I just built this model. It was amazingly difficult. I have been modeling for several years but doing mostly armor. I could not have done this model without this video - the level of patience needed for a plane is immense. Thank you so much for this vid, there were several times I wanted to drop a piece of wood on my creation, but overall I am happy.
I have to say, there is no way on Earth that I would have the patience to do what you modelers do. Your enthusiasm, hard work, and attention to detail is truly amazing. You are artists in every sense of the word. A tip of the old skimmer to all of you.
beautiful work and attention to detail when i was a kid i built models planes and ships from Revell i worked mowing lawns and shoveling snow and raking leaves to get my models and supplies years later i went into the navy and landed on an aircraft carrier the Oriskany cva 34 figures while i was in the Navy my parents moved into a mobile home and couldn't take my models behind in the attic of the old home I was pissed when i found out a lot of man hours wasted but i was blessed too have a good paying job and bought the same Revell models from the 60's and 70's for a hobby when I retired now I'm retired and haven't built yet watching this video of yours has inspired me to start building them all over again thanks David McLeod
Agree with you. Most people can do the assembly of a model kit with little to no difficulty - but to finish it like this requires some artistic skills👍👍👏

Wow! I used to make model airplanes in the 60's and 70's, but never approached your level of artistic detail. I went on the fly Phantoms in the Marines, and your model is nicer than the real thing. Love your detail on weathering and of course all the hydraulic leaks! Beautiful!

I enjoyed building my Hasegawa 1/48 scale model kits. I still think they make the absolute best aircraft model kits in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scales. I especially love my four F-14 Tomcat models especially. I built this very same F-4J Showtime model kit along with the Felix and Sundowners phantoms. I loved adding hydraulic lines and other bits inside the landing gear wells.
Beautifully done! Years ago, I built a USN F-4J 1/48 kit, just like that one, "Showtime 100"-- I believe it was a Revell kit. It was fine, but it didn't turn out as nicely as yours!! 👍
Very Nice! One of the first things I was taught about the F-4 was stay away from those little doors in between the main landing gear. I believe they are blow-in doors for the engine bays ventilation. They opened and closed almost instantly while hydraulics are running. So anything, maybe a hand or arm would at the least get crushed. At the worst, amputation! The Air Force marked them with red on the perimeter like the landing gear doors for a little extra warning to stay away. Just a little memory you jarred loose while watching your build! 👍🏼
Excellent detailed tribute to one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. Big and not the greatest design but state of the art for it’s time. With that said.....and this is for all posters of Y/T videos.......a color contrasting background for the descriptions of video steps and thoughts. White is viewable but some fade especially against a light background. Example........ Lighter background shades.......Black or red. Darker background......lighter colors, yellow, red, white etc... Once again great detail and right to the subject......not a excessive amount of “Fluff” to fill in gaps. The “Fluff “ factor is more common on voice narrative videos like the poster wanted to hear themselves speak.
Just a little advice for future Navy builds...no plane would be allowed to leave the deck with bare metal on the seats. Those were touched up daily at sea and on the land. I was an AME in VF-102 and we did daily inspections on all our F-14's and had to touch up any bare metal on the seats and put a thin layer of lube on any component that was not painted. That included the cockpit paint as well.
Amazing job! I have the Jolly Rodgers version still in the box. I look at it every once in a while, but it intimidates the hell out of me, lol. After your video, I'll have more courage to tackle it. Great work again!
Phenomenal detail and craftsmanship! (one small thing: the wingtip navigation lights, green/red, are backward; red should be on the left.) Easy fix on a gorgeous piece of work.

Great work, and thanks for sharing! Just curious, why wait until after the pin wash and pastel work to do the post-shade with the air brush? I'm very confident with an airbrush but one little spider and I'd be in a world of hurt. I just wondered what the benefit of that was.
That wasn't their main plane. Showtime 100 was the VF-96 squadron commander's plane. You can see his name (the commander's) on the canopy sills of the model. Cunningham and Driscoll's main F-4 ride was Showtime 110 which DID survive the Vietnam War. It was later upgraded into an F-4S and tired (probably) in the 1980s. It's on display at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. It still displays markings for the first two kills Cunningham and Driscoll achieved in Vietnam.
@@AvengerII They had 3 kills on May 10, 1972. It was not on display at the Museum during my time in San Diego in the Navy. I was there from 1985-89 serving on the USS Constellation. We got the VF-154 Black Knights right after I went aboard in 85, they had just switched from the F-4 to the F-14.

You should rate your builds by how many beers they took to complete. An easy one would probably be a 1 or two beer job but a complex one would be like 3 or 5

My fuselage is badly warped to the extent of me trying every technique known to man to get it straight and it's still badly off !!! I was just wondering if you had to do anything first to prepaRe this for such an outstanding job such as yours that this project t turned out to be ?? Also did you find you had to do a lot if any re-scribing and filing or anything ??

As a child I witnessed old smokey do a flyover at an airshow. When you are 10 or 11 and you feel the earth beneath your feet shake, it is a pretty scary experience. memorable to though.
@@ScaleHangar182 used to be man. Its really cool seeing you build these models and adding all the distress and grime. I flew on the KC-135 and everytime a fighter would come up, you'd see dents, worn pain, and oil. Awesome machines. I love seeing those aircraft I used to refuel on your channel. Beautiful build. Randall "Duke" Cunningham would be proud. So would Will Driscoll. Just a note, red navigation lights should be on the left side, you have the green & red reversed. Still a breathtaking model and I don't mean to be petty. AMAZING aircraft!!!!! 5 STARS!!!!!
Thanks for spotting this, I didn't realise till now. My brain must have been switched of at around midnight when I was painting these navigation lights. Very very frustrating. I'm going to fix that tonight. Thank you !
I doubt Cunningham cares much considering how he completely disgraced himself with his conduct during his years in Congress. If he has any shame, he'll never show himself again in public. It really is that bad. He got out of prison a few years ago after serving the mandatory sentence of his bribery/fraud case. They US Navy hasn't exactly been talking up his case for many years because of his conduct post-Vietnam War. There are a lot of things we don't find out about our heroes until the s#$t hits the fan. I visited San Diego last in 1995 and actually went to the SD Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. There I saw Showtime 113, the preserved F-4J(S) Cunningham and Driscoll got their first two kills in Vietnam. I just happened to talk with a vet and mentioned Cunningham's name and I got a hostile response -- not aimed at me because the guy was aware I DIDN'T know better but nonetheless on second reflection they knew better about him locally than most people did nationally. The second time I got a sense that the vets really DIDN'T like Cunningham was reading Robin Olds' memoirs. He talked about the Vietnam War and mentioned the USAF pilot ace, Steve Ritchie, and had some words for him, too (good pilot but extremely arrogant), but he wouldn't even mention Cunningham by name because he was disgusted by Cunningham's behavior so much. There have been many decorated vets who had significant problems in their personal lives. A lot of them got DUI's and embarrassed their families, went through multiple marriages. There were quite a few well-known names there -- Gregory "Pappy" Boyington with his alcoholism, even Robin Olds had a DUI or two, and the latter wrote about the failures of his own marriages. The difference between them and Randy Cunningham was that they weren't elected to national office, they didn't steer military contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to contractors who gave them gifts and perks that enabled them to live far past their salary levels and do these things over two decades. You just can't make excuses for Cunningham because he behaved that way and was so crooked for so long. Cunningham forever tarnished his name and UNLESS someone is doing a documentary on Vietnam and needs "data" about it, TOP GUN and the Navy really don't like to talk about Cunningham anymore. Note that all the History Channel and other documentaries using interviews with Cunningham were shot well before he got in trouble for his congressional behavior. Showtime 113 is still where it is as a monument to naval aviation during Vietnam, not Randy Cunningham even though he was its most (in)famous pilot. It was installed in that museum years before scandals caught up with its former pilot but it's no more controversial than either plane involved with dropping A-bombs or the U-2 and any number of planes involved with the less savory sides of aviation/global conflict.

Fantastic work! I've never regretted a dollar I've spent on the Eduard photoetch/Brassin stuff. Except for the Brassin engine I bought for the wrong FW type lol.

Nav lights are "Red" for "Port Side" (Left), and "Green" for "Starboard" (Right). , .. ..

1/48 is my favourite scale model, especially the big size like B-1, B-29, B-47, DC-3, AC-130 etc.

As a child I witnessed old smokey do a flyover at an airshow. When you are 10 or 11 and you feel the earth beneath your feet shake, it is a pretty scary experience. memorable to though.
I took my kids to air show this year. They are 10 and 11. Eurofighter is pretty loud too :)

@@ScaleHangar182 used to be man. Its really cool seeing you build these models and adding all the distress and grime. I flew on the KC-135 and everytime a fighter would come up, you'd see dents, worn pain, and oil. Awesome machines.

Hi, that's great man, fun experience! No I didnt build any bombers yet, for now I have a few fighters to build in 48th scale, F-86, A7, F-14, Su-27, also got SH3H Seaking helicopter, and few 1/35 tanks in between, currently also a few star wars kits too

Well. Not everyone feels the same as you I guess. I personally never dislike videos even if I don't like it, well, except someone is doing something really stupid. But I don't care about dislikes. I don't consider myself a professional scale modeller and I make mistakes

I doubt Cunningham cares much considering how he completely disgraced himself with his conduct during his years in Congress. If he has any shame, he'll never show himself again in public. It really is that bad. He got out of prison a few years ago after serving the mandatory sentence of his bribery/fraud case.
They US Navy hasn't exactly been talking up his case for many years because of his conduct post-Vietnam War.
There are a lot of things we don't find out about our heroes until the s#$t hits the fan. I visited San Diego last in 1995 and actually went to the SD Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. There I saw Showtime 113, the preserved F-4J(S) Cunningham and Driscoll got their first two kills in Vietnam. I just happened to talk with a vet and mentioned Cunningham's name and I got a hostile response -- not aimed at me because the guy was aware I DIDN'T know better but nonetheless on second reflection they knew better about him locally than most people did nationally.
The second time I got a sense that the vets really DIDN'T like Cunningham was reading Robin Olds' memoirs. He talked about the Vietnam War and mentioned the USAF pilot ace, Steve Ritchie, and had some words for him, too (good pilot but extremely arrogant), but he wouldn't even mention Cunningham by name because he was disgusted by Cunningham's behavior so much.
There have been many decorated vets who had significant problems in their personal lives. A lot of them got DUI's and embarrassed their families, went through multiple marriages. There were quite a few well-known names there -- Gregory "Pappy" Boyington with his alcoholism, even Robin Olds had a DUI or two, and the latter wrote about the failures of his own marriages. The difference between them and Randy Cunningham was that they weren't elected to national office, they didn't steer military contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to contractors who gave them gifts and perks that enabled them to live far past their salary levels and do these things over two decades.
You just can't make excuses for Cunningham because he behaved that way and was so crooked for so long.
Cunningham forever tarnished his name and UNLESS someone is doing a documentary on Vietnam and needs "data" about it, TOP GUN and the Navy really don't like to talk about Cunningham anymore. Note that all the History Channel and other documentaries using interviews with Cunningham were shot well before he got in trouble for his congressional behavior.
Showtime 113 is still where it is as a monument to naval aviation during Vietnam, not Randy Cunningham even though he was its most (in)famous pilot. It was installed in that museum years before scandals caught up with its former pilot but it's no more controversial than either plane involved with dropping A-bombs or the U-2 and any number of planes involved with the less savory sides of aviation/global conflict.

I mean,what resin,PE and plastic accessories you need to upgrade your models with,so need to aquire them before you start your builds. Sorry if I didn't explain myself clearly. You build some really beautifully painted aircraft models.
John Burdis yes I did a little research. But I didn't use a lot of extras. There's more to get like nozzles and wheel struts etc.
What glue do you use when assembling painted parts?

What cement is used for the photo-etch? Why not paintthe exhaust feathers before gluing them on? Just inquiries.
