I have no trouble eating anywhere besides specialized restaurant (ramen/monja/hot pot restaurant etc. Are difficult but you’d be surprise I eat quite well at yakiniku places!) also Tokyo is getting more and more friendly with at least vegetarians, we even finally have vegan menus at Tokyo Disney resort! But anyways if I had the time I would make a blog about living in Tokyo as a vegan but it’s kind of difficult at the time. Why would we have the digestive system of a cow? and not a frugivore (great ape) as we do. Our closest relatives being the Bonbo have much larger, sharper and stronger teeth than humans but still eat a diet of 99% plants.
Actualy, hippos and gorrilas do eat meat. It is a misconseption that they do not because of the 'mostly herbevorous' tag that they have. But they do eat meat.
Finding food requires a lot of reading - vegans are used to it - but if you're not good at reading Japanese this is one of the biggest challenges. One advantage of the writing system is, that you can quickly scan for components like 魚 豚 鳥 牛 卵 脂 in a kanji or word to see if it's probably vegan or not - and ゼラチン. You don't have to know every kind of vocabulary to make an educated guess. Not having a kitchen is hard. If I'm on the road I usually get onigiri or sushi with natto, kimchi (these two can contain dashi), inari, daikon, konbu or seasonal vegetable. They also often have soba with vegetables in the fridge. There are also some very nice vegan (-friendly) restaurants, but you certainly have to look them up beforehand. If I go out spontaneously with my Japanese friends we usually go to kaiten sushi because I can always get something there, and I never get sick of sushi. But you can also find some tofu or tempura places that work well. As you said, if you have somewhere to cook - even in a hostel kitchen - and a supermarket there are lots of things you can prepare. Many products have a vegan version (furikake, natto, kimchi, pickles, bread, icecream, crackers, crisps, ready made ramen toppings, instant ramen) and there are obvious choices like soba, udon, tofu, konnyaku, mochi and so many flavours of soy milk. I really recommend to get instant konbudashi (seewedstock) - also useful when you visit someone to cook with.
Go Karting to an ancient temple in a cave, the ultimate experience! This video is just getting me more psyched for my own adventure to hopefully begin next year as a JET, can't wait to visit this place, added it to the list!
Yes finallllyyyyyy! I'm so grateful for this video! I was slowly worrying I would never be able to visit japan at the rate I was seeing all the meat vids. Thank you
it's about time boys! well done! we visit Tokyo every year and eat predominantly in 100% vegan resturaunts...and the things they do in Japan with tofu/seitan/soyameat...the western world really needs to catch up with! if you go on happycow.com it lists all the veggie or vrgan places wherever you travel all over the world..there are countless options in tokyo..granted its a giant place..but dayummmmn i miss Ripple burgers every god damned day.. I implore you to go next time you are near Shinjuku

How can it be legal to drive a go kart with no helmet on a public road in Japan of all places?
@@stormyaudio9969 if people were more responsible, it would be legal to drink in public. Since people in north america act like jack asses far too much, we can't.
Hey Chris! I really enjoyed and appreciated this video. I love watching your videos, in general. (And to be honest, I've watched them all!) Thank you for showing such respect to the practices and beliefs of vegetarians and vegans, even though you don't adopt those beliefs yourself. It says a lot about your character. I look forward to more videos from you!
Hell yeah, Chris. I got hyped when I saw the title. I'm a vegan and I've always loved your videos, thanks for being open minded and willing to try new things!
Chris riding a Go Kart down the street with a deadpan expression while upbeat music plays has to be my new favorite thing I’ve seen on this channel. 😂🤣 Also “Crispy Whacked” is a Natsuki-level genius catchphrase. 👌
Thanks so much for the video, Chris! I know the trolls come out in full force when anyone mentions vegan on the internet so I really appreciate the effort. I've been wanting to go to Japan but have been reluctant because of the ubiquitous fish in everything.
Wow, the comments section is pretty hilarious. I'm just like why are people getting so offended over what someone else eats, if you wanna eat meat, eat it same for the vegetarians. Besides, vegan food looks pretty good so I don't know what y'all be complaining about.
Some people are just childish trolls or people who had a coworker turn down their potluck contribution because they were vegan which they somehow rolled up their mind into getting lectured.
Thank you finally ahhhhh, I cant stand to watch the recent vids about meats n that so I skip em. I can acualy watch some content from your channel now WOOO. Thanks so much

I am very glad that you made a video featuring vegan food. I use to watch videos from your channel ever now and then, and I've always wandered what Japan has to offer in terms of vegan food. Great video!
Considering how healthy the traditional Japanese diet is and that Japan has one of the longest life expectancies a mix of meat and vegetables is the best choice I assume.
Yeah, veganism and vegetarianism are pretty much just social trends, or personality accessories, anyway. The only reason for their being is because some people are extremely sensitive to the reality of organisms consuming other organisms and how it can be a bit harsh to witness when you've never witnessed it before. That and it can make you appear virtuous and noble when you wear them as titles or badges of honor to be displayed to others. I mean, it's a free world and people can do as they please, I don't care. But, a balanced diet of meats, vegetables, and some kind of clean carbohydrate(whether a starch or other vegetables that contain lots of it) is pretty much the gold standard. *shrugs*
I'm vegetarian and I enjoy any kind of videos you make really. Despite not eating meat its still interesting to see what people DO eat regardless of my own beliefs. I'm going to Japan next summer and I'm slightly worried about accidentally eating meat or fish so I've gotta teach myself some phrases before I go lol
I have to steer clear of seafood because I'm allergic so this video was extremely helpful when I visited Tokyo! I had no idea there was still parts of fish even in things like the broth of noodles. So this helped me out greatly
Why I love watching your videos is you find humor in the most basic things and I laugh multiple times watching your videos no matter the topic of the video. Love your vids. keep it up. I want to go to Japan someday. Crispy Whacked :P Love the go-karts!! not allowed to do that in Canada.
Hey man, I'm vegan and my girlfriend's vegetarian and I was wondering if you could some day do a guide on eating vegan during a trip to Japan? Thanks ♥️
@@brewbrewbrewthedeck4138 yes that's exactly what people want to do when they are on vacation to a different country (in case you cant tell that's sarcasm)

The best kind of vegan food is the kind you don’t even realize is vegan until you look for the meat. Tofu and other such meat substitutes have ruined vegan food in America, but I’m glad that it’s still good over there.
I used the Happy Cow app when I travelled in Japan, and found so much amazing vegan food! The Shojin Ryori at the Buddhist temples was definitely the best, but there are also lots of great macrobiotic restaurants.
Extremely difficult? Maybe if you're someone with zero cooking skills, utterly incapable of supporting yourself and 100% reliant on eating processed food from supermarkets or restaurants. Virtually any vegan dish you can make elsewhere you can also make in Japan. In short: Just don't be lazy and you'll be fine.
I'm surprised nobody has made a series yet driving from Hokkaido to Kyushu on a Go Kart. Perhaps I can be the first and then write a book about it.
Do it >:D

Thank you so much for making this!!! I'm vegan and was surprised to see you post this haha
Yeassss! So glad this finally came out :3 wasn't expecting it but I've been watching for a few years now and its exciting to see- thank you Chris!
Leave it to Japan to make good vegan food. Living in China made me 100% I could never be vegan for more than a day. Great video!
laowhy86 from china with love did it and she was raw
You should do a collab with Chris next time you're in Japan C-Milk
Nice to see ya' around, C-Milk!
Hey C-milk!
Best China youtuber on best Japanese gaijin youtuber's video :D
Never say never.
Go Karting to an ancient temple in a cave, the ultimate experience! This video is just getting me more psyched for my own adventure to hopefully begin next year as a JET, can't wait to visit this place, added it to the list!
Yay, finally! Thank you
Yes finallllyyyyyy!
I implore you to go next time you are near Shinjuku
ehh i mean a balance is fine
@@maxfelson9467 "if I eat the equivalent of smoking 200 cigarettes after I eat my vegetables and fruits, then that's balance".
Come on bro
Yeah for this video Chris! Did ya'll enjoy the food? I'm a Vegan & I bet you have a lot more Vegan & Vegetarian fans than you even think! I love how open ya'll were to the Vegan food. Love your channel!
Is Ryotaru and Natsuki a 'Nutty Professor' type situation, where we only ever see one but never the other? o:
Nice video this helps me a lot I just had surgery and I'm in pain but your channel is fun to watch and helps me forget about the pain for a while thanks and keep up the great work
I'm vegan and this looks delicious af.
This is because the foods aren't trying to impersonate meat
I love your videos Chris and want to thank you for doing Vegan/Vegetarian meal video. As a vegetarian myself I've noticed over the years it is hard to find restaurants that feature descent Vegetarian meals. So its nice to see my fav Vlogger doing a Veggie menu video. :o)
How can it be legal to drive a go kart with no helmet on a public road in Japan of all places?
It’s also legal to drink alcohol outside in japan🧐
Kaylina Burch what’s wrong with that?
@@kb_analytics drinking alcohol in public should be legal anyways
Action Park's spirit lives on
@@stormyaudio9969 if people were more responsible, it would be legal to drink in public.
“Stimulate our 5 senses”
Me: How it feels like to chew 5 gum
Goro Akechi lol exactly what I was thinking
Yay finally, thanks for making this and including your veggie viewers :)
You don't know how long I waited for this video
Hell yeah, Chris. I got hyped when I saw the title. I'm a vegan and I've always loved your videos, thanks for being open minded and willing to try new things!
I am so happy to see this, I’ve just gone Vegan last week and I’m worried about to Japan again and not knowing what I am eating.
tabi eats had a video about it in among their list. Plus they are just really sweet guys anyways. Satoshi and Shinichi are awesome:)
I've recently turned Vegan too :)
Chris riding a Go Kart down the street with a deadpan expression while upbeat music plays has to be my new favorite thing I’ve seen on this channel. 😂🤣
Also “Crispy Whacked” is a Natsuki-level genius catchphrase. 👌
crispy whacked.. I'm smelling a new shirt. I'd buy it
Chris has definitely mastered self-deprecating humor.
Yess I’m trying to become vegan and I’m so happy you posted this. Thank you!!!
Thanks so much
"make your butler go away" that's what I heard too lmao
Exactly the issue that I need getting solved
Chris doesn't have the skills to be a butler..... more of a general lackey for Ryotoro....
Abroad in Japan's videos are like a magic, comepaired to every other video around the 11 minut mark. since i enjoy them, they just vanish so very quickly,
Chris, please i hope for you to keep making content, you have such a nice relax, and awesome view, when it comes on the topic of making videos, its funny, there is the things, one expect from a video like this, and your own personal channels touch, with the different sound files and music, its so refreshing to watch, and i always look forward for more of your content,
have a good one and keep being awesome, and motivating, many positive vibes, from a huge fan, from denmark !
Thanks for trying vegan food! :)
I am very glad that you made a video featuring vegan food. I use to watch videos from your channel ever now and then, and I've always wandered what Japan has to offer in terms of vegan food.
Great video!
Considering how healthy the traditional Japanese diet is and that Japan has one of the longest life expectancies a mix of meat and vegetables is the best choice I assume.
besides veggies it's all about fish and small portions, everything has fish, even meatstuffs have fish, mostly as broth
Fish+small portions+fermented food+sugar treats being expensive.
*shrugs*
yo brethren lol calm down
@@iyariximenauribe6797 truth stings, eh? Haha
7:35 just marveling at Ryotoro's velcro shoes. He's frickin adorable.
Was interesting to hear Ryotoro talk about the native people of Japan. Hope to see a video about the Ainu on this channel.
now THAT's the real way to explore japan, riding a gokart!
I have to steer clear of seafood because I'm allergic so this video was extremely helpful when I visited Tokyo! I had no idea there was still parts of fish even in things like the broth of noodles. So this helped me out greatly
Ryotaro using religion to kill Chris now. He is truly nefarious. Keep on plotting, Ryotaro! You'll get him... somehow...
And thank you for all the tips 🌿😊🙏
I love Ryotaro! He is like the Japanese George Clooney lol.
Thanks ♥️
Just cook for yourself, yeesh.
Best would be to go to a big city like Tokyo and look up good restaurants at HappyCow
@@brewbrewbrewthedeck4138 yes that's exactly what people want to do when they are on vacation to a different country (in case you cant tell that's sarcasm)
Duuude you were in Yt rewind 2017. Never expected seeing you in there but I love it
Those damn things pass in front of my house several times everrry single day, full of foreigners dressed as mario kart characters, screeching and whooing.
please don't turn into that abomination. I wish they'd ban them.
otherwise, very nice video. man, those karts get on my nerves though
Yeah I see them every time I walk around Tokyo these days.
i count my lucky stars that i'm in the hokkaido countryside away from all those shenanigans sometimes...
I remember seeing a group of them passing in front of the station at Fukushima. The locals' bewildered expressions were priceless.
But... but shenanigans are the best!
Throw a blue shell at them.
No ads hope it’s not demonetized. Love your videos
OMG ive been watching your vids and FINALLYYYYYYYYYYY a vegan video im ugly crying right now
The production quality though! Amazing presentation and editing!!
The best kind of vegan food is the kind you don’t even realize is vegan until you look for the meat. Tofu and other such meat substitutes have ruined vegan food in America, but I’m glad that it’s still good over there.
As usual great video, Chris! As a vegan myself this video was awesome! Thanks man, looking forward to your next upload
can we get a eurobeat Initial D inspired montage of Chris driving that go kart?
I used the Happy Cow app when I travelled in Japan, and found so much amazing vegan food! The Shojin Ryori at the Buddhist temples was definitely the best, but there are also lots of great macrobiotic restaurants.
Chris mate, you look proper old in the intro
Your videos are produced to such a high quality, thanks for the amazing content!!
Very cool. I've always heard it's extremely difficult to find vegan food in Japan. You can make it work anywhere you go I think :)
BrewBrewBrewTheDeck Woh way to go to be rude
Sometimes you just wanna eat out even as a vegan, especially if youre just visiting lol
10:00 I just love that cut, it had a comedic effect on me
