I took a Sharpie and serial numbered my Jose Uribe error. It's now an eBay 1/1. Per eBay rules, I'm selling it as a reprint because I can't verify authenticity, but my grandpa's sister's cousin's friend's dog was a big collector and I got it from his attic. I've personally graded the card an 8.5, but it LOOKS NICER. You should definitely cross it over.

One thing I see frequently specifically with basketball cards are Panini Digital cards. To most people they’re worthless, but listers will sneak digital in the middle of the listing and hope someone takes a flyer
The Brady being a reprint of an SP Authentic with "Authentic" in the title makes it even more misleading for some bidders. Thanks for this info, Chris!

With those error cards, another shady part of it is that the seller can promote the card by offering eBay a crazy high percentage of the sale. List the card for $1,000, promote it up to 90 percent so eBay gets $900 on a sale, get a bazillion eyeballs on the card, and if someone is dumb enough to fall for it, you get $100. Yes. The "eBay 1/1" crap is my biggest pet peeve on eBay, hands down. Another sketchy thing to look out for, though, is "re-packs." You know, those 'mystery' packs where the seller lists a couple of high end cards you just might receive, but hey even if not you'll still get an auto, a relic, and/or a high-end rookie! But instead of getting that Luka Prizm Silver in the pic, you get a Jahlil Okafor base Prizm rookie. Those rip-offs used to be somewhat scarce, now they're all over eBay, asking anywhere from $20-200, with sellers who can't offer assurances or transparency, but always a feedback rating in the low to mid 90% lol
Great video. Thank you. I've noticed some people selling PSA card and then scrolling down and seeing the exact same PSA serial numbered card on a different listing under a different seller name.
Thanks for doing all you do but in particular- this one. I used to collect back in the early ‘60’s with my older brother who passed recently. I knew he kept our combined collection but after this long? I’m clueless about actual values. I try to educate myself by looking at eBay (knowing it’s prone to scammers) but I’m not sure how to navigate the current terrain. I’m getting a great refresh and more important- a real education with your videos. A thousand thank yous.
The biggest scam on ebay is the global shipping program. For international buyers (i am canadian) they automatically charge us duty and tax on our purchases. If customs does not hit the items then pitney bowes keeps the money.
I have this same problem and now I almost exclusively buy from Canadian sellers, or ask US sellers if they're willing to ship with tracking but without Ebay's program (many are not too inclined to do so though)
@@paul-baseballcollector its sold to U.S. sellers as easy and streamlined. Print a barcode and mail evrrything to one place. Often when i tell sellers about this they have no idea we are getting gouged so badly.
A new tactic out there is Silver Prizms, items are usually listed as silver and no photo of the back is given. Lot of sellers also tries to make the card shine.
The "rp", "selling as a reprint", "cannot confirm authenticity of estate sale find" is the biggest problem in the hobby. These sellers need to be shut down.
Hi Chris - i have lots in my list. The most frustrating to me is when sellers include "undergraded" in the title. In other word if you have a PSA 8 card and say under graded, they are saying that if it was resent to PSA it would get a higher grade. I'm sure PSA makes mistakes but at best its misleading since there is far from any guarantee that you would get the higher grade.
Really appreciate this video. I was just looking at these same Brady reprints on ebay yesterday. Some of them don't even include "RP" or reprint in the description, but then note it in the fine print if you scroll down, mixed in with all the other info.
Great list! My biggest pet peeve is sellers lying about rookies claiming their card is an RC. My most recent example is someone listing 2015 Leaf Ryan Lochte autos as rookies and also claiming they are topps. This was during the time Ryan had a chance to make the Olympic team last year. I reported it as I always do with shady listings but it really hurt me because I was trying to sell my legit 2012 Topps Rookie Autos of his. We all have to report these shiesty individuals!
I totally agree, though disappointed that you didn't mention that these types of listings can be reported to eBay, as most are under "Search and browse manipulation" or "misleading title". I have seen eBay remove a number of listings once reported.
With gma graded cards, in the listing description I will actually tell the potential buyer this gma 9 will probably grade a 7 or 8 at other 3rd party grading companies. If a gma 8 looks to an accurate grade, I will describe that the grade appears to be accurate. Most of the time, I down grade my own gma cards up for sale to be honest and avoid conflict as its a very common theme with gma. I have seen GMA 10's with an obvious dinged corner.
Thanks Chris! I’ve also noticed a lot of listings with the terms “ACEO” (Art Cards, Editions, and Originals) and “novelty,” which are essentially euphemisms for “fake.” Something else to look out for🕵️♂️🙅♂️
Great video, love them all! The one that annoys me is "Non Auto". It's obvious that they just want to be included in search results for the term "auto". I'll never buy from a deal who does that.
THIS ^^^ I also just replied to Chris to mention people who put something like "Not Pele" in their isting title on a card for a guy who played with Pele back in the day. It's so gross and sketchy.
This is great for newer collectors re entering the market. Cool to think maybe you are saving someone some cash by making this video, where had you not they maybe buy. Thanks Chris Happy New Year!
I'll admit' when I first got my CSG cards back I listed them as "graded "X" by CSG NOT PSA or SCG" just to get the views as no one was searching for CSG and a lot didnt even know about CSG at the time...
Kudos to you Chris for helping out the novice collector out there who may not be aware of these shady practices. I was familiar with all of them except for the “eBay 1 of 1”, hadn’t come across that one just yet.
great list and great video. thank you. my biggest beef with eBay is shill bidding and collusion. also, the recent trend of sellers cancelling the purchase after the end of the auction and they didn't get what they want. on the flip side there are things that buyers do as well, e.g. returning cards or cancelling purchases of cards that have gone down in value since purchasing.
Great video, agree with all. When I was new to buying on eBay last year, I purchased to Jerry Rice rookie reprints labeled RP but not reprint. Sellers cancelled each when I figured it out, but they both sold for 200+ which is way more than an ungraded reprinit should sell for.
Chris, this is a great video as you said for the new or inexperienced Collector. It's a shame that there are shady and crooked people in the Hobby. Well done as always. Even my gf likes your channel! And that's saying something...
Appreciate the shady tactic overview, great stuff all should be aware of! One item I do notice is the way some sellers take pictures looking long or wide to hide the fact a card is off-center. Early on I fell into this trap and bought a relatively cheap card, but was super pissed at myself for not truly looking at the card or thinking about this before buying. I did contact the seller and he agreed to take the card back based on his initial description of the card. Again, more pissed at myself for getting hopped up on a purchase vs. searching for a better card. This issue may not be as costly as those mentioned in the video, but it's a super deceptive tactic that bugs the crap out of me!
Thanks for the video. A companion video might be “How to properly list cards on eBay.” You often mention this too, in passing, but a full vid would be v helpful. You could also discuss, in the same video or another in this series, how to make lots, how to price, when to do “auction” v “buy it now” etc. Thanks!
I thought of another shady practice…when sellers post pictures of a card that is not straight on, square to the camera, or photographed at an angle to mask a flaw in the card.
People were buying Bitcoin off Ebay when it first went viral, sellers had tokens made up and buyers thought they were buying the crypto currency Bitcoin. They were selling for $500 when the token cost 30 cents to make at a souvieneer manufacturer.
Awesome video, Chris. This is a real public service to collectors. If you were going to do a follow up to this, one thing that a lot of collectors would benefit from is more details about how you have learned to spot counterfeit cards by sight. I know you've covered this before, but I feel like the reprints just keep getting better and better : (
Great video. While it doesn't quite fit into what you're talking about, I've noticed some Ovechkin auctions going really high recently. Upon further inspection, they were bid up and won by zero feedback buyers, and then the seller immediately reposted the cards are a higher BIN price. That really bugs me, but hopefully people are doing their homework and realizing that the recent sales aren't always legitimate sales.
Also some sellers claim refractor when it is not. Older refractors can be tricky as I sell plenty 93 & 94 finest refractors and some collectors ask me if it's a refractor why does it not state refractor on the back. The only way you can tell refractor on the older ones are the finish. Well Topps did not develop stating refractor on the back until 95 or 96 with some sets not incorporating that until 1997
“No Dot Inc.” means on the back of the card in the small print year and card company info for some reason some of the cards do not literally have a dot at the end of the “Inc” abbreviation.
scams going crazy to watch out and shady people all over ebay. i dont even trust psa i now they was shady with trimmed cards in the past and BBCE is trash.even becket is. just do your own research and go from there don't trust these so-called experts.we need more videos like this to help people from not getting scammed great video.
This is some great stuff. I've collected and invested most my life so I was aware of alot of this, but for people just getting into and back into, this is great. Get this info to everyone, help keep our business legit. Thank you very much.
The "No Dot after Inc" is a legitimate variation that spans a number of different years of Donruss cards. It's not just a printing error. It was fairly recently that the variation was noticed so there's less for sale than the "correct" ones, at least partly because most are just sitting in collections or the backs of closets and whatnot. Although they aren't uncommon, I'm not sure of the population vs the "correct" ones. They're way way overpriced on Ebay in any case, imo. I like the 1990 Upper Deck "No Copyright" far more as the "error" is more significant, there's noticeably less of them, and it only affects a small range of the checklist while hitting a couple key players. Aside from that, what else is interesting is how people are valuing printing errors more now than in the past. In stamp and coin collecting printing errors (and die errors) were always quite valued. In card collecting they were seen as flaws, even if there were a number of cards with the exact same printing error (which was almost impossible to even know before the rise of the internet)-the exception being a card like the Frank Thomas NNOF which is essentially a printing error where debris was over his name on the printing plate. Of course that one is an especially noticeable and intriguing, low-pop one of a Topps RC of a HOFer. But now on Ebay sellers are marketing them as if they're all valuable. I don't know if this trend marks an overall shift going forward or what, particularly when it comes to junk wax era cards where collectors are struggling to find the value in much of it. 1990 Pro Set Football is an interesting case study I guess. I was getting back into the hobby a few years ago, and discovered that a blog called "JunkWaxGems" has compiled a huge list of both errors and reproducible printing errors across that set that also have "correct" versions, and coined it the 1990 Pro Set "Master Set". (worth noting: a notable card it leaves out is a Troy Aikman with a large vertical line over "Cowboys" on the back, that I've seen, and have, a few copies of.) Part of it is certainly that people are struggling to make that set collectible considering how many were printed. But it's interesting because there's actually a corner in the hobby and consequently the market for it.
Good points and vid on watch outs from Ebay. I see too many people trying to sell Refractors when the card is not a Refractors or the other enhancing Refractor photo's with some super shine on them or glow when the cards don't really look that way. But yah the one that gets me is placing PSA 10 in the listing when not graded or PSA 10 worthy. It's very tough to get 10's. I wish the card companies would stop making so many reprints of cards also.
A couple more are schill bidding from an account with zero feedback, or one that has an overwhelming majority of its bids with one seller, and "selling" something at a ridiculously high price and then reselling that SAME card hoping people look at recent sales.
I bid on several PC player's card's from particular sellers and always get outbid with someone with 0 feedback then 2 weeks later the seller lists the same card again. After 3 or 4 times this happened I messaged the seller that I was reporting the schill bidding on his auctions, the seller has now quit doing auctions and has all their listings at outrageous prices now. Just yesterday I noticed I got outbid on a card that ends today, the bidderdid have over 500 feedback ran up the bids from $16 - $80. And then obviously asked to be retracted. Now I'm worried when the card sells tonight at the last minute someone will run the bid right up to my max bid making me pay the maximum for the card. I won a similar card recently for around $20. Which is where the bidding is currently now, which is also what I originally expected to pay. So sometimes it's not good to put your max bid in.
I did purchase many 1996 topps chrome reprint Kobe Bryant cards because I did notice the fluctuating prices of the card. Seen it sell for $1, and also seen it sell for 60$. That card in particular is a fun flipper for sure!
Thanks for providing this to the community. Feel sorry for "newbies" or casual collectors. Ebay needs to do a better job informing the public or at least be real strict with listing titles.
Thanks for the extra information too look out for ! I don’t use these tactics as they’re low blows from bad sellers that only one I use in the title is No Reserve when it’s up for bid but that’s good for buyer and me as seller fair play !
Another one I have seen a few times is "PSA ready" in the description of a card. Another of the junk wax "rare errors" is the "no TM" on the 1990 Donruss cards.
Another common thing people add similar to EBay 1/1 is that they well add non-auto to the title just so the word auto can be there. It’s obvious if it’s autographed or not so it’s just to get more views
I hate when vendors are selling card "mystery packs" and they show the chase card and sneak "repack" in the title somewhere. I've almost bid on a couple cards before reading the fine print and seeing that I'd actually be buying a grab bag with a slim chance for that pictured card, not bidding on the card itself.
It is all about honesty or lack there of. Also, annoying when your search returns a bunch of junk listings. Some great things to add to your search terms on ebay are "-possible -crossover -ebay -RP -reprint"
I have been collecting for around 45 years. I however mainly collect non- sports. We have the same problems in non-sports. My favorite is to find a card on eBay cut off center that someone calls a rare error card. I have seen cards worth 10 cents in mint condition where the seller is asking hundreds even thousands of dollars for.
After your explanations it’s easy for an idiot to say, “o well that’s common sense,” but I’m not too proud to tell you this is an extremely informative video!! Thank you for the valuable tips!! I always learn lots from your videos 👍☺️
The sellers I hate the most right now are people selling reprints(fake crap)without even remotely stating it anywhere in the listing. Or even worse, the seller states that it’s authentic
Thanks Chris, always entertaining and informative. The use of "Tiffany" term is also an overused and purposeful "error" with listings, throw a few bad pics and you have yourself a Tiffany !! Madness
Something common in my non-card collecting are sellers who only write "look at photos for condition." The low resolution photos in bad lighting (literally shady tactics) tell me to not waste my time.
HNY Chris, I hope you had a great holiday season. As usual your channel is offering great content for anyone new to the hobby. We all need to take a few minutes before bidding on or buying any cards. This information that you provided us will definitely help us to make better decisions. Cheers, stay safe. 🍻 🍀
I hate it when sellers do like Panini dutch auctions- Ask some ridiculous price, that everyone knows is way too high based on comps, but accepts an offer less than 50% of what they were asking. Makes me think they were trying to rip someone off who didn't research or "know" what it should be worth. Just ask a fair price and take offers from there!
Good video. I don't like these listing clogging up my searches especially the RP. Cut poor, print flaws etc are listed a errors. Or even the black light test on worthless Donruss.
I bought a so called 1/1 wander Franco auto leaf and it was 150$ listing and I offered 100$ and he accepted. I over looked it and after paying I decided to check the next day to see if it had shipped and looked at the original listing and I didn't see a auto on it. I went off the guys good ratings with almost 10k transactions and 99.6% rating. Although it was a 1/1 it had no auto. I sent the guy a msg and said man you mis lead me and you had false advertising I want 50$ back or I'll put a bad review if eBay won't award me a refund. He said he was sorry and sent me a various 2019/2020Topps Chrome ohtani rookie cards. Prob 30 total. So I was ok with it. But yea I'll always look harder from now on. Great video
1 I saw a few says ago is foreign cards that don't really look different. The one I saw was a 94-95 upper deck collector's choice Michael Jordan gold signature French edition. Only difference to the US card is the back has the wording in both English and French. Oh also the value difference- French is about $60 US and the USA card is worth about 3 times that. Also fake graded cards. I've got a WCG graded 10 Fleer 23kt Jordan serial numbered with obvious imperfections damaged edges etc. When I went to look up its value recently found an ebay listing of that card with the seller listing it at $14.95 USD. The listing shows 789 sold and still more available. It clearly labels the cards genuine etc. There's also multiple different types of the same era cards all the same - sub $100 for a graded 10 MJ or Kobe limited and rare cards. Now I think my card is likely a fake too.
I buy Hockey cards on eBay. Last year I wanted a Vancouver Canucks player autograph, a eBay seller was selling 1 pretty cheap. Without thinking, I bought the card. Later that day, I thought to myself... it maybe a fake autograph. But it was paid for, and nothing I could do about it. I have a few other autographs, that might be fake. I just keep them to myself, to keep them off the market.
Watch out for pics of cards taken at odd angles. No matter how scratched the surface is or how off center a card is there is usually a way for the seller to hide imperfections using bad lighting or a simple camera angle. Also beware of the dreaded MINT condition or Pristine in the title or description. Nine times out of ten there is something wrong with the card. After a while of committing shady tactics many sellers realize that the hassle and complications from misleading people just isnt worth it in the long run.
Something which isn’t specifically a sketchy tactic but just an oversight by panini, is using the word “prizm”. As they have a product line Prizm which is very sought after, but they(panini) use the same word on refractors and parallels on their other product line cards, to which sellers put “Prizm” in the listings and get many more views. I don’t believe this is sketchy by eBay listers but more on panini to switch the wording
Great vid, as always. How about grades from unknown grading companies or I’ve seen some shops place their card in a case that looks like it’s graded. “This card is graded a 10+ Super Mint, pristine by FU grading company!!” Burns my bum when I stumble across these. 😤
In pokemon you see a lot of, "SUPER RARE HOLO" when it's a promo card that was in every blister pack for a particular set... there are millions of them, but sure, it's super rare... Something that bothers me price wise is when there is an item for $5 less than the same item from another seller, but the shipping is $15 for a single card...
Chris, I would be interested to see you do a follow up video on sellers who list unauthenticated auto cards. I've bought some on eBay after doing my own research while knowing there is a chance they are not legit.
Great video, some good things to avoid for sure. I buy and sell on ebay and the one things I've noticed is the ACEO custom art cards. The cards are often printed with an image lifted off an actual licensed card from Topps or another big name company. They are often numbered as short prints or even 1/1. I understand they use the disclaimer "custom art card", but how is this not a copyright/trademark infringement? I find this practice extremely shady since they're often listed as rookie card or jersey fusion. I've messaged several of these sellers, without a single response. Just wondering your thoughts and if there are any possible legal ramifications?
Great video, Chris! I love seeing all of the new (and returning) collectors in the hobby, I would hate for someone with minimal knowledge to get burnt and stop collecting.
Your right all these tactics are nothing less than being a Liar. I wonder if there can be some law established that no one could make reprints. I realize there are counterfeiter's but these companies that are licensed and can print Reprints. Recently I have been seeing sellers use another way to use 1 of 1. For example it's graded a PSA 5 and there aren't any others graded in a 5 they describe it in description as a 1 of 1. The Uribe & Alex Madrid cards list from $250K to $1K.
Great content! This should be required viewing for all collectors getting back into the hobby. “Sports Cards Ethics 101” Another tactic I see is sellers using “SP” or “SSP” for common insert cards that are in no way short prints. Sellers are taking advantage of the term to hype the card. The unregulated listing standards on eBay is why I love COMC where paid professionals list the card. As a buyer on COMC, I can be much more confident in my purchase.
How is comc doing on their shipping times now? I heard alot of people complaining on taking months to get their order. I personally haven't ever had a problem with the amount of time it took until I seen the shipping notification. But I have been purposely not picking up my PC player's card's recently from them on account of this happening.
I have to disagree for the first time ,the second card is more centered than alot of psa 10's I've seen ,just saying .This is the best channel on RUclips
To add to the "RP" thing I also noticed the seller's will not fill out the details of checking the "original" box also. Leaving to just the RP as the only identifier in the title

My new favorite "seller-playing-dumb" tactic is when the description starts out with, "Selling my Uncles collection of cards he left to me......."
Most shady tactic is sending to Probstein and shilling your own auctions or setting fake comps
Chris you are god send to this community! The knowledge and in depth detail of everything you cover is very appreciated. Keep up the great work!
These sellers, not buyers...
@@TheGargoylesDen oh haha right!!
I feel like the hobby has gotten so much smarter this past year, and resources like this video help that cause!
Name and Shame. Sellers that engage in these tactics should be called out publicly.
People selling facsimile autographs as authentic is also very frustrating.
I had also heard that when the card's serial num matches the player's uniform num is another 'Ebay 1/1'.
Kudos to you Chris for helping out the novice collector out there who may not be aware of these shady practices. I was familiar with all of them except for the “eBay 1 of 1”, hadn’t come across that one just yet.
I hate that "ebay 1/1" thing... Every single serial number card is unique and technically an ebay 1 of 1... It's so stupid
great list and great video. thank you. my biggest beef with eBay is shill bidding and collusion. also, the recent trend of sellers cancelling the purchase after the end of the auction and they didn't get what they want. on the flip side there are things that buyers do as well, e.g. returning cards or cancelling purchases of cards that have gone down in value since purchasing.
Ha! Love it :)
True true true
Thanks!
Appreciate that, its a great idea for a video.
I thought of another shady practice…when sellers post pictures of a card that is not straight on, square to the camera, or photographed at an angle to mask a flaw in the card.
Sometimes when i list card i gotta move the camera to stop a glare... not always the case
Thanks for warning new collectors. Someone needs to look out for them until they get acclimated.
This is my zone here. Thank you for the video I will watch. I buy most my cards off ebay and sell them too. I dont want to be that guy
I was not expecting to see Probstein using the crossover PSA line...
Definitely a big problem in the hobby at the moment
I'm surprised Probstein used the crossover method given how prominent they are on eBay.
Thanks for providing this to the community. Feel sorry for "newbies" or casual collectors. Ebay needs to do a better job informing the public or at least be real strict with listing titles.
thanks Chris I did not know a few of them not really noticing the junk so thank you again for the update will look a little closer from now on !
Thanks for the extra information too look out for ! I don’t use these tactics as they’re low blows from bad sellers that only one I use in the title is No Reserve when it’s up for bid but that’s good for buyer and me as seller fair play !
Literally bought that SP Tom Brady for $40 not realizing the reprint in the description, super pissed 😤
Great video... How shameful of these people
I see a ton of listings where the seller is selling a GMA graded card and they add “” not BGS, PSA, SGC”
Putting the ‘rising stock’ emoji 📈📈📈 and ‘INVEST’ in the title
I hate when vendors are selling card "mystery packs" and they show the chase card and sneak "repack" in the title somewhere. I've almost bid on a couple cards before reading the fine print and seeing that I'd actually be buying a grab bag with a slim chance for that pictured card, not bidding on the card itself.
It is all about honesty or lack there of. Also, annoying when your search returns a bunch of junk listings. Some great things to add to your search terms on ebay are "-possible -crossover -ebay -RP -reprint"
Hadnt thought of that!
Great one on the miscut "rare errors"
We should have a list of ebay sellers using these shady selling tactics
After your explanations it’s easy for an idiot to say, “o well that’s common sense,” but I’m not too proud to tell you this is an extremely informative video!! Thank you for the valuable tips!! I always learn lots from your videos 👍☺️
Thank you for taking the time to educate your fellow collectors.
Thank you . This is a video that every new card collector should watch. You should write a book for the beginners of card collecting .
unfortunately ive had my head in my hands watching some fake raw cards have 20+ bids and sell for thousands.. thanks for uploading
Some sellers just look for an excuse to add "PSA" to the title because they suspect that is what buyers search for.
Good video. I don't like these listing clogging up my searches especially the RP. Cut poor, print flaws etc are listed a errors. Or even the black light test on worthless Donruss.
Thanks for sharing, those things are very frustrating when researching. I'm glad you got this video out there!
I have asked sellers, if it is a psa 10 possible - why dont they send it in.. Ebay need to stop this crap.
People also often throw around the term "rookie" in a listing title when the card isn't a rookie.
Very true
There will always be scammers unfortunately
Great point about COMC, its one of the reasons the buying experience is so much better on COMC and other sites than ebay
COMCs shipping time has gotten a lot better but is still a problem
Baseball collectors are shady. Thanks for the info. I hope comic book collectors are not this shady!
