Love the stories as always...The HEAD-SCRATCHER--it all boils down to what someone is willing to pay and/or trade. I think back to my past and I land on 1989. I had a factory set of 1988 Topps--(only significant value now would might be the Tom Glavine) but I remember a friend swapping out the Canseco and McGwire cards for a 1962 Babe Ruth "Babe Hits 60 card" (I would suspect it would grade out as a PSA 2 maybe a 3), but as far as I consider I won the long game and it is one of my favorite cards in my collection...bottom line goes back to as always collect what you enjoy. Have a great week!!!!

Those Upper Deck Golds are really tough to differentiate! I'm working through my childhood Bonds / Griffey binders and starting hunt a bunch of them down. Would love to know more about where they come from - was nice to get a little random context for them through this story. Awesome stuff!
Thanks for sharing the stories. Always interesting to hear. Fun fact is that there are no PSA 10 Fernando's in the 1981 Topps set, so that would have been quite a card in his set!
Thank you for continuing to share your stories. RE the Cello pack, i've noticed that these sorts of things seem to no longer exist in 2021. Rack Packs, Cello Packs. Any sort of full pack where you can see any card, top or bottom. Meaning like set release boxes, not special stuff at a walgreens or whatever. I'm glad the card companies wised up to that, and everything is completely sealed now.
Chris, thank you for sharing these stories with us. I find them enjoyable and educational. You have a good sense of humor and a wonderful way with words.
If the cards are in that bad of shape, who cares what they're asking? Just pass on it and move to the next one. You'll see that on Ebay (PSA READY) and they look horrific on centering and corners.
#1 problem with collectors ... they ALWAYS think they should get top dollar and they ALWAYS think you're trying to sucker them ... its why I like the stock market vs card investing ... but Im trying :) good work my man! How about a video on the TOP 5 cards in your collection you would NOT part ways and why ... you'd sell everything BUT these 5
Your last story reminds me of a friend of mine who wanted to sell me his 1966 Topps for $100 a card. I really enjoy your channel and the fact that you release your videos on a regular schedule and that they are well planned and full of content.
Chris, I really enjoy your anecdote videos the best. Please continue to make more. I'm sure you have had plenty of interesting business encounters throughout the years.
I hate when people think everything they have is gem mint. Ive had a few potential buys ruined because of Psa 10 pricing and those ROTTEN "Your childhood items are now worth a fortune!" fluff articles. I feel bad for sellers that genuinely think stuff is worth 100x what it it actually is.
Yeah, but it's also a case of recognizing when something is too good to be true. To think you have the good fortune of having a valuable collection in your closet when every other member of your generation could have the same is just ridiculously naive.
As a collector of unopened packs, I would have done the same. Steve Hart actually authenticates the packs for PSA, they just grade them. Great stories!
I like how you ended the video by saying "stay safe and be good" like telling everyone to not misbehave haha, i know that's not what you meant but reminded me of telling my kids that when i step out of the house but knowing the sports card community we probably need to hear that anywyas as we are all still children at heart enjoying this hobby . . . love the stories again, keep them coming!! : )
I bought like 10 of those same Jeter's a couple years ago. As soon as I saw your video I raced to my room to see if any of them were the Gold variety but Nada:(

As a collector its funny how people come up in conclusion of value of anything. Just because old its worth money not taking consideration of condition at all. Great content and thanks for story telling time. I wish others would watch you vlog if they collect sports cards.
This is so crazy you made a video about this. My aunt does estate sales and she's been asking me to price some of the sports memorabilia she's been coming across. She showed me a text from her next sale she's going to do. In the list of things to sell is a collection of "about 15,000 cards in boxes and binders." It's been a while since I've had that many cards in my possession and I was wondering what it would even look like.... and there you had a picture for me. lol I'm not getting my hopes too high, but I'm looking forward to seeing what's in there. I'm gonna feel like a kid again going through it all.
Awesome story on those Jeter's. I almost bought one on ebay because the picture looked like it has a gold hologram but the price was at a normal silver level. Just so hard to tell with a picture if it is gold or silver so I passed but it looked gold in the pic. Should have bought it. O well.
More interesting stories from your life experience in card collecting. Especially enjoyed the second story as I graduated high school in 1969. Although I bought many cello packs back in the day, unfortunately I opened all of them. Why, why, why didn't I keep just a few unopened?
Chris, I recently encountered a gentleman who tried to sell his considerable collection the same way. Raw cards, some pretty sharp, most in average condition but he wanted PSA 10 money for them. I tried to reason with him but it was no use. So, no sale..
Most people who know a little bit about card over estimate the price of their cards. When I was a teenager I remember looking in the Beckett price guides thinking my cards at their price…. No go find a buyer at those listed prices!
It’s easy to second guess now, but you absolutely made the correct business decision on the 1969 packs. $4000 is a lot of money to risk on "if they are legit" ..great videos , enjoy them very much! Thank you.
Surprisingly many didn't know that gold hologram was rare..still own four non graded. In sleeves, top loaders for 20 some years, along w/ those 93 finest... some of the top loaders have yellowed.... I just shake my head.
Excellent video as always! I just watched your top 15 80s cards video (PSA 8) from a year ago. I think an update would be an interesting way to show how prices have changed in this wild year - just a thought!
I'm old enough to remember those cello packs sold like that in 1969 and also 1968. The 1968's were 10 or 12 cards for a dime if I remember right and I think the 1969's were just 5 cards because they were a nickel a pack. I used to steal nickels from my mom to buy cards after school. The person at the garage sale might have owned a store 50 years ago or maybe his dad did. Very cool video and thanks for making these videos!
Unopened packs are tough to dive into. There's only a handful of professional authenticators in the country to verify vintage packs. BBCE is one of them.
Many people over value whatever they have. Be it cards, comics, antiques, etc.. What's really annoying is when you honestly break the truth to them, they get upset and think you're trying to scam them instead of doing a little more research.

Nice score on the Jeter rookies. Also, 81 Topps Baseball is deceivingly tough to find in high grade. I must have gone through 200 or 300 Valenzuela/Scioscia rookies and not a single one I had would grade a PSA 10. At that point I was happy to get a 9.
This happened to me all the time selling video games. Some guy sees a game listed, not even sold, on Amazon for $4k for a factory sealed copy and wants me to pay $4k for his loose copy with a scratched label. Its bizarre to think these people are out there.
That last story is pretty funny. He's one of those guys who actually believed his cards were going to put his kids through college. Sorry my friend, it doesn't actually work that way with 80s baseball. Also...old unopened cards have always scared me. I totally understand using caution with a $4000 purchase. People are shady. They used to search packs, now they weigh packs & boxes. I actually go back and forth between feeling sympathy and contempt for the dudes at Walmart breaking out the little scales to find the $10 relic card in a blaster box.
