Max's hallucinations are of people he failed to save.
He really is haunted even if it's only in his head.
    Nux did redeem himself.
    Furiosa had a hemopneumothorax.
An accumulation of air and blood in the pleural cavity, between the lungs and pleura, which is the membrane surrounding them.
What Max did to Furiosa at the end was put a hole in her side to allow the blood in her chest cavity to drain out allowing her lung to re inflate.
This is the knowledge you get when your Mom was a med tech and your Dad was a Physician's Assistant after 21 years as a Navy Corpsman.

More than the previous three Mad Max movies, you get a sense of purpose from the enemy. The look of beautification on Nux's face as Immortal Joe promises to personally carry him into Valhalla along with their worship and association with vehicles down to the war boys spraying their teeth with chrome paint to resemble vehicle grills before their sacrifice shows them ruled by their unique religion. The movie can simply be put described as a chase to and from a place that no longer exists. But to make that simple premise into an exciting and interesting movie for two hours is astonishing.

My plans for my birthday fell through so plan B was a spontaneous trip to the cinema. No idea what was playing so we had a quick look. Jurassic World or Mad Max: Fury Road? Had a quick scan and Mad Max was BY FAR getting the better reviews. Most of my friends wanted to see Jurassic World because they were more familiar with the franchise but being the birthday boy I insisted on Mad Max. Just imagine wandering into this movie with no real expectation, seeing it on the big screen and not knowing the reputation it has gotten since. It. Was. Amazing!!!

24:15 Max is great as a protagonist as he is haunted by the dreams of his dead wife and child. So in a lot of the media he will end up, reluctantly, helping women and children due to those nightmares but never is one to make it sexual in a world where the women are so often used sexually as property.

6:32 "That's not very sustainable, is it?"
    Indeed, not.
"Like there are so many other ways you can bring the people water."
Yeah. When I was in the US Navy, they taught us _thorough_ hydration. In boot camp, we carried around _canteens_ that we filled from _fountains_ that we operated _individually._ _Wasted_ water was much more likely to happen in the _shower;_ not from the _canteen._ They taught us, if you're getting enough water, your urine is clear. Otherwise, you're not getting enough water.
One thing we prioritize in the US Navy is efficient water use in a shipboard environment in which there are perpetual limits on the amount of potable water available. You want to find the best compromise between using it efficiently and keeping your crew hydrated.
_This_ distribution system was _not_ drawn up with _either_ of those in mind.

41:28 Furiosa had a condition called a "pneumothorax". If your lung is punctured, every inhalation pushes air through the hole into your chest cavity. As the air pressure in the cavity rises, it crushes the lungs, preventing them from expanding to draw-in air, hence Furiosa's increasingly-shallow gasping. Max punched a hole in her abdominal wall to release some of that pent-up pressure. It works, but it's not fun.

It supports the idea that Max is someone who has had training in that kind of field medicine.

To understand the back story behind this movie, you probably have to go back to the 3 original films that starred Mel Gibson and also appreciate the time in which those films were made. Al lot of the main concerns of the time were built into these films, that resulted in the concept of this dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. The films were written and made in Australia in the late 70's and 80's, so you may notice that nearly all of the actors in this new film were Australian, besides 4 of the main characters. This future is the result of a nuclear holocaust, brought about by the Cold War that involved the Soviet Union and the rest of the free world and threatened mutual assured destruction. There was also an oil shock, and the newspaper headlines were all speculating that the world would soon run out of oil in the very near future, which caused some alarm and panic. The reason why they wanted a perfect child in this film was because if you read between the lines, the people were suffering the effects of exposure to nuclear fallout, including birth defects etc. That's why a lot of the characters had things wrong with them and they needed oxygen etc. to survive. Prior to the oil shocks, car makers kept upping the ante on loud and powerful engines. It was the age of muscle cars and a lot of the models made in Australia during this time were right up there in terms of being gas guzzling monsters and it was a big part of the culture. Afterwards, you then saw a massive trend towards much smaller, fuel efficient cars. A lot of films from the 80's portray some similarities in terms of a dystopian future as well, as there was a sense that the world was becoming increasingly dangerous and decadent, and things were changing rapidly from where they were around the 50's and 60's. There was a sense that things were on a downward trajectory. For instance, the bad guys in the first movie were an outlaw motor cycle gang. They actually hired one of these gangs in real life to participate in the movie. Music and culture were changing too - AC/DC were probably the biggest local band in Australia at the time. The first movie was unbelievably made for $300,000 but its success won bigger budgets for the next two. The guy who played the main villain in this film was actually a main villain in the earlier films. What tends to be good about a lot of the best films made in this era is the underlying themes that capture the spirit of the time and give the movies heart. I know a lot of younger people generalise a lot about older films coming across as being a bit dated, which can often be true, but the Mad Max originals (particularly the second and third films) stand the test of time, much like Star Wars and a few other titles have. Robocop is another interesting one. That also said a lot of things about social division, unemployment, crime, drugs, consumerism, environmental degradation and corporate America on steroids in the 80's. I've noticed that some people don't get all of that though and just treat it as a run of the mill "action movie". Aliens was also partially about 80's corporate greed and ambition. I find a lot of newer films invest heavily on CGI special effects and action but they're not as clever or deep and meaningful with regards to plot, themes and character development. The nostalgia about this time is also fascinating but I appreciate that some of these things might not stand out if you grew up in a country that was largely detached from all of this, due to being behind the Soviet Iron Curtain. I'd love to see some discovery and reaction to some of these films from a bygone era on this channel. I'm sure there are plenty of other suggestions coming through though. I was hoping they'd make a few sequels to this film but I think it had some hiccups and the two main characters really didn't get along at all apparently. What made it more uncomfortable was the filming locations being out in the remote desert, and I'd imagine that some of the bigger names on this film would have had the potential to behave like divas. I don't think it was the success that the film studio had forecast, and it had quite a big budget to recoup.

    • @ShadowyFox_86

Apparently the two mains did end up on good terms. Part of the difficulty was that Tom Hardy wasn't given a ton of material to work with at a time and struggled to deliver what the director was looking for. He finally got it and things looked up from there, but part of his tensions towards other was because of that.

didnt the actor that played the bad guy in road warrior come back and play as joe immortan in this movie? pretty sure he did*** sorry i meant mad max not road warrior***

@@kennethv5250 No, it was the bad guy in the first Mad Max film, Toecutter(Hugh Keays-Byrne), that came back to play Immortan Joe. He died in December of 2020.
The villain of the Road Warrior was Lord Humungus.
And as far as recycling goes, the actor who played Gyro Captain (Bruce Spence) in the Road Warrior came back as a different character Jedediah in Beyond Thunderdome.

Any plans to react to the original Mad Max trilogy (1980-1985)?
    [1980-MAR-21] MAD MAX (1h33m11s)
    [1982-MAY-21] MAD MAX 2 : THE ROAD WARRIOR (1h35m30s)
    [1985-JUL-10] MAD MAX 3 : BEYOND THUNDERDOME (1h46m56s)

This version was fun and the vehicles were pretty cool, but it makes no sense unless you have seen the original MAD MAX series with Mel Gibson (the one true Max). They are far better, action packed, and easier to follow. 'Mad Max', 'The Road Warrior', and my favorite, the 3rd one 'Beyond Thunder Dome' with the wild kids, has a lot more heart.

heh, chekovs car door. if you dont get it im sorry for you......"a lot of betrayal in this film" well what do you expect in a post-apoc world where everyone is out for themselves? youll have few if any friends, all willing to kill you for what little you have. are you willing to kill to survive? or just lie down and die. just sayin', not hatin'. i really do like your reaction, instant sub
