The original idea was for a partially see-through little number, but since Marilyn's nude pics had just hit the news, the studio decided to tone it down. It's no surprise that this dress became iconic though, given that it was designed by the legendary William Travilla. Travilla designed many notable film dresses of the era (including Marilyn's iconic white dress, the one in which she stood over the subway grate).
The fact that she played the dumb blonde role so well that people actually believed that's who she was, just shows how truly great an actress she was. Gone to soon, but immortal in our hearts❤️❤️
After seeing this song for months in RUclips Shorts, I always thought it was "expensive joys" 😭 "Expensive jewels" makes a lot more sense for the rest of the song being about diamonds haha I only ever saw 2:58 to 3:19 so it makes sense that I didn't know because I didn't know the rest of the song was all about diamonds, I thought it was just that one line 😂
Almost 60 years after her untimely death, people are still watching her films eagerly and talking about her. If that doesn't prove she has star quality I don't know what does.
She is long forgotten. She lives only in minds of her piers and those who remember her when they were young. It's more nostalgia for past times when they were young then about her. They just project that time into image of Marilyn Monroe. That's about it. In 20 years no one will mansion her aside from media if they choose to.
Marnie Nixon dubbed that part of the singing though Marilyn is said to have done the rest of the song herself. I'd like to know how many weeks of rehearsals to get all the complex choreography right....then again, the pro male dancers around Marilyn were lifting her through a lot of it and Marilyn s sexy embellishments were part of her instinctive talent.
@Nathan Dunne if you really think that sleeping with people makes you look like a clown you are probably lost. It's a natural thing ffs the heck are u living at bruv the 80s? Wtf
The lyric "we all lose our charm in the end" is sort of darkly ironic, considering the world will forever see her as she is here, oozing charm and vivaciousness
The really extreme saturation of the color in this scene is partly why it's so iconic. Marilyn stands out so much in her pink dress against the vibrant red background and black suits of the men. The female dancers' costumes are intentionally not as bright as her gown, so when she's surrounded by them, she still is the center of attention.
And how the dancer's costumes have little elements of hers, like the bow in the back and the lighter pink, complemented with those big and romantic skirts, like they were a younger version or Marilyn who she teachs to don't trust in men's love, is such a detail. In comparison her gown looks a lot more mature and sexier, by color and shilouethe, giving the idea she's over all this romantic manipulative shit already. I don't think this was that planned but it's an amazing conceptual work, express perfectly what the song means.
Also thought it was interesting that the other female dancers had the black stockings over their heads. It kind of removes the contrast and vibrancy from their features/hair. It really insures Marilyn stands out as the focal point. Everything about this number is genius!
And don't forget the men's hair is brushed salt and pepper on the sides, just to make sure they are at a certain age that can afford diamonds (hint: sugar daddies.)
There are some people who only think of her as a pretty face. But watch this scene; her voice was perfect, and dancing like that takes a lot of work to perfect. Forget diamonds, she was the real gem.
there are actually some parts of the song where someone who sounded like her sang it, because she couldn't reach that note (i think one where the song goes "...loose their shape!") it's because since she was told to sing in that husky, sexy voice to really sell that Marilyn persona. take a listen to one of her movies way back when she was just starting, around late 1940s or so. that's her natural voice. i prefer it, to be quite honest, rather than her being forced to sing in a particular way.
To think she was an allegedly very shy and insecure woman. How the hell did she manage to pull that spectacular performance off. The lights and the stardust. The cameras have magic. They do magic. You can be an insecure person, feel like you are no good, but the lights come on, those camera starting rolling, the transformation starts, the magic begins. It is all so fascinating.
it was called Jack Cole, the genius choreographer on this. nothing more need be said. the takes were very skillfully put together to put forth Marilyn at her best. nobody before, nor since, has been that big a blond movie star. watch her in this, and you know why.
When she was struggling and barely had enough money she spent it on singing and acting lessons. She once didn't eat for three days cause she spent it on lessons. What a legend
Her voice in that section of the song was dubbed by Gloria Wood, who provided voices for some Walt Disney characters starting in the late 1940s, but not the 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
She probably would have she did say that she did like doing musicals even though she wanted to widen her her horizons but we never know sadly. The probably song a little bit more
Shoutout to the legendary american fashion designer William Travilla who made this iconic pink dress and countless Marilyn Monroe's gowns and costumes throughout her career as an actress. RIP to both legends, Marilyn Monroe and William Travilla.
3:35 The shoulder shake gets me every time. Understated, flirtatious, elegant, the timing in sync with the performance. It is difficult making this take look easy.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but GENIUS choreography from Jack Cole. The way she moves, the way she was framed, the fact that the camera LOVES her....classic!
I mean this as no criticism of Monroe, who was not a professional dancer, but the performances he was able to get out of her were miraculous. The choreography, with all of the hip and shoulder sways, fit her like a glove. Crazy to remember that his assistant, who worked with him on this movie, was none other than THE Gwen Verdon. There are even pictures of her rehearsing on set with Marilyn
@@rossmerchant8435 You'll notice that her dancing isn't very complicated or elaborate; it's really just simple arm, leg, and torso movements. I read somewhere that the choreographer had invented a method where he was able to create a dancing routine that appeared more complex than it really was. I think he was right because he managed to make it look like MM was a trained dancer when she wasn't.
Bravo!!!!!! For crediting the choreographer which almost no one does on these videos lol Jack Cole is a jazz dance legend, often called the Father of Jazz dance.
Marilyn Monroe was the perfect not-so-dumb blonde. She was a genius at playing that role. This is one of her her best, if not her best, choreographed number. RIP Norma Jean.
I had an older colleague in the Beverly Hills bookstore where I worked (& knew people who knew MM on different levels) and Connie would say that "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" is her theme song.
Lyssy Kim Ice = Diamonds. Dice = Play. Basically, if you don’t get her diamonds, you can’t play with her, you’re not even in the game. In other words, she only dates rich men who give her lavish gifts.
Said Jane Russell of Marilyn: "Diamonds!? All she wants is books!" Too bad they weren't brought together again for other movies. Their clear chemistry radiates from solid friendship.
jane russell was also very ahead of her time tho marilyn did misunderstood some of her words she always talked and thought greatly of her despite monroe overshadowing her in this movie or what the public viewed her as whether she was alive or dead. im not a fan of jane but i respect her very much :)
It was those two industries that supposedly killed her because in her friends said that no man would take her seriously because she was the original blonde bombshell is was what I heard
@@dabigdikdangler lol i thought you and i are speaking of two different people Marilyn was one of the biggest female actresses and singer up until her death She willingly took time off to be with family If you see that as a fading artist you are sadly mistaken She was and is a gem and as for her death it was is and always will be a tragedy We lost a queen
This song isn't about liking material things, she never talked about having a loving relationship with a guy and dumping him when he couldn't give her stuff. all the examples she gave were affairs and sugar daddies. she's talking about not getting taken advantage of because diamonds are the only solid *security* a man could give. and employer hits on you, well screw your advancements unless i'm getting something out of it. "it's then that those louses go back to their spouses." It's not being taken advantage of in an already imbalanced power dynamic. She's talking about paying gas and rent with that money/gifts/diamonds. It's a really interesting feminist mindset for the 50s and throws the whole golddigger thing into wack because in all these stories, the GUY goes after her FIRST. But idk. I might just be talking out of my ass here. I just really like this movie.
yes! back then, women’s careers were very limited and securing financial independence through a man (aka today’s female gold diggers) was feminist to desire this independence. different now since many more careers are much more open to female workers
Never tire of watching her perform this song. No one could have done it better. Especially liked the-These rocks don't lose their shape and at end where she was belting out DIAMONDS and dancing across the stage. She proved she had talent and what a voice.
She is unbelievably charismatic and talented. The way she moves and makes her expressions, it's literally perfect. You can't help but fall for her. RIP Norma
I agree! Thank you for using her actual name aswell! So many people can’t really separate the character from the person, she was an incredible woman both in and out of the acting world!
When I was growing up, I always wanted to look like Marilyn. I'm still young but I now somewhat understand her pain and what she was going through. Seeing her films again, it feels haunting that she was in so much pain during this time and now she's dead. Even at her grave she is being objectified. One man wanted to be laid face down over her dead body. His wish came true. People are disgusting and this wonderful woman should have had the respect and good treatment she deserved.
What?! HOW sick and disgusting?! :( I am so ashamed, we really didn't deserve her. People are so fucked up in the head that it makes me wanna puke. Anyway, I want to recreate one of her looks one day, and remind people of her because it seems like this generation doesn't know about her...

With her ethereal beauty and mesmerizing presence, Marilyn Monroe embodied the essence of Hollywood glamour. Her legacy is as lasting as the stars themselves. You can't find a single photo where her beauty is "more or less"... she is always beautiful, exuberant, radiant and sexy! A star that will shine in our sky forever.
I feel like Miss Marilyn Monroe would’ve loved the 21st century, she was way ahead of her time. Edit: I didn’t want to be the bitch that edits her comment, but let me clarify one thing: I never said anything about her switching times. This comment didn’t even imply that. I was just saying that she would have loved to see how far we’ve come socially and technologically. She was perfect where she was, but unfortunately, didn’t love long enough to see the 21st century.
Fel LovesKombucha what the fuck are you talking about? weirdo. she was way ahead of her time, was an avid civil rights supporter, helped ella fitzgerald play in a club that didn’t allow black performers, she was very much a supporter of lgbt rights. if anything she’d be an “sjw” and you wouldn’t be too fond of her.

@@yakinyamaddi Most of the song in the film is Monroe's own voice and sources differ on how much help she had. The American Film Institute, TCM, and a biography of director Howard Hawks state the only help she had was for the brief high-pitched introduction to the song, which was sung by Gloria Wood.
The choreography and cinematography and, above all, Marilyn's immortal performance, makes this one of the most dazzling, most breathtaking moments in Motion Picture History
Bless her soul. She truly possessed an otherworldly sense of class and charisma. Marilyn was truly one of a kind and its wonderful to witness her legacy transcending throughout the ages.

Exactly! Like yah I get it Madonna is one of the GREATEST out there. But, actually trying to BE Marilyn in “Material Girl” made my eyes roll. Comparing herself to Marilyn didn’t seem cool, it seemed cheap and over the top to me.
Everything about this scene is just perfect. The song, the choreography, the costumes, the set design, and of course the actress. I can't imagine any other actress pulling this off. It happened at exactly the right time in her career, when she was at the height of her insane beauty. It's really one of the few flawless scenes in film history.
Two things: It's true women could not open bank accounts or have credit cards in the 1950's, so 'getting that ice' was one of the few ways a woman could be sure to provide for herself...even if she had to keep her cash in a cookie jar. If you want a good contemporary film about MM, try the overlooked and underrated "BLONDE" from 2001, starring Poppy Montgomery. Excellent performances showing the sad life beneath the glitter.
@@ramixnudles7958 according to Google women weren't allowed to open bank accounts countrywide until the 60s I imagine it differed in different states but in the 50s there were certainly women legally unable to get bank accounts
@@idontneedaname318 "According to Google" is a very poor source. It's a lot easier to say something, then to prove it. According to bank records, there were women who had bank accounts. Maybe you're confusing things. If you want to apply for a loan, but don't have any collateral, proof of income, etc., you may not be able to get the loan. You would need to look at specific, individual case, where women were *denied* getting an account at a bank, to decide exactly what happened, and why. If ONE woman got a bank account, that ruins the narrative "women weren't allowed to..." More research needs to be done, and actual records consulted.

It’s so heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine what she would have gone on to do if she lived a full life. But even then it’s so impress what she did do in her short time.
Looking at this with wiser eyes than when it was made, I see the marvelous symbolism in the number and find Ms. Monroe offers a surprisingly modern piece of advice in a sparkling and lovely dance number. Assets of one’s own needed. There is no question that Monroe had huge talent and could have enacted many roles for many decades.
It speaks volumes that this scene was brilliantly parodied in the recent Harley Quinn/ Bird Of Prey movie. At the very peak of her powers, nobody came even remotely close to matching MM. She was marvellous in "Niagra", "Don't Bother To Knock" and "Some Like It Hot" as well. Even if her life was tragic, her on-screen presence has made her immortal.
This is my first time watching this number. I’ve heard of Ms Monroe’s “reputation”. Here I am, so mesmerised by this performance that I want to cry because there are so many people who still think she was just a sex symbol and untalented. I’m so utterly bewildered. It takes so much to be that captivating on screen especially when I’ve heard that she had to overcome shyness to perform. You can’t really “play dumb” with depth if you are actually dumb. And musicals or comedies are so often overlooked because they aren’t as “serious” as drama. It breaks my heart that she was treated so poorly. All I want to do is watch it again. This is such fun satire and timeless. I could only dream of pulling off this phenomenal number.
Judy Garland was taken for granted too. Hollywood was a talent factory which determined how a actor/actress would be casted, how to present themselves, publicity controlled...Hollywood literally groomed actors/actresses back then. That is why there was so much talent. Unlike today's Hollywood...
Aside from Marilyn's amazing beauty and the awesomeness of the song and scene, what gets me the most is her incredibly graceful and expressive gestures, moves and dancing. I watch this from time to time when I want to experience perfection.
I remember seeing this as a lil girl and I memorized every word she looked so alive so breath taking, Her happy face made me happy and her kid like innocence and at teh same time witty smarts just made me love every role she ever played. She was an amazing human being RIP Queen

Marilyn Monroe is the most iconic woman in the history of Hollywood, and she will continue to be. The word "Perfect blonde" is definitely Monroe's....No one can take her place, she deserved respect but its such a pity that a woman like Marilyn didn't receive that enough. She's a queen💗
Most girls could care less for diamonds unless it's their engagement or wedding ring. Fun fact: most natural diamonds are mined in Africa using child or slave labor
Why does it seem impossible to find videos where people comment on Marilyn’s singing voice? People always talk about her immaculate looks and her acting, but that woman really knew how to sing a JAZZ tune!!! Maybe not live, per se, but in all the recordings I’ve listened to she really ‘understands’ the timing of Jazz! And furthermore she had a lovely warm voice👌🏾
Such an iconic number! Marilyn was so talented. She makes the choreography look so natural, while maintaining perfect form and charisma. It’s hard to believe she struggled with anxiety, among other things, and had an unpromising start (like a lot of famous people).
To me Marilyn Monroe is the most BEAUTIFUL WOMAN that ever existed. I don't care what anyone says. When you discover one of her photography for the first time, you just cannot forget her face. There's something mesmerizing .

This is my favorite scene with Marilyn. Gorgeous costumes and dance routine. Must of taken her and all the crew hours to set up the set and get everything just right. Love the golden age of Hollywood. Thanks for sharing!
I never really analyzed Marilyn's singing and dancing routines before. But I did this time. First of all, it was quite complicated to have so many men involved with carrying Marilyn around. Then she had to do a lot of fast and complicated movements in a way that was sexy and matched the melody. She had an unbelievable knack for making perfect sexy dance moves. Plus, her voice was not bad, and she was able to intonate the words in just the right provocative way. And let's not ignore the fact that this song "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" had a wonderful catchy tune combined with brilliant lyrics. I also found that her dress, makeup and hair were perfect. I dare say that Marilyn was never more beautiful. In my opinion, this had to be one of the all-time greatest numbers in any Hollywood movie musical.
I just watched the full movie today. Certainly the movie's plot is a little thin, but seeing Marilyn Monroe at the top of her game (with strong support from Jane Russell) made it a worthwhile couple of hours.
Actually, when this movie was made (1953), Jane Russel was the star. Marilyn was “lucky” she got to be on screen with Jane. The amount of money Russel was paid to act on this was way higher then what Marilyn got. I find that funny, considering how Jane Russel, nowadays, is not really remembered by the newest generations but Marilyn is.
And movie plots were also very simple at that time. No big deal. It was just a soft entertainment. “The Seven Year Itch”, from 1955, probably Marilyn’s most famous movie - because of the white dress scene - has also a very “dull” plot, compared to modern movies. That’s just how they did it back then.

did anybody realized when Marilyn Monroe says no a couple of times her voice sounds like snowwhite from the movie Snowhite and the seven dwarfs?
I thought I was the only one who recognized that
Her voice in that section of the song was dubbed by Gloria Wood, who provided voices for some Walt Disney characters starting in the late 1940s, but not the 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Honestly think it's almost impossible to frame her badly...even the front facing phone camera angle will make her look great
And notice the camera work which allows the choreography to shine without a lot of cuts/movement

Two things: It's true women could not open bank accounts or have credit cards in the 1950's, so 'getting that ice' was one of the few ways a woman could be sure to provide for herself...even if she had to keep her cash in a cookie jar.
If ONE woman got a bank account, that ruins the narrative "women weren't allowed to..."

But I prefer a man who lives
And gives expensive jewels
A kiss on the hand
May be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat
Men grow cold
As girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square-cut or pear-shaped
These rocks don't loose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
Tiffany's!
Cartier!
Black, Starr, Frost Gorham!
Talk to me Harry Winston
Tell me all about it!
There may come a time
When a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
There may come a time
When a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you're awful nice
But get that ice or else no dice
He's your guy
When stocks are high
But beware when they start to descend
It's then that those louses
Go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
I've heard of affairs
That are strictly platonic
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
And I think affairs
That you must keep liaisonic
Are better bets
If little pets get big baguettes
Time rolls on
And youth is gone
And you can't straighten up when you bend
But stiff back
Or stiff knees
You stand straight at Tiffany's
Diamonds! Diamonds!
I don't mean rhinestones!
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
