"There has been no sign of a Mississippi morning news anchor woman since she voiced a Snoop Dogg phrase on air earlier this month.
Barbie Bassett has not been on air for the NBC affiliate WLBT since March 8, when her team were discussing the rapper’s addition to his wine line.
Bassett said, “Fo shizzle, my nizzle,” when the idea of a Snoop collaboration with a newsroom journalist was raised. (“Nizzle” is slang for the N-word.

Actually, TYT was missing some critical information here. The same news anchor a few months ago had to make an on air apology for another comment widely seen as racist. This probably contributed to her dismissal. It wasn’t as cut and dry as TYT made it seem. I’ve never been upset with TYT but there’s really no sense in how they portrayed this. It’s shameful.

I don't even think it'd be appropriate to sing a rap song and replace the n-words with 'n-word,' that'll still sound offensive to a Black person, let alone saying a variant of the word. @peterporkeresq.2817 eh, I can't speak for every black person of course, but the rational majority are more than capable of understanding when someone is singing song lyrics vs them being racist. If your intent is to just sing a song and it contains the n-word most people aren't getting bent out of shape over that. But on the same note most people can tell when you're genuinely quoting a song lyric and when you're trying to get away with saying the word. Intent matter.

The reason the meteorologist, Mr. Ellis, had that changed expression on his face, is because he and all of us here in the area knew of her history. I am not speaking to any decisions HR made. That is not a racial statement, all races get to stoned to speak. This is what makes the phrase so appealing across races and ethnicities, it is a shared experience. So the question is really, how do we separate dialects? What is the implication of separating dialects? Do we want to get in to that again? After the failed label of Ebonics, which was perceived as racial profiling, the name was changed to the more accepted AAVE (for now) is it really a good idea to open that can of worms again? Yes it is a slang term, ( did not know what it meant till today, always thought it was a form of 'suck my dick') like a slang terms it only has meaning in it's community. For example, is it offensive or fair to hold folks who are not in the gay community accountable for using gay slang terms?( old one here but, Fish) What about Cajun slang? (Chaoui) Or Native slang? (whitey off the rez.) Ok Whitey off the rez is not slang, but you get my point. Further is it fair to hold some one accountable for something that is ambiguous? I mean is this old white lady hangn' n bangin' wit tha homies, throwin' bonze? Or is she an old white lady using a phrase that has entered the common vernacular? Which brings us to the role of black entertainers, are they not allowed to have success outside of the black community? Should snoop give back all the money that white people paid him just so that they do not appropriate his words?
I get it the N-Word is the ONLY word that a person can loose their job over for saying. Yet is is a word that I hear every single day, in spite of the fact that I refuse to associate with ANYONE who uses it. As mentioned in the video, is using the term 'N-Word' now offensive? I am ok with the fact that we have a double standard when it comes to the 'N-Word' plus I do not like what it means nor what it represents, which is why I choose not to use it, but come on man, this is some republican playbook nonsense. 'Time to move the goal posts'. This has been in common use for what 10, 15, 20 years now? All of a sudden it is offensive?
By the way it was not a substitute for 'nigga' that is in it self a substitute word for the same one 'nizzle' is a sub for.

You're 53 so you were at max in your early 30s when songs with these lyrics were popularized in the mainstream. So... come on. Even when the, "for shizzle my n-" phrase was used in TV and movies, it was ALWAYS portrayed to be wildly inappropriate to say. This goes doubly if it was a non-black person in an office/social gathering saying it. The person saying it was always the butt of the joke and meet with awkward stares, groans, eye rolls, etc.
The context clues have always been there and "I didn't know" really isn't an excuse. Because, how?
I don't think this woman should have lost her job (except that this wasn't the first time she's said something racial and inappropriate), however they should've had a looooong, discussion about the repercussions of appropriating culture, microaggressions, and generally saying things that aren't ok to say.

As a parent of three teenage girls, I am surprised by how many people use words without understanding their impact or meaning. My husband and I monitor our children's speech to ensure they do not use derogatory, discriminatory, or unfamiliar words, instilling the same values I was raised with. Hearing people use such words makes me think of the saying "ignorance is bliss," but in reality, "words matter."
While I personally do not use any derogatory terms for African Americans, I understand the historical context and cultural significance of such language within the African American community. It's a matter of making the best of a difficult situation, also known as "making lemonade out of lemons."
To provide historical context, the United States has a long history of racial discrimination and inequality, including the enslavement of Africans for over 250 years and the continuation of segregation and discrimination through Jim Crow laws. Hip hop and rap music emerged in a response to these social and economic conditions, allowing African American to express their experiences with poverty, violence, and discrimination.
You have the right to speak in any manner that feels comfortable to you, but it is important to recognize the harm and hurt caused by using the N-word. This word carries a long and painful history of oppression, dehumanization, and violence against Black people. For centuries, it was used by white people as a tool to demean and subjugate Black individuals, and even today, its use is a reminder of that painful legacy.
Given the lasting impact of systemic racism on the African American community, including limited economic opportunities and high rates of crime and gang activity, the prevalence of defamatory lyrics can be seen as a reflection of these inequalities and discrimination.
I hope you all have a great day. As for me, I need to get back to my duty of raising my children to become informed and productive members of this American experience.

I didn't know about that older comment. I can't believe someone would *ever* say the word "mammy!" I feel it's almost necessary to apologise for the entire white race after the way we have treated African Americans! And trust me when I say to you that I understand a little about what you go through on a regular basis since the most awful things have been said to me and about me because I'm Jewish. While I would never know the horrors of being pulled over for "driving while black," and the fear that the police must strike into you just being looked at, but I can understand a tiny fraction of the bigotry and prejudice of people against Jews.
Africans have had their own continent since before the human race crawled out of it, and Jews have been beaten from pillar to post and back since antiquity, across all the continents simply because we have different beliefs, and because of a single passage in Matthew, we were called Christ-killers. It's not true. Even the Holy Qur'an says that it isn't true. But even if it *were,* I didn't do it. I love people of all faiths and colors. That is because God loves diversity and we have endlessly complained that we don't understand others. Well ask them! Talk to other people! No one understands that we separate ourselves and white people most of all. I can't relate to bigots because I don't feel better than anyone. We all bleed red blood. We all love our children. We all hate war.
