The actor who played the Predator was Kevin Peter Hall. He was also the black chopper pilot at the end. The director wanted to give him some face time for being such a good sport during filming. Kevin Peter Hall also played Harry in Harry And The Henderson's. A comedy about a family that finds Bigfoot in the woods and brings him back to the suburbs with them. Its a fun family, G-rated, comedy. In 1992 Kevin Peter Hall was in a bad car accident in Los Angeles. He was rushed to the hospital. During surgery he was accidentally given contaminated blood and passed away. RIP KEVIN PETER HALL

The reason the Predator took of his helmet and shoulder canon was because it saw Dutch as an extremely worthy opponent worthy of hand to hand combat.
The Predators are basically a race of hunters, who go around the universe and collect trophies from the most dangerous prey they can find. They seek a challenge. Which is why the people who end up being an easy kill are just strung up, while people who put up a fight (like Billy) become a trophy. When Dutch managed to partly destroy the Predators gear and even wounded him, it was surprised that he managed to do that. Thats why it pressed him against the wall and examined his skull for a moment - it made sure that Dutch was truly just a normal human, because he was likely the first human ever to really hurt and challenge it.
When it realized that yes, Dutch is just an ultra badass human, it decided to even the playing field´and go man against man, to show Dutch respect for his skills.
They also dont hurt kids, pregnant women or generally unarmed people, because all of those cant really defend themselves, which means it would be extremely dishonorable and cowardly for a Predator to kill them. When a Pred ignores these rules and kills without honor, it is outlawed and its basically open season on it for the rest.

Billy was a truly great character. He sensed something beyond normal from the start. This was a hardened veteran of an elite team that saw the worst the world had to offer for likely decades. Never afraid of any man or situation, this encounter was something that terrified his very being. In the end, he realized there was no escape... the only question was if he was going to go down via an ambush.. or if he was going to stand his ground and make one last stand. Although it didn't buy much time for his team, it DID buy the predator's respect. Granted, the "prize" was to be made a trophy. But nonetheless, Billy made a real impression on the predator. It saw Billy sensed him and was looking at him. And he chose to fight him 1 on 1....hand to hand. Respect for this earth warrior.

the US army, in the 50s, actually did studies on Native American men and found that Native American men, when they don't cut their hair, act as an extremely effective early warning system for approaching enemies while in the field. that benefit was not deemed useful enough to make the Army allow them to grow out their hair. gas masks couldn't seal properly with long hair.

The Predator is not invisible, it's using some advanced technology to bend light and camouflage itself to whatever background is available. As far as shooting and wasting ammo, they weren't. The sergeant shouted 'contact', which alerts the rest of the team that he's engaged the enemy. Until the order to break contact is given, they will usually fire until their weapons run out of ammo. They almost certainly have more ammo with them, so it's not a big risk.

One of the greatest sci-fi horror action movies of all time :D
    Edit:
    Guerrillas not Gorillas :D
Billy isn't psychic but he's spiritual, and he's a tracker so he can tell exactly how many people, what gear they have etc, just by their tracks. Also, the bullet spray and shells left behind, he can tell how a battle went down just by looking at the area.
    A Hook is the radiophone.
The Jungle Salad scene wasn't exactly a waste of ammo though... all the team knows is Mac screams Contact and was firing... they join him, see that Blain is downed, and they open fire in the same direction Mac is firing. They don;t know yet that they're firing at an alien, all they know is Blain is dead, and there's enemies in the area.
Definitely give Predator 2 a go, it's underrated.

This movie is a treasure trove of oft-repeated lines. "I don't have time to bleed." "If it bleeds, we can kill it." "Get to the choppah!" And more. The Predator's vision is infra-red based. Heat sources. It's not a "technology" that fritzes in and out because of water.

Trixy's Q: "Does Billy have powers or what?" -- I think they wrote Billy as kind of a Ranger class in DnD, with super good perception, survival, nature skills, etc. ... it is kind of the Hollywood trope of a modern indigenous person that is as excellent at these skills as his ancestors... but we don't know Billy's background so he could have grown up using these kind of native skills.

That horrible vision is infrared, so if you were hunting a warm blooded creature it would actually be very good. That's why modern militaries use it to see in conditions where our eyes would not be very good.
And Billy just seems clairvoyant because his character is an American native so is very good at tracking and scouting and noticing things that are out of place in a natural setting.

Quick clarification, but Billy isn’t clairvoyant, he’s a tracker, meaning he watches and listens to the environment around him to help him in the battlefield. He doesn’t spiritually sense the Predator, he observed his surroundings and felt something was off in the jungle. Think of a cat who smells prey, but also smells something dangerous nearby too. It’ll freeze up looking for what’s wrong around it before moving forward.

Hawkins was played by Shane Black, who wrote and/or directed a ton of movies like Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3, and almost every other action movie set at Christmas. (Also, the one really disappointing Predator movie that doesn't involve Xenomorphs.)
He was cast because they wanted to have a writer on set in case they needed lines. He wrote the two p***** jokes and gave them to his own character, probably because he didn't want anyone else to be held accountable for such crass humor.

Great reaction to an awesome movie. Scared the shit out of me as a kid and led to a lot of sleepless nights.
The last trap wasn't a two-parter, though. The idea was that the predator would walk into it, knock the stick loose and when the log dropped, the vine would be jerked up into the Predator's crotch and pull him up into the spikes. Predator noticed the spikes and went around. It was just dumb luck that he stood under the log. It took me an embarrassingly long time to work that out.

Billy wasn't necessarily psychic, but he was an absolutely masterful *top* tracker/stalker, who could 'read' even subtle signs, and who had an 'awareness' when something wasn't 'right'. He realized, near the end, that it wasn't going to be stopped, conventionally, so he took a stand - one-on-one - against it. Hoping that, maybe, he might slow it down? And give the others a chance to 'get to the choppa'! Unfortunately, he obviously didn't last long.
I was impressed, over-all, with how you (at times) quickly picked-up on things, despite the fact that you don't have much, if any, knowledge of military tactics or equipment, or hunting. You really seemed to 'feel'/read the situation.
His 'fuzzy vision' was because he was 'seeing' thermal (heat) emissions, rather than regular light. Thermal radiation is courser (especially at body-heat wavelengths) than regular, optical, vision. The advantage is that your target/prey will tend to stand-out (significantly) against a cooler background.
    Over all, very good reaction!

The flaw with the logic of this movie was that the predator killed poncho when he was badly injured and unarmed. And if they all threw their guns down it should been no sport thus it should have let them go.

    YES!!
MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE!
Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid.
He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused.
Kevin Peter Hall RIP was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch being 7'2".
The Predator suit was done by Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches.
Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. No hot meals were allowed due to the extreme heat in Mexico. They only ate protein bars.
The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts.
Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us."
The scene where the stuntman falls off the cliff and lands in the water actually blew out his kneecap.
It was 110° in the shade, while it was 42° at night.
It rained for 2 weeks, making filming even more difficult.
The film was was a box office and critical success, making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

The movie ALIEN VS PREDATOR is really well done and explains a lot about the Predator's 'warrior code', as well as having epic monster fight scenes. It's a fun one for you to check out. I told Magi the same.
Many of these big. beefy men became politicians and made an impact off the screen as well.
Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America as a penny-less Austrian immigrant, became a body builder, a 5 time Mr. Universe winner and 7 time Mr. Olympia titles, became an iconic Hollywood action hero, married into the prestigious Kennedy family, and served as Governor of California (2003-2011).
Carl Weathers (Dillon) was a professional football player who went on to star in several action movies, most notably as Apollo Creed in the ROCKY movies and serves on the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Jesse 'The Body' Ventura (Blain) was a member of the Navy Seals, a professional wrestler, served a 4 year term as mayor of a town in Minnesota and later was elected as Governor of that state from 1999-2003.
Sonny Landham (Billy) ran for governor of Kentucky but pulled out of the race for lack fund raising and would have been the 3rd member of the cast to be a governor.
Richard Chaves (Poncho) is used to the types of terrain seen in the movie as an actual Vietnam Veteran from the U.S. Army.
Sadly, Kevin Peter Hall, the 7'2" actor who played the PREDATOR in the first 2 movies died of AIDS he contracted from a blood transfusion he received after a car accident.

What they did when they first made contact, spraying the jungle with bullets is a real tactic called defoliation. When a squad knows the immediate location of a threat without knowing the numbers they pound the area with overwhelming force. You cannot outrun a bullet. and a large portion of those rounds penetrated deep into the jungle. They don't know it's staying in the trees. Anything on foot would have been screwed.

Movies aren't made like this these days because CG is cheaper than physical special effects. The thermal vision of the Predator was some early IR and CG mixed. It is very hard to create a 100% replication of an explosion in CG because a real explosion has so many variables and effects happening in real time, something even today's computers can't quite emulate. They continually get better, but nothing can ever replace the real thing in terms of dynamics. A solid knock-down drag-out fight is uncommon in films these days. Why? It's not what they give us?
80's and 90's movies have a special set of charms specific to their decades. It was good, action, excitement, romance, fun kind of stuff and the fact that it is so rare these days is almost a crime.

It was by sheer coincidence that the predator was standing right under the trunk so you could kick the trigger and drop it right on the predator.

Love your reaction to my favorite Arnie movie! - I'm sure more knowledgeable die-hard fans can correct me if wrong, but I believe like most Arnie movies, he was due to take on the big-bad in hand-to-hand combat in the end and beat him:
If memory serves it was Arnold himself who thought it was unrealistic that he'd beat this powerful alien that way, & so it was changed to show that the Predator was superior in every way, including beating the crap out of him!, & while Dutch was skilled with his traps, it ended up being pure luck more than anything the Predator ended up where he needed it to spring a trap!
Think that's why it's my top Arnie movie- unlike the usual 'beat up the main villain no problem' ending, you see him afraid, exhausted, outmatched & barely scraping through the ordeal!

There's a SHITLOAD of CRAZY TRIVIA about this film. Sonny Landham, Billy, had a bodyguard... to protect THE REST OF THEM from him. There are two future FREAKING GOVERNORS in this film and Billy also campaigned for it. The Predator was originally a silly lizard played by Jean-Claude Van Damme doing karate chops in a godzilla suit in the jungle but they soon realized it was stupid. The actors woke up at 5.00 am to train their muscles in secret to be bigger than the next guy. Jesse Ventura, Blain the one with the (ahem) "minigun" (that's how you call that revolving machine gun), was punched in the face by the guy American Sniper was about.

See if I can spell it. Shfatzen-ekka, something like that. I'm so impressed that he spent a good portion of his early years in Hollywood with an accent coach to speak english better.
Also, you have to imagine in 1987, there hadn't been anything remotely close to the level of blood in this movie, even in the horror/slasher movies, so this was really next level gross/horrific.

"True Lies" stars Arnold Schwarzenegger AND was made by the same guy who made the first two Terminator movies. I just rewatched it myself a month ago and was literally blown away by it...the action is incredibly good, the story rocks, and the comedy is hilarious.
Also on that same note, I think you had mentioned about watching the Terminator "trilogy" in those videos. I'm guessing people already told you but only the first two really matter, since those are the only two made by the original creator of the franchise. There are actually like 5 or 6 movies overall at this point, some of which feature Arnold and some don't but again, the first two are really the ones that matter.
