  • How to preserve old newspaper clippings scrapbook idea
    Today I will show you how I preserve old newspaper clippings.
    1. Scan clippings at 600dpi (you can adjust the quality of the picture by choosing custom settings when you scan)
    2. Use the curves or levels tool in your image editing software to improve your images. If you do not have software to do this you can download GIMP for free: www.gimp.org/
    3. Print the clipping on acid free cardstock. Save a digital copy for your records too.
    You can simply slide the pages into page protectors in a regular binder or cut out the articles and scrapbook them in a traditional manner. The important thing is to save your memories.
    Supplies: Binder, cardstock, page protectors
    Tools: Scanner and computer with image editing software and printer.
    The biggest tip is not to get overwhelmed. You can do this!

    In leu of scanning, Why couldn't you take a picture of each page...then edit via computer.... My printer is not the best, but I would put all on a thumb drive and take it to a quality printer...maybe Kinkos or Office depot. Comments welcome

    Wow! My father in law is turning 94 next month. He's a Pearl Harbor survivor and I am making a scrapbook of various Pearl trips we've taken when the survivors got together. This means I can use reprinted articles on paper that will not damage anything else. By the way, I want to be like him when I grow up ( I'm only 67 lol.) His Christmas gift request was another sky dive; his first was at age 88 from 14,000 feet. Go Jack

I hope that your video will give me the kick int the butt that I need to start up again. Thanks so much.

    Question
    What are the technique used for preserving and conservation material

  • @rawdonut
    @rawdonut 19 дней назад

    What I did was create a database to house all of years of clippings. Using an iPhone coupled with the database, everything is organized under its own category, date, subject, person, place, etc. Easily searchable. That way, the original clippings are not damaged. I see that exact zoom-able picture on the iPad or iPhone.
    Then if need be, I can print as many copies as needed. Or email them to friends. I even enter the newspaper name in their image to give it the eye appeal of the real clipping. Let me know if you or anyone is interested in such a database to house hundreds of thousands (if need be) of clippings. I made this database because I saw nothing on the internet that would show me the exact article which I can read from and at the same time be able to create search words for each article. It's great to be able to show friends immediately the clippings or articles that date back to 1910.
    Anywho, if you or someone you know needs an organizer like this, let me know.

    Great idea! I have a huge box full of newspapers and clippings that I need to sort by family and get a little more organized. I do have a question. Have you ever done a family heritage scrapbook? I have boxes and boxes of old photos from current all the way back to the 1800's on both sides of my family. Do you happen to have any suggestions on how to organize my albums? I am thinking of doing an album for my Dad (I have already finished one for my Mom), and one album on each grandparent's family since I have so much. I appreciate any help you can give me.

      I have, but I didn't have much memorabilia, so it was pretty easy. I started with a family tree on the first page and then added photos in chronological order. People can flip to the family tree in the front if they want to know how someone is related.

Scanning everything in high def must have made it so much easier for him to read all the articles, with no fear of damaging the originals which must be quite delicate now that they are so old. I just found your video. I have my grandmother’s high school graduation scrapbook that her mother made for her in the 1920s. The pages have photos glued on them and captions written underneath. Some of her friends wrote notes to her on the pages. The pages are fragile and are deteriorating. The scrapbook is a bit on the large side. What would you recommend? I’m not sure scanning is possible because of the page size. I am not a crafter so I don’t have supplies and tools. I need help please. Thank you!

    At the risk of sounding knitpicky, this isn't really about preserving the clippings themselves, which is what I was expecting: I thought we'd be getting a Lindsay recipe dupe for Archival Mist. But it is helpful I'm sure for those just wanting to preserve the information.Sounds like you come from good healthy stock, Lindsay! :D Really nice and thoughtful project and gift.

    Lindsey, did you notice there was an article with a pic of Ann Frank on one of the pages. It was on the right-hand page, and her pic was in between two men's. I was just curious if it had any thing to do with your family. Or was just something your gramma found interesting. Yours is one of the original "scrap books." Several presidents kept them. It wasn't until the. Last couple of generations that we started making them more personal. I love old things like this. Your local historian would probably love seeing it. TFS, hugs Jess

But I also scanned them just to make sure I had an extra copy in case I wanted to print some out for family. I should do this for old family letters and put them in a 8.5x11 ring binder.

    I really enjoyed looking through the pages as you turned them. Would have also liked to read some of the articles that were about you family if they were in it. Isn't amazing how far you are able to track your family tree. Since my family came over from Russia, everything was left behind. And,my sister lost all the photos because she moved so many times. It saddens me. However, I have my own photos to pass on to my children. Thank you for sharing and Happy New Year to all. B

    I have a question please. I have a very old newspaper clipping it is very worn. Should I secure it with a like self laminationg white back, hes adhesive so I can let it lay flat, then laminate on a black background. I am worried the adhesive will make it degrade further. Then I thought well its sealed twice. Bad idea?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 лет назад

      First I would scan it. If I were to laminate it I would use a heat laminator because I am afraid the adhesive in the self laminating pouches might yellow it more over time. Laminating is permanent though so be sure you want to keep it that way. If you want to glue it to a cardstock first use an acid free PVA glue and make sure it is totallydry before you laminate
