  • Casey Putsch buys what is possibly the cheapest formula racing car with wings in the United States. A 1986 Argo JM17 Formula Continental. In this episode Casey goes through all the spare parts and over the car to see everything that needs to change and be refreshed from the carburetor to the tires! Can you beat Ferrari Challenge cars with an $8,000 race car and get real practice in case you got the opportunity to be a professional racing driver? Watch this series to find out. Casey: Electric things fail. Mechanical is tried is true it works.

Also Casey: Mechanical points work just fine. But just fine isn't good enough. Go electric, it's more consistent.

      Gen X dislikes it too.
      Its disrespectful.
      Its also madness talk.
      Its bitter and twisted.
The plot wanders all over the place.
Casey has no time to do what he says he's going to do.
Its a window into a midlife crisis.

Casey, I have another JM-17 out in Washington area that I have been running in vintage for a few years. I rebuilt mine from the ground up and have way more in in than you will so that race car was very well bought. I run with one of the original Argo test drivers and a good friend of Jo Marquart so we know a lot of the history of the cars. He most likely had a hand in importing that chassis.
I would recommend you dye pen test the uprights as they are known to fail, I have some pictures... They are the same casting for all corners but fronts get a notch machined in them for the steering bracket. That makes them unique to the corner at that point.
The nose is looks heavy likely due to mounting the wing directly to it. Originally they were mounted to the front crash structure and you would have to fish a allen key around in there blindly to get the socket head cap screws out.
The long socket is for torquing the hubs. When you take off the wheel you will see the center lock pin has a nut that preloads the hub unit (front) or axle in the rear. And yes they are fiat hubs.
Most people run 'Ivey prepped' carbs available off Pegasus. Not sure what it entails but mine has been faultless.
Sounds like you like have a fondness for Hoosiers but the Avon's tend to handle heat cycles better without becoming rocks quite as fast. My experience anyway.
I have a bunch of spares so drop me a line if you see anything you need.

If you are going to be running the Hoosier R35 compound on the car keep an eye on the lower upright connection points for the suspension as the loads the newer tires can make are a lot higher than what the car was designed around. We twisted a couple wheels off under breaking over the years in our 86 Reynard. You could always run the R45 compound to take off some load as its a harder tire but then you would go a bit slower. After you get it all setup and running the best legal go fast part for the mid 80s cars is a diffuser really transforms the car and helps out where this era of car is weakest compared to the new ones (high speed corners).
If you have any Argo related questions you could get a hold of Lawrence over at Hayes Cages LLC he races an 86 Argo and is a good fabricator as well.

If you get two smaller bottles, you could mount them right behind the A frame hoop, assuming there's enough space to put them there. That way you'd have more space under the legs, and they'd be closer to the action. As for actuation, you could get mechanical ones that have the melting plastic "witness" mark. There's even ones that have multiple such points and cables under tension. When the plastic melts, they go to a central latch that ejects the pin, which then releases the schmoo.

This car was built long before the HANS device trickled down to junior formulae so you might consider moving the shoulder belt mounts a little closer together, or fabricating an adapter to bolt them closer so they stay on the HANS and are much more comfortable.

I have a formula car too. Three questions everyone asks. What is it? How fast does it go? Why don’t u have a turbo on it? Formula Ford and Formula Continental are a spec class. Very strict rules. If the rules don’t state it, you can’t change it or modify it. Good luck with it. Keep it reliable and you’ll always finish and most of all, have fun.

I got about a 1/3 through this a realized this guy knew just enough to be dangerous. The very first thing you do, I mean, the very, very first thing you do, when you get an old race car like this is you COMPLETELLY DISASSEMBLE it, down to every single nut and bolt and inspect everything!!!! The last thing you care about is some old foam in an old air filter. Did he even see if the fuel cell was current! I'd never take anyone's word on the engine's condition...get it rebuilt first thing. You don't want the engine to let go a big way in practice or a race a leave you with a big rebuild bill when you can do some preventive work now and save replacing a head or block later. Rebuild now and have confidence for many races to come.

On 150hp you should remove the wings and use 145 tires.

It's a Formula ford 2.0 car ,it has 130 brake max. if it's legal - period ! That's the beauty of the formula .It's totally controlled as regard cam .Block height ,valves (StandardFord),bore-stroke ,even pistons in every aspect. Head porting and inlet manifold -no "tuning" ,totally controlled port dimensions so not much to do there either . No alloy calipers or aluminium(pronounced as it's written ) Bog standard Weber DGAS carb . Only concession is dry sump lubrication and Race exhaust -with genuine FOMOCO Motorsport Silencer . 4speed gearbox with NO lsd. ,and finally controlled tyres and strict limits for min. ride height and wing sizes .
That's the beauty of Formula Ford ,a pretty even playing field that spawned professional race driver such as Ayrton Senna (Van Diemen rf82) and hordes of others .
This fellow has picked up an absolute BARGAIN as Argos are a bit of a rarity amongst the hordes of Reynards ,Van Diemens ,Royales etc etc.
I look forward to hear how it gets on once it's racing with like controlled FF cars .
As regard rubber ,it's still controlled Avons in UK and Europe on 6 and 8in * 13" wheels .

A clean race car might not be faster, but it will be more reliable. It might only be one loose bolt that ruins your race.
