What a tragic story! Three people being caught up in having their lives manipulated by others. And Worsley, that man was just terrible. All of the power he had went straight to his head. His downfall must have surprised him since he was so powerful. Another great video, Jon!
It’s always fascinating to see how people’s lives were shaped by power and ambition during that time. Wolsey’s downfall is a classic example of how quickly fortunes could change. Thanks Trish
Wolsey.......and he was only doing what he must since he knew that Percy was formally betrothed elsewhere and there was no way out of it. Percy and Anne were never betrothed.....its all a rumour that was later debunked.
The Percy and Northumberland families have such a rich history. It must be fascinating to know you’re connected to such a prominent lineage. Thank you for sharing that!
Mary Talbot’s story is indeed a sad one, caught in a time when true love often took a back seat to politics and power. While Henry VIII certainly followed his heart (or rather, his desires), the consequences for those around him were often devastating. It’s a stark reminder of the harsh realities of court life in those days. Thanks Liam
It’s heartbreaking to think about Henry Percy’s short life, especially considering how closely his story intertwined with Anne Boleyn’s. At just 35 years old, his early death adds another layer of tragedy to an already sad tale.
Oh Thomas Wyatt "I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO'S GUILTY!" Edit: Oh Right Henry Percy. He was the most wealthiest landowner !! But her parents forced her out of True Happiness and into Unseating the True Queen Catherine. Did Henry VIII ever think God was trying to tell him something?!? That he was "Such a king that even his Daughters were to be Kings" Why not play to his arrogance?! .smh...Or betroth Mary to Reginald Pole, make Pole his Heir and go on about having his grand Ole time instead of breaking the world because he was terrified of accusations of "Being Light in the Loafers" which is what they still call men in the South who only has daughters or 'cant' sire a son lol. Yes, it's Silly. P.S. Another Awesome-o Video from my Most Favorite (single?) Professor J!
Your comment touches on so many fascinating aspects of Tudor history! Thomas Wyatt’s loyalty, Henry Percy’s lost love, and Henry VIII’s relentless pursuit of a male heir all show just how complicated and turbulent that era was. It’s intriguing to imagine how different things might have been if Henry had made different choices, especially regarding his daughters and potential heirs.
@HistoryRoadshow Maybe he felt if he didn't have sons, the people wouldn't see him as the "Legitimate One True King" If he were a few lines down (Like Bosworth was 100 years before HenryVIII took the throne) I'm surprised it didn't occur to him to,again, Unite Warring Sides this time Tudor and Plantegenet with Mary (Tudor) and Reginold Pole (Plantegenet) I just love history. BTThis Particular video's foat was perfect ! 🥰
Reginald Pole was a man of the cloth, eventually becoming a Cardinal, he couldn’t be betrothed to Mary. He was a threat to Henry’s rule being a Plantagenet. Henry unsuccessfully tried to find him to have him executed, but was able to execute Reginald’s family. Imagine having the woman who helped raise you and your brother along with your own children killed 🤦♀️
@nikki9125 You are exactly right. When he was a toung King with the Spanish Princess in his arm, he was quite close to his Plantegenet cousins...All of that came years after during Henry's 4/5th marriage. King Henry before his giant blow to the head during the joust was yes an Asshole but a Benevolent one, still. Before he became a complete Tyrant. He paid for Reginold Pole's Church Education Although Reggie didn't become an Official Man of the Cloth l well into his adulthood and I don't know that it was necessarily his choice of Vocation. I meant Betrothal in childhood (as was the custom) marriage by 14 (as was the custom. Or Lil Poir Anne Mowbray Married by Age 2, Richard of York widowed by age)
@@mediocremaiden8883 Pole was already doing his religious studies by the time Mary was born, as he was 16 years older than her. Even had he not, the match would have severed no political advantage to Henry.
Very few aristocrats married for love during those times. Both Percy and Mary Talbot would have understood that. Aristocratic marriages were all organised to enhance social standing or improve wealth and land ownership. It is wrong to judge by today’s expectations.
That’s absolutely true. Aristocratic marriages during those times were much more about alliances, wealth, and power than love. Both Henry Percy and Mary Talbot would have understood their roles in the social structure of the time. It’s important to view their situation through the lens of history rather than today’s standards.
It’s true-Anne Boleyn and Henry Percy’s story is one of history’s great ‘what ifs.’ If they had been allowed to be together, the course of history might have taken a very different path, and so many lives might have been spared the turmoil that followed.
It's not true/ Percy may have chased Anne but poet Wyatt said that Anne had many admirers and she kept them al at arms length, including him. Percy was already formally betrothed elsewhere and there was no way out of it. If he and Anne had been secretly betrothed it would be null and void because his first betrothal was formal and considered as good as a marriage. When Henry Vlll was attempting to get an annulment before Anne was executed he tried to use that old rumour and he sent a delegation to Percy who denied that he and Anne were ever betrothed, The king didn't give up so easily and sent another delegation to Percy who went before an ecclesiastical court and swore 3 times on the Holy Sacrament and denied he and Anne were ever betrothed. The king knew when he was beaten so he had Cranmer find other means which he did, and Anne agreed to the annulment.......it seems she had been tricked into thinking her life might be saved and she sent to a nunnery if she agreed to the annulment.......she soon realized she had been deceived.
It’s hard not to feel sorry for Henry Percy, caught up in all the political games of the time. Wolsey certainly played a big part in ending any chance of happiness between him and Anne. And yes, marrying Henry VIII brought more than enough trouble her way! Thanks Theresa
If you do a little research you will find that mary Talbot was a spoilt brat she didn't want to Marry percy from the world go she wanted to stay home with mummy and daddy when they did Marry she never spent a night with him never lived with him but returned to mummy and daddy
Mary Talbot’s reluctance to leave her family and embrace her marriage to Percy definitely adds another layer to their complicated relationship. It’s fascinating how personal choices like these impacted the bigger historical picture.

Hey Jon 👋
Hope you are well 🙏
Thank you for this 🤗
Thanks Shane long time no see, I'm good thanks hope you are too. More Tudors to come!
Just found out this morning I'm related to the Percy and Northumberland families directly through my maternal grandmother's line.
The Percy and Northumberland families have such a rich history. It must be fascinating to know you’re connected to such a prominent lineage. Thank you for sharing that!
Hi, awesome live history video I enjoyed it. Have a great day see you next video 😊
It is one of my favorites. Thanks for a great episode; keep them coming.
Thanks Mary Ann, glad you enjoyed it
Poor Mary Tolbert. The court to sing songs in praise of true love but no lord was able to follow their heart, except for Henry viii.

I just looked it up. Poor Henry Percy only lived about one year after Anne died and was only 35 years old when he passed.

If only they could have bean together without arranged marriage. Then lives wouldn't have been destroyed and things would have been different.

The complexities of Anne’s relationships and the intrigue surrounding her and Percy add so much depth to her story. I appreciate your insights!
I feel so sorry for Henry Percy! It's that stinking Wolsey's fault. Then she married that crum bum Henry the VIII! Of all the bad luck! Hi Jon!❤😅
