It looks like the throwing mechanics have been fixed with the most recent update! (Version 0.319.0)
One hundred percent confirmed. I’ve had so many moments where the Pokemon will jump or attack 4-5 times right as the circle gets to excellent range. Absolutely rage inducing.
I raided Landorus for candy, and it was a nightmare to catch. I've never lost so many Legendaries during raids before. It SUCKED. As for the ramped-up aggression, I'm seeing that, too.
I had the debt problem
been a while, but i remember pausing a bike ride with family to raid and catch it. sat there for what seemed like forever, landorus seemed impossible to catch.
I hope this is a bug that gets fixed, and not something that stays. Found myself having to “flick” the ball a bit harder to achieve get good throws, and concentrate a bit more. Usually higher difficulty in games is fine, but for PoGo where you’re walking, I feel like this might end up also being a safety concern. Can’t even throw one handed well anymore
That’s exactly it!! I have to actually let my finger slide off the side of my phone with force to hit excellents now! And where I live there’s loads of foot trafic.
They 100% did this on purpose. Now they wait for the backlash, to see if they can get away with it.
niantic do not give a crap about backlash it goes against there "pillers" is what it is called, community love is something niantic do not care about because its something they cant map for
More aggressive pokemon + fucked up hit boxes + less balls & berries from stops = more shop purchases
Ok, thank you! I thought I was losing my mind! I can't speak for raids, but wild pokemon have definitely been modified in my opinion.

Catching has definitely gotten trickier for me. Something else I've noticed, that may or may not be a thing, is that my buddy pokemon seems to be helping less on pokeball knockbacks, too
THIS! I noticed the same thing too!....they'll assist with the bounce back but it's almost never a great or excellent; just a regular bounce back.

100% things have definitely changed……been driving me up a wall. More pokemon even been breaking out of normal pokeballs more frequently

Iv been saying this and my community thought I was nuts. I knew there was something different. I really noticed the Pokemon being more aggressive.
I was getting really pissed that I kept losing out on candy for landorus and this is probably why. REALLY NIANTIC
I thought I was going crazy.
As someone with over 50% Excellent throw ratio (pre-update), I could tell right away that the throw mechanics had been "adjusted".
I thought I was the just that off lately - I'm a 75-85ish% excellent thrower & hot damn I was getting frustrated.
I’m level 50, haven’t had issues with excellent throws in the past and just like you’re saying, I thought I just was falling off or something. Past few days my excellent rate has severely dropped off. Glad to hear others are experiencing the same thing.
I did have a couple throws that hit the circle for an excellent and it didn't register. Also seemed like half of the pokeball went through the pokemon before the catch even registered.
it has changed for sure. with crawbrawler i felt the balls go through the mon actually.
I noticed the same thing too, the poke ball would end up behind the claw.
The amount of xp I lost due to this update is very upsetting
I think that's the point, you lose out on xp, so many balls lost, all with incentive of you buying more items. It's extremely frustrating.

I'm glad you covered this. I noticed pokemon jump like crazy when you release. Yet are calm when you hold your throw.
Also, I'm pretty sure they been messing with it almost every update for the past couple month. The last one was just very noticeable.
Oh, they do. Every update always butchers other part of the gameplay somehow. My friend still cannot use Incense. Nothing spawns. But he already reported it a few timed and got ignored.
Unless it's a bug that benefits players, Niantic won't even care.
I recently got sick and went to the ER. This was just as this new patch dropped. Since updating and recovering, I have had the hardest time hitting excellent throws. I told my daughter that this feels off. Something is crazy. I was really considering maybe I'd lost my mind. With this info it makes perfect sense!

yup!! i did a landorus raid and it was a 98% but i couldnt hit 1 excellent throw and i noticed a couple of the things you mentioned. not registering and landorus further back. but i just figured i was having a bad day aswell haha
I did think it was odd that i was struggling with Crabrawler lately... never had that issue in the past!

Everytime niantic does something stupid i think of john hanke sitting in front of the enraged 1st go fest mob yelling at him to fix the game..i remember his face and i know in that moment he decided to ruin the game for everyone

I noticed something weird when Lickitung were currently spawning. The ball kept bouncing off it's face. I not the type to think to myself "the game changed!" But it's nice to feel validated.
I figured something was up when I hit Marill with a full "nice" circle and it rolls down the front of it's body and still isn't a ranked shot.
I’ve also noticed a substantial increase in the number of throws that either don’t register as nice, great, or excellent when the are clearly in the circle, but the number of bounce backs when the balls should catch has greatly increased as well. 👎 Niantic
yeah trying to catch landorus felt super inconsistent on whether or not i hit the excellent throw even though i felt like i was making the same throw each time.
and it definitely felt like aggression has been tweaked. glad its not just me feeling that.
I have definitely experienced this in my wild 'mon encounters. Hyper aggressive jumps/attacks and balls whiffing the circle. Crabrawler was really bad. My throws would appear to fall behind his hands and whiff.
Def noticed both of those changes, it makes catching zubats a nightmare these days..
You are absolutely right. I am not the best thrower around and now it is sometimes just plain frustrating. When I get frustrated I just close the app and do something else. Problem solved.
I was never great at excellent throws anyway, but now they feel damn near impossible. I’ve also seen that behaviour where what seem like perfectly accurate throws register nothing. Same with the level of Pokemon agression too.
I've had the same issue of not getting excellents. Aggression doesn't seem to have changed much from what I've seen but I feel like pokemon run more often, one species in particular has always instantly ran if I throw a normal pokeball at it, even with an excellent throw it still runs after the first catch attempt.
Definitely changed it, never missed an onyx excellent for months.

Would explain why I found myself shouting muttered obscenities at every chinchou I tried to catch yesterday. Either that hit box seemed about 20% smaller than the circle radius would indicate, or the pokemon was further back/forwards than it should be. I kept missing and missing throws that felt should have landed. Same with Slowpokes, which are usually certain excellent throws. I thought it was because I wasn't wearing my glasses XD. As for the attacks, I did notice one Yveltal today (the one that got away) would go on successive attacks. And I'm not talking about back to back attacks. I'm talking 4-5 consecutive attacks. Even some where the attack seemed to coincide with me releasing the pokeball. So definitely something is off here. Niantic wants to make us all look like Ash in Episode 1 of Indigo League. XD
I found the same situation last were happening to me, and while I’m not a stellar player, I also noticed several Pokemon are not only set further back than the norm, but they are much more aggressive making it almost impossible to get excellent throws. I hope they fix this bug soon.
Used to be able to hit every other ball as an excellent using the mystery box…. Only hit 2 last night
So you're telling me that I actually got all those excellent throws if they didn't change this? My muscle memory got so adjusted that I thought maybe I was bad but no they changed it.

Thank God, I knew Niantic changed something as damn I’m fairly good at getting greats and excellence and when the recent 3x stardust boost it was wonky and I’m like there’s no way I declined that badly in throwing the pokeballs

im a new player barely been playing for a week, i can say ive noticed all of this, and its been especially frustrating cause ive been trying my damndist to save pokeballs and get better at throwing.
I thought it was me. I felt like I regressed with excellent catches from 7 out of 10 to maybe 1 again. I didn't know that there was an agression level, but noticed that a lot of the pokemon behavior like the shadow pokemon.

Yes dealt with all of this today during a daily I did during my lunch break. It was highly annoying since it's been so hot here and I haven't got to daily for over a week. Not getting excellents on multiple slowpokes was appalling. Im practically able to excellent those with my eyes closed. Well used to be able too
I've noticed it as well I could tell the moment I saw onix who's great and excellent throws are almost a guarantee and I somehow couldn't hit anything except nice throws
There were a lot of posts in the PoGo group I'm in on Facebook with people asking "did they change the catch mechanics? I can't get nearly as many great or excellent throws" (this was prior to the confirmation). Of course, you always have those jerks that would rather just ridicule the person on their "lack of skills", but I kept thinking "there's no way this many people, including myself, are just suddenly having more difficulty getting these throws." It's driving me insane. I never realized how much my throws were calculated by muscle memory and to be flicking them the way I always have and them not land where they are supposed to is aggravating. I've been using a lot more poke balls than normal.

I think I was in the AB testing for this "feature".
3 years ago when I stopped playing, I was able to fein a throw and the pokemon would jump or attack, and the I threw the ball, hitting exactly on the excellent.
Now they don't fall for it anymore, they'll jump or attack only after the ball was released, waiting mea blue or yellow ball.
Also it got worse the closer I tried to hit excellents. Waiting for them to attack or jump was useless, they only attack or jump after the ball is released, and will get quieter only after the 1st and 2nd ball were wasted.
It got so bad I decided to just use the red balls, as the blue and yellow ones were going like water.
Also also, for some reason, every pokemon I eventually hit on the first try, would break every yellow ball, and almost every blue ball, but not so much with the red ones. There were times I'd just throw any way 2 red balls before the third one, as every pokemon would break the first two balls,and use pinaps only after the 2nd throw, as my balls and pinaps were being wasted.
Same exact thing in community days, except that mons usually didn't break as many balls, but would definitely jump or attack upon throwing the first ball. It got so bad I just gave up trying to catch them normally and resorted to just using my modded plus+ with the yellow balls. I remember I usually got around 400 mons in the past every community day, it got so bad with wasting time that I got as low as 280, and then I gave up trying and got with just the plus+, and it got me back to 400.
I was under the impression it was the new normal, but looks like it was not!
I can say this video is correct. I stopped playing in 2017 & just restarted, I had no problem catching Pokemon for 4 days until yesterday. Wtf
I thought I had completely lost my touch. So glad to see this video and the Reddit conversation. It does seem like between this and the AR changes, that they are trying to minimize grinding efficiency.
This video is spot on!. I noticed this too as I was definitely hitting excellent throws but it wasn't registering. For me it was easier getting excellent throws on snorlax and slowpoke and I got my master ball :)
I definitely noticed this. The throw mechanics needs to be fixed. The pokemons new aggression is something that I actually like. It's become more of a challenge trying to catch something that doesn't want to be caught.
just came back to the game as a level 30 after years not playing and this is kicking my ass. i,ve been trying to get just 10 excellent throws to evolve farfatched and its taking a week to get just three excellent throws
I’ve had double takes in the past week where I’ve had great throws and excellent throws that hit well inside the circle and I get no bonuses. Glad it’s not just me coping and something others have noticed.
There was a period where I was getting excellent throws on Pidgeys, Caterpies and Machops like a machine, with a very good chance on Arcanine and Throh, then one afternoon it went away. I thought maybe I was not concentrating enough, but by the next morning I knew the game had changed. In one encounter I gave up even trying to catch a Zubat and for Throh I have to throw as hard as I can and hope I get a hit on the lower body.
You might be onto something with trying to shaft quick catchers. They'd have to totally overhaul the catch determination code as currently is determines the catch on ball impact (can verify by doing a catch 35 pokemon party challenge and watch a other players phone, the counter immediately increase on ball impact prior to a successful catch.)
It's timed, you can circle lock the circle then wait for pokemon to stop moving to still get excellent throws takes longer to do though but will help you on raids or shadow pokemon to not miss raid bosses
I KNEW IT!! I've been playing for years and was like, there's no way I'm just bad now?? And EVERY time I go to throw a ball now, it triggers the Pokemon to jump and I miss.
AND I did 3 legendary raids in a row the other day and all 3 Pokemon fled.
I guarantee this is Niantic trying to strong arm people into shoveling more money into the game
thank you for making this video. thinking about this makes me really upset and angry at niantic. their lack of clean code gaslit their player base into thinking they’re not good at catching anymore. lowering your fanbases confidence in themselves because of a catching bug is just making me so angry
Is anyone else having isues with the ball throws being inconsistent though?
I have a couple years old iphone and sometimes the ball doest even reach the pokemon even though it should, and sometimes mid spinning it will just let go. Don't see people talking about this but I lose a ton of pokeballs every day because of this.
I've been banging excellent throws since 2016 on every single pokemon in existence, that's why i have 1 billion total xp in my account, but lately it's been the biggest struggle ever all of a sudden. I thought i just became the worst player to ever play pokemon go after that. Now i know why and what happened, i'm so glad that i'm not alone experiencing this issue. I even got frustrated because i couldn't throw any excellents anymore at all, i was so used to it.
I messed up on 4 separate oppertunites to get Exelent throws on both galarian Articuno and Galarian moltres. They felt awkward as anything to land the throws and i was off by hitting them in the lower left corner through this hitbox shift-back.
In the last couple days I’v really been noticing aggression changes, Almost every quick catch attacks just when you get a decent ball lined up, EVERY SINGLE TIME, and if you miss it will have it timed perfectly for the NEXT ball lined up. I literally have to just sit there and wait for the guaranteed attack right at the start to be over 🙄
It doesn’t seem to only be when cartoon the wild and in raids, I also noticed it after defeating Team Go Rocket. ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️

Yeah landorus has been super hard to catch
If they put the Pokémon further on the catch screen, some of them are going to be impossible to catch, like Sawk or Scatterbug, especially on some phones that have a screen ratio where the width is smaller!
I usually never had such difficulties with excellent throws, but noticed it more with legendary Pokemon, since I can't say I try too hard with it on wild pokemon although some of the ones I usually get excellent throws on seems to have been off.
Probably did it on purpose to make the grind for XL candies and level 50 more difficult. Although a little bit late since I am already level 50 and have a lot of XL candies on some pokemon. Missed excellent throws on meowth, torchic, and mudkip. Even Yveltal been off on I still get them on Yveltal but seemed more difficult.
I just missed 4 yveltal raids in a row. I’ll admit I’m not good enough to throw excellents, but I consistently threw great throws with golden razz-berries. 4 in a row.
The lags are also annoying. Especially when there is rain.
I think Niantic does this intentionally so players run out of balls faster. My friend used to have 300+ ultra, but now his stock is only around 180. And hasn't been able to get more from Pokéstops.
We need to spread this video to every Pokétuber we know. Otherwise, Niantic will only pretend they don't know.
I knew something was going on. I usually spin with one hand, but lately, I have to turn my hat backward and use 2 hands. Also, I lost a lot of pokeballs
ALSO my Pokemon go plus + used to catch 5/10 Pokemon. I checked last night AND this morning it’s 3/10. Now this is with regular pokeballs too. I have not checked with great or ultra balls yet.
So it’s not just me thank you. Because the LANDOS!! Seems to have gone way back I gotta go high up or change . I hope they fix this madness

Yes they definitely changed the throwing mechanics. Not only that, my friend and I raid a lot together. They are about 10 levels behind and get a lot better stats pokemons from raids we do together. This game isn’t fair.
I have been hemorrhaging pokeballs and getting really frustrated, especially with pokes who are far back.
I lost a Yvetal and a mega Char, busting out of balls instantly on excellents. This is the first time I have actually not caught a pokemon at a raid.
OMG! I'm not going nuts lol... Thought I'd somehow got super rubbish at throwing this last week, then had the most frustrating raid hour for Yveltal last night, where all of us agreed that it was way more aggressive & harder to hit throws on than any of us remembered, but we put it down to the fact it was weather boosted.
They really need to sort this bug out as it makes the game pretty unplayable while doing what they want us to do- move about outside... I play while going for my walk & really don't have time to stop to throw a bunch of balls at an aggressive pokemon, then take a few steps forward & have to repeat the process again, I only have 60 to 90mins that I can go for my walk, so if this continues, I'll have to switch to using the go plus & not actually playing the game outside of weekend events I guess.
I hated Landorus so much because I thought the issue is just with him. I didn’t even raid much with him.

Same here no excellent throws in a few days and the last 8 raids i didn’t catch anything i could hit the Pokémon with the ball and it bounced off even the large pokemon to.
I tried to do a Landorus raid 2 days ago and out of 15 balls that were given I MISSED 6 of them (this is something that has never happened to me, ever). Out of the remaining 9 balls I could hit Landorus with, I could only do 2 excellent throws, and usually on raids, I can almost always do excellents. I thought I was going crazy, good to know it's not my fault, I hope they fix this...
I thought it was because I changed my phone and that maybe that 1 inch shaved off the screen ment I had to relearn my throws to accommodate. I was also suspecting lag as some of my balls would land and it wouldn't count as anything other than a catch as if I had not proper hit within the hit box. My friend was having the same issue and thought it was a lag issue too. Glad to see it wasn't us suddenly sucking at the game. lol
I thought my issue was that I switched buddies to one that doesn't have catch assist yet. I just thought I rely on my buddy a lot more than I thought. 😅
My throws just missing completely forget getting excellent or great. Thought I was going crazy. The distance and hit box has been so off. Used to be able to get nice and great throws consistently until this update.

8:09 "This seems intentional..." That was my assumption. I am an almost completely FTP player and I was wondering how I would get the millions of XP needed to climb from 40 to 50, but I found I was actually gaining XP at a good clip even with just one raid a day. Since they basically killed excellent throws for me, my XP gain has seriously slowed. At some point I'll have to start raiding a lot more to progress in levels.
I would look into friendship bonuses for XP grinding, as a fellow f2p player, this is the way!

It's for sure a thing. I just hope its fixed before comm day Saturday. I am about to hit 50 and I need those excellent throws.
Crazy how niantic just leaves us in the shade to find it out on our own. So many people questioning if it's themselves or the game. Just cringe how they treat their paying customers
