The new format really kicked in on this one. The conversational style helped immensely. As different from the hosts the music I enjoy might be, it is the way you articulate your favorites that keeps me coming back.
1973 continued the rest of the world beyond the US and UK joining the musical conversation. Probably how McCartney ended up in Nigeria, following in the footsteps of Ginger Baker. And Eno would find his way to Germany soon after. And Paul Simon's Rhymin'' Simon stretches beyond the Bronx.
I do like Hard Nose The Highway, it's Kermit cover and all, but can't fathom it being enjoyed more than St Dominic's Preview.

Great list. Great year. 1973 is absolutely one of my favourites. It was the year I properly discovered music, though I was too young then to discover all of the great music released that year. A lot of that came later. Some of it is still coming.
But the defining and no-contest No.1 album of 1973 for me is Aladdin Sane. To this day, I know that album word perfect, and back to front, because I played it relentlessly on cassette in the winter of 73-74 behind the closed door of my bedroom in a desperate attempt to keep lyrics such as 'Suck, baby, suck, give me your head' and 'He flexes like a whore/Falls wanking to the floor' from the ears of an Irish Catholic mother who, had she heard them, would have come at me with the holy water in a spray can, fetched a priest or maybe even organised an actual exorcism.
You don't want to know what happened to the cover of my elder brother's copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Houses Of The Holy got more than a few concerned looks too. Being subversive and breaking taboos was hard work in 1973. Took more than tats, piercings and pronouns.
I doubt I could meaningfully put together a top 25 album list, but Roxy Music's Stranded - Brian Eno and I agree, it is their best - and For Your Pleasure would also be very close to the top.
I know exactly what Jason means about Dark Side of the Moon. It's now more an edifice of engineering to be admired than music to be enjoyed. Maybe it should only be open to tourists from now on. Can't agree about Hard Nose The Highway being better than St Dominic's Preview, the title track of which is better to my ears than the entirety of Hard Nose (with its startlingly bad artwork and hippy drivel liner notes). Definitely do agree about Queen's debut. Not sure they ever bettered it, but that's mainly because of 'Liar'.
Oh, and Slade were definitely more the kids' end of the glam spectrum. Mott The Hoople were the pasty-faced, dissipated, dirty dog end of the spectrum. So, you know, fun. But Slade were great live, apparently. According to some, much more reliably so than T.Rex by the mid-1970s. By which point Marc was often Champagne cheery but not always match fit. Really not persuaded Tanx is better than Electric Warrior. Nope, sorry.
Think it's high time I properly investigated Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. See, another actual TLM prompt. You are a bona-fide public service.
Final thought about 1973 (for now): throughout the summer, there was just no escaping The Carpenters' 'Yesterday Once More', Elton's 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' and Bowie's 'Life on Mars'. Told you it was a great year.
    Look forward to Joe's.
    Merry Christmas.

    1. Yessongs -Yes
    2. Time Fades Away -Neil Young
    3. Live -Genesis
MY BAND OF THE YEAR: The Wailers
MY ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Elton John
1973 continued a string of fantastic years (though I consider it a small step down from the years that immediately precede it). I hated leaving out so many great acts- John Cale, Allman Bros., Judee Sill, Fleetwood Mac, Paul Simon, ELP, Aerosmith, Mike Oldfield, Faust, Queen, Hall & Oates, Doobie Brothers, Al Green, The Eagles, Alice Cooper, Little Feat, Toots & The Maytals, The Faces, Joe Walsh, Mott the Hoople, The Mothers, Nektar, Status Quo, John Prine, Budgie, Funkadelic- but them's the breaks.
The Wailers win my band award for their pair of paradigm-shifting reggae albums (Catch a Fire made my top 5, and Burnin' just barely missed my top 25).
Elton John is my solo artist of the year for dishing out two classic LPs of his own (GYBR made my top 5 and 'Don't Shoot Me...' snuck into my top 20).

Great list, the new #1 makes perfect sense for you. This year was a lot of fun to deep dive and I did a bigger one than I usually do with a final tally of 209 albums. There were a few exciting new discoveries in there even if my top 10 was pretty well set from when I made it this summer for my own top 10 video. Ultimately it was great as always to explore the year a little more deeply, especially since I had already recently listened to a lot of the bigger albums of the year before the dive started.

What a fantastic year. To my thinking, it was the last of the "60's overhang" years. The early 70's had a late 60's feel about them. But this aesthetic ended after 1973. After that, the 70's ambience really kicked in. As a child back then I remember being very disappointed with music after 1973/74. I yearned for the wilder, less conventional music of '70, '71, '72 and '73. So in a way, '73 was the last gasp of that counter-cultural period. Cheers.

For me St Dom comes in with Veedon Fleece and Into the Music as just behind the big two of Astral Weeks and Moondance. But as always great entertainment. 1973 was a wonderful year for music. I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)!
    Yes, it's true. I watched Joe's _'Top-'73'_ first.
    Then, I saw Jason's previous/same.
Figured I better watch this one too.
Jason's take on 'Tanx' was spot on!
(though it STILL missed MY Top 25)
    He listed a few LPs others wouldn't consider. (e.g. Queen's 1st)
(IMHO) That isn't a 'grab' for _'insightful-elitist'._ That is just plain guts!
re: 'Mott'. Jason is too young to know Ian Hunter had reached a *'Moment-Of-Songwriting-Clarity'* at this time! How did you know that rather 'nuanced' tidbit? (Good Job!)
This was a year when the _'Old-Guard'_ was starting to show the length of their teeth. And, the next gen. was emerging.
    There's always exceptions. (Stevie Wonder)
I usually welcome the impossible task of _'ranking'_ in order of importance. For some reason; I just couldn't do it here.
    *Dave's Top 25 Albums - 1973:*
    (in no particular order)
    'Montrose' (Montrose)
'Houses Of The Holy' (Led Zeppelin)
'New York Dolls' (New York Dolls)
'Raw Power' (Iggy & The Stooges)
    'Chicago VI' (Chicago)

    'For Your Pleasure' (Roxy Music)
    'Brothers & Sisters' (Allman Brothers)
    'Goats Head Soup' (Rolling Stones)
'Still Alive & Well' (Johnny Winter)
    'Aerosmith' (Aerosmith)
    'Sabbath/Blood/Sabbath'(Black Sabbath)
    'Tres Hombres' (ZZ Top)
    'Greet/Asbury Pk' (Bruce Springsteen)
    'L.S. Pronounced..' (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
'The Dark Side Of The Moon' (Pink Floyd)
'Let's Get It On' (Marvin Gaye)
    'Aladdin Sane' (David Bowie)
    'Goodbye Yellowbrick Rd' (Elton John)
    'GP' (Gram Parsons)
    'Quadrophenia' (Who)
'We're An American Band' (Grand Funk)
'Live At Carnegie Hall' (Bill Withers)
    'Bloodshot' (J. Geils Band)
I can guess someone's age based solely on what they say about 'Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath'.
Like many 'TLM' fans; I'm genuinely concerned for your future w/Kramser's exit. (so far/so good)
*BUT:* I DO see a _'chink-in-the-armor'_ possibility coming. The 'jokey'/'friendly' barbs designed to take someone down is an important _'sideshow'_ to the whole presentation. If done well; It's miniscule/funny/& not really insulting at all.
Two guys pointing at the third guy is good. But, with only two guys; The dynamic isn't really there anymore. Or, certainly not as good.
As I say; Don't really see a problem yet.
    But, it's something to ponder.
(Ol' Boomer still here. Used to Zoom/Skype for business. Hey. Hey.)
    *ROX ON!*

1973 was a really great year. Number One here is truly number one, in that I'm sure I listened to it way more than all the others. Then another ten in no particular order, but all meaningful to me.
    1. Over-Nite Sensation, Frank Zappa (The Mothers)
    2. Countdown to Ecstasy, Steely Dan
    3. Aladdin Sane, David Bowie
    4. Shotgun Willie, Willie Nelson
    5. The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
    6. Goat's Head Soup, Rolling Stones
    7. Band on the Run, Paul McCartney and Wings
    8. Honky Tonk Heroes, Waylon Jennings
    9. Brain Salad Surgery, Emerson Lake & Palmer
    10. Selling England by the Pound, Genesis
    11. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John

Extra points for the unexpectedly random mid-video cutaway of Jason in his study, like Alastair Cooke in Masterpiece Theatre. I was almost expecting him to bust out some tasty licks, but it appears he was using the acoustic guitar as more of a prop (a la George Michael in the "Faith" video).

    10 favorites of the year:
    10. Living in the Material World: George Harrison. A nice, mellow follow-up to the bigger (and admittedly better) All Things Must Pass.
    9. Desperado: Eagles. The only one of their albums that actually feels like an album.
    8. GP: Gram Parsons. The first half is better than the second, but it's an incredible solo debut.
    7. Shotgun Willie: Willie Nelson. One of his finest collections of songs.
    6. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Elton John. The rare double album that deserves to be a double album. The opening track, the title track, and Harmony are the highlights for me.
    5. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player: Elton John. I couldn't leave either one off the list. I just find this one a little more streamlined with some of the prettiest melodies of his career. High Flyin' Bird is in contention for my favorite Elton snog.
    4. Innervisions: Stevie Wonder. The next 3 albums could change depending on the mood. Pure Stevie Wonder from start to finish.
    3. Goats Head Soup: The Rolling Stones. My favorite Stones album. Heartbreaker, Angie, 100 Years Ago, and so many underrated classics.
    2. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle: Bruce Springsteen. A great improvement over his debut, which I think is quite good but underwhelming when compared to his whole catalog. Even if I like his next run of albums even better, I still get hyped every time Rosalita starts, and New York City Serenade and Sandy set a beautiful scene like no one else can.
    1. Holland: The Beach Boys. Not just my favorite Beach Boys album, but one of my top 5 albums of all time. This album connects with me in a way that few others can, from the sparse beauty of Big Sur and Steamboat to the depth of The Trader and the irresistibly catchy California Saga: California. They never had another album like this one.
A few honorable mentions: Sweet Revenge (John Prine), Hard Nose the Highway (Van Morrison), Pronounced (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Holland is one of those albums I wish I liked better than I do. I consider "Sail On, Sailor," "The Trader," and "Funky Pretty" to be the highlights, but I've never been able to truly love the rest, no matter how many times I revisit it. Pink Floyd's The Final Cut falls into that same category for me: a couple-three good tracks surrounded by stuff that's never really clicked.

Great list again Jason. A lovely surprise to see Mott at number one. It wasn't the most creative or artistic release in '73, not even close, but it was a marvellous diary of a band at their peak. Hunter never wrote better songs and lyrics, that capture the highs and lows of the rock and roll circus. Such a pity that they were falling apart even as they made their best record. The follow-up was good but the magic was here.

“Wakin’ and Bakin’ with Ricky Wakeman!”
(It’s a funny title since he was the ONLY member of 70s Yes who was NOT a partaker of the “Sweet Leaf.” Two! Two!! Two jokes in one!!!)
At any rate, the reason l bring up Wakeman is to just point out that he only played keys on “Sabbra Cadabra” on your 1973 Sabs slab o’ wax. The keys on “Who Are You” are actually played by Ozzy, Tony & Geezer. As you stated with Zep, these cats were also growing in leaps and bounds with every release. Although on vast amounts of “Bolivian marching powder,” the Black Sabbath dudes were and are all talented musicians and songwriters. And Bill Ward’s drumming is also magnificent.
I hate to be a stickler on details, but my OCD forces me to nitpick at times. Keep up the sterling work men!
Cheers from Noo Yawk ova heyah.

PS: l miss the subtle snarkiness of Dr. Kramzer, but you cats will be fine without him. (“Nothing lasts forever, even cold November Rain.”) In fact, does this mean that you cats may dig into some 70s and 80s fare that he was vocally against, like Styx and other AOR acts of that time period?

@@davidbeckman7925 I liked it a lot! Only a couple of notches below the standards of the ‘75 self-titled. No lower than 3.5 stars for sure; I will have to give it a few more listens, but pretty sure it will get to 4, and maybe even 4.5 stars. Should be considered part of the FM canon for sure.

Jason... please give Slade another chance... WITHOUT THE VISUALS. "How Does it Feel" "Won't Let it 'appen Again" "In For A Penny" "Everyday"... all great songs IMHO. Not much of an albums band but lots of songs sprinkled throughout. 👍

NUMBER ONE: MIKE OLDFIELD Tubular Bells - not surprised you haven't picked this one. It might be a UK/US thing but also because it is my favourite album of all time. But hey, there's no accounting for taste.
Probably the closest we have been in all the deep dives. 8 of your choices are in my top 10 despite the variance in placement. It might be that at this stage in the 70s despite the sheer volume of greatness, there are still some indisputably great albums that gravitate towards consensus. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to Joe's

No one mentions Goats Head Soup by the Rolling Stones? It's a drop in quality from their previous several albums, but would definitely be in my top 25.

Pretty good list but no Quadraphenia is a big miss for me. 5* top 5 album of all time. I also think you may not have heard the best of Slade, some of their deep cuts are amazing, but always a better live band that on record so also check out their live album Slade Alive, it’s killer. Slade in Flame (1972) is also a great rock film.

I think Slayed? is there one great studio LP. I agree with your other Slade points; Slade In Flame works as a film and not just as a way to exploit their popularity.

    1) Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd - 5 stars
    2) Houses Of The Holy - Led Zeppelin - 5 stars (The Crunge lets DSOTM win the tie breaker. Would win many years for me otherwise)
    3) Quadrophenia - The Who - 5 stars (Sounds like a much more mature band compared to say Tommy)
    4) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John - 5 stars(Amazing first four songs, grey seal should have been a single, no clunkers)
    5) Band On The Run - Paul McCartney & Wings - 4.5 stars (His most Beatle-esque since leaving the band)
    6) Inner Visions - Stevie Wonder - 4.5 stars
    7) Pronounced 'L?h-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd - Lynyrd Skynyrd - 4.5 stars
    8) Aerosmith - Aerosmith - 4.5 stars
    9) Brothers And Sisters - The Allman Brothers Band - 4.5 stars
    10) The Spinners - The Spinners - 4.5 stars(Great Philadelphia soul)
    11) Countdown to Ecstacy - Steely Dan - 4.5 stars
    12) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath - 4 stars
    13) Aladdin Sane - David Bowie - 4 stars
    14) Living in the Material World - George Harrison - 3.5 stars
    15) Red Rose Speedway - Paul McCartney & Wings - 3.5 stars (very consistent with nice melodies but I can see why it only had one single)
    16) There Goes Rhymin' Simon - Paul Simon - 3.5 stars
    17) Desperado - The Eagles - 3.5 stars
    18) Queen - Queen - 3.5 stars
    19) Closing Time - Tom Waits - 3.5 stars (not my thing but his voice was much better back then)
    20) Abandoned Luncheonette - Hall & Oates - 3 stars
    21) On the Third Day - ELO - 3 stars
    22) Selling England By The Pound - Genesis - 3 stars
    23) ELO 2 - ELO - 3 stars
    24) Grand Hotel - Procol Harum - 2.5 stars

1973 was the year that the solo Beatles released 5 albums. I was wondering if you were going to include any of them in your top 25 and did include both McCartney LP's. I can see why John and George's LP didn't make it but Ringo's was a bit of a miracle and I thought might be a contender. His LP was the only time a solo Beatle had two #1 hits from the same LP.
