I'm a guy and my friends told me it was dumb for a guy to be flexible or learn to do splits. I didn't let them bring me down and it took me approximately 8 months until I finally could do a full split.

really? how well was your flexibility at first?

8 months? I'm sure it should take *significantly* less than dat! I knew a guy at da boxing gym I frequent who was able 2 do a front split in around a single month! He knew how 2 throw some martial arts kicks an' didn't even step into a "dojo"!

I started working on my splits when I was sixteen and it took me less than a year to get a full split. Left, right and middle split. But I tore my ham during that year and took time to recover before I finally got that split. Beginners should go very slowly and easily. Do not rush it or you will hurt yourself. I am now 43 and can still do splits.

One more thing, thanks so much for going into detail about stretches. So many split videos on here simply have girls bouncing into splits within 22 seconds. They never mention breathing or why they are doing certain stretches.

This and the other one for front split are so far the best video tutorials for making into splits I have found on RUclips. What I really liked here is that Jen breaks down the split into several sub-routine stretches, explains each of them thoroughly and makes slow movements, which is extra important for avoiding injuries.
    Thanks Jen!

I still don't have 180 splits, I have like 160ish, but what helps me improove is going down from standing, using socks to slide on the ground, and balance with my hands on the ground too. But I just do that after doing a series of stretches, so that there's no problem.

Thank you so much for doing this video!~ I really love you tone, your energy, and it felt like a splits stretch class. I have committed to becoming a master in salsa dancing and am dancing and perfecting my craft every day for 1 year. Flexibility and doing center and side splits with ease is my next goal. Your video was a perfect introduction and I plan to watch your center split and side split videos consistently for the next 30 days, easing into the splits. I like how you had a very relaxed and easy going way about getting into them, and took a moment in the beginning to address the anatomy of our hips and how important it is to rotate outward. I found that I would often be pushing to get the splits, therefore tensing my muscles. I like this approach of relaxing and enjoying the journey of doing the splits, verses the quick way to splits. Thanks again and I'll be sure to update on the progress :) I'm excited for my new splits class with your vids!

I've always been able to do front-back splits but started to work more on center splits for rock climbing. I found it helpful to work on joint flexibility, in addition to stretching muscles. You demonstrated at the beginning of the video that it was physically impossible to sideway raise your leg higher without rotating your foot, I was in the same situation but have managed to work it all the way upright.

I did most of these stretched when I was in Taekwondo, and I can do a split now. People always asked me why I was so flexible, or why I rarely or had minimal muscle pain when I would work out, and honestly if you just make a routine to stretch 3 - 4x's a week even if it's just short, it will make a huge difference in your life. Thanks for the reminder!

It took me about three years to master my splits, one tip I have is to let go. Don't hold back because you feel pain. With that being said, don't overdo it either. But you definitely have to go just a little further than the day before. Good luck guys ! Xoxo.

    Hey Jen,
I'm a total beginner when it comes to yoga and stretching. I have been working out for the past ten years but not stretching nearly enough and so now my muscles (especially those around the hips and along the back of my body all the way from neck down to calves) are super short and I'm finding I'm starting to get a pain in my lower back. So, I've started doing yoga but as I said I'm a real newbie. Can't get even halfway to the splits, but hey you gotta start somewhere right?
Really like you as an instructor. Keep up the good work :)
