Only Hogan fanboys critique the flying right elbow. Just because Mr Hogan said something at some stage in the past, does not mean he was correct, as you noted - Mr Nicklaus and Mr Couples would disagree.

One key aspect of Mr Couples' swing is the position of his lead foot.
Watch carefully at Fred Couples' stance in every shot and how he addresses the ball, and how open and flared outward his lead foot is.
I believe this is one of the key factors and physical mechanics that enables him to possess the most graceful swing in the history of golf that he does.
The open front foot allows for a much easier clearing of the hips on the down-swing, and a smoother, more free-flowing follow-through right to the finish, where he ends the follow-through by practically resting the club shaft on his shoulder after the whole swing process is done, and he's watching to see where his shot lands.
This is not easily noticeable in real time because of how quickly he clears through the ball and executes the entire process from start to finish, but his rapid acceleration through the ball with maximum authority and full power only really starts a few inches behind the ball in his down-swing and carries right through to his follow-through.
One thing I also interpret from watching his swing, is that his follow-through right to the end seems to be just as critical to the success of the whole process as anything he does on his takeaway and down-swing.
All that said, there will likely never be another Fred Couples for as long as the game of golf is played by humans (but I'll keep trying to make my swing look more like his anyway ;-)).

He's so over the top in his back swing but pulls everything together with his body rotation on the downswing and it's the smoothest in the game.

I've followed Fred's swing for a while, effortless precision...trying to emulate it on the range sometimes, but I guess my swing is my swing and it's no Freddie Couples...
    Great analysis and pick ups!

Hi Timothy I was actually at one of my local golf practice range areas today and I tried this. I stood closer to the ball narrowed my stance, flared out my left foot and started picking up the club straight up the way Freddie does and I was smashing my 7, 4i and then my three wood out of the sweet spot. Eye opening how that type of shot suits me 😳 I’m 53 6ft1 , 16 hcp so my swing speed is slower probs ….but the feeling off the face was memorable 🇦🇺👍🏻

Being from Seattle, Freddie has always been my hero. He is blessed with natural talent and has had the same swing for over 40 years.

How quickly he gets his flying right elbow below his left elbow on the downswing

What strikes me is from the start of the downswing until release his head never moves. That yellow circle covers his right eye the whole time.
