As an architectural student, I REALLY like the approach you and the architects took. It is still very fonctionnal like the modern japanese housing yet it keeps the beauty, the scenographic journey in which you discover as a visitor or the owner. @Karen Hodgens Not every house is a stonks game. Some people just want a house that works for them and their family and enjoy living in it because it's for them. Even houses in the US have slab leaks and other problems that just come with the responsibility of home-ownership.
As an architect I can say, those are some of best detailed window I ever seen in my career.
I swear, Japanese contracors are the best, everything you see is so clean and no mess is left behind after the job is done (Paint, cement, gypsum, etc.), even if the work is so simple, yet their craftsmanship is sublime.
I'm living for this era of "I moved to Japan" "I built my dream house in Japan" "I'm chasing my dream in Japan" videos
I had to leave Japan during Covid and now all these RUclipsrs are moving and living their dreams there :(
I feel like Roger who found the One Piece too early lol
Instantly requires a how-to on affording this dream too!
You have to keep in mind that living in Japan, like all countries, has its ups and downs. RUclipsrs only tend to show the positive side of living here. The reality can be less glamorous. Not wanting to sound too negative but remember to keep a balanced perspective on the idea of living in Japan.
@@MSJChem That's what I love about Dogen and Norm, they are open to pointing out Japan as a real place and not as some idealistic utopia. But there are realistically some people in the world that, upon moving to a different country, do find that life-change to be a net-positive for them. Of course not everyone or every country are a match for each other.
@@MSJChem Yes I agree but I know, I was there. But personally the goods far outweighted the bads, especially when compared to where I am now.

I love the privacy of the courtyard in the middle! Houses being like a foot away from each other is what I don’t like about the houses in Japan, but you managed to create your own space and it’s so beautiful too
Hey Dogen, I am studying architecture in Germany, and one complicated question we always face is, how to insulate the building walls depending on their thickness and material. In your case, the kitchen wall to the inner garden has two layers of paper walls and two layers of windows. Extend these outside, and two spaces within the wall appear. What did the architect do to avoid energy (heath) loss at this particular wall? Especially when it's cold outside, moisture can appear at these places if not insulated properly. Can you tell us about the walls structure and maybe how the architect solves this problem?
It's a technical question, yeah. Heh.
I would be interested in this as well!!
I am very interested in this.
Hi, I graduated architecture school and currently work as a designer.
edit: looking at the video more closely, i think there's a 'wall' in between the screen doors and the glass doors and that's probably where they're mitigating that energy loss. It also seems to be the case when they do the courtyard shot and you can see the door wall protrudes from the exterior wall to fit the glass doors inside of it. The wall itself is unusually thick for these reasons (you can see at 10:29) .
To answer your question: it's likely just a point of energy loss (as is with any sorts of large windows and openings). The wall is likely not insulated and is just covered with some layers of finish and sheathing. Pocket doors are usually used on interior walls for this reason (and many others including sound, build, hardware, etc.). A pocket door is more like the width of two doors, with the second 'door' opening covered under the finish wall. Moisture shouldn't be a problem if the building is properly sealed with WRB and SAF at the pocket. The inside pocket is likely also entirely finished and sealed with any rails that the doors need to slide in and out of. So if the contractor and architect has done their work properly, there should be no moisture penetrating through these openings. (if you're further interested in this you can google 'pocket door section/detail')
I had a seminar about that (also from Germany): basically japanese architecture always counts for some points to just lose a lot of heating energy.
In this case the idea behind the big window in the kitchen, is that cooking itself is going to generate a lot of heat and that's why you won't have to care too much about that, especially because the kitchen (in contrary to what a lot of german houses have) is just the kitchen, without any other centralized room inside (like for example a living room directly attached to it), so you're not gonna stay there for a lot of time anyway.
What actually feels really foreign to me, is the fact that they don't have specific wardrobes in their room and also the living room kinda doesn't exist (as an European I could never imagine that).
@@A_d_e_k The living room does exist, it is just attached to the kitchen. Thats not uncommon in Europe either.
ビフォーアフターで観るようなお洒落な家だなぁ。いつかこういう感じの家建てたい。
I love 3 men talking about the fact you don't need a closet in your room. :D :D :D :D
the word "hyperfunctional" just gained new meanings for me. this house is balanced perfectly and thoughtfully in all grounds, every milimeter cubic space is used in the most functional sense and it's elegant, it doesn't have anything unnecessary and it doesn't lack a critical part. compared to that, the suburb concrete jungle most people live in here seems wasteful in all accounts but the population density.
Your soliloquy was exceptional.
This house has a "Lofi"-Vibe. It feels incredibly calm.
これは日本人でも羨ましい素敵な家だわ…🥹

As an architectural designer this has to bring the biggest smile to the person who designed the home. To have the client (in this case Dogen) talk so highly of the house and be happy with it has to be the most gratifing feeling ever. Honestly an amazing home, just by looking at it you can tell it has a warm cozy feeling and so functional. Hope you enjoy it for many many years Dogen.

和風建築の意匠は残したまま現代の利便性をちゃんと確保しているのマジで理想的な家ですね
i like the architecture, but damn the place seems so small with the rooms all being small as well. The only time it feels big and open is when you are in the kitchen/living room with the doors open to the courtyard. Maybe It's because I'm American and most of our houses are built to be more open with bigger rooms whereas Japanese houses aren't. If you kept the same architecture but made everything about 2x bigger, then the house would be perfect.
I think it perfectly frames the minimalism. I have a huge apartment too but it's filled with so much clutter that it distracts from the important stuff. I am not messy by any means but humans tend to put stuff into corners that are empty. I like the simplicity the house is able to give off. Especially when you're a creative you seem to be more inspired by clean, less cluttered areas than anything else (atleast for me as a video editor).
Wow this house is so coo- Wait you’re *THAT* Dogen!? Dude my ankles and front tucks aren’t total shit exclusively because of Dogentricks! "This video is unavailable on this device" what? Never seen that before
huh, seems to work today!
The finish of the courtyard walls is reminiscent of a traditional charred-wood technique that prevents rot and insect damage. I saw a carpenter in Kentucky who used Japanese and Korean construction methods to build his own homestead, and the idea stuck with me. Simply lovely. Congrats!
Yakisugi is the name, right? And you're referring to Mr. Chickadee in Kentucky..
I also noticed. So do you get black when you lean on it or touch unintentionally while watering the plants or so?
Does this man love his children?! Lol that guest bedroom was larger than their SHARED room... couldn't imagine building my own home but still making the kids share... especially if I have the room to make a guest room...
Just saying I wouldn't talk to my father after that for months I'd have been so pissed off and upset..I'd have felt like an afterthought.
Workmanship on this place is next level! Such quality of finish...it's impeccable!
Also the shared closet.
I grew up in a 4 person 3 bathroom household and long morning bathroom waiting times were a daily occurrence. The kids will have traffic jam in the morning and having to get your clothes two times a day seems so annoying, because they will 100% want to change in their room
@@Moeeppi oh Yuh I forgot to mention that.. can't believe they thought that wouldn't be awkward lol
My partner also mentioned she found it impossible to study at home without being away from everyone and all distraction to focus and thought the shared hallway study space seemed like a really unproductive space.. everyone is different though and it did look stunning if nothing else.
@@micabryant4513 I definitely agree, the hallway studying space feels more like a study room at a dorm to me and those were always terrible to study in ://
i was thinking the same, but i imagine his children are very young so that room is suitable tbh. When they get older, they could arrange it so that the parents have the ‘guest room’ and one of the daughters live in the parents current bedroom, leaving the originally shared room to the other daughter alone if that makes sense.
I always find it interesting to see English speakers who have been living in Japan for a long time, because they speak English with Japanese style.
Dogen, this house is amazing, it's beautiful and I'm so bloody jealous
But...
Your daughters are going to hate you when they're older for the lack of privacy!
When they're older, they can turn the one bedroom into two - I don't really get the lack of privacy?
With how the rooms are closed off, it won't be sound proof at all. For teenagers that's kinda important. Also not having your own closet to keep private items or being able to make sure you sister doesn't use your clothing unasked is also gonna bring a bit of friction.
their space is also quite small. There's more space for the guest than the daughters together
@@canwejustnot yep. And the guests have an entire en suite which won't be used often

It's finally back to working!
I've never really thought about my own dream house before watching this video. I mean I come from a middle class background as it is but it used to be that every dream house I saw before was just so focused on the money and shine and lavishness that it completely pushed me away. "What's the most expensive thing we put here?", "What's the thing here that would take the cool factor to eleven?" - None of these things felt like home to me. But this video is different. It's so well thought out that I could feel the soul and philosophy of the owner and the designer at every inch of the house, even through a screen. All those windows that I first thought were weirdly sized and placed all click into place once you consider yourself "in the moment" as then they would greatly enhance the experience of being there. Dogen's video has finally got me thinking about a house of my own. Every place he showed like the family closet, I could see why he made it that way and how our different ways of thinking would shape the place. It's such an incredible feeling and so inspirational that I've never felt it before. Thank you, Dogen. You and your family deserve all the happiness in the world.
Congratulations!!! Beautiful home
So happy for you! Congratulation!!!
Great house on every single aspect. One thing though that I found "weird". As a teenager, I would not feel comfortable living at a room like your daughters. 1) It's small. 2) They need privacy. It sorta feels like you are pulling them out of their rooms. They cant sit anywhere by themselves. It wouldn't seem weird to me if one of them relocates upstairs in the future.
Yes, thought the exact same thing. It’s FAR too small. The wall is too thin, and the hallway/desk area lacks privacy. The desk area and even the bedrooms overlook the kitchen. That’s a bad design, unless they incorporate curtains.
@@sasham6960 Good point! I think functionality has been prioritized there over privacy. Kids grow up, and they'll want to be able to study or use computers in private. A desk in one of the rooms once a wall has been put up will make it incredibly claustrophobic I'd imagine.
it seems like the children are very young though in which case it would make sense, but i agree that when they become teenagers they should have a large separate room.
IMO the parents should move upstairs into the guest room, so one daughter gets the room the parents are currently staying in, and the other stays in the room they were originally sharing

Access points are placed where the rssi gets too low to make add an additional wifi signal provider with the same ssid
Will talk about this!
I do Network Administration and that was my first thought as well.
本当に日本に住んでいらっしゃるとは思いませんでした。
本当に素晴らしい家ですね。
Congrats! Beautiful home.
When, I was a preteen in the late 80s I met my first Japanese friend. 30 plus years later and 2 trips to Japan among work, life, kids and family, and we remain friends. I always dreamed of a life in Japan, but the stars aligned differently for me. This house is amazing. Somehow you built the house that lived in my dreams. Congratulations. I’m older but feel young and I want to be just like you when I grow up. :)
The narrow hallways and low ceilings irk me as a tall person but I get it’s a Japanese thingy. It looks beautiful and well thought out in many ways 😊
Great house dude, well done! I really love the burnt wood exterior as well, so pretty!
Dunno if lack of personal closets will be a good thing for your kids growing up but I guess you’ll figure that out when it comes 😅
Yeah I think they'd hate it when they're in their teens.
I'd feel very claustrophobic in a lot of those rooms with the ceiling right overhead, speaking as a fellow Tall Person.
I felt the same thing. The kitchen ceiling was especially low and the rooms were a bit cramped. I’m guessing as the only tall person in the family he made a bit of a compromise in that aspect.
Agree with your comments; small rooms and narrow hallways, but also some v nice design features like the genkan and genkan closet, as well as the bathroom.
This house is so tastefully designed. Congratulations Dogen & the architecture team!
Congratulations to you and the family! Love the design and flow of the home!
it's the best house tour i have ever watched. idk but it has such a calming sense to it and it also looks realistic (what i mean is it has this feeling of being buildable because some of the houses that u see in tours are so expensive-looking that u can't imagine building such a house yourself). get's 10/10 from me!! 👍👍👍
There is such a calm and relaxing feeling throughout your house. And it seems like the architect has designed in everything you need for a minimalist lifestyle. I love that the house is essentially designed around the courtyard providing access to nature and natural light.
One thing that intrigues me, is the family closet. Is that working for you, now you have moved in? Surely there are times when more than one of you needs to be in there.
Amazing! Such a beautiful home
Super nice house! It’s cool to see Tokyo Lens and Ohara in the video too!
