I have always had trouble with getting too fast with my upper body and hands. It really helps me to do the "pause" at top of swing allowing my lower body to initiate the completion of the swing after the pause. This method is the only I have found to get better tempo and eliminate "throwing" the club.
I could watch the 1st 7 seconds of this videos for like infinity 😂 absolutely effortless yet powerful swing. There something to be learned from Freddie’s swing, especially the way he drives his legs thru and clears his hips.
Same for me; i could watch it over and over again. I made the mistake of watching Trevino's swing before I saw this; i'll have to remember not to do that again.
@@DMR4736 I wouldn’t necessarily call you watching Lee Trevino’s swing a mistake. He was one of the greatest ball strikers this side of Ben Hogan. If you watch closely, Fred & Lee have similar characteristics in their swing, they both “chase” the ball down the line and stay down and through longer than most.
My all time favorite player. Loved to just watch his swing. At times I have tried to copy his swing and to this day, I think I still have what I've learned from watching him.
What is amazing to me is how smooth he looks in real time and then when you look at his feet in slowmo he gets airborne through impact. Crazy good footwork.
I have watched him since his first year on the tour and followed Fred a few times at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc Mi. For me, Fred's swing has always told me how his back was feeling at the time. How he has carried himself on and off the course and how much fun he was to play with. His temperament. Class Act

Greatest looking golf swing I've ever seen the tempo the timing he keeps his height so well there isn't alot going on either its so simple he just picks it up drops it inside and drives through but that tempo and rhythm can't be taught that's Freddies natural finesse
Now at 74 my best view of the swing was my introduction from the likes of Sam Snead and Bobby Jones via those old B&W video's when I was a kid as well as the "Shell Wonderful World of Golf." The two most underrated Fred Couples facts that I didn't know: huge calves, and the man doesn't hold a grudge. To say he admired Tom Weiskopf, wow. Weiskopf totally insulted Couples on Golf Digest back in the 90s, and later apologized for this. Obviously, apology accepted, with no hard feelings. With Couples, the Legend just continuous.

No fire in him to win or reach for more etc...without ever even talking to Fred Couples about anything to do with his golf or his life period. He had no reason to say these things, other than how easy the game appears to be for Couples. Weiskopf apologized, and said it was probably the dumbest comment he's ever made. Couples is just a class act.
Same here but I seem to have some sort of mental block with the driver I think smooth smooth and then last minute end up lashing at it the driver has forever been a problem for me
@@nathancrittenden8525 I have the same problem and the way I deal with it is to tell my brain that I am only going try hit a 100 yard shot for a normal drive (200+ yards), and I have had a lot of success..... especially with hybrids.
It’s funny you mention this. I read an article one time that Gary Player wrote…he was struggling with his swing and in a slump. He was playing with Julius Boros in a tournament and noticed how smooth and easy he swung the club. Gary starting pretending he was Boros and he won the Masters and British Open that year. Amazing!
"I'm 60......"😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 That means I'm getting old.💀 Mr. Couples, we didn't have alot of tv channels when I was a kid, so whatever was on, I'd watch. I sadly didn't appreciate golf in my youth like I do now, but when it was on, and you were playing, I was enjoying it. Thank you sir for the memories! And thank God for things like RUclips so I can go back, and watch those classic matches with a more appreciative eye.
I know this is three years later but there just isn’t a more beautiful swing than Fred Couples’. I find it interesting that he said Tom Weiskopf’s was his favourite swing, as it was always mine, when I was playing off 8 handicap at age 15 (I’m the same age as Freddie). I always tried to copy Tom Weiskpf’s swing when young but as I got older that would hurt my back. Now i have much more of a Freddie swing and it suits me fine. No back injuries! I’m not playing off single figure handicap anymore but that’s down to a career getting in the way and keeping me away from golf for 38 years! Freddie is loved by everyone because he is a genuine nice guy, a gentleman and still a great golfer. I love watching him. Thank you for posting. Very interesting video.
Back into the day I saw him at the PGA Medinah. Watching him on the range, I'm thinking of that slow swing, but it's not slow it just looks that way. His swing was so fast I could not see it.,saw the backswing. Love his swing ..smoothness ..easiness..
Absolutely love this guy. The ONLY time I ever watched live golf was when he played skins in South Africa, on the KZN South Coast, way back in the 80s. I was absolutely blown away by how effortlessly he could hit it a mile. Such a shame about his back. With so much natural talent, he could have been one of the greats.
As A fellow Seattleight I began golfing as a 19 year old in 1983 and I always watched Freddie and I truly tried to emulate his tempo and swing path (maybe is why I have had back issues too?) Hall of fame player!
I am only 5'4" and I have a very steep backswing like Fred. People are always telling me to shallow it out. But I generate a lot of swing speed through the ball, and I get a high launch angle into the greens. But like Fred I was also blessed with wide shoulders, and a narrow hips. This might not seem like a big deal....but it helps generate power, and I consistently out drive my 6 foot tall buddies who think I just muscle it.
Freddy is one of the best golfers ever. Silky smooth swing, and great attitude. He will always be my favorite golfer. P.S. he doesn't wear a glove neither do I
When Freddie was talking about Jack Nicklaus's famous 1 iron shot at the 1972 U.S. Open at the 17 th hole in the final round, Jack said he felt that when he took the club back that he hooded the the face, and made a compensation on his downswing, and the ball hit the flag stick and finished a foot from the hole.
It's been said that Fred is double-jointed and can literally turn his body further than most people. It's also helpful to be a naturally gifted athlete who probably has golf instincts that most others don't. Freddie is a great guy, too. He's given us decades of fantastic golf.
so are pretty much all of the pros. There's a reason all the overly technical golf instructors on youtube aren't on the tour... the real secret to a great golf swing is genetics mixed with lessons, repeated with practice until you develop muscle memory lol.

Golfers know how hard it is to make it look this easy. The grip pressure, balance, tempo, timing, power, syncing arm and body- all working in unison. Very rare ability.
If there's anyone who is basically an Easy Chair who can swing a golf club, it's Fred. Fluid and relaxed. I remember hearing this story where the announcers said to him 'Do you realize that you ALWAYS hit the center of the clubface ... ALWAYS'. He said 'No, I didn't know that'. Wow, what a state of mind. About Jack's 1-iron, he said in the middle of his swing, he felt the wind change direction so he adjusted his swing to compensate on the way down (fade or draw I can't remember which).
Freddy has been one of my favorite golfers my whole life. He is like Mr. Consistency. Not gonna dominate like Tiger (of old) but consistently finds himself towards the top... even as he got older. What a great guy. My 6 yo son who is a natural at golf, I'm going to steer towards studying Freddy's swing... and maybe cross breed it with a bit of John Daly too. ;)

I saw Fred Couples play in the Bicentennial Classic at Royal Melbourne in 1988. What a spellbinding rhythm! I would describe his swing as a mixture of old and new school… obviously Fred is very supple. He has long played the supposed 'new' flat footed backswing, but he uses a combination of that with a very 'wristy' open faced club head action Henry Cotton would have been proud of! Could watch that action for hours…sooooo smooth!
As a teenager Freddy won the Washington State Open bare handed and wearing Converse All Stars as his budget did not include golf gloves or golf shoes. By the way he was one of the few pros who never wore a glove.
If you watch closely he has a tiny bit of Furyk in his swing. He seems to bring it back steep (like he’s gonna cast) and then drops his hands into this in to out path. Furyk is the extreme example of this. But just love that move he makes at the top.
Look at the lower body people. He’s 60 and check out his calves. The lower body creates stability,balance, rhythm and rotation in his hips. But, that’s a gift he was born with.

I remember Curtis Strange on a broadcast once and he said: Nobody hits the ball as solid as Freddy. He said it may not always go where he wants it to, but he hits it in the center of the face every time.
I've always noticed how quiet Freddy's core and legs are during the first half of his backswing.It's as if he is just picking the club up with his arms and hands and then a little past halfway he really starts to turn and engage with the rest of his body.
In the top 5 best swings ever. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Ernie Els, Freddie, Payne Stewart, Steve Elkington---all great golf swings. While their techniques are different, they all share one thing in common--perfect rhythm that delivers effortless power. Fix your rhythm and you fix most of your swing problems.

You see how far he opens his left foot?
That allows you to clear your hips easier.
Also allows for pulls if your not careful.
If I had shoulders as wide and the flexibility to take the club back that far, I'd not be a Couples, but I'd likely be better.

Growing up in Seattle with all the rain made gloves useless.
I know a couple golfers from western Canada that don't use a glove or just use a rain glove all the time.
Growing up, I played without a glove because gloves were expensive and never seemed to go an sale. It wasn't because of the rain.

I've always noticed how quiet Freddy's core and legs are during the first half of his backswing.It's as if he is just picking the club up with his arms and hands and then a little past halfway he really starts to turn and engage with the rest of his body.
