    Pro tip for removing plugs...
    Take a socket, Allen key, or what fits snug on the plug, make sure it's straight. Clean it if you need to. Then take a light hammer, I prefer my aluminum hammer, and smack the socket/Allen. Not be a jack-o'-lantern about it, but hit it good. The less it bounces off the socket the better. Then you will find it is almost always considerably easier to remove a fastener of all types.
    I've worked in shops for 18yrs and I've seen people using all kinds of leverage and fail, only to have me walk up and slam that fastener with my tiny 2oz aluminum hammer then use a harbor freight wrench to remove it.
    My theory is the vibrations traveling through the fastener breaks the rust bond between the 2 pieces of metal. I picked this trick up in a shop that remanufactured cat engines and we fought dozens of plugs until an old man got tired of laughing at us and showed us how it's done.

    Its amazing how much you can mix and match complete assemblies (or certain parts to go with), components, parts (internal and external), along with a bunch of other miscellaneous odds and end inorder to get your desired results and/or setup. And then there's after market upgrades and add ons.

    I will add that there several other new process tcases that are nearly identical on gm products. Mine is a 241c but there are 241,hdh241 and several others. Watch out for the one with the magnesium case half as the pump Will cause wear through holes. They do make a wear plate and several other internal upgrades for these cases.

    The 249 transfer case didn't require special fluid because the viscous coupler is a sealed unit which has a silicone based fluid inside of it. The 247 transfer case uses a variable clutch pack instead of the viscous coupler which is why it requires the friction modifier.

    Look at Dr. Frankenstein over here never seen anyone combine parts from different transfer cases to make a good one but that's good information to know if you have to do it. It's also good information to know if I ever have to swap components of a GM transfer case with parts from a Cherokee transfer case don't know that I would ever do that but it's good to know it can be done. Around the 14:22 mark you mis-spoke about the viscous coupler. The 247 uses the clutch pack where the 249 uses the viscous coupler. The 249 uses regular ATF, as the viscous coupler is a sealed unit that isn't serviceable, it contains its own silicone based fluid. The 247 uses special fluid due to the clutches like a limited slip uses a friction modifier, same goes for the 247.

    I just use a couple of bolts off of the front yoke and put a steering wheel puller on the yoke (you have to keep it out of the way so one bolt will go through a threaded hole and one through one if the non-threaded hole and then it'll wedge that in when you crank it with your impact. Hi Doug, I watch and luv your videos. Just got this 93' Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 4.0 I'm stumped on what transmission fluid I should use for the transmision in here (the best used hopefully!) Mopar ATF+4 (Type 9602) or the Mopar ATF Plus (Type 7176) It has 219,000 miles on it and I was told not to have it completly flushed (just what's in the pan, due to the miles on it!) I was also told it's a 42 RE 4spd Automatic with the Select Trac/Limited Slip I believe. I would greatly appreciate your Jeep expertise in this manner, thx so much!

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 года назад

      You will be fine with just about any ATF+4. In my experience breaking the bank on ATF doesn't pay out. Keeping it clean does. That was VERY good advice not to totally flush a transmission that old. Drop the pan and refill it is the safest way. I have heard a TON of stories of old transmissions with unknown pasts being hot flushed and the are dead in 100 miles

    The Dodge Durango had the option of a 242HD, but I'm not sure what the input and output shaft setup is on them as I didn't have the money to pull the one at the pick a part I found, and I have found several 1998-2000 Dodge Durangos equipped with the 242HD. Supposedly the Dakota had a 242 option but not sure if it was the HD model or not and I've never seen a 242 equipped Dakota either LOL.

    hypothetical question. Can the rear housing around output shaft be swapped from one case to another. Such as your two in the video...... move the one with the speedo sensor on it.. to the other case..... ? In my case.... (pardon the pun) could I swap my TJ's 231J housing onto the 242J (and put the speed plastic thingy on the 242 shaft) so I can use TJ's OEM spedo. I'll be hack and tapping so the length of shaft sticking out won't matter... its being trimmed.
    Got to pull them apart anyway to swap the input shaft to get right length. Oh... on that... both are early 2000 T-cases (242 and 231. putting 242 in TJ)... shouldn't the gear teeth and bearing width be the same between the two?

      Well the bummer there is that you are dealing with a steel plug in an aluminum housing. I have heard of people having success drilling the old plug out using a reverse drill bit. The hot is that at some point the old plug breaks loose and pops out. makes a heck of a mess though. They also bake extractors. I personally have been able to use a cold chisel to work it out

    Quick question watched your video informative. But wondering if you know answer to a question since you work on these? I just did a tranny swap on a 2004 jeep liberty. swapped the tranny and transfer case together. Both Jeeps 2004.The donor jeep shifter has less like 4 high 4 low, the jeep i put into has 4 wheel part time , fulltime, and low. In other words I assume its technically 2 different transfer cases even though tranny same model and transfer case fits. The question is is there any problems with the differentials like is there a gear ratio in each transfer case?will my differentials work with any proper transfer case or are they mated by model. Does that make sense? I'm now worried about having a mismatched drivetrain. Hoping its OK, seems to drive OK.

And then I did some google, and ebay they are selling the transfer case unit. I believed the TPu is part of that transfer case. And some selling it for 200USdollar to 500 or so. question are rear output shafts interchangable? i have 2 242 cases 1 from 1988 with a hard slip yoke cover and one from 1998 with a rubber boot cover. the jeep i have has a 249 with a broken vc so ill change to the 242 from 1998 buuuut the rear output shaft on the 249 and the 1988 242 are same length and the output shaft on the 1998 242 is about 3.5 cm longer that is 1.4 inch ish. so my question is can i take just the output shaft nothng else from the 1988 242 and just slap it into the 1998 242 without problem or is this not possible??? i just hoping i dont have to spend 250 euro on cutting and balancing my rear driveshaft. please help

Plus the original transfer case had a star shape shaft going to the shift motor and the new one has a round shaft with two flat sides. Can I make this transfer case work by rewiring a plug to it or what can I do?

    I have a 2004 F150. It has a Borg warner transfer case. I was told that I cannot take just any Borg warner transfer case from a different 2004 F150 and install it in my 2004 F150 unless both trucks are using the same gear ratios in the rear differential and the front differential on both trucks. What I’m being told is each transfer case and each truck needs to be matched to the gear ratios of their perspective vehicles. In other words if I take the transfer case from a truck that has a 351 gearing in its rear differential And install it in a truck that has a 373 gearing in its rear differential it will cause binding and the 4 Wheel Dr. will not function properly. This does not make any sense to me. What say you?

      @@DEInTheGarage Well, I rebuilt the trans a month ago, and replaced both rear shaft U-joints. Thought the shaft U-joint replacements would take care of the clunking but no. Hi, I own a 2014 WK2 and I wasn’t having issues with my transfer case but there was a noise when I just go out of 0mph and have that part swap and found out that my transfer case was cracked (nothing on the dash, no lights, no warning or anything) got it “fixed” but now it’s popping a 4WD Service - Service Throttle Control - and the car doesn’t run now, end up worst. The “mechanic” who fixed the transfer for the second time it’s telling me that he has to program the case. My doubt is that, is it really a thing? That he needs to “reprogram it”? It’s the 2 Speed Transfer case. I really think it’s a mechanic part only, the only wire that the transfer has it’s a small motor to switch the transfer form Low to High.

    I lucked out and got a 242J from a Pick N Pull XJ that’s same year as my rig (1993). But I noticed something odd. The Transfer case light indicator still only has 2 wires, just like the 231. It’s also in a different position than later years. Not sure what to make of that. Dash light indicator isn’t really a big deal, but I’m curious why newer XJ transfer cases had relocation of the switch. I’m guessing the addition of 2 more wires has do do with change from AW4 (which was only automatic for 93) to the 42Rh? My rig has AX 15 manual, so wiring will be different regardless.

      How did your swap work out? Any issues with the 242 behind a manual transmission?

    • @gryffydd42
      @gryffydd42 3 года назад

      @@jamesstoddard8790 I just did the swap yesterday. Ran into issue with linkage to shifter (I’m using Azzys Heims joint shift link instead of OEM), but transfer case change itself had no issues.
      I was able to drive home in 2WD with no issue. Will figure out linkage over next few days, then try the full time mode out. Part time mode is identical in 231, so don’t expect any issues there.

    I’m looking to change my 231 to a 242. My 93 xj sport is stock for height and has slightly oversized tires. Don’t have plans to lift at this time as it’s mostly daily driver for me. Here’s the trick- I have Ax-15 manual transmission. According to Novak, the ax15 always has short 23 spline for input on TC, But AW4 has medium 23 spline for 91 and up. Does this match what you’ve learned? Novak sells the correct input for about 155. Since this is my daily driver, I want to avoid canibalizing the 231 unless no other choice, and ax15 cherokees are scarce from what I’ve heard.

    • @DEInTheGarage

      I have never done that particular swap, but that is my understanding. Same spline count, different length

    • @jamesstoddard8790
      @jamesstoddard8790 3 года назад

      Did you ever get this to work? I’m planning on mating a 242 to the NV3550 in my KJ. Alot of people have said that the 242 won’t work behind a manual trans because of the torque. I figure I’ll just give it a shot and xhange back to the 231 worst case scenario. I’ve verified spline count will work, just need to look into the length of the input shaft.

    • @gryffydd42
      @gryffydd42 3 года назад

      @@jamesstoddard8790 I went through a LOT of forums about 242 mated to Ax-15 manual. Every entry I found of person that actually did the swap found it to be completely functional. A few claimed they occasionally heard a little gear lash during shifts, but others reported no noise at all. I didn’t find anyone who did this and had major issues.
      From what I read, the NV manual transmission is comparable to the AX15, so it shouldn’t be issue for you.
      I’m hoping to do swap tomorrow or soon. Weather (snow and then constant rain has been blocker).

      @@DEInTheGarage ironically, the 242 I got and rebuilt actually had short input shaft (I even double checked with micrometer). So no input shaft swap was needed. The 242 came from 1993 with aw4 transmission. Very odd, but made for a drop in fit. I did do rebuild of 242 (thanks for videos you did of tear down and components). Just installed it yesterday. Ran into issue with setting the Azzys shift linkage, but was able to drive home in 2wd mode fine. Will update after linkage is set on 242 full time mode behind aX-15. Also got an OEM TC skid plate put on at same time- got it from same donor XJ. :)
