  • We have shown you how to rebuild NP 231 transfer cases before but we haven't shown you that you can double them up to get the cheapest low range gear set of any t-case. At the time of this video the doubler kit cost $485 and the install isn't very challenging. This DIY video should make your gears spin.

    Best off-road content on the internet. I feel like this was a video version of an old pirate 4x4 thread. Don’t ever stop.

    Your knowledge of all these old school/alternative/pirate way to make an offroader is impressive! I cant wait to see how this S10 performs. I watch Rudy and Holly and they seem like they are winging it. But axles and suspension might be all that Ram needs. The Dumpster Fire guy is doing a lot of body work, and relying on mostly stock running gear. Great work!

  • @thisisatest2576
    @thisisatest2576 Год назад +13

    Just a suggestion - put the 6-pinion planet in the rear 231J t-case - it can see 2.72x the torque that it normally would from the output of the front doubler when the front doubler section is in low. The front doubler should be fine with the OE planet gears as it should be designed to hold the torque output of the 4.3L-700R4. Not that putting a 6 pinon planet in the front doubler is a bad idea but if you are on a budget and only have access to (1) 6-pinion planet set... If you need extra 6 pinion planet sets, NP241C/243C cases are a good source and cheap at a u-pull if you pull the gears out of it at the yard... If you are into the 231J rear case you can upgrade the chain and drive gears to the wider chain and drive gears found in NP231D (Dodge truck) t-cases.

    • @KC-7mm
      @KC-7mm Год назад +1

      Would it be just as easy to run the dodge 231 t case and the source a 6 gear planetary to put your stock 231 in front of it or is it not compatible im just curious you seem to have knowledge and I’m trying to learn. I might be doing something similar soon on a build

    • @thisisatest2576
      @thisisatest2576 Год назад +1

      @@KC-7mm The 231D has a few advantages over the 231J: It has the wide chain and sprockets (same width as the 241/243 cases, 1-1/4" width vs. 1" on the 231J IIRC), the two 231Ds that I have had apart also used a double roller bearing on the input gear. I've had several 231Js apart and you only get the single roller bearing on the input gear. The 231D also has a 32 spline slip yoke for the rear output, the 231J is 27spline? slip yoke OEM. Maybe not as important as a slip yoke eliminator is the better option than retaining the slip yoke, but if your on a budget... The 231Ds I've had apart also have steel retainer for the spring loaded shift rail that rests on the back half of the case, this prevents the spring from eating into the back case half over time, haven't seen this feature in the 231J. Makes sense, a fullsize 1/2 ton truck that came with a 5.9L V8 probably needs a heavier duty tcase than a 4.0L Cherokee...
      When swapping in a 6-pinion planet gear from say a 241/243C keep in mind that sometime in '94 (I think) the sun, planet and ring gear cut was changed so that the gear tooth profile was less square and more "pointy". So use a 6-pinion planet from a year range that matches your 231. The old vs. new gear cuts will physically assemble if mixed but it will make bunch of metal shavings in your case and probably ruin it.
      There are different length input gear stickouts as well, don't remember all the details now... 231J 23 spline input gears varied based on whether the tcase was behind an AX15, NV3550 and the AW automatic, there may be other variations as well. Not sure if the 231D cases used different length 23 spline input gears, but I ran a 231D input gear in a 231J behind an AX15, then changed it to the longer 23 spline input gear when I moved to an NV3550 (took the input gear from the donor Liberty 231J) in the Comanche I used to have.

    '89 XJ 4.0L, manual shift AW4 with Box4Rox 231/231 doubler...love the 2wd lo, & double lo/1st gear is 94:1 thru 4.56 finals! Good to see this being done again. I did add 6 pinion planetary & wide chain (231C) to *rear case* since the torque is tripled to it. Put 4 pinion in front range box. Been runnin' it for years. Do wish I had the sight glass your kit from Froelich came with. JBFab provided my twinsticks (years b4 Josh's WJ!)

Unfortunately I dont have any friends that off road or that can help me with my Xj and Im the type of guy that alway does shit the wrong way first. It takes many RUclips videos and FB info to feel comfortable enough to do slightly technical things. I need to change my pinion gear and new bearings in my rear axle as well as new shift solenoids in my transmission.

    One quick thing a note is the VSS, this is crucial if you’re running an LS, or a.m., 4L 60 in front of it, do you need to take the mount housing and it will basically bolt on to the back of the 460 four-wheel-drive version, you’ll need no adapters, but the VSS sensor can you get a Dakota Digital SGI 100 BT and it will adapt the jeep versus signal to the Chevy pulse per mile requirement, put it in your cab so that you don’t have to worry about water damage

    Thank On X for turning me on to you Colt. You and Nate are the best at explaining what you are doing and why You want to do it that way. I am not voting for anybody as I think all three teams should be able to go to show how you don’t have to have the money of Big Tire Garage to go on an ultimate adventure

    Every video on this project makes me want to build an S10 even more. I just wish I had the space and tools to do so. For now, the best I can do is give you guys my vote every day.

    The full 231 will be loaded more than the solo range box, best spot for the 6 pinion is in the full 231
