  • Sweating it out on the rowing machine is a great cardio workout, and unlike the treadmill, it's usually sitting empty so you can hop on and get working at any time. Added bonus: the rowing machine also works the upper back, arms, legs, and, yes, even core. And while it may seem like an obvious movement, there's definitely some technique involved. Watch as endurance athlete Josh Crosby from Equinoxteaches us how to master the stroke and shares his tips for maximizing this workout.

    Good to see a demonstration by a real rower who knows what they are doing. Lots of people use the rowing machine with poor technique and there are even videos on RUclips which show incorrect technique.

      If you row like this in the video, you actually burn more calories than running (unless you run 6 mph or faster). I typically burn 700 to 900 calories an hour. 100 strokes should be four minutes, so you do the math...

      +sam hope. Go with a concept 2 rower. New one is about $950 shipped. Can probably find a used on for $650 or buy one from an indoor rowing competition for about the same. They tend to sell them once the competition is over so they don't have to freight them back. Call Concept 2 to find out where the next indoor rowing comp is. The water rower is nice looking but is awkward and stiff and doesn't have the same smooth acceleration like the C2. The Water Rower also has awkward geometry from feet to handle and it is really expensive. $1,500 - $2,500. www.rowindoors.com

    • @mellocello187
      @mellocello187 7 лет назад +3

      Not everyone prefers Concept2. I prefer Water rowers ( and I row on the water also) and I know others who do as well. I prefer the geometry as it feels more like the boat. And do not underestimate the value of a comfortable seat when you are taking 1,000-2,000 strokes per workout.

    The technique can be a little hard to master at first but it's the only way to get full benefit. One thing I note though is that they were both keeping their arm at the same level throughout.I find the higher I raise my arms on the pull stroke (mimicking digging the oars in) the more I can feel it in my arms and lower arms again on the recovery, Much more like actually rowing a boat. The sound is so relaxing too like rowing across a glass smooth lake with the only sound you hear is the sound of your oars stroking through the water.

  • @AlexTschiember68

    I was thinking about to buy one of those machine cause it seems comfortable to use and easy to stow when not used. But watching this video, I'm suddenly not so confident in the stiffness of the frame.

      In the meantime I bought the Waterrower, and I also tested the Concept 2.
      The Concept 2 has to me a slightly better working position and its control-console is more complete. The bearing system of the seat seems a bit more stable also (anyway quite good on both models).
      The pulling system is giving some strange feeling after a 30 min set due to the chain-system which is giving some tiny vibrations.
      The Waterrower is quiter and more compact. The pulling system is smoother.
      In conclusion, both models are very good.

    So now we know what you'd look like if you only used that machine and that is like that guy i.e. weirdly skinny/disproportionate. So use this in tandem with regular weight training, for your cardio component.

    step 1: buy some concept2 ergs, not these

      Disagree. I row on water, on Concept2s, and bought a WaterRower. Love the WaterRower. Concept2s are soul-killing machines for masochists who will wish they were dead.

      I finally upgrade from a concept 2 C to a water rower. Found a deal on Letgo for a year old First Degree
      Fitness Viking rower. I bought the concept 2 about 14 years ago when water rowers
      were insanely expensive. Biggest gripe is how loud the concept is. That's fine if you're at a gym, but if you're in a small condo like I am then it's a bit much. Today there are a million different types of water rowers from cheap to expensive, can imagine many of them are mediocre. Concept 2 is an excellent classic rower that we all grew up using but it's more mechanical than the belt driven water rowers. The differences aren't huge though so really comes down to preference.

    They're finishing with the hands way too high. If they do it for long period or years like that, they will develop lower back problems. They need to finish with the hands closer to the navel.

    Are we all sure this guy is a professional?
    I mean, low impact? SERIOUSLY?

    • @PENDANTturnips
      @PENDANTturnips 8 лет назад +16

      It is low impact, compared to things like sprinting, jogging, hitting a heavy bag, playing sports, crossfit, etc
      Rowing is very easy on the joints and bones.

      +Lauren he is world champion of rowing so yeah he is a professional. low impact just mean you don't have to make a high impact on the ground like when you're running or jumping. bike is low impact too.

    • @ItsCheball
      @ItsCheball 8 лет назад +1

      I understand now guys, thanks again. Got mixed up between low impact on the body and the pain of rowing. Thanks for the correction!
