    When filming the "chestburster" scene, the actors were not told what to expect. Those reactions are honest, such when Skerritt is seen mouthing "What the hell", and Veronica's spectacular expression.

    Tom Skerrit (the captain) was by far the most well-known actor at the time of Alien's 1979 release. So his relatively early death served to startle the audience - normally people would have thought he'd be the last one to die

    • @PygmalionFaciebat
      @PygmalionFaciebat Год назад +3

      If i am not wrong, original indeed Tom Skerrit was planned to be the last survivor... but Ridley Scott wanted Ripley as last survivor (in the first script Ripley was a man) ..also there : Ridley Scott changed Ripley to a woman. Another idea which almost made it to the movie was: that the Alien is the last survivor, and talks in the voice of Tom Skerrit in the end... but they throw that idea too..
      This shows the main quality of this film ... They had a lot of ideas... and the ideas competed with eachother.. And the best idea won and made it to the movie.

      @@PygmalionFaciebat you're kind of right. o'bannon and shussett's original script was called STAR BEAST. It featured 6 crew members and didn't have the android storyline. the characters were all male, had different names but were written with the note that anyone of them could be played by a female actor. in the original script the captain was i think the last to be taken. David Giler completely re-wrote the script- changed all the names, added Ash the android and the nefarious company. Ridley Scott says that it was Alan Ladd Jr, president of 20th century fox's idea during the re-write to make ripley a female... hill and giler loved it.

The movie is without question one of the all time greats with great direction, cast, cinematography and an awesome score from Ennio Morricone. The creature design mainly created by Rob Bottin, I can guarantee you is like nothing you've ever seen before. The 21 year old Rob Bottin worked so hard and was so dedicated to get the best creature design he could ended up in hospital with severe fatigue at the end of the shoot.

    Smack! "Oh, I would smack her back..." Fun fact about that scene: that slap was real and not told would happen to Sigourney Weaver ahead of time, so maybe that almost could have happened. The other actress just hauled off and actually slapped her with only basic advice to improvise some from director Scott, and so the slightly teary-eyed, off-balance reaction from Weaver, a newcomer to movies at the time, was also real as she wondered if the cameras were still rolling. From there her professionalism kicked in and she just carried back on with the scene, deciding to go with it. Strong character, but also a legitimately strong person.

    Ripley tried to stop the self-destruct sequence because her way to the shuttle, her only means of escape, was blocked by the Alien. When that failed, she had no choice but to try to get to the shuttle again, and surprisingly the Alien was apparently gone. Well, it had actually boarded the shuttle itself, as we would learn later. It's pretty smart for a freaking monster.

    If you want a really alien experience, next time you find a Praying Mantis bug, just stare at it. Eventually, even if it has to turn its whole head around, it'll look straight back at you, make eye contact. You look into those eyes and know that creature is seeing you just the same. I find the minds of bugs unnerving.

    As an engineer, my solution to the problem of having a killer Alien onboard would be for the crew to all don spacesuits with life support, pressurize them, and then depressurize the entire ship (open it to the vacuum of space). Problem solved, and no one has to die (except for Kane, who was already dead). But engineers don't write movies, so the crew will have to do it the hard, dangerous way.

  • @j.f.fisher5318

    17:48 unfortunately, the filmmakers were obviously not too concerned with little things like conservation of mass... Wait til you see Aliens (the Extended Cut is by far the best, a bit more of a slow burn in the beginning but there are some details in the beginning that make the rest of the movie more emotional) - Ripley is even more the goddess in that one.

    • @philsurtees
      @philsurtees 2 года назад +1

      The makers of Alien weren't concerned with conservation of mass because it was completely and utterly irrelevant; conservation of mass concerns closed systems, but the xenomorph is quite obviously an open system. It certainly grew very large, very quickly, so it would have needed some form of energy, but given that we now know it is an engineered being, there's absolutely no reason it couldn't have found a source of energy on the ship and used it. There is no evidence in any of the movies of the xenomorphs eating the people they kill - quite the opposite in fact - so the question of what they use for food (to convert to energy) is never covered, and is therefore open to discussion and debate. I actually agree that it seems a bit unlikely that it could grow so fast - especially given the fact that it's exoskeleton is hard - but these people are in a towing ship that is flying faster than the speed of light, so the rapid growth of the alien is not the biggest scientific issue in the film...

    • @penoyer79
      @penoyer79 Год назад

      this crew has a specific command structure. you do what the ranking officer tells you to do. there is no conversation. "standard procedure is to do what they tell you to do". in this case both were right. Ripley was following procedure but Ash was acting under his special order (which probably supersedes ripley's authority without her knowing it). Dallas isn't technically on the ship and has no authority to command ripley to open the hatch. Ash disobeys Ripley - acting under his own special order - but is covered because he did want Dallas - the captain - wanted.
      the ripley/ash/dallas dynamic is further explored in the script when Ash implores dallas to send ripley into the vents cause it's her job and the captain isnt supposed to take risks. dallas wont hear of it. wants to make amends for kane. Dallas enables Ash to do what he wants and doesn't interfere. Ripley is onto Ash - making his life much harder. Dallas is the buffer for Ash. Ash wants Ripley out of the way.

    The kitty, Jonesy, is the ship's cat. This is not an uncommon practice, even today, on ships on the Earth's oceans. In fact, even military ships have been known to have their own cats. They're mascots who are good for morale, and more practically on a physical level, they help keep rodents under control so that they don't eat and contaminate all of the food supplies. Jonesy isn't going anywhere near that "Xenomorph" alien, though, so it got all the rations it needed to grow very, *very* rapidly.

    In 1979 there was no CGI, but they were able to do tricks inside the camera like when you see the little people walking in front of the alien ship, they were filmed separately and then projected onto plate glass of a matte painting. Swiss artist H.R. Giger designed the Alien, the ship, and the world it comes from. Painted, works of art. taken right out of Giger's book 'Necronomicon'. The Nostromo is a huge detailed model, the creatures are foam/latex 'puppets', the sets are full sized, and Sigourney Weaver actually learned to use a real flame thrower. To make the 'face hugger' autopsy scene look more realistic, bits of raw chicken, clams, and oysters were used as 'guts'. Needless to say, it smelled bad.. Back then, it took a huge talented crew to pull this off. Just like JAWS, the limits of the day meant that the less you see the monster, the scarier it is. Ridley Scott, a master of suspense, did the first ALIEN. James Cameron (ALIENS, TERMINATOR, TITANIC, THE ABYSS, AVATAR) is a tech lover with a 'go big or go home attitude. The 3rd and 4th Alien movies were not fan or critic favorites but still very well done and entertaining, with Sigourney Weaver continuing her role as Ripley. Also, the AVP (Alien vs Predator) movies are a lot of fun.
    In my opinion, THE ABYSS, is the most beautiful sci-fi film ever made. Watch the directors cut because it's a much better movie and the behind the scenes, to see the lengths that Cameron will go to, to make a movie. it will blow your mind.

    I always find it interesting that while it is in the book, the scene towards the end where Dallas says "kill me" to Ripley was not in the movie when it appeared in theaters. It is often said that the scene was deleted because of "length" reasons like several other scenes that also show up in the Director's Cut, but some have said that the execs felt the so-called "cocoon scene" was too disturbing for movie goers so they asked it to be removed (although it shows up in the second movie Aliens). Alien bursting out of some guys chest? That's okay. People encased in resin from the alien with eggs inside them asking to be put out of their misery? Nope, not okay to show that. Huh?

    Based on true events of Travis Walton.
    Saw in the theatre when Ground Hog Day was sold out, and still talking about it!
    Most slept on film ever
    Will not win any polls but so worth reacting to.

    It's a "pet theory" of mine that the Alien did not intend to harm Ripley in the shuttle. First of all, it was strangely placid, almost sleepy, which could have meant it was calm and not feeling aggressive. Why? Because Ripley was its only chance for survival. Killing her would leave it stranded, not knowing what to do next. Of course, when Ripley started attacking it, it fought back, but before that, it seemed almost benign, and maybe, under the circumstances, it really was.

    Blue: "It could be the source of an aggressive alien life???"
    Yeah...you could say that.
    Blue: "Mother knows how to go out with a bang!"
    LOL! Too funny!
    Watching this film in the theater when it was first released alternated between being creepy and then suddenly terrifying. It was advertised as a science-fiction movie, but the truth is that it's actually a sci-fi horror film.

    So very much enjoyed your reaction!,...young person, I know yess we were impressed at the time it came out, cause Ridley Scott took scifi further, than Star Wars, further than Stanley Kubrick's 2001 which was a more cleaner, more methodical, Kubrick like Scott was a stickler for details,.there's a scene in 2001, where a passenger riding on a shuttle from a space station orbiting earth(the station is incredible)to a moon station, kinda drops his pen while writing notes, I mean as far as dropping in total zero gravity 😉, but anyway, he trys to catch it as it spins away from him,..its almost like slow motion, as it spins a stewardess catches it, she's bringing him dinner,..and that whole action in of itself is incredible because she enters said passenger's part of shuttle, and in order to do that she has to go from being upside-down to being right side up in order to serve him,.and there's this whole scene just on how she has to do this,..she's I think wearing magnetized boots,. it sounds tideous but I swear you won't be able to look away, (and there's great music during this whole scene Blue Danube, I think) because Kubrick made this big production out of something so simple, first because its being done in space,..and also maybe because in order to do this simple act will take a bit of finesse!,..its one of the reasons the movie is so long,..but like Scott, they didn't have sophisticated cgi, so they as directors had to use skills to draw you in and make you believe what you were seeing, if Kubrick were alive today, I don't know if he would be so inclined to use cgi,..for these directors, Carpenter, Cameron, cgi might be a short cut, in place of make-up effects,.elaborate sets, props,..Scott gives you this long pan of the ship before the crew wakes up in Alien,..maybe to show you just how big this ship is,..how it's big enough to get lost in,..then again when Ripley's trying to escape, you see that again, and he adds to the vastness of the ship,..steam,.smoke,..dark corridors,..dark corners you can't see around,..we could so see you on pins and needles, like we were all those years ago,..wondering "where is it,..I know its gonna jump out from some shadow and get her",..and I didn't see this when it came out,..I was still in school,..underage, it had an R rating, would've had to take the parents to get in and they so weren't fans of scifi, I was barely able to rangle them to take me to see Jaws,..and it was only because it was my birthday!,.kinda guilted them into it!😁,..so I didn't see this til a few years later, rented the VHS,.sitting in my room,..ALONE, ..in the dark,!!,..but long before I saw the movie,..the trailer alone scared the sh!+ out of me!,..do check out the trailer,..that screaming Parker did,..and obviously the slow painful death Lambert experienced, that Ripley heard over the comms,..that's what you hear in the trailer,.no video,..no pic other than that dam egg,..you just know its bad,..very bad,.and the dam narrator's voice "in space no one can hear you scream",..do check it out,..and check out 2001,..its long, seems tideous,..but its eloquent,.Scotts space travel more gritty,..messy,...also Aliens,..its good,..story continues,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

    If you are interested in watching the sequels, you may want to track down the Special Editions.
    - Aliens (1986) was cut down for its theatrical release, and some of the stronger visual ties to the first film were lost in favor of a tighter pace. The theatrical cut is still good in its own right, but director James Cameron pushed for the extended Special Edition very soon after the film's release, and he managed to accomplish that goal in 1991.
    - Alien 3 (1992) was absolutely massacred by the studio in its theatrical release. It was already a troubled production, but the film was further compromised by the deletion of key scenes highlighting the supporting cast. Director David Fincher disowned the film by the end of post-production, and the theatrical cut does not represent his intent. Fincher opted out of participating in the making of the 2003 Special Edition because of the lingering pain he associates with the film, but the longer cut is based on his notes, and editor Terry Rawlings considers it to be the proper version of the film.
    - Alien Resurrection (1997) is much like the first Alien in that the theatrical cut is actually the director's preferred cut. That said, the 2003 Special Edition of Resurrection is slightly preferred by some audiences for offering a few additional moments of humor and drama. Of the three sequels, it is the one with the most inconsequential alternate version.

      If you want to see what Alien might look like if it were made today, you can check out Ridley Scott's two recent prequels to his 1979 film, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). These films reveal more details about the Engineers, the giant alien species that was seen in the pilot's seat of the crashed spaceship. You can even watch these prequels before the sequels if you so choose.
      Also, Ridley Scott made another film that is most likely in the same fictional universe, Blade Runner (1982). It has recently received its own sequel, Blade Runner 2049 (2017). These two films are set on Earth, so there is no overlap between their stories and those of the Alien films. However, some of the technology is similar, including the presence of androids that can easily pass as human beings.
      Finally, if you enjoy video games, you may consider playing Alien: Isolation (2014). It is set between the first and second Alien films, and it follows Ripley's daughter as she seeks to find out what happened to her mother. Again, you can play this game before watching the sequels, since it contains no spoilers for those films.

    I think you might be referring to the style at the end. If so, this is an example of what's called "retro-futurism", or how the future was imagined by previous eras. This would be '70s futurism (Ballardian, specifically, soon to be replaced by the PC revolution and cyberpunk). For another example, the Fallout series uses an ersatz '50s futurism. Examining these dreams can tell you a lot about the dreamers (interesting thought; our era's vision will inevitably become a "futurism" of its own).
    I find acknowledging the concept to be helpful in making it less distracting.

    All Scott brothers movies are great! James Cameron did the sequel to this, and he did Terminator 2. The 2 best sequels ever made! The dining room table scene was not fully known, only to the actor and director. He wanted to get real reactions from the other actors!! The scene with the Alien in the chair with his chest bust out is a being called a Engineer. A being fully explained in the prequel of all alien movies, Prometheus! Engineers seed life on planets and if they don't like how the life is proceeding, they seed another life to wipe out the first, then destroy each other. So Engineers are responsible for Aliens humans and supposedly Predators and the technology for Replicants and Terminators!!! Replicants are from the movie Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049!!!

    Oh you watched the so-called director's cut. I say so called because even though director Ridley Scott himself supervised this cut, the thing was a mere commercial gimmick by the studio to renew interest for the movie in the eve of the release of the Alien Quatrology DVD pack. Scott himself mantains that the theatrical cut that was released back in 1979 is the definitive version of this movie.
    And i pwrsonally say that it is tge best version of the movie - ney - that IT IS the movie.
