I became a Vegetarian eight years ago and it was a little difficult to find and prepare food for that kind of diet.. Now "Health food aisles" have sprung up everywhere.. I have never felt better.. Hanna I'm proud of you for doing what you are doing you will never regret it.. Keep it up.. Broccoli is my favorite snack food..
"Spreading the correct information is the best information." Well said, wise words! I only recently found your channel on my mad dash to find vegan, Japanese goodies. You seem incredibly friendly and laid back, and this video was most helpful. Thanks a bunch! :]
Going vegan is something I am all for, and I hope to slowly integrate myself into. Seeing videos like this and hearing people share their experiences definitely helps motivate me to get there!
I'm so happy to see all of these options! Just found out I'm severely allergic to wheat, eggs and milk. I've been heartbroken because I didn't know how I would be able to manage Japan if I ever get the chance to go there. This made that dream of mine come back to life!
so happy that i found your channel! i'm traveling to Japan next week and was nervous about finding vegan friendly restaurants and snacks, so this is so helpful!
I’ve moved to Japan (Inaka) recently and this video is so so so helpful thank you! 🙏 having access to these convenience stores makes travelling as a vegan in Japan so easy 🥰 thank you for taking the time to make this very helpful and informative video 🙏🌻
Amazing, thank you so much for the effort. Muji has two vegan curries, the Chana Masala curry and the Baigan Till Masala curry (Apple Vegetable curry contains honey), as well as many snacks like Oats Sable Chocolate Cookies.
Thank you so much for this video!!! I've been vegan for a few months now and will move to Japan in a few weeks, so I'm excited to check out some of the things you have shown in the video. Also: I really enjoyed the whole style of this video :) I'll definitely be back and watch more :) Greetings from Germany
Hanna, nice to meet you! I can't understand English. But I is watching your videos. I am non meet eater. My recommendation at seven eleven is bananas, pineapple, Japanese pickles, tofu, sweet roasted chestnuts.
First time to make a comment here! Thanks for the amazing video! Although I am not vegan/vegetarian myself but as a fellow RUclipsr, I make videos dedicated to people from my culture (including videos about food because we have our own restrictions on food as well) I can relate about how things are not clear on the label most of the time so honestly, before making any food video I always contact the factory to make sure of the ingredients before publishing that on the internet. That being said, from my humble experience I figured that most factories would list the probability of having dairy, eggs, animal products..etc JUST IN CASE IF the factory make other products that include those ingredients. WHY? because here in Japan customers are VERY picky and they may sue a factory even on the slightest mistake that's no.1, and no.2 because they can't assure you that all their workers stay in the same place working from 9 to 5 . There is a possibility that the worker in the pastry section for example being called to help workers in the meat section for an hour or so. so what if by mistake a tiny bit of meat has fell in the pastry he is making? As a big company/factory most of them would prefer to be safe than sorry and would just write that dairy, eggs or animal products ..etc are being used in the same factory so there is a possibility that your food may contain them in most cases the food doesn't contain these products it's just there for safety. Once again thanks for the amazing video it was reallllllly enjoyable
You seem like an awesome Vegan and shouldn't feel pressured by anyone to feel otherwise. As for not being sure about whether something is vegan or not I'm sure it's the same everywhere to some extent. Here in Australia we have fairly strict labeling but we still have to contact companies to be sure of a lot of products. Luckily it's not just up to one person though, and when people do it they often make a note somewhere on the net about it. Hopefully that becomes more common in Japan as more Vegans go there and live there and then google will help search out those answers.
Hannah, thank you so much for this. Today after walking around a lot, as I am a tourist in Japan, I was coming back to the hostel and was starving, but had no strength to go someplace and wait for dinner, I also have no money, but the one thing I had was unlimited WiFi so I watched your video, got to the nearest Lawson and bought the weird but delicious side creamy salad thing, another salad and that vegan chocolate. Thank you for that! For the first time I didn’t look like a golden retriever trying to find something vegan at the store.
Hahaha wow I never thought that it would offer immediate help to someone in need in Japan and I'm so glad that it did. Did you like the weird creamy side salad thing?
I was vegan in America for 4 years before moving to Japan. I don't live in Tokyo so there's not as much available, and my husband is very against the idea of veganism even if only for me, so I want to at least eat vegan when I'm eating alone for dietary reasons and to cut down on animal suffering at least somewhat so I'm happy for this vegan snack video. Thank you!
We also have the sometimes-misleading allergen warnings here in the USA, referring to potential cross contamination rather than actual ingredients. Obviously being fluent in a language that's on the package makes it much easier, but it can still make it much harder to quickly rule things out for those of us not too fastidious to eat things processed in the same place as non-vegan foods.
Loooved this videoooo! I wanna live in Tokyo as soon as I can, and I'm vegan too. I've been researching abt vegan food in Japan so I won't go crazy once I'm there xD Even tho I study Japanese and will be able to read the ingredients and stuff, if it's hard to find food I can eat when it's written in my language, in other language will be even harder xD Also to know where to find everything, it's always good to do a research. Thanks for all the information! Greetings from Brazil ~ :)
I went to Japan in 2017. Conbini were a nice break from the usual Clif Bars and Kettle Chips of American 7/11s, and in many ways I prefer them (speaking as a strict vegan). My favorite conbini snack (and one of the healthiest) is dried sweet potato strips. IDK how common it is, I found it in a 7/11 in Shimokita. You can also get fruit juice with pulp at some Family Marts, and regular fruit juice almost everywhere. And I practically lived on those Macrobio bars from Morinaga! Especially as they contain beet sugar (tensai satou) as opposed to white sugar.
THANK YOU. I've seen so many discouraging videos, where they were like "you can only eat these 3 things from convinies", this makes me feel like i won't actually starve :)
Yeah I remember reading and hearing that too before coming here and they couldn't be more wrong. There's actually a TONNE of different foods that are available they just usually require a little more effort to find :)
Hannah, this vid is so informative! You could add Nattou and Kongnyaku, these are vegan foods^^ However almost all foreigners detest and avoid them because of their texture and or flavor^^
Thanks for sharing! Not a vegan, but I am trying to start eating more ethically. Lawsons is my least favourite! I only went once and got food poisoning! Ironically from meat 😂. But looks like their vego/vegan options are great!
I am not vegan and I am not planning of coming to Japan but I really enjoyed this video. It's really informative. Fun to see that there is such a variety of foods and snacks in convenience stores.
Thanks for this! I'm currently living in a not-so-major city in China and planning to make a similar type of video. I'm hoping to move to Japan soon. It definitely seems to be better in Japan for convenience stores!
Also, you saying the stuff there at the end, the personal purity thing that some vegans get stuck on, is sooooo bad for the movement I think! Obviously do your best, but some people are a bit much. (But if it makes them happy I suppose they can keep on keepin' on! Haha)
"May contain..." I'm pretty sure is labeling for cross contamination and not actively putting in it the food which is acceptable for most of us vegans.
But im not blaming anyone if they do the best they can... especially when newly vgn n still addicted... but most crap that MIGHT CONTAin usually Shuldn evn eat those craps if it might b contaminated in first place... bad companies packaged plastic preservatives too many ingredients not fresh But in medical nutrition its mostly the animal products and vegan fats sugars even fruits nuts fatty seeds oilsrdumbasfuck ... and cooking also bad idea.. too many fkin humans we live in dumbasfuckplaces foodeserts
Very useful and informative video especially for anyone who is vegan or vegetarian. It's too bad about all the bread containing either eggs or dairy. That vegan plant in the background is a nice touch👌
Were the conbini employees alarmed by the white girl in aisle 4, flipping off the cup noodles!? 🤣 Great video (with special guest expression from Jess), very informative, even for non-vegans. It’s good to know you won’t actually starve and that there’s quite a wide selection available.
Super, super useful! I visit Tokyo frequently (moving semi-soon), go to conbini a lot, and my Japanese reading lags behind my conversational skills...so I struggle identifying vegan-appropriate foods from the labels. I'm spoiled, selection-wise (I live in Portland, Oregon...need I say more?). Thanks so much for this!
Hi I'm a japanese girl and kinda vegan lately🍅 I finally could buy some stuffs at convenient stores cause japanese convenient store's stuffs always includes animal products.. thanx💗
I’m just tying to help but some types of soy sauce like ‘だししょうゆ’ contain bonito=fish & some others contain Kombu kelp for your information. And many of cooked food available at convenience stores contains MSG for those who care.
Ahhhh you’re not wrong! I think I remember reading about that online somewhere, but it’s so annoying because it doesn’t say on the soy sauce bottle if it does or doesn’t contain it. :(
I love FamilyMart, personally. Their green smoothies are the best of the big 3. 7-11 doesn't even have house brand green smoothies. Muji food is incredibly good. Which is funny since as you said, they're known for furniture and homewares. I haven't tried their curries, just their non-vegan butter chicken, and tom yum soup potato chips which are amazing.
With natural disasters popping up all around Japan lately (I know that Tokyo is about 2 1/2 hours away from Osaka by Shinkansen, and even farther away from Sapporo and other parts of Hokkaidō) it’s still good to see your post.👍🏻
Oh my god!! You made me remember all these snacks and appetizers sold in a convenience store over there... How dare you, I nearly cried haha. I'm buying a ticket to Japan
Hi Hannah, Thanks for another video. I noticed this before, but I just thought I wanted to give you some information that's more accurate when you describe mochi. You might already know this, but your favourite 3-coloured dumplings aren't exactly mochi, but they're called 'dango' (だんご or 団子). Because they're three-coloured, they're named 'Sanshoku Dango' (three-coloured dango) or 'Hanami Dango', which were my favourite snacks too when I was a child. The packet of dumplings you picked at 11'15" are also dango called 'Mitarashi Dango' with sweet brown sauce on them. I know that mochi and dango are similar, because both of them are sticky, similar texture, made from rice etc., but they're made in different ways. They use different kinds of rice too (even Wikipedia (English) on dango is giving incorrect information on the flour for it, so don't quote them on that). Sorry to be a pain in the arse, but I thought you'd probably like to know about them correctly, because mochi & dango are your favourite food?
Ahhh yeah I knew the name of them but I always just thought that dango was made from mochi? I guess they are slightly different textures? Hmmm I’d better start calling them dango then hahaha. Thanks for explaining it a little better!
thanks for this. i am planning to visit japan for three months (at least a third in tokyo) and feel like i'm pretty screwed as a vegan once i leave tokyo. at least in europe and the US most vegan items have an easy to spot vegan logo on them!
Another great video... I love them! Living la vida loca ;P (and that middle finger clip too lol) - Would you do a video on the Costco store(s) in Japan? It'll be interesting to see and compare what they have versus what's available in the Costco's on Mexico and the U.S.
I'm a flexitarian but I don't like to eat meat mostly, I only eat it when I really want to. And yeah, I hate seafood, I can't with the smell. so I guess it was a helpful guide for me, next year japan, I'm coming for ya.
Nice video, your new outro music is good 👍. By the way, when did you decide to become a vegan and the reason for it. Thanks for all the videos, loved them.
I tried those soy nuggets! So unusual they even made them when so many restaurants don't even have vegetarian options. I heard a lot of people didn't like them, so I guess that's why they were discontinued.
Yeah I thought it was strange too! Kirk if you can make them for conbini good, surely there could be a menu item somewhere right? I hope they bring them back!
Thanks for the vegan list! It’ll be handy when we visit. I’m excited for the Meiji chocolate. Sounds like it’s worth having a bread machine while living in Japan :)
I know there is a mustard greens/leaves onigiri, but I don't know what all is in it, but maybe you can look up the word and check? Might be able to add one more rice ball to your list.
Hi Hannah :) OK, I think 'butter-oil' = ghee aka clarified butter. Yep, the steamed red-bean paste buns are vegan, they're the same as Chinese 'pau'. Other vegan options would be black bean paste, lotus seed paste. I don't think you'll find sweet coconut ones though; I think that's more a Singapore thing... NO VEGAN BREAD?!? GASP!!!
700th likeer! Im going in January and I cant get excited because im so anxious. Im going with all meat eaters. I hate being difficult im stressed. this has helped alot. Im going to print screenshots of the packets and just stock up.
Hannah, thank you! I am a vegan about to go to Japan for the 26th trip and this may be the easiest foodwise thanks to my notes I just took.Great info! But about the Familymart hash browns and fries: Are you sure they are cooked in vegetable oil? Inany case the same oil the meat is cooked in, right?
7-11 Has an Italian dressing that should be okay, at least out here in Ishikawa... I'm a vegetarian though, so you might want to double check. I can totally commiserate on the sales ending for various snacks... it's hard enough to find things, even worse when something you like goes away, which happens all the time here...
every time I see someone talking about natural lawson i get angry at myself for not living in tokyo 😂 I live in osaka and I don't think they have it here and I'm so curious about the vegan snacks that natural lawson offers...
the allergen warning is common, it really means that dairy is processed in the same facility as the vegan products so there is a possibility of cross contamination, so for legal purposes they are protecting themselves by informing you.
Yes but in other places like Australia or the USA it says "may contain ...." when its processed in the same facility and says "contains ..." when that product is actually an ingredient. In Japan since it only says that it contains the item without any indication of whether its because of an actual ingredient they use or not it makes it tricky finding out whether the food is vegan, is the point she made
Another really informative vlog! thanks so much for making this! Im pretty sure udon and soba are vegan but some ramen noodles MAY contain chicken egg. I'm allergic to whey protein in milk and proteins found in egg whites. It really sucked as a kid. So, My question...Are there any options for NON dairy ice cream in Japan? I really enjoy the options here with Soy milk, almond milk and cashew nut milk ice creams are so delicious. Since I cannot read Japanese this vlog is really helpful!! Thanks again!!
Yeah I think they are vegan which is great but it’s just hard to find the soup stock that doesn’t contain animal products :/ Yeah I know that at the Aeon and OK Mart near me they’ve got Soy Icecream and the Aeon also has almond milk ice cream. Both are delicious!
Thanks so much!! I'm headed there on the 25th. So this vlog really came in handy! Keep up the great work! : ) Oops , one more thing..Sorry but did you mention a good Wifi company to use? I went back to your past vlogs and just couldn't find the info. If you don't mind , can you just mention which vlog it was and I will do the rest!! : )
Is vegan an actual "thing" in Japan? In North America there are a lot of vegan restaurants or menus just for vegans. Has this started to take in Japan as well, or is it up to you to find out what is or isn't on your own before ordering?
It is increasing. More vegan options are popping up in restaurants and supermarkets, theres even a vegan exclusive konbini in asakusa, and ofc shoujin ryouri at the temples, but no it isnt much of a thing yet in Japan.
I know this is an old video, but can anyone tell me if Marumiya Brand Furikake have vegan flavors? I have the Shiso one i think? The purple packaging with a shiso leaf behind the name. I cant get an accurate translation of the ingredients thru google translate but maybe anyone here knows? Thank you
Noice! It seems that i'm now watching your videos hoping to get a laugh… Intro yep, the eye roll when you started on the ingredients thing (also most youtubers have those pixie lights in the background) that time you actually flipped an inanimate object hehehe! (ohh multiple times hope they learned their lesson hehehe) The one thing i found out from my little experience with japan is that they are in a constant flux of changing the foodstuffs and even if they're popular they might still discontinue it. Mmmm looks like cat food but i'll give it a shot if i come across it. Hmmm i wonder if you might know why it's called a "rice ball" but it's shaped like a triangle/pyramid… Anyway hope the storm isn't too bad in tokyo.
What's going on with all the packaging? Japanese foods here in Australia have an outer package, then individual packages for the ingredients, plus plastic things for sauces, and so on. Where does all that plastic end up? A packaging fetish! Great vid BTW.
They are extremely good about recycling and incineration in Japan, if that makes you feel any better. I have not confirmed this with Japanese packaging industries, but Japan is a very humid country, and the excessive packaging may be a significant savings when it comes to preventing food spoilage. But they also do a lot of packaging on non-food things, so I dunno.
Veganism by definition is doing the best you can to minialize harm of animals so you can absolutlety call yourself vegan if you're trying your best but it's just not that easy to get product you need or you can really trust ingredients list. Just throwing it there. Love your chanel
I became a Vegetarian eight years ago and it was a little difficult to find and prepare food for that kind of diet.. Now "Health food aisles" have sprung up everywhere.. I have never felt better.. vegan yet?
It's easier than ever to become vegan, new vegan products come out by the second, it feels like.
I’m so happy that I found this video! I’m vegan and soon going to Japan for a week and this was very helpful.
I'm so happy to see all of these options! Just found out I'm severely allergic to wheat, eggs and milk. I've been heartbroken because I didn't know how I would be able to manage Japan if I ever get the chance to go there. This made that dream of mine come back to life!
if severely allergic i wouldn't recommend these products as may contain

Came for the plant, stayed for the long cheeto
Don’t we all.
Currently Hannah
lol
I dont know how I feel about this joke now.
I bought the vegetable flavour but I used Google translate and it says it is flavoured with pork seasoning??
ごもくしらあえだよ
tofu and salad dressed with white sesame and miso.
it is Japanese traditional food!
Ahhhh that’s how to say it! Thank you!
😊👍
Amazing, thank you so much for the effort.
Muji has two vegan curries, the Chana Masala curry and the Baigan Till Masala curry (Apple Vegetable curry contains honey), as well as many snacks like Oats Sable Chocolate Cookies.
Oh snap! I didn’t see the honey listed! Thank you for informing me!

Oh, hello fellow German watcher :)
Hi there! Have a great day und viele Grüße! 👋
Viele Grüße zurück! Viel Spaß in Japan! Ich mache im November für 8 Tage Urlaub in Tokyo und hab mich daher auch sehr über das Video gefreut :D

a 2024 update would be awesome :)
In their ice cream section at Family Mart they have these little fruit sorbet balls in packages. Do you know if they are vegan?
Very useful and informative video especially for anyone who is vegan or vegetarian. It's too bad about all the bread containing either eggs or dairy. That vegan plant in the background is a nice touch👌
Hahaha don’t you hate non-vegan plants 😂
T’s tan tan 😍 take me back!!
Love this video! Wish u had still frames for the food bc it was hard to screenshot
I wonder if the hash browns and fries from Family Mart is fried in separate oil than their fried meat products (fried chicken, etc).
Were the conbini employees alarmed by the white girl in aisle 4, flipping off the cup noodles!? 🤣 Great video (with special guest expression from Jess), very informative, even for non-vegans. It’s good to know you won’t actually starve and that there’s quite a wide selection available.

What is the name of the vegan ramen place you ate at in Tokyo Station?
T’s Tan Tan :)
You can also order this ramen online at Amazon or Rakuten
They also have a t's restaurant near Jiyugaoka station
@@joy4ki can you guide with a link to order this. I live in Ibaraki Ken. Thanks

Yeah Tokyo missed the majority of the storm which was lucky. Poor Osaka got hit pretty hard though :(
Indeed. I’ve had my NHK app open for a few days watching the news, and it’s been nonstop Hokkaido news yesterday/today... Be safe
Oh my god!! You made me remember all these snacks and appetizers sold in a convenience store over there... How dare you, I nearly cried haha. I'm buying a ticket to Japan

Thanks for explaining it a little better!
love you for making this vid, vegan travel is my favorite! yesssss!!!!
mine too! :)
thanks for this. i am planning to visit japan for three months (at least a third in tokyo) and feel like i'm pretty screwed as a vegan once i leave tokyo. at least in europe and the US most vegan items have an easy to spot vegan logo on them!
Adding the finger to the non vegan products was quite amusing 😄
LOL! Sometimes it does feel like they put animal products in things just to piss us off -- it's so unnecessary!
5:04 I laughed irl
Another great video... I love them! Living la vida loca ;P (and that middle finger clip too lol) - Would you do a video on the Costco store(s) in Japan? It'll be interesting to see and compare what they have versus what's available in the Costco's on Mexico and the U.S.
I'm a flexitarian but I don't like to eat meat mostly, I only eat it when I really want to. And yeah, I hate seafood, I can't with the smell. so I guess it was a helpful guide for me, next year japan, I'm coming for ya.
Thank you so much for this video!! 😊💕

It would be super interesting to hear what the situation is like now, 5 years later. I assume it must have improved?
I think the konbu onigiri at 7/11 actually has dashi mixed into it, but I'm not 100% on that. Thanks so much for this video!
Very very useful, thank you. I can speak some Japanese but I think I would really struggle with ingredients lists haha (Kanji is not my strong point)
Your face impressions smile 😍
Thanks for the vegan list! It’ll be handy when we visit. I’m excited for the Meiji chocolate. Sounds like it’s worth having a bread machine while living in Japan :)
I know there is a mustard greens/leaves onigiri, but I don't know what all is in it, but maybe you can look up the word and check? Might be able to add one more rice ball to your list.
Hi Hannah :)
OK, I think 'butter-oil' = ghee aka clarified butter.
GASP!!!
What is the name of the vegan ramen restaurant? I'm planning a trip to Tokyo and am trying to find places/ things to eat.
Inany case the same oil the meat is cooked in, right?
do you take a pic of the ingredients and the translate app can put it in english?
Hey Hannah!
Thank you so much for this video ^_^
I am allergic to strawberries, what would you recommend when shopping for snacks at a convenience store or just eating out in Japan in general?
the middle finger at the soy cream was great
I don't read Japanese. How will I know what the ingredients are on products?
I agree Lawson is great they got the “Natural Lawson” products. There is another konbini called Sunkus.
Your video saved me, thank you ❤️
7-11 Has an Italian dressing that should be okay, at least out here in Ishikawa...
In Japan since it only says that it contains the item without any indication of whether its because of an actual ingredient they use or not it makes it tricky finding out whether the food is vegan, is the point she made
“You and mochi” soooooo cute
Another really informative vlog! thanks so much for making this! Im pretty sure udon and soba are vegan but some ramen noodles MAY contain chicken egg. I'm allergic to whey protein in milk and proteins found in egg whites. It really sucked as a kid. So, My question...Are there any options for NON dairy ice cream in Japan? I really enjoy the options here with Soy milk, almond milk and cashew nut milk ice creams are so delicious. Since I cannot read Japanese this vlog is really helpful!!
Thanks again!!
Yeah I think they are vegan which is great but it’s just hard to find the soup stock that doesn’t contain animal products :/
Yeah I know that at the Aeon and OK Mart near me they’ve got Soy Icecream and the Aeon also has almond milk ice cream.
It should be in my vlog about things you notice when you first come to japan. :)
Super helpful video!!🤙
I know this is an old video, but can anyone tell me if Marumiya Brand Furikake have vegan flavors? I have the Shiso one i think? The purple packaging with a shiso leaf behind the name. I cant get an accurate translation of the ingredients thru google translate but maybe anyone here knows? Thank you
Thank you so much
I was thinking of visiting or Evan moving to Japan but wasn't sure if its imposible to be vegan in japan
Im in Japan now and honestly I can't tell a real difference between 711,Lawson, family Mart etc
8:26 umaibo sadly is not vegan ;( it can contain milk or meat flavor
Yes, it contains dairy, chicken, pork and gelatin...
I love the ''fuck you'' at the packaging non vegan bars, i feel you ahaha
I sugeest that you turn down volume of introductory video because your intro video sounds a lot louder than main contents part
Thank you for this! ❤
Thanks, that was very helpful!
thank you, this will help a lot!
Thank you! This will be so helpful! (:
wow thank you! that was really helpful
thank you for this video.. I am vegan and I am planning to visit Japan
I'm nor in japan or vegan, but I'm still loving your videos!
Agree completely, Lawson is bae!
Noice!
It seems that i'm now watching your videos hoping to get a laugh…
Intro yep, the eye roll when you started on the ingredients thing (also most youtubers have those pixie lights in the background) that time you actually flipped an inanimate object hehehe! (ohh multiple times hope they learned their lesson hehehe)
The one thing i found out from my little experience with japan is that they are in a constant flux of changing the foodstuffs and even if they're popular they might still discontinue it.
Mmmm looks like cat food but i'll give it a shot if i come across it.
Hmmm i wonder if you might know why it's called a "rice ball" but it's shaped like a triangle/pyramid…
Anyway hope the storm isn't too bad in tokyo.
What's going on with all the packaging? Japanese foods here in Australia have an outer package, then individual packages for the ingredients, plus plastic things for sauces, and so on. Where does all that plastic end up? A packaging fetish! Great vid BTW.
Graeme Gerrard they are religious about recycling there i think, its not perfect but it’s probably not as damaging as it would be in other countries.
Thanks for sharing this video 😆
Veganism by definition is doing the best you can to minialize harm of animals so you can absolutlety call yourself vegan if you're trying your best but it's just not that easy to get product you need or you can really trust ingredients list. Just throwing it there.
Love your chanel
Thank you for the video ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
