    Both the life raft and rings were International Orange, later OD when we operated in the delta. There are 2 boats on static display, in at the Navy Museum in DC and the other on the Navy Amphibious Base in Coronado. The last operating PCF (a MKII) is at the maritime Museum in San Diego, CA. Runs every weekend.

    Outstanding job! I built this model before under the Monogram label years ago. It was a very basic, no-thrills kit. This was, and still is, the only model available of the Swift boat. I knew of a former co-worker who was an upper gunner on the Swift during the Vietnam War. He told many trilling stories during his service in the Navy. Cheers and salute to the Riverine Brown Water Navy! 🇺🇸👍👏

    • @carmium
      @carmium Год назад

      I knew a Canadian volunteer in the US forces (!) who ended up serving in a Brown Water Navy boat like this. One day, he told me, they came alongside a junk for a routine check just after he'd gone below to make himself a sandwich in the galley. The crew up top suddenly found themselves in a fight when the junk's VietCong crew opened fire, with some attempting to board the Swift boat. A woman with an old army .45 suddenly dropped to the bottom of the ladder and levelled it at him. And he wouldn't have been around to tell the story had a crewmate not followed and shot her dead a second behind.
      Nasty business.

    great job in the model, I just give a suggestion, port side propeller should be left handed ( and starboard prop is corret, as right handed ), this is shown in official plans of these boats, the props turn outside. Excellent job in painting, good weathering.

  • @carmium
    @carmium Год назад

    The painting and weathering sequences were astonishing; I lost count of the steps! The results are excellent.
    That said, I wonder if I wouldn't have ground away the life rings and put 3D ones (Billings, perhaps) in their place, and perhaps done the same with the overly flat and thin rope coils and perhaps the anchor. Not trying to be a pick, but when you're going so much careful work with the paint.

    Here's a gut check, I built this exact model 50 years ago. 50 holy crap on a stick. Mine was motorized and I turned it into a single screw. Lastly it died in a wonderful Viking funeral... you know how children and firecrackers are. I think I made my dad shit his pants with the explosion.

    Great time lapse! This is the first video that I watched on this channel and this is the kind of video I need to start the assembly of my Tamiya 1/350 battleships. I was hesitant to do it because I do not know when to put on paint but your time-lapse gave me a lot of insights. I hope you build (with a time lapse of course) of 1/350 scale battleships!

    In case anyone cares, the stern mounted gun is a Mk 2 Mod 1, which sports a Browning .50 caliber M2 machine gun, over a specialized 81mm mortar. The mortar is a direct fire/indirect fire weapon made specifically for the Navy and Coast Guard. It can be fired at high angles like a typical mortar, at seen and unseen targets, by dropping projectiles down the muzzle. It can also be trigger fired while pointing directly at a line-of-sight target, like any tripod mounted weapon. The rate of fire is slower in direct fire mode, than indirect fire mode for obvious reasons.
    Typical rounds for the mortar were HE, WP (smoke), ILLUM, Leaflet, Chaff, and APERS. The APERS round, Mk 120, held 1,200 flechettes, and was the primary direct fire projectile.
    Typical ammunition used in the .50 Browning was armor piercing incendiary (API), incendiary (INC), and armor piercing incendiary tracer (API-T). It was linked two API, two INC, and one API-T.
    Great build, Scale Hangar 182!

      You're very welcome Scale Hangar 182. I collect inert ammo for all sorts of ordnance, and recently bought a Mk 120 APERS for my collection. I looked for the weapon that fired it, and learned something new, so I had to mention it when I saw that mount on your Swift Boat. :D

      cool hobby, are you building models?

    • @throngcleaver
      @throngcleaver 6 лет назад +1

      No, I used to, but never got good at the painting and weathering, so they never looked good enough for me. One of my other hobbies is machining, and I've built some scale models of various items, including a surveyor's instrument called a wye level. There's always something to keep me busy, and I have way too many interests to concentrate on any one of them for long. lol

    • @ScaleHangar182
      @ScaleHangar182  6 лет назад +1

      sounds very familiar, i have a lot interests too, but i could give up my job if i get enough money from models to make them 50+ hours a week :) i had to give up martial arts to do that youtube and more models, full time job is ass

    • @thomream1888
      @thomream1888 6 лет назад +1

      It's hard to believe this is your first boat model! I always hate to hear modelers say "Oh, I don't model (whatever it is) so I don't waste time on those videos". You prove my point that we can ALL learn SOMETHING, even if it's not our favorite subject. The weathering you did on this boat is outstanding, and you perfected those skills making airplanes, right? I'll bet you could model a garbage can lid and make it look great! Thanks again for the education.

    I LIKE !!! One question; do you do a pre-assembly deep clean of the parts with distilled water and mild detetgent in an ultrasonic bath before assembly ? Might help remove the manufacturing plastic mold release agents for a cleaner paint job. How do you do bullet holes, flak damage, corrosion, bilge and engine discharges, paint peeling and other heavy-use marks when upping the realism of your models ? Thanks Again for a great build.

    • @ScaleHangar182
      @ScaleHangar182  6 лет назад

      Hey mate, I suggest to watch my videos to see as I use variety of techniques. Have a look on my channel there is a Time lapse builds playlist.

    • @ScaleHangar182
      @ScaleHangar182  6 лет назад

      I never cleaned plastic before, unless you ate greasy chips with you fingers. sprues are in bags and in a box I don't see a point in cleaning them in soapy water or whatever people do. I have build around 30 model kits now and never had any dirty, greasy plastic and never had problems spraying it.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 6 лет назад

      You can feel if a model is dirty or not. I don't typically clean my models either, unless I feel they need it. If your going to be using a lot of high shine paints, like a candy, then yes you should clean your model. If you're going to be making a drab, flat colored model like a military one then no you don't need to clean them. These are injection molded parts, they don't use a release agent.

    • @tomcline5631
      @tomcline5631 4 года назад

      @@mikel9567 Yes,yes they do. Release agents are extensively used in injection molding! You ever see what looks like a kinda moldy green line or area around the base of an intricate piece? That's mold release. I worked at a plastic factory a couple times and we used the hell out of it.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 6 лет назад

      There are thousands of airbrush tutorial videos on RUclips. None of them will help you. You just need to practice. One of the things that will help you though is understanding color and shading and how the base layers effect your top layers. Remember, when airbrushing, it is okay to do many light coats. You don't need to cover everything at once.
