Love Rick’s eloquent defense of Dark Side of the Moon. I once had a friend tell me it was “too commercial”. Actually yes that is kind of true as Rick says so well-it was just commercial enough to be that perfect gateway drug. It was that for me ever since one day back in 1981, when my dad told me if I did some chores and helped with this massive cleanup job, he would take me to the record store and I could pick out any album. Like many other 12 year olds at the time, I chose Foreigner 4. But my dad said he wanted to get me another album, his favorite album ever and it was Dark Side of the Moon. I was stoked because even though I didn’t know what it was or much about it all (I had heard “Money” on the radio but I didn’t make the connection until I actually played the record) I loved the mysterious album cover and it just seemed cool. Well when I got home I immediately listened to the Foreigner album and thought it was pretty good-I liked the hits. But then I put on Dark Side and it changed my life forever. It’s the reason I’m here in the RUclips comments watching you guys. It’s the reason I have become the person I am today (for better or worse). I have liked other Pink Floyd albums more than this in the past and even now because that’s what happens with a band this good. I like other bands maybe more than Pink Floyd now.But this will always be the most important album to me and I am so grateful to my dad for introducing it to me that day.

@RickLaBonte Ah Rick, what a man! One Live Badger. Thank you for giving this a mention. I take you to Glasgow, Scotland, 12th March 1973. I'm at school, aged 13. A friend greets me in the morning with news that the Black Sabbath gig he'd attended on the Friday just past, was amazing (ticket price, just under 1 dollar...yeah, I know!!). I wasn't big on the Sabs at that point, more a Floydian. "I also saw a band you'd definitely like...the support group, Badger". I wasted no time and marched off at the end of the school day, to pick up the album. Took a few stores to find it, but I did. So, not only do I have the vinyl, replete with gatefold sleeve and pop-up badger, but the Atlantic record labels are on the wrong sides! Always, always loved that record. I don't think there's been a better live debut anywhere (there may not be that many!) but it was a brave thing to do...and it so worked. I do also have a 7" promo vinyl of White Lady, the title from their 2nd that you mentioned. It's fine, but Badger it ain't. Something derailed them (Allen Toussaint?) after their debut release and they lurched in a whole other (entirely wrong) direction. Hey ho....we have one amazing album, for which I am grateful...

great pick Ken!!!! i knew you'ld pick Brain Salad but yeah, Brain Salad and Fragile are my favorite prog albums and i'm still amazed everytime i drop the need on that album that it came out in '73, to me it's flawless and seamless like Floyd's DSOTM and it flows perfectly and always seems to be over before it starts-it strange and very few albums do that for me and have that hypnotic flow. Kind Of Blue is another album that flows like that for me. AND, it's one of my favorite album covers as well. thanks Pete, awesome show as always gentlemen!!!!!!!! \m/\m/

That Enrico Rava album is a masterpiece, Ken. Love that you did the list the way you did, I don’t care if it broke the rules. *Anyone who wants to listen for free:* I know that album is on Apple Music, which means it’s almost definitely on Spotify as well (and I’m sure it’s uploaded to RUclips, but I always prefer the sound quality on Apple Music).

Larks by Crimson would be my pick, Wishbone Four would be my nearly and Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic would be my wild card - a more stripped back lineup but with some sounds and ideas well ahead of rock and pop. Progressive Funk.
And Dark Side is only commercial because its Dark Side...its still - if you can detach yourself....a really weird album, with ideas up the wazoo and a real attempt to make a soundscape not done before. You cant - now that teens wear the tee who dont even know the record - criticise it for bein commercial. Its not We Cant Dance...

Personally I find J.A. Seazer to be a bit of a mixed bag, along with Tokyo Kid Brothers and Geinoyamashirogumi. I like parts of each of their albums a lot and other parts not so much. These are theatrical oriented bands and a lot of what is going on is lost on Western ears. Take Geinoyamashirogumi's "Osorezan" - first side is incredible. Second side leaves me scratching my head.

@@kengolden666 Hi Ken! I'm really glad that you know about J.A. Seazer and Geinoh Yamashirogumi!!!
Most people in the west have never heard of them. They are two of my favorite bands/artists!! They don't sound like any other music i've heard! When it comes to Seazer I think Shintokumaru and Kokkyou Junreika are his masterpieces! I love the theatrical aspect of the music! It's kind of a wierd mix of opera, psychedelic rock, japanese folk and zeuhl! I think Shintokumaru might be the best prog album ever made. And it doesn't even exist on ProgArchives, that's how obscure it is. As for Geinoh Yamashirogumi I love the entire osorezan album and most albums I've heard by them!!
I wish more people knew about them. You should give Shintokumaru as a homework asignment to someone! It would be interesting to see what they think! I bet Pete wouldn't like it, but maybe Chuck would. And you should do an episode of in the prog seat all about japanese prog were you could talk about some of this music! Flower Travellin Band and Osamu Kitajima are two other great artists! There is so much great music from Japan!!

2012 re-recording of The Journey to the Centre of the Earth mentioned by Ken is brilliant! Not only because of the quality of the recording, which obviously lacked in the original, but also because of all the added material. Or, better to say, restored material, which was meant to be there from the beginning, but was cut in the 73 due to the format and budget limitations.

Usually on these shows there are a fairly large number of albums I note to go and try out, on this one however I already have most of the main picks. Big props to Ken, then, for his hardball list. And Ken hit the nail on the head with Brain Salad Surgery, great to also see him flying the flag for Tales from Topographic Oceans. And I have to agree that Rick's 6 wives has never been bettered - he's come close with a few, and that's one album I've had since xmas 1974 that I still listen to regularly.
Nice to see Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Argent and Badger getting a look in as well.
There's a book on Sonicbond called '1973 The Greatest year of progressive rock', most of the albums featured in it were mentioned except for Greenslade's first, Gong's Flying Teapot, Can's Future Days, Kayak's See see the Sun and Caravan's For Girls who Grow Plump in the nIght.
1973 was the year I started at secondary (high) school - it was an all boys boarding school in a small English town (although I was what they called a 'day boy' as I lived in the town and was able to go to it as I had somehow managed to pass the '11 plus' exam). My class mates all had older siblings so through them I got to know about much of the music I still listen to today. By Christmas 1974 I had been gifted some of the albums mentioned tonight - notably the ELP, Yes and Rick Wakeman - Genesis I got for xmas '75. Most of the rest followed over the next 48 years.

I am one of those that Dark Side of The Moon drove me away from Pink Floyd. I was sick to death of Money, I loved my weird, cryptic, spacey early Pink Floyd. I resented (wrongly), that my eclectic out there band was now wildly popular and on the radio every 30 minutes. Then I hear Animals and thought this is pretty good after all. Then came The Wall, back on the radio every 30 minutes again. Back in my bad books. I revisited The Wall and learned to appreciate it, maybe it is time to revisit Dark Side of The Moon.

Money was obviously a successful single but I think it stands out like a sore thumb on that album. It doesn’t really fit in with the rest of it. To me the album takes a down turn going from The Great Gig in the Sky to that, obviously in vinyl record days it would be the start of a new side.
The rest of the album is weird, cryptic and spacey.
