Great Video. Thanks so much. My favorite machine whenI had to complete the cardiac rehab program at the university hospital. I actually became the top patient record holder for 2500m. I saw your rowing 101 video and I just followed that to heart no pun intended. I finally got a used concept 2 and decided to watch your videos again and realized I have a lot do to catch up to my personal best 11 months ago LOL.
You're in good company with the cardiac rehab. It's what got Greenville Indoor Rowing's Lowell Caylor (who played for the Cleveland Browns) started on it. Best of luck on your road to recovery, keep rowing and you'll get there.
Keep us posted! - Sarah
@w2 Oh yeah. I have been running and mountain biking only (mostly slow running) plus I have horses to take care of after I finished the program, because I jkust hate gyms. I know something is missing. By following your tips I am approaching sub 2 minutes for 500 meters (3K session) Great tip on the drag factor. 122 seems to be where I am at. Rowing is so good. I am late-comer but hopefully will be a lifer. BTW I broke my PR a few days ago. Thanks again.
That was an impressive workshop. Very well articulated, very well demonstrated with the rationale provided for every suggested technique in easy understandable progressions. Thank you for the enlightenment, all the way from New Zealand.
So glad you liked it! Keep us posted on how you do. Row on!
Single great video needed to get into rowing, using a proper technique. Thanks

@@UCanRow2 It totally does, finally my legs are feeling it, and not my hands :)
I'm interested; where can I buy Concept 2? Thanks.
Fantastic video! I’ve been using my sister’s rowing machine off and on for the past thirty years. I was close to good technique but not this good. When I see people using the Concept machine at my local YMCA, I wonder where are the instructors? I can’t wait to try out what I’ve learned today. Can I row every day or should I spread it out? I’m 68yo and just trying to get a little cardio and muscle workout. Thanks again!
Thank you so much!! We are on a mission to get more people rowing better so they can love it and get as much out of it as we do! We've trained loads of YMCA instructors, but definitely not all of them. Hopefully yours will come our way soon!
You can certainly row most days if that's what you like to do! My advice is to mix it up, with a bit of longer rows, some higher intensity work (very important as we age), and strength training. I'm also a big believer in at least one full rest day a week, it's amazing what taking a day OFF will do for your fitness! - Sarah
Since you are very familiar with the Concept 2 rower, pls help with a question? Would my son,
6”3” , be able to use this (pull cord over bent knee position ) machine? One version is longer but not sure that will do the trick. Thanks 😊
Great question! Your son definitely has the height to be a great rower! Tell me a bit more. What brand of machine are you looking at?
I have a hydraulic rowing machine, does the positioning work the same way?
It should be similar, but you may find that your stroke is shorter and your hands have to drop down to move the arms. If you'd like some help with it, feel free to post a video to our RowStrong group on Facebook and we can give you personalized tips!

Are you driving thru the heel, the ball of the foot or the entirety of the foot?
Midfoot to heel mostly, but the toes are also in contact with the foot stretcher.
What model of concept 2 is that ?
That's a Concept2 RowErg with standard legs (the former Model D).
If you have small feet do you recommend placing the foot at the bottom or at the top or middle? Thank you
You would still aim to get the strap over the ball of your foot, somewhere around the top of your shoelaces if you're rowing on a Concept2 machine. What kind do you have?
@UCanRow2 I have a very basic rowing machine. It's a homcom 16 Levels Adjustable Resistance Rowing Machine
I took a look at your machine, it looks like maybe you don't have much of a choice about where you put your foot? And it looks like the footpad swivels?
If so, that's a bit of a different configuration so lifting your heels doesn't come into play the same way. Have a look at this video, it might be helpful! ruclips.net/video/S3wo8UeqDWA/видео.html
@@UCanRow2 thank you so much for your helpful response
