I went to a frame shop. They have plexiglass scraps, 6 x 9. They use plexiglass as their “glass” when they frame pictures. These pieces are the same thickness as the original sizzix die and work the same way. Free. They throw the scraps away.
Oh My Goodness!! I just ordered my first die cutting machine after saving for ages. I had no idea this problem even existed. I am so surprised that manufacturers give you a product that deteriorates so quickly. So happy I randomly found you and so relieved there is a fix. I would have been so disappointed.
I put mine in a casserole dish, poured on boiling water, let them sit for about 30 seconds to heat up, then put them warped side up on a cold marble cutting slab and set a full gallon of water on each. Went off to do other things and by the time I got back they were cool and flat 👍
I am so happy I found this video! I bought my Big Shot in May of this year -- only 3 months ago -- & suddenly I noticed that one plate was completely warped! I didn't even know this was possible! I was just about to order replacements when I came across your video, & I'm so happy I did. I should've known the Frugal Crafter would have a remedy! Now I'm off to straighten out those babies!
I keep a bottle of spray 70% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle next to my homemade (thank you bunches) stamp cleaners and spritz stuff frequently to sanitize and clean. Also you can put your plates between layers of a towel and iron with your regular iron. Love your videos.
WOW! Is right, this is about one of the thousands things I have tried, and only the second that has worked....I thank you.... I....... tried this last year after watching your demo. I believe I said a big thanks then also....i had to watch it again to make sure I get it right.. I didn't I'm saying thanks again that it as still here for me to watch ..... THANKS AGAIN for this fabulous easy to follow instructional video!
So sensible and easy for anyone to do. Thanks so much Lindsay. I finally gave in to the Sizzix big shot and am trying to learn all I can about the care of of the plates. Knew I could count on you. :-)
News Flash. Your tip works great, but I took it one step further. I put two warped plates in a Pyrex cake pan , put an old dish cloth over the dies and poured boiling water from my tea kettle over the dies about half way up the pan. THEN, I went to the garden and got a brick, placed the brick on the wash cloth (so it wouldn't scratch anything) and left the pan on the counter for about an hour. (You could do this at night and leave it all night). Bingo! They were flat as flat. It uses less water and you don't have the worry about breaking the pad by over bending it. Try it--You'll like it.
I've done the same thing! Did it as I was making my hot water bottle in the evening, when I wouldn't be needing the plates, nice and flat the next morning ready to be used right away.
You're a life saver. I looked at mine today and it was very bent, so I came on here on how to make it go back the way they were when I got them. I am going to go fix mine. Thank you for sharing. :)
Hey Lindsay, I really appreciate all the great tips you share with us. Here's one I learned and want to share with you. Cuttlebug cutting plates are much better quality than Sizzix. I use my Cuttlebug plates in my Big Shot with some adjustments to the Sizzix platform and they work just fine. I got my Cuttlebug in 2006 and the plates aren't nearly as warped as the Sizzix plates, that I got in 2010. One of my Sizzix plates actually has a hump in the middle that's about an inch high. I'm going to use your tip to see if I can fix it. Many Thanks Love and Light Vivian
Wow, they look MUCH better than last week lol. My first die cutter was a Spellbinders Wizard. It was second hand and the plates were really warped. The first time I used them they actually exploded where they were so warped and worn, and of course there's 300 pound pressure (according to the promo videos), so they shot out of the end of the machine like a rocket, and landed on the other side of the room. Don't know if your rejuvenation secret would have helped them as I think they were more than ready to go, but now that I have a nice new A4 machine (bought half price in an end of year sale last year), I'll make sure I do this to the plates when they need it :)
This is a great tip. My plates were really bent and the cuts full of paper bits. I scrubbed them with detergent and very hot water and they virtually straightened themselves! Thanks for sharing.
Just cleaned a bunch of plates and they are looking good. I haven't been successful in bending them yet but am rewatching the video. My ebosser is giving me fits about cutting detailed dies and I think its cause the plate tends to warp even though I flip it every pass. Some of the plates I cleaned were over ten years old.
You have such wonderful ideas! I was going to buy new pads today but I guess I was suppose to watch you first....thank you saved abt $7-$8 thank you...
I have a cuttlebug and I have found that when cutting w/dies, I use the C plate along with one B plate because it is thicker and can withstand all the cuts. When using embossing folders, I use two b plates. this keeps the plates from warping.
Thanks for the tip. I have a magnetic platform (best time saving purchase I have made in 2014) and it works best when you have a flat cutting plate. Thanks again!!!!
I use a combination of this technique with another technique - and have never had the issue with over heating that is shown. I take 2 casserole dishes that fit inside each other. I fill the smaller one with water and heat it in the microwave until its boiling. Then I set the plate in the larger dish, pour half of the water in the larger dish, then set the smaller dish (still half full) on top. I let it sit until the water has cooled. The heat levels the plate and even smooths it out a little.
Thank you fo much for this very handy tip. I'm new so my plates are very new but I'll need this in the future. Good to know about the hand sanitizer. Great video
Thank you for a wonderful advice. I will try but wonder if I can do it because mine is like a boat. Is there anyway to clean self healing cutting board?
I have a cutting pad that is bent in both directions. By that I mean that if I hold it over the middle sink portion, it snaps in that direction. If I turn it over, it snaps into the other direction. Do you know what I mean? I'm wondering if it needs to be placed under something heavy in boiling water to keep it in the "middle" so to speak.
Thank you so much for sharing this tip! My plates are really in need of some care and this technique seems safe to try. English is not my first language so I didn't understand well what did you squirt on the plate after cleaning and wiping. Was it alcohol-based hand sanitizer? I wouldn't suggest using alcohol because it cause the acrylic to craze with minute cracks.
Dear Miss Weirrich I tried your tip for fixing warped plates,we use a gemini die cutter and the plates had got badley warped, fist i tried useing water frome the tap no joy, then I used water from the kettle this made them worse, last resort i got the steam iron out set it to max, wrapped a single plate in a wet tea towel and ironed away, and apresto it word, thanhs for the tip will keep my eyes on you.Thank you
Came here to figure out how to get a broken off screw out my screw die cutter plate for making watch screws, think i may be in the wrong place🤣 great video either way!
I needed this too, so I guess most of us haven't been cleaning or straightened our cutting pads. . .lol! I laughed before the video started and thought, "I must be an official Lindsay stalker if I am gonna watch her wash dishes now!" ;-)
I just saw a video from a stampin up demonstrator, can’t remember who, and she said start with new plates, every time you cut press down in the middle of the top plate right before you roll it through, if it gives, flip it over, if it doesn’t leave it and it will never warp in the first place.
Hi Lindsay. I wonder if soaking the plate briefly in boiling water would work? I would put my plate in the sink, pour boiling water over with the drain plugged and let it soak for a few minutes??? Hmmm. I will try it and let you know if it works.
I have a slightly different problem, where I've rolled my Cutting plates slightly off course a few times and the edges started getting ground at and became sharp any suggestions on how to fix this? I had considered sanding the edges but was unsure if it would damage the plates further. Thanks in advance for any help
Love your videos! Just wondering if I could put mine between some greaseproof paper and iron on a low setting instead? 🤔 Or is that a really silly idea?
Wow! Thanks, Ms. Maine. My plates need this attention. By the way, I am coming to Portland, Maine in August. Might you be available for coffee? If so, how do we exchange emails? BTW, I am not a strange person, just a 63 yr. old, who gets so much pleasure from your videos and, as I have mentioned before, your perky spirit always makes me feel good. Now, time to go work on my cutting pads! Thank you for taking the time to make and upload this nifty video! You are the queen of being frugal.
WOW! When I think of how many cutting plates I could have saved...oh, well! No time like the present to begin a new way to make my bent plates last longer. I do flip them over, but they still get best. thanks so much for making this video!
Thanks for great video! One question: how long do they stay like that aften you've bent them back. I have a feeling that after 10-15 times of use, the are back to the same state. Does anyone know?? 🤔
Thanks for sharing this great tip, I will definitely give this a go. Would you mind if you can clarify what you said you used at "4:55", I can not catch clearly what you said. Thank you. :)
hand sanitizer:) It cleans out the nooks and crannys but there was no dirt or paper left after scrubbing with a toothbrush, I did it first on the other plate and there was alls kinds if gunk:)
Hi, Lindsay! Its Masha again. I couldn't fine your video about how to clean and restick the cutting mat with the goo gone. I did just from my memory but it didn't work - its stopped being sticky and doesn't hold the paper anymore. I covered it with the spray glue for that purpose made by Eclips. Any advise would be great! TY very much! U ve been so helpful all the time! much respect to you, Masha
Masha Fromrussia do not use goo-gone or it might take away all the adhesive on the mat. First wash it with a dishcloth and dish soap and air dry, that should make your mat sticky again. If not you need to tape the sides of the mat and spray with quilter's basting spray and that will re stick it.
Great tip! I used one that I saw on Pinterest & it was more work. I cleaned them & then wrapped them in foil & heated them up in the oven under some weight. It did work, but I think I'll try your way next time. I will say that I got the sizzix magnetic platform & my cut plates aren't warping with it. My sink always has paints next to it like your's does. Funny how you can tell if there is a crafter in the house. :) JIL
The Gemini junior has some cutting plates that might be glass? I wonder if this will work? I know the cleaning will help. There is also a metal plate I use all the time and it gets pretty messed up with heavy use. Does anyone have any great ideas on those Gemini different plates? I am going to try the self healing cutting mat for sure, then maybe you don’t need all those other plates?
I've been working on my craft room for the past two weeks....not done yet. Anyways, I have a bunch of colored pencils that I've collected over the years and spent about an hour sorting them and checking to see if they were water color or not. Fun...but took awhile. I found this one pencil and I don't know what it is and was hoping you could tell me. It's by Faber-Castell and is called a LITHO-RUB. What is it and what is it for? Thanks. I'm learning so much from you.
I went to a frame shop. They have plexiglass scraps, 6 x 9. They use plexiglass as their “glass” when they frame pictures. These pieces are the same thickness as the original sizzix die and work the same way. Free. They throw the scraps away.

Wow, it is now 2018 and my plates are 5 months old and warped already. Love your channel so much. TYFS.
I've never read so many comments on anyone's RUclips video before. You really have a winner here. Let me crown you
Queen for a Day!
Fantastic tips! Much better than putting them in the oven, since toxic fumes are released if you heat plastic or plexiglass in the oven!
Thanks Lindsay, great to see you straighten them, was afraid to put pressure on them so your video was very reassuring.
So sensible and easy for anyone to do. Thanks so much Lindsay. I finally gave in to the Sizzix big shot and am trying to learn all I can about the care of of the plates. Knew I could count on you. :-)
After reading all the comments and watching tons of videos I just think it will be easier to go on amazon and order a new set 😊
Some people don't have that kind of money. Mine warped horribly in 3 days.
no. i can't afford that. mine warped in the first 10 days of use. and i did all the right things, turning, flipping, cussing, etc.
Mine warped after 5 passes. Brand new every thing 😮
News Flash. Your tip works great, but I took it one step further. +Susan Elder ... my sister and I were JUST discussing doing it this way. Glad to know someone has already tried it. Thanks.
+Susan Elder Thanks for the great tip.....worked fab for me and mine were really warped!

Lindsay I really like your video. You are succinct in other words you don't rattle on about your cat, kids or whathaveyou. I appreciate that. Thanks
Hello from the UK -Thank you for sharing, my plates could do with some TLC, I will try this one.
Happy crafting
Wish I could like this ten or twenty times! I so needed this tip!
You have such wonderful ideas! I was going to buy new pads today but I guess I was suppose to watch you first....thank you saved abt $7-$8 thank you...
Thank you I really needed that video!
Hope you all are staying warm.
Brilliant Lindsay! I’ll get my plates unwarped today! I wondered if I could get those tiny pieces of paper out.

Thank you so much for the tip came across your video and you've saved me from having to buy another cutting plate. Thanks hx
Thank you I was thinking that I was going to have to buy some new ones. Oh let me count the ways I love the frugal crafter - too many to count!!!!
Wow! So much easier than the foil/oven method. Thank you!

After cleaning a heat gun works well to straighten them! Great tip on the hand sanitizer
Will it work with VERY warped plates?
Thanks for the tip. I have a magnetic platform (best time saving purchase I have made in 2014) and it works best when you have a flat cutting plate. Thanks again!!!!
Thank you Lindsay. I love all your tips and would rather buy something else than pads...so TY...
I appreciate your tips on this! Just today I was noticing how bent one of my pads is getting, and was wondering what to do. Problem solved! Thanks!
Thanks, I love this tutorial. Do you know if a heat gun would be too hot to use instead of water?
I use a combination of this technique with another technique - and have never had the issue with over heating that is shown. I take 2 casserole dishes that fit inside each other. I fill the smaller one with water and heat it in the microwave until its boiling. An excellent tip. I clean my self-healing cutting mats that way too.
you mean there is a way to salvage my self-healing WARPED mat?
Thanks for sharing! Great tip! I'm sure I will go through a lot less cutting plates by doing this simple maintenance.
Fantastic! Must try it! I hope it works as well for me!! Thanks 😊💖
Thank you fo much for this very handy tip. I'm new so my plates are very new but I'll need this in the future. Good to know about the hand sanitizer. Great video
Thanks Lindsay! I have a couple that are bent, gonna straighten them tonight!!
Thank you for a wonderful advice. I will try but wonder if I can do it because mine is like a boat. Is there anyway to clean self healing cutting board?
Thank you so very much for these awesome tips! Love your videos
Thanks great tip, I can’t get that stuff you get from Dollar tree what should I use in the UK any idea
You van just scrub them with dish soap and a soft brush or rag.
Great job. I will have to try these steps on mine. You have such great ideals.
You can also heat it with you heat gun, that works
I have a cutting pad that is bent in both directions. By that I mean that if I hold it over the middle sink portion, it snaps in that direction. If I turn it over, it snaps into the other direction. Do you know what I mean? I'm wondering if it needs to be placed under something heavy in boiling water to keep it in the "middle" so to speak.
Yippee! I’m need to card making and I knew if I “RUclipsd” how to flatten these someone would know! Gonna try it tomorrow. Thanks!
I have old style radiators. I put mine curved side up and I put a kettle 15 pound kettle bell on top of it. By morning it is straight!
Great tip and It look great and you did strighting it out too . you are a great teacher'
Have a great week.....
Thanks!! Great-will do! Love the birds on your new post-you really have talent!! Marsha
Thank you so much for sharing this tip! My plates are really in need of some care and this technique seems safe to try. I wouldn't suggest using alcohol because it cause the acrylic to craze with minute cracks.
What a fantastic idea!! Excuse me while I head up to the kitchen with my cut plates!!
Patricia Chance: when using an iron to flatten the plates, what setting did you use? And, I will also try the heat tool!
Plexiglass matts have memory ... hence heat will reverse distortion. Good tip
Thanks for the great tip I Will try this thank you for sharing with me
Dear Miss Weirrich I tried your tip for fixing warped plates,we use a gemini die cutter and the plates had got badley warped, fist i tried useing water frome the tap no joy, then I used water from the kettle this made them worse, last resort i got the steam iron out set it to max, wrapped a single plate in a wet tea towel and ironed away, and apresto it word, thanhs for the tip will keep my eyes on you.Thank you
Fantastic idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Great info, thanks for posting, yes mine are warped and need scrubbing. Thanks a bunch
Genius, thank you so much.
What an amazing idea! Thanks so much for sharing 💕❤️
Came here to figure out how to get a broken off screw out my screw die cutter plate for making watch screws, think i may be in the wrong place🤣 great video either way!
Brilliant, just brilliant.
Thank you for the tip on straightening out the die cutting plates. Is their a way to straightening the top of the platform. canary ruth
Ruth Owens I have never had my platform bend, what machine are you using?
I needed this too, so I guess most of us haven't been cleaning or straightened our cutting pads. . .lol! I laughed before the video started and thought, "I must be an official Lindsay stalker if I am gonna watch her wash dishes now!" ;-)
OMG Maureen, you are funny!
Great tips! :)
WOW! Thank you Lindsey for sharing that awesome tip! Hugs. Liz
awesome, i just bought new ones, but i still have the old ones, gonna try this!! thanks for sharing :)
Now that is a great tip! Thanks Lindsay!
I just saw a video from a stampin up demonstrator, can’t remember who, and she said start with new plates, every time you cut press down in the middle of the top plate right before you roll it through, if it gives, flip it over, if it doesn’t leave it and it will never warp in the first place.
Thanks so much Lindsay for the tip, that's a fast way to get those pads clean and straight……gonna have to do it with mine!!! TFS…..Lori :-)
Hi Lindsay. I wonder if soaking the plate briefly in boiling water would work? I would put my plate in the sink, pour boiling water over with the drain plugged and let it soak for a few minutes??? Hmmm. I will try it and let you know if it works.
this hand sanitizer is a good thing for todays covid19 timeframe Stay Safe
I have a slightly different problem, where I've rolled my Cutting plates slightly off course a few times and the edges started getting ground at and became sharp any suggestions on how to fix this? I had considered sanding the edges but was unsure if it would damage the plates further. Thanks in advance for any help
I can't wait to try this! Thank you for the great tutorial!
Excellent info. Thank you ❤️🥰🇨🇦❤️
Love your videos!
+cheryl7476 aww, that is very sweet but I am on the other end of the state (2+ hours away)
great tip Lindsay, thanks for sharing
I seen someone bake the plates and it made it amazingly smoth
cool, I bet you could iron them too!
What a great and helpful video. Thanks so much!
What a good idea, Lindsay
fabulous. mine are pretty warped. will try this. tfs, Lindsay.
grace
Cool I'll give it a try:) thanks...yes here in CA it's hard to run your water for that long....
I used them for about 6 months of daily uses before they got really warmed again.
@@thefrugalcrafter Aha - great news! Thanks for getting back to me, Lindsey!
Thank you, for replying and for sharing this great money saver idea. I will definitely have a go at doing this. :)
Thanks so much for this tip. I am going to try this tomorrow.
What do you think would happen if you had metal plates made and used them instead of plastic?
Can the magnetic pad be cleaned and flatten the same way?
I don't know, sorry:(
@Marina the magnetic ones are not supposed to warp I have heard...
This is so fab Libdsay! Thanks so much. No more U shaped cutting plates! Lol!
Oh that's great! Thank you Lindsay!!
Thanks for an amazing share and wish I hadn't thrown away one of my B plates for the CB but live and learn. TFS
Oh! Wow! How helpful---I really thank you for this trick!
Funny how you can tell if there is a crafter in the house. :) JIL
Have you ever tried putting it in the microwave?
delygirl1961 I haven't tried it. I think I feel more in control with my oven. The microwave gets hot so fast. JIL
The Gemini junior has some cutting plates that might be glass? I wonder if this will work? I know the cleaning will help. There is also a metal plate I use all the time and it gets pretty messed up with heavy use. Does anyone have any great ideas on those Gemini different plates? Great tip.....thanks for sharing, I now can clean mine instead of buying new ones!Anita
Thanks for sharing this tip. I got some plates that are warped, got to try this on them. Hope they aren't to far gone...lol :)
the worse they are the better it works!
You're so wonderful! What a great tip!
Thanks. Hi Marji, it is a lithography pencil for printmaking:)
