- Sorry it has taken me so long to compile a list of all of the great uses for glycerin in the craft room. Glycerin is a watersoluble plant based oily liquid that is a main ingredient in many of your art supplies. You can buy Glycerin at a pharmacy or a health food store or in the cake decorating aisle of the craft store (but that is the most expensive way) or if you need a lot of it you can purchase it through a soap making supplier online.
Uses:
Reinking embossing stamp pads. Use as is or with a wee bit of water to reink clear embossing pads or mix with gouche paint and make your own pigment reinker. Here is a video on making your own pigment ink: • how_to_make_pigment_in...
Add a few drops to your acrylic paint rince water to increase open time and workability with acrylic paints. It makes your water wetter!
Refill your blending pens and waterbased markers! Video: • how_to_refill_waterbas...
Add a teaspoon of glycerin to a 4oz spray bottle of water and you have dye based ink refresher, shake before using.
Make a permanent gelli plate, sciency-weincy video: • Make_a_permanent_gelat... Be sure to read the video description for updated recipe!
Add a couple drops of glycern to student grade watercolor paint in a palette to is does not dry out too much.

You can also add it to 91% or 99% alcohol to make it more like a blending solution for alcohol ink painting. I just learned that this week too!😊 Great video! Thanks!! ❤
I write with fountain pens, some are vintage and need a slippery ink to keep the bladders soft. I mix 2 drops glycerin to 2 drops water and mix it into my fountain pen ink, that's for one pen and one fill, not the whole bottle of ink. It softens the ink, keeps it from clogging up very nice old gold nib without harming them.
Add a few drops to water for cut flowers it helps keep flowers looking fresher for longer.
Add drops to globby nail polish to help thin the product.
Make rubber stamp cleaner.
Make dry skin lotion.
After fridge cleaning rub inside of fridge so next time it's easier to clean (same with defrosting freazer)

I love glycerine, too, Lindsay! You have given me plenty more ideas for using it. I love it for mixing with water and spraying on card, crumpling it up and repeat several times, to make faux leather. It breaks down the fibres and makes the card pliable. Fabulous. Love this video - so much fun!

OMGosh this I have to try with the Sizzix surfsomething or other super thick leather like faux leather paper media product they sell. Though I wetted it as instructed & plied and kneaded the heck out of it and cut it dry too no matter what I did I ended up KILLING as in ruined three different brandnew Tim Holtz 3D cut and emboss plates. The ones that make those stand out leaves and embellishments. Anyway before I realized that I picked up two of just about every color especially all the metalics in the 10 foot rolls. There are few RUclips vidoes on using and they usually are sewing with it. I'll no doubt eventually concur that beautiful stuff but in the meantime it sits across 4 of my drawers that usually hold 12x12 pads of cardstock and will....right. Better to keep it in the drawers to remind me I need to work out someway to use it with my dies maybe even if it's just my steel rule dies. If I put it into deep storage as in basement or attic I'll forget it exists as in out of sight out of mind. But hey hey hey. I'm going to cut off a small 6x12 inch piece of the rose gold and apply this hint to it and see if it will break down those super tough fibers it's made with. Certainly worth a try as in I have nothing to lose...oh no I won't ruin another T.Holtz also by Sizzix expensive die on it. In all I through away 40 dollars that day. I thought it was my newer die cutting machines at first but by the time my new electric machine and a new manual had failed and then my big Platinum also ruined the third die...I realized it was the media not the die and not the machines. However I replaced the two smaller gemini and the other one since and went with a Platinum 6 for an inbetween and 2 other smaller name brand manuals too. I was not impressed with the electric gemini. My neighbor loves my gifts and her husbands like YOU have a bad influence on my wife she's now into yet another hobby. So funny...he's a great guy. He's very supportive of her really. And we get along he's just a big tease. Anyway I'm off to cut off that hunk of fabric/paper? And where's that bottle of Glycerin...maybe I'll cut it into strips to see what formula might work best on it.
@@lasinmt106 Lol! Your comment had me smiling all the way through! You poor thing, ruining all that stuff… I love making faux leather with glycerine. You can use scrap paper with printing on it. I paint it with several layers of acrylic paint once it’s dry, starting off with a dark brown overall, and then dry brushing on top with slightly different shades to pick up the peaks. For a bit of bling, try rubbing a bit of gilding wax on to finish it off. This faux leather is very convincing - the only thing is, it doesn’t smell like leather!!

Hi Lindsey:i mix glycerine with lemon juice in a bottle (1/2 glycerine and 1/2 lemon juice)real lemon is better but you have to use a strainer to remove pulps,otherwise it clogs the spray bottle, this mixture is the only thing that gets rid of cracks on the heels of your feet, spray that after every shower while your feet are damp, and shake the bottle before each use😘😘😘

That’s a great tip. I mix lemon juice with honey and glycerine and top it up with hot water for a really soothing cold remedy - just the thing before you go to sleep.
This is a photographers' trick using glycerin. A couple drops into a small bottle of water can be used for any time you are photographing something that has moisture showing in the shot. Ex: a "cold" drink that has condensation on it. Spray lightly while covering up the part of the glass that isn't touching liquid. Then go in with an eyedropper for a couple larger drops for believability. This allows you to control the condensation.
Portrait of someone sweating. Spray lightly with the mixture on their face and go back in with an eyedropper for some larger beads of sweat.
Portrait of someone crying. Draw in with a glycerine/water mixture the path of tears and/or ending it with a droplet.
These are all instances that actual water might dry up while shooting but this will stay wet longer and also keep the surface tension longer to get more shots.

I wondered .. would that work the same way if making a motion film or video to simulate someone crying? I wonder if they do that with actors in movies??
They also use 'tear drops'.:) Like the natural tears found in Drug stores.
Also used (in the old pre-Photoshop days) to smear around the front outside glass edge of a filter to give a hazy, soft-focus effect for portraits, etc.

You can also add a few drops to children's bubbles--the kind you buy so they can blow bubbles with those little wands. It will make the bubbles a little more flexible so they don't break as soon as they blow them.

you add glycerine to your snow globe water to thicken it, so you get the slow snow fall.
I was going to use baby oil.
Don't forget: it's also great for dry skin--add a couple drops of rosewater, and you have an old-fashioned & quite effective hand lotion!

I had such a memory laugh with this hint. One of the very first things my fiance or boy friend at the time did was make me a small bottle of glycerine & rosewater lotion. I totally rejected it. Forgive me I was 21 & not into lotions and thought it was uky. We've been married 50 years this 2022. So he wasn't too upset I rejected his lotion as he didn't take it personally as in rejecting him. LOL Anyway I too have a quart bottle of glycerine on hand for all kinds of stuff these days. Crafting mostly but the lemon juice and or lighter touch fo vinegar and glycerine for dry heels or elbows keeping it light not too much does help.
Glycerine also makes a GREAT stamp cleaner--put some with water and a little bit of a surfactant (soap) in a spray bottle and it will also condition the rubber so it doesn't dry out.

You can use glycerine with baby wash and distilled water to clean your rubber stamps after use. I think the recipe is 1 part glycerine to 2 parts baby wash and two parts distilled water in a spray bottle.

From my point of view (older man) I use glycerine when making my shaving lather. I add 10 drops to my shaving bowl along with my shaving soap or cream. Works really,really well ;-) It is now an essential part of my pre-shave routine.

Use a little glycerin mixed in with 5 parts h2o to 1 craft acrylic paint, makes an air brush paint that flows and sinks to the bottom of moderate to highly textured pieces. Use as a glaze too

Maybe 50 yrs. ago? Before Michael's and silk flowers (yes Virginia, there was a time existing before Malls and glue guns). 3' tall fan ferns grew in my Mom's flower beds during the summer and we were able to preserve them by cutting the stalks when they were still fresh & standing them in a cylinder filled with glycerin/water and green food coloring. After a few days we laid them out to dry. The plants looked exactly as if they were still alive--remained in good shape for about a year. Waiting for them to dry, we spent the time @ the sewing machines... zig-zagging over thin wire placed on the edge of fabric ribbons so they would hold the shape we needed for the holiday decor and presents. Crazy huh. :-). Enjoyed your vid and I too would like a slice of your delightfully energetic and creative personality.

YES... I have place fresh hydrangeas in glycerin and allowed it to soak until they feel like leather...
Two things I use it for. Add a bit to your paste food colors that are dry. I learned that from a cake decorating class. Also, it's great for your cuticles. I use it for embossing ink too, of course.
That was something I did not know about 'glycerin' for watercolors and acrylics. You know, to make your colors flow and for watercolors to be saved. I wish I would've known this sooner, but I know now. You are never too old to learn.
I just watched a video by The Meri-Aetlier" and she used Glycerin to soften up her INKA GOLDs. She said she watches Lindsay and decided to try it and it worked..ONE more thing that Glycerin works in!
Glycerin is a natural humectant in paint it becomes a humectant that is a surfactant. In a homemade cake it keeps cake moist, and makes it just like the cake you get in a box. Great video thanks.

Thanks so much for this video. I've just filled my Kuretake water pen with the glycerin, water and gum arabic mixture and am playing with my watercolour pencils. It's like having a whole new drawing medium. The effect is so much nicer than just using plain water. Can't wait to try it with my Akashiya Sai pens and Letraset Aquamarkers.

Hi there Lindsey.. I finally got some Glycerin over the weekend from Walmart. I just finisher making all my homemade ink cleaners and the glycerine and water in a bottle too. As soon as I can get some plane gelatine I will make me a gelatine plate. I love all the homemade DIY tips you give! It really helps to save money and I am all about that!! This use isn't craft related but....I use the type from the cake deco. section and mix it with my mineral eyeliner powder, I then apply my mix with a eyeliner brush. I find it works so much better then mixing it with water.

I just watched another video where a gal used watercolors and glycerine to make distressing ink! They put the color on a palette and used one drop of glycerine and then blended it onto watercolor paper just like you'd use the distressing inks.
I've also heard you can use it in rose water for makeup setting spray and it's as good if not better than the expensive ones like Mac makes.
I haven't tried either of these because I'm just learning the applications of glycerin but can't wait to try some of these! Thank you for this video! I watched your video on refilling the brush pens - great tip!
Robbie Gleason frequent" makeup DIY on the cheaper" gal here and can attest to glycerin in literally 75% of my homemade face care products have glycerine in them and I've used now for years and wouldn't trade for the world. My favorite setting spray is just rosewater and glycerine (a very small amount).

Great ideas! I love that stuff! I always keep a spray bottle of water and glycerin in my painting supplies and if my watercolors are dull, spritz a little bit on after shaking it up as you suggested. I would not just drop it on because I have found that more than a spritz or two prevents the paint from drying, and leaves glossy blotches on it if it dries.
Thank you! I have a small pallet of Artists Loft tube watercolor paints that dried & cracked so I put it aside and of course bought a Windsor & Newton half pan set. I heard you mention adding glycerin to dried paint so I bought some at Michael's but didn't know how much to use. (The lady who helped me find it -in the baking section- said she had never heard of that & wants to know if it works. I said, "Of course it does. Lindsay said so!"). 😉 I'm anxious to rescue my cracked up supplies! I'll probably just use those for practice or with my nephews. I just took the plunge into better quality watercolors. Yay! I'm waiting on delivery of my QoR 12 tube set AND I threw in 2 tubes of W&N artists tubes. I'm sure I'll start buying a tube or 2 each week with Michael's coupons. Really want to save up for a set of M. Graham or Daniel Smith. I like the idea of a honey binder and haven't heard anything but good comments from my favorite RUclips watercolor artists. I added glycerin to my dried watercolors but too much. The painting is taking forever to dry and is sticky
to the touch. I think watering it down a little before adding might be the trick. Also, some people are adding a mixture of honey and glycerin to their paints. If you cant afford the more expensive paints this might be the trick.
I have now dedicated one of my stampin up blender pens (I think that is what it is called, it is the clear one you refilled with glycerine for picking up other colors and shading.) , I am using it and dipping it in a drop of glycerine then coloring in printed designs... then embossing them. I do have to stop and heat in between colors but it worked great. Mine came out like a watercolor. I need practice practice practice. Now I can make tidy personalized cards even with the person's name on them. Thanks again! (I keep finding new ways to use glycerine.)

Do you mean you put paint in the blender then pick up the glycerine to blend the colour? Or do you leave just water in the blender pen then pick up ink first then the glycerine and put on cardstock? Hope you/someone can answer this as I'd love to try it xxx

You use the blender pen to pick up glycerin, then add embossing powder and heat set it.

glycerine works well for for the rubber seal around refrigerator doors and car doors keeps them from cracking,used neat.
Maria do you mean like the splits in the seal that goes around the fridge? My grandson just ripped the seal around my mini fridge that I just bought 😫😞☹

Glycerine is also known as liquid smoke. It's used in smoke machines to produce enormous amounts of smoke for stage and also for leak detecting in cars.

This is GREAT!! I have had a nearly full bottle for years without a single clue what to do with it. I used a tiny amount to make homemade cold porcelain but still have most of the bottle. I can use pretty much all of these suggestions. Thank you so much!!
You don't need to use pliers to take the top off your Stampin up blender pens, or felts. You just pull out the felt tip, carefully, so you don't wreck the tip, and then when you're done you just stick the tips back in
Great vid Lindsay. I checked out Amazon for vegetable based glycerin and they sell several brands at reasonable prices and free shipping. Read the 165 reviews for the Kosher vegetable glycerin. Lots of info and recipes for skin cleansers, spot removing, a diuretic, and more. This stuff is amazing.

Also if you drop some on your table, you can rub your hands in it and they'll go smooth (and a little gooey too but not for long).

Great video Lindsay! 😆 I use the recipe you listed for the dye re-inker (in the spray bottle) on my skin. I use it like lotion...spray it on, rub it in...my skin is nice and soft. 😉

I am soooo new to paper crafting so any help is always welcome, recently I made faux leather and used glycerin in the water to spray my Kraft card, wow it worked a treat and now I have that new craft under my belt.

Not sure if this has been added, when I took my cake making and decorating class many years ago, we used Glycerin in the coloring paste, just a tad with a toothpick to loosen it up. Then dab a bit of your color into your rose frosting mix.

You can get good quality glycerin by the gallon on eBay or other places. And far less than what you will pay for it at a health food store.
In my town the only place I can get glycerin costs $5.00 can for 100 ml (less than 0.5 of a cup) Will get more online.

I've just been watching some videos where people use the formula for ink refresher to spray onto craft paper, massage it, rumple it up, spray some more - yadayada - and voila, faux leather!! Have you tried this? With everyone into the midori/fauxdori traveler's notebooks - it's a cool vegan way to achieve leather for the covers. I'm not vegan - but I can appreciate an alternative to leather and another craft to learn/use - plus, I have vegetarians/vegans in my life who would appreciate it too!! thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich

I loooove using glycerin in my projects! I have a little mini water color palette where I used old cleaned out lip balm containers and cotman watercolors in an Altoids tin. I just squeeze some tube paint into the lip balm container, and add a couple drops of glycerin mix and then mix and set aside to dry. Makes an adorable compact on the go watercolor palette.

An added note ! I am so happy about how the glycerin will restore the
broken dried up pallets . I have some Galaxy water color paints that I love
to use on my gourds and a couple of colors are dried up and actually chipping out UGG cause I seldom use those on the gourd (pearl black , and pearly gold) Thank for saving the day on those !!

Lady, you were so much fun that your presentation actually hurt me physically! My cheeks are still tight from smiling and laughing so much! I have never seen enthusiasm used like an I.E.D. before! Kudos to YOU! I have been using glycerin for awhile now, mixed with a little water, some gel medium and a tiny bit of alcohol it does extend the drying time of Acrylic Paints. Thanks for the validation!
Glycerin is also used in make up FX's. It can make a person look like they have been swimming, sweating, or even drooling. Also if your making like open wounds to give them a little bit of a shine spray some on there and it will look wet.

Try a few drops of Pearlescent medium for watercolours !
I know this comment is late but it may still help or help others just seeing this video now. Just some thoughts - W&N (and probably other brands), have a great irridescent water colour medium to add to your water colour paints - its not very expensive and goes a long way (even make your own wink of stellar pens or similar?). I'm about to try the W&N one to make metallic/irridescent water colours and sprays.
If making water colour paints from scratch, I don't have a recipe but I'm fairly sure you'll need to make a mix of pigments or dyes (for your colours), water (preferably distilled to help stop mould), glycerin (or honey) and gum arabic (the binder), and possibly ox gall (which improves flow). There are other YT videos with more specific recipes; Lindsay may even have one about DIY paints? However, If just adding the medium to existing water colours you already have - easy! Just trial and error as to how much medium you add and how metallic-looking they turn out.
You could also use mica powder (preferably clear or pearl white), which is what I suspect is in the W&N medium (you don't have to get expensive mica name brands; there are cheap 100gm jars of it on eBay, compared to 3 gm jars!)- try it for for acrylics too, and DIY ink sprays/pads (pigment ink pads can be made with gouache as also shown in another of Lindsay's videos)..... and of course, like water colours, you can create irridescent/metallic gouache too.
I've also heard that as a hack, any colour acrylic paint can be turned to a metallic look by simply adding silver acrylic paint - silver acrylics are relatively easy to find though need to be careful as it will probably change/lighten the colours of the other acrylics you want to look metallic, depending on the amount you add. Trial and error. See what happens. I've just got some mica from ebay (100g jars each of clear, pearl white, gold, red, green, lilac, silver and a darker lavender) - and also set of PearEX to see if any difference - eg in grit size. Am going to have fun experimenting!!

I know this is an old video.. so I hope you see this question. I used a single drop of Glycerin in my Lukas paints.. But there is a problem. The paints take forever to dry now when I apply them to paper. I had some that didn't dry for almost a week.. and they were very shiny when they were dry. Suggestions?

Wood Marquetry:
Mix together one fluid ounce of glycerin with one quart of distilled water to form a solution. Next, saturate thin sheets of wood veneer with the solution using a wide paint brush before drying them. Either, quickly - with a heat press, or just by weighing them down overnight on a flat surface. By "priming" wood veneers with glycerin & distilled water prior to cutting them out and applying a permanent adhesive to join them - it will eliminate any possibility of the paper-thin veneer pieces warping and/or splitting while the adhesive dries.
I recently discovered this technique the last time I was browsing for supplies at my local Rockler Fine Woodworking store. It's greatly improved my overall aesthetics, as well as restored my confidence whenever I consider delving into this medium.
Oh yeah, I just recalled yet another application for our beloved dynamic elixir.
To greatly enhance stage-lighting effects:
Just mix together a smaller ratio of aqueous glycol (glycerin) with distilled water (~1:5) to form a solution that is essentially a chemically identical, albeit drastically inexpensive, vat of home-made fog juice. So, that you can fill up your smoke machine the next time the need arises. Cue up the lasers and the strobes. Party on, Wayne: party on, Garth.
