If you're not starting Fighter/Artificer/Sorcerer for Proficiency in CON, Monk's will eventually get it at 14th level through Diamond Soul.
Mist Stance, Gaseous Form, uniquely benefits this Monk. Unarmored Movement increases the 10-ft speed and allows you to float away for a short rest, restoring all ki. You can't attack or cast spells, but you can use Water Whip or Unbroken Air. They're not attacks nor spell.
Fireball is great and except for the ginormous ki costs, you'll never be upset with it because it's awesome. The same with Burning Hands, Thunderwave, or Cone of Cold but its best to have one AoE. The Monk's Ki pool and the cost of Elemental Disciplines will start to feel like a Warlock's Pact magic.
As for Elemental Attunement, its commonly compared to Prestidigitation. However, this Elemental Discipline is not a Spell, therefore, no spell components and impercivable. In the hands of a creative player, it will prove useful. I'm a particularly fond of shaping stone rings that can fit around body parts and the DM deciding what happens when the stone reforms itself from a ring to a stone.
As for which Race, High Elf would do the trick for the Feats: Elven Accuracy & Fey Teleportation. You're still a Monk who could use DEX for attacks. Any elven race would do but high elves has access to Fey Teleportation, with it a Misty Step that recharges every short or long rest. Atop of that, High Elves provide weapon proficiencies & a Wizard Cantrip. If you know the campaign is low level or you're stuck below 5th level for awhile, Booming Blade is great. Green Flame Blade is great too, but INT modifier is usually not enough to warrant viability. You could ask the DM if it could key off of WIS, if not, any spell that isn't an attack or spell save works great.
With the monks movement of just take mobile cus you could cover just so much ground. Not needing to use disengage you could use step of the wind as opposed to a spell slot.
There is a lot to kinda figure out here. I mean booming blade and green flame blade only become really great after level5 otherwise your just hoping for the extra damage to roll in.
@@TheSinisterheroes Shadow Touch's Invisibility Spell has the same conditions like Gaseous Form, ending early if you make an attack or cast a Spell. But here you can Hide (& short rest for the entire hour), and use Unbroken Air or Water Whip.
Gaseous Form let's you occupy a foe's space to Unbroken Air them up and make them fall Prone. Or Water Whip while flying to pull foe's up and make them fall Prone.

Honestly i do like the theme of this subclass and avatar the last airbender in my opinion is peak entertainment i just wish that the subclass was better it's just underwhelming in my opinion
I agree there is just more that’s needed for this to be brought up to par. Lets hope the next edition dose something for it.
Personally, it was a great mistake to let discipline fuelled by KI which is not so big and needed by many other features.
I am not sure if I like ONE dnd 4 way monk as much as Monk core for ONE dnd, even though I cannot explain well.
I think you’re really on to something. Having a separate resource would make this subclass a lot better.
I like the idea of a spell casting monk but it takes too much ki to use their abilities. I think the ascendant dragon monk does the elemental monk better.
The UA for the upcoming PHB made elements monk great.
The ascendant dragon is really strong. If you put a monk on the one D&D progression there even better.
I really hope they keep pushing it to a viable place cus the monk is just one of those classes that needs to attention
