  • Wealthy people are buying "golden passports" to other countries so they can have a backup citizenship plan. Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks. Watch TYT LIVE on weekdays 6-8 pm ET. ruclips.net/user/the...

"Of all the promotional emails I’ve received, the one that I got in February from St. Kitts and Nevis is probably the strangest. For a limited time only, it said, this small island nation in the Caribbean could offer me citizenship at a $25,000 discount.
Why I wound up getting an email like this is a minor mystery. I cover wealth, and I find the logistics of being rich extremely amusing. But being able to drop $125,000 on a second passport - which was the sale price - and laughing about it are not the same.
More likely than not, the sender was trying to tap the hottest new market for secondary citizenship: the United States. Henley & Partners, the world’s premier passport brokering company, said that in 2022, more Americans inquired about citizenship by investment - programs that allow people to pay for citizenship instead of gaining it by demonstrating their ties to a country - than in any previous year. Americans were also the leading nationality for submitting applications."

Thumbs up to Anna for saying that the top risk-takers are really risk-averse and will leave the country at the first hint of unrest. They only want tax breaks and are hardly patriotic. But look at the irony that they are the ones who have provided donations to the "party of unrest" in the first place.

Many Americans who can afford it marry Europeans to get an EU passport. Italy went even further and any Italian-American who can prove that they are of immigrant descent can easily apply for Italian citizenship. British citizenship is also very popular with Americans. So, we left the U.S. and are in the middle of becoming citizens of a Latin American country for just these reasons.
As a married lesbian couple, we were increasingly attacked and threatened in rural Washington. We moved there from our safe oasis of Santa Cruz CA because of financial reasons. We figured we'd be safe living between Portland and Seattle. We were wrong. Watching the direction the U.S. is moving in, we decided we needed to move somewhere safer.
We've never felt safer than we do right now. It's unbelievable, the lies we are told in the U.S. about other countries. My parents(in their late 70's) were so fearful about our decision. They honestly didn't believe there would be modern conveniences here, like internet, and that we'd be totally unsafe. No matter how much we explained our discomfort and danger in the U.S., I don't really think anyone in our families understood.
We're not rich enough to "buy" a passport so it will take time. Time well spent!

Do your neighbors threaten to shoot your dog? Do your neighbors knock on your door to tell you that you will be the first people they shoot when the new civil war starts? Is your government rolling back rights that affect you negatively? Are you blind to the experiences of others around you or you just don't care? Easier not to see, I guess.
We moved from Santa Cruz bcs we couldn't afford CA any longer. Your description of Santa Cruz is 🙄 eyeball roll worthy only.

    • @DavidRichardson153

As a left-wing American who moved to New Zealand, I have had the unpleasant experience of running into a few of these @$$holes, mostly during the first wave of the pandemic. One of them, who said he has been in NZ since 2017 (I arrived in 2019), eventually tried to accuse me of being a sheep for taking Covid seriously, that Ardern was secretly taking over everything - you know, the usual BS (and this exchange was around when the vaccines started becoming available in NZ). I snapped at him and said:
"So what the f^^^ are you doing here then? You have been here for much longer than me, and while you were here, you said you voted for Trump and the Republicans while here. So what the f^^^ are you still doing here? Why the f^^^ aren't you back in the US, where your dear 'leader' and party are supposedly fighting against what you are crying out against and could use your help - help that both of them have regularly been calling you for? Do you not trust your them enough to stay in US and help make that country great again? Or do you know actually better than trust anything they say or do? So could it be that you are here for the next victim of your side's terrorist schemes, to turn New Zealand into a bankrupted sh^thole nation like the US, which was what the previous government here tried to do? And while you are here claiming to not trust the vaccines, your party's representatives and senators were the very first to get them - and unlike your f^^^ing stupid conspiracy theories, there actually is verified public record of them getting vaxxed. So if you truly believe that what is happening in the US is how things should be done here, then you, as a supposedly proud American, should just STFU and let the US do what it always does: have the CIA depose yet another left-wing government through a violent coup and install a puppet dictator that will sign over everything to American business interests."
And yes, I do hope to become a naturalized Kiwi.

There are other countries like ireland and italy where you can get citizenship of those nations if you can prove that at least one of your ancestors are from that country. There are also countries where you get the citizenship if you were born in that country. The thing you need to bear in mind is that if you are a citizen of a country that doesnt recognise dual citizenship, and you acquire another citizenship, you automatically lose the citizenship of the country of which you used to hold citizenship. you also have to bear in mind that, besides the rights you are entitled to as a passport holder of the country of which you acquire citizenship, you could also have responsibilities, such as conspription in the armed forces, or jury duty

My only hassle was the AMERICAN GOVERNMENT, who delayed me HOURS coming home into the US. They tried to get Americans to purchase Passports, TO ENTER THE US. Then they told the Mexican Officials, "If you require a VISA, you can make MORE MONEY". VISA requires Passport, more money for US. Avoid the line, (more money for US), buy Sentry Card.

    Options to emigrate to:
Germany has a fairly large population of American workers and students. Their immigration policies are easier to get through than the Nordic countries, plus the German language is easier to learn. The French have been accepting Americans for years, especially since Trump. It's also slightly warmer than Germany. Spain is also a good option, and is even warmer than most of France. It's pretty popular for Americans who can speak Spanish, being able to fit in easier. The accent is different, but it's one less thing to worry about when moving. Greece and Italy are beautiful places to go, but they have issues if you want to live there. Italy has an amazing train system to the point that their domestic flights are nearly non-existent.
I can certainly understand wanting to live in the northern European countries. The Netherlands have figured out city design and have some of the most liveable cities in the world. Finland has the best education system in the world because they have made private schools illegal. If the rich want their kids well educated, they need to make sure everyone's kids are well educated. The best school for every child in the country is their local public school. Even their head of state will send their kid/s to their local public school.

China is an issue, but not much of one, they're close but far enough away that we don't have to worry about them as much; we also have the US and the UK as close allies so it's a lot harder for China to throw its' weight around.

A Dual Citizenship is always a good option, however, it is a two edged sword. A Jewish-American went to Israel to visit. While there, a war broke out. He was conscripted into the Israeli Army. After serving his time, he tried to return to the US. He was DENIED entry, because he was no longer an American. Serving in a foreign military cost him his US citizenship. VOTING in a foreign country also EXCLUDES you from US citizenship. You have to be careful.

Portugal requires you to have the equivalent of their minimum wage in income, which is about $900 per month, depending on the exchange rate. This is good for retired people and digital nomads. Spain, it’s around €28,000 per year. I’m eligible for an Irish passport because both of my grandparents were born there. We do this for healthcare purposes and because we cannot afford to retire in The States with our social security at risk.
This took years of research and planning so you don't have to rich in order to make this happen. It's a good thing I was in Europe when I fell ill as I'm now being treated for Stage 3 cancer there instead of the States at a fraction of the cost. I'm only in my 40s and this was unexpected and devastating. Although the US funnels tons of money into research and innovation none of the citizens can gain access to it. So we have to go elsewhere and that's why medical tourism is so huge. Instead of the comments on here mocking us for taking this route...perhaps ask us how we did it. 🤷‍♀️

My ex is Jamaican (1st gen American), our kids half Jamaican, and she's working on getting dual citizenship for herself, our kids, and her other 1st gen American family members, because THIS is a shitty country for black ppl and even tho there's a ton of negative info, news, propaganda about Jamaica and other black countries, not all of them are bad, and Jamaica is a GREAT country for black ppl to flee to when they're tired of America's BS!! I can't get dual citizenship with Jamaica for myself, but I and other non-jamaican heritage blacks can still flee there! I'll probably retire there in 15yrs, if not sooner.
....Oh 1 more thing, if you can get Jamaican citizenship, then congrats because a Jamaican passport is BETTER than an American passport! If you don't believe me, then ask the rich ppl that get it for long term access to other beautiful countries, instead of short term vacationer access.
But don't worry if your not Jamaican and not rich, like me. If you have a trade skill, like musician, like myself, you can get a Jamaican worker passport which is almost as good. It's not easy, but I'm gonna put in the effort to get it even tho I'm not Jamaican.

@@eric2500 I literally said, "not all of them are bad.", which means some of them are bad countries. You just had to leave that comment about Haiti. You couldn't resist reminding people about one of the bad ones. Which either tells me your reading comprehension isn't good, because I never said all black countries are good, or you're a part of the problem in this country and in other countries that's always gotta draw attention to the bad black countries instead of showcasing and promoting the good black countries. You're one of the people that has to keep the bad countries fresh in other people's minds. You won't let them forget about it. Why do you do that? Because no one forgets how bad Haiti is. It was absolutely Not necessary for you to remind anyone of that. But most people forget there are good black countries, because of people like you.

I lived in Canada for 2Y, and was surprised at how much poorer people were in my (mid-upper) tax bracket, teaching at a top university. Canada does a good job of hiding it but canadians can buy only about 1/2 of what americans can buy with their incomes - when they go shopping prices are much higher and to add insult there is the 15% GST+PST sales taxes ... The only things that are not expensive are a few local goods e.g. houses, not cheap but not as outrageous as most imported goods. In Canada you see a lot of interest in vintage furniture, money that looks brand-new with 30-yr old serial numbers (because money circulates so slowly), and people waiting for their parents to die so they can get a house, etc., it's hard to make a life for yourself 0-70 yrs old in Canada without an inheritance ... Remember that Canada is the birthplace of the luxury honda civic model (not for sale in the usa)! I finally left Canada complaining that if I stayed it would turn me into a republican!

You also ignore the fact that most USA young people - and many middleaged people - have no hope of entering the housing market, and rely on family wealth for a chance at more wealth. The statistics on that are clear, upwards mobility has slowed dreadfully over the past 40 years. I guess you haven't noticed, not being in a lower tax bracket.

Every single day I thank heaven I had the opportunity to grow up in a sane and decent society, one with a delightful, broad outlook and sure, we have our challenges as a nation, we have our demons to confront, but we do and all the while I see a maturity and a kindness and beauty that is youthful yet wise. I love this land, its amazing beauty, its wildlife, its sunrises and sunsets, its coastal cities and the desert outback and, most of all, I love the people. I'm so truly lucky, I found home. 🇦🇺
