- Ronald Grigor Suny, Distinguished University Professor of History at the University of Michigan, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago, and Senior Researcher at the National Research University - Higher School of Economics in Saint Petersburg, Russia, sits down with CivilNet’s Eric Hacopian to talk about Armenia’s domestic and regional challenges.
Professor Suny holds Russia responsible for betraying Armenia during the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, and criticizes the U.S. for not taking practical steps to prevent autocratic Azerbaijan’s aggression against the democratic Armenian enclave.

The Genocide started in Sumagait, Baku and the rest of the Artsakh over the years. The turks are professional when it comes to Genocide. They know how to start from one city to another, and then a village until everybody is gone. You are one of those when it comes to Armenian life, you feel uncomfortable to talk about Justice.
You loved soviet union? Really? The same soviet that killed all our intellectuals just because they feel like it? Who are you? If your father or grandfather was send to Siberia for his opinion, maybe you could feel different. We haven't forgotten how nasty and brutal they were and they continue to be.
Bravo 👏
Hes talking about Soviet society pre Putin which was much less nationalistic and also a legitimate ally of Armenia. Not the case now.
@@dennydritic2628 Having traveled in the USSR from 1967 through 1973 and having friends there in Soviet Armenia (one trip was with Ron) I will say that I found the people very nationalistic (and they loved Americans)
@@shaqueha.5017 .. Discussing Justice is one thing , a purely personal , or by limited thought group , BUT, thinking about Reality and taking actions a totally different matter , Reality mandates and predates , with vengeance , against Justice.. unless you are US gov. Justice remains notes in history , perhaps , while Future to a nation , albeit one with many challenges, determined by how the Nation Reasons , Dares and Works against the challenges towards a future rather than being pulled and hinged into history ..
Would have preferred a political analyst over a historian , in particular to the type of questions raised and the critical circumstances the nation is at . As pointed out more than once , historian about past , and somewhat present , but mainly about “what” were the events , a narrative subjective discussion, vs objective analytical and forward reasoning …
Ron was a leader on my 1st trip to the USSR (including Armenia) in 1967
Just about halfway through and I dont think I can listen any more to his nonsense. First, he claims that he misses the Soviet union, one of the most evil empires. Then he says what happened in Artsakh wasn't genocide but gaza is, when azeris have repeatedly stated their intentions to drive Armenians out, that we are not native, etc, while Israelis officials have never made such claims about Palestinians. Its as if he thinks that genocide is defined by the number of people killed rather than the intention.
If anyone that was born or lives in the West, and says I missed Soviet Union needs to be exposed as to who he is serving. I suggest doing a research about the kgb and the Armenian diaspora. You will have a better understanding as to who Suny and this fake patriots in the west are.
The guest is well informed and reasonably neutral. Loved the interview.
I am about one third into the discussion. And this is my reaction.🤦
Of course l have heard of Ronald Suny. I am very disappointed.
it is dangerous to misjudge russia. her big existence in history n her masive potential. the turks and the magyars have been taking very careful approach, and works hard to find middle ground based on intertional law. I hope armenia does not make a big strategic mistake.
CHARLIE DoNLEA, TWENTY YEARS LATER
Finally a sensible and thoughtful interview from Mr. Hacopian
@@faigmalikov8117 in what sense is it sensible? Making shocking statements? He’s a historian from what I understand. He should not be taking the position of a speaker on behalf of others, or leadership in political analysis, however.
14:20 You don’t believe it’s a genocide, Professor Suni? Where will Artsakhsis now propagate their culture? You’re a professor?
By international criminal law it was a clear case of Genocide, Genocide doesn't have to include mass killing, inflicting serious mental harm to a group of people constitutes to Genocide. Please don't talk about law if u don't have an education in it!
That was one of your top five guests that wasn't a politician very good interview I was enlightened I appreciate it.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Really outrageous interview. It is a case study for learning why Armenia is unable to have a national narrative to save itself. If this guy is an Armenian intellectual then Armenia does not need any enemies.
In the early stages of the Artsakh liberation struggle Ronald made some sort of statement to the effect of “Azeri flag should fly in Stepanakert.” He barely got out of there in one piece. His current in-laws are from Turkey.
@@samuelgurgen3436 How outrageous! Why would Eric even interview him after that.
@@samuelgurgen3436
Provide sources or it didn't happen. Enough of the stupid Armenian gossip. I swear our people are like petty women sometimes. He said she said they said. Enough of that shit! Give us the receipts, or it didn't happen.
Innocent until proven guilty.
@@sakogekchyan7366Stop spreading stereotypes. As a Behavioral therapist this kind of behaviors exist every where. It’s not dependent upon the race! 😠
@@sakogekchyan7366You’re creating false stereotypes against our people!
Excellent interview
Brilliant analysis as usual . Unless you represent a "party" rather than your nation.
Good interview
This guy needs a reality check, this is sad
Which guy? And in regards to what exactly?
@@samuelgurgen3436 both, you need to figure the what yourself.
@@ykamreki Putin betrayed prigozin what is Armenia infront of that ?
I didn't get his answer and thought about Armenia. If somebody understood please let me know.
@@robertb2932 This is what stuck in my mind: He likes pashick and is amazed how he got elected even after loosing the war. And he also said Armenia should make concessions to azer. Blah blah blah. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Excellent interview. Very interesting. Though I think that Armenia should align with Russia.
And where has Russian alignment gotten us so far?
It wasnt Armenias choice to part from Russia.
