and, having been there dozens of times, I never tire of it. And as much as I resist getting a bridge camera (even though I've owned two 1-inch models) I would love to get my hands on one of these Sonys. Good job.
I like the minivan 🚐 analogy. Took me 3 sittings to watch this review. Difficult for me to get intrigued by a minivan. Lol. As always though happy to watch the content!
You guys are showing screenshots from the website, but it's visible too short to get understand what the screenshot is actually comparing (which settings, which cameras in comparison, how the results compare etc.). So either leave out the screenshots or assist the user in understanding what is shown.
Screen doesnt tilt other way? neither does the A7iii, low battery life? carry spares, to me you are reviewing this like it was a pro camera, fact they put a 600mm is amazing and so is the 24fps, if I had seen this before I bought the A7Riii I might have been tempted.
While it's not a true "pro" level camera - it is amazing for what it is and yes, this review is overly negative compared to most. Like the comment about the zoom being slow...really? Compare it to changing a lens. I get so many shots the interchangeable lens crowd will miss entirely.
I just watched the conclusion and it was exactly what i expected to hear. What i didn't expect was for this camera to be one of your first Dpreview video reviews. Have people really been asking for this ? I will be waiting for the Tamron 28/75 f2.8 e mount review and the Sigma 70 macro and 105 f1.4 e mount reviews.
I took a bit of a gamble purchasing the RX10 M4, having never owned a bridge camera before, having previously owned a 350D and a 450D Canon SLRs (and the A1 film camera before that). I'm not much into video, so cannot comment on that authoritatively, but I love the long lens range zoom wise, the autofocus, and the slowmo (though I agree with your criticism of having to prefocus and prezoom then you are locked out). Other than travel, I am mainly photographing cricket, and it's a game where pre-focusing a bowler or a batsman is not a blocker in use. A few things you did miss 1) The eye viewfinder does not show 100% of what gets recorded, I only noticed as at 24mm with the lens hood on the corners of the photo show parts of the lens hood 2) I am unable to do macro photography a la SLR with it 3) Panning photography in bright light is a no no (this is due to the lack of an ND filter that was mentioned in the video context, but I could not shoot panning shots of dragon boats in Thailand in bright sunshine). 4) If using 'Clear Image Zoom' where software interpolates beyond the optical zoom, the autofocus can sometimes fail big time. You essentially lose the auto tracking. But it's the most amazing camera I've ever owned in terms of versatility, perhaps a companion compact camera to fill the holes mentioned above would be the ideal travelling combination
It looks amazing, fully loaded and it's a Sony, so you can't go wrong. I've had a Sony F828 and it's still my favourite since 2004. This Mark IV is on my wish list. 😊
I sold my rx10m3 to buy the M4 specifically for the improved autofocus. But it seems to me that Sony keeps taking features away from this camera. First the loss of natural density filter, now loss of apps. Without the Remote app and time lapse, I would give the M4 a pass
I am not a photographer and have no expertise in the field. I am an IT Director by profession and enjoy exploring features, tweaking, etc. I want to be able to take the best shots I can on an Alaskan cruise we are taking next year. A guy at B&H Photo recommended the Rx10 IV to me based on some things I told him (i.e. I explore features, photograph landscapes, wildlife, sports and evening activities downtown. Objective reviews really help as I zero in on what I want to purchase. Many thanks.
very fair review Chris and Jordan...one of my favorite Sony cameras ever...and Jordan, I am with you -- I would like the RX10II v2 as well!! Give me the PDAF, back button focus, stacked sensor AND the NDs and you've got a fantastic camera! Nice to see you guys at Kando!!
I'm trying to decide between this, the Panisonic Fz2500 and the Nikon P1000. Video will be school events in halls and the occasional sporting days. Primarily will be still shots. I love nature shots, especially birds and long exposures of waterfalls. Given that, i feel the low light capabilities is a must, but sometimes with nature it is impossible to get close to what you are photographing, hence i need a decent zoom with good quality images. Any suggestions or guidance?
What would your recommendation be between the Sony RX10iii, Sony RX10iv, and Panasonic FZ2500? I want this camera specifically to film hunts from open field edges to dense timber.
Awesome! Seems like nothing has changed with the move in terms of your videos! Also, I was really impressed with the sharpness of the video on this camera. Watching on my 4k screen I was leaning in to look at all of Jordan's beautiful sharply rendered stubble!
Can I use this camera with the Seek app in my phone to identify birds insects etc. in real time? Or do I have to manually take a shot and transfer the photo to the phone and then open it in the Seek app?
Can the RX10 IV use the Catalyst image stabilization processing in post processing in software? I know the RX10 II is listed as being able to use Catalyst by applying gyroscopic data to the processing to stabilize the footage in catalyst. But I can't find any information about the RX10 IV.
I'm not buying a power zoom again. They're slow to set precisely, unintuitive, and really annoying to use. Maybe they're nice for smooth video, but I'm a stills grab shooter and I want to get the framing before the moment is gone. These days, the higher availability of mechanical zooms (and focus) seems like the biggest reason to go with SLRs over mirrorless. If I were in the market for a full frame camera system right now, EVF and off-center-framing lover though I am, I would be torn between a A7III with its EVF and wide AF coverage and a D750 with its better control of everything.
Power zoom sucks they played with it in the 90's and it deserves to be sent back there. No substitute for a mechanical zoom it's far more intuitive and responsive. Sadly camera ergonomics have taken a back seat in recent times.
I cut my teeth with Minolta - when Sony bought the camera division I waited to see how things would go. So the first releases of Sony DSLRs backwards compatible with Minolta AF (D) lenses and flashes so all was well. So now my aging Alpha A350 body (14 MP) is now so dated. I've just now started to look around for my successor - this Bridge camera seems like a winner. It will not take the place of the truly Pro stuff but it is way above the typical point and shoot offerings out there. So The RX10 IV is my number one choice at this moment. My not willing to start over with a expensive DSLR set up of body, 6 lenses and high end flash. It would be $10K or more to replace everything I now have but be up to date. So onward with the RX10 (probably) Thank you for this review. I found it very helpful.
Great review as usual, but please don't make the mistake of attributing weak low-light capabilities to a small sensor. The RX10 IV doesn't struggle in low light because it has a small sensor, it struggles because it has a very slow variable aperture f/6.5-f/10.8 lens (35mm equivalent). Please ask your colleague Richard Butler, if you don't believe me. It is complete and utter nonsense to provide the focal length range with 35mm equivalent numbers but not convert the f-stops as well. Again, Richard Butler wrote useful articles about this. BTW, all Sony cameras I've seen produce beautiful colours and the RX10 IV is no exception. Too bad that Sony cameras don't make sense ergonomically for me.
Just bought this camera (May 2023).
It is brilliant. So fast, incredible image quality, fine up to 3200 iso, great 4k video and that lens… peerless.
How do you find the battery life? I've heard not so great things about it.

Well said. This camera is amazing but I felt this review was overly negative.
Minivan of cameras - haha, so true! I got the RX10 III for my mom and she loves it. Great review guys!
Master class on how reviews should be done :)
Love your work guys 👌 great balance of entertainment and information 😃
I subbed bro, thats the least i can do to keep the Real camera's alive.
£1800 for a 1" sensor camera, nice as it might be really the price is completely insane
May be the XH1 Fujifilm is better.
Completely agree. WAY too expensive. Better off getting a ff and cropping.
£1400 now
According to camera price buster the lowest price is £1784. Even if it were 1400 that's still excessive. The camera industry is driving itself into the ground with prices, huge sales drops over recent years and they compound the problem with obscene pricing. Just like the RX100VI - these cameras are not worth their asking price
Mr Baz Reviews SLR HUT £1399 brand new on their website mate ...I tried one today...blew way my Nikon D7200 and Nikon D5600.....in every respect
Love y'all's reviews! So informative and you make it so fun to watch!
I think for it to be a good family camera, it needs:
1. videoshoot piano recitals.
Fu Chen go with the rx10ii for the family aspect, better deal overall.
as stated in the review the one inch sensor impedes its low light functionality. onboard mic is just ok.. use an external mic since it has a jack for it. Yes it has a 30 minute video limit. battery rated at 400 shots. Its a great camera for me. I love it!

Great Vid as usual! More please very soon!!!!
@4:54 FYI, the aperture ring click can be toggled using the switch on the bottom of the lens.
I just bought this one...can't wait to put it to use!! Thanks for the detailed review!
Just got this camera. Surw hope the next version has a few tweeks thats for sure. But I'm excited to put this one to use until the mark V comes out.
Nice review. Also about time DP-review got longer videos about cameras.
Good job.
When can we expect to see a Sony RX10 V ???
Tell me about it!
Fantastic review!! I always learn a lot from you guys and you’re a lot of fun too. I’ve also subscribed.
I just watched the conclusion and it was exactly what i expected to hear. What i didn't expect was for this camera to be one of your first Dpreview video reviews. Have people really been asking for this ?
I will be waiting for the Tamron 28/75 f2.8 e mount review and the Sigma 70 macro and 105 f1.4
e mount reviews.
You shouldn't see the lenshood, are you sure it wasn't screwed on in the wrong orientation? I've done this before with other models.
Would be nice to compare with Panasonic FZ2500, or... gulp, FZ300....

Very nice review. Was this video shot with the Sony RX10 IV?
Is this review video all shot by RX 10 IV?
The entire episode was shot on the RX10 IV. Thanks for watching!
Great video guys. Love the style, keep it up!
very fair review Chris and Jordan...one of my favorite Sony cameras ever...and Jordan, I am with you -- I would like the RX10II v2 as well!! Give me the PDAF, back button focus, stacked sensor AND the NDs and you've got a fantastic camera! Nice to see you guys at Kando!!
is there any time limit in video shooting like nikon coolpix?how you reply sir..thanks
Hi, very good review. How good it is for macro pictures?
I'm trying to decide between this, the Panisonic Fz2500 and the Nikon P1000.
Video will be school events in halls and the occasional sporting days.
Primarily will be still shots. I love nature shots, especially birds and long exposures of waterfalls. Given that, i feel the low light capabilities is a must, but sometimes with nature it is impossible to get close to what you are photographing, hence i need a decent zoom with good quality images.
Any suggestions or guidance?
How about considering: 1) Extra battery 2) leave camera 3) attach a nd filter 4) manual zoom. Versatility - is the idea here.
Just picked one up, for a bridge camera it is great. I love having the reach and I am willing to give up sensor size for what I need it for.
What would your recommendation be between the Sony RX10iii, Sony RX10iv, and Panasonic FZ2500? I want this camera specifically to film hunts from open field edges to dense timber.
Nice to see you have a new haircut Chris!
Nice video man. Love your vids
Which Lens hood do you recommend? Hopefully, no vignetting???
How clean are the mic premaps in this? What's the noise floor like with an external mic?
hi, nikon p1000 is limited in 30 min video shooting, right? how about sony rx10 iv .is the a limit in video shooting?please reply, thanks
Unfortunately, the RX10 IV also has a 30 min recording limit. We’re hopeful this will be removed on the next iteration.
Jordan @ DPReview TV
i love the rx10 ii . its an amazing camera, and man those rx10's just get great video.
Awesome! Seems like nothing has changed with the move in terms of your videos! Also, I was really impressed with the sharpness of the video on this camera. Watching on my 4k screen I was leaning in to look at all of Jordan's beautiful sharply rendered stubble!
Hi. What is the lens hood model? I cannot find anywhere for my toy :(
nice video .....rx10 iv vs rx 100 vi .....which 1 ...please advise...ty
Is there a way to print directly from the camera to the printer ?
Can I use this camera with the Seek app in my phone to identify birds insects etc. in real time? Or do I have to manually take a shot and transfer the photo to the phone and then open it in the Seek app?
Can the RX10 IV use the Catalyst image stabilization processing in post processing in software? I know the RX10 II is listed as being able to use Catalyst by applying gyroscopic data to the processing to stabilize the footage in catalyst. But I can't find any information about the RX10 IV.
Shoul i get this or a a6400 for family and travel pics?
I'm not buying a power zoom again. They're slow to set precisely, unintuitive, and really annoying to use. Maybe they're nice for smooth video, but I'm a stills grab shooter and I want to get the framing before the moment is gone.
These days, the higher availability of mechanical zooms (and focus) seems like the biggest reason to go with SLRs over mirrorless. If I were in the market for a full frame camera system right now, EVF and off-center-framing lover though I am, I would be torn between a A7III with its EVF and wide AF coverage and a D750 with its better control of everything.
So you don't like the zoom ring either?
Power zoom sucks they played with it in the 90's and it deserves to be sent back there. No substitute for a mechanical zoom it's far more intuitive and responsive. Sadly camera ergonomics have taken a back seat in recent times.
power zoom has it places like video production but for still yeah it's too slow.
I found it very helpful.
with the 960fps can you film bullets fired from a gun?? what extra equipment would you need?
Those were some really nice shots all things considered.
It is listed as $2500 in Australia. A7iii body is $3000. I suppose one of the main question would be your budget.
I take photo with this camera .It's amazing for nature , street and Portrait photography.
