Such a shame about your poor old apple tree. It was one bonsai I couldn't stop thinking about after I first saw it. Loved the tour of your backyard and all your outdoor trees! Very inspirational! Can't wait to see the different style of repotting your elm - should be very interesting. Repotting videos are my favourite so I'm really looking forward to your upcoming videos! As always, thanks for another great video.
Thank you for the detailed tour of your beautiful garden. It was great seeing all the trees with some info and story behind each one. I enjoyed each tree from your moste finely developed trees to the youngest / undevelopeped trees. All fabulous work
Nigel, i LOVE the natural style of your trees! No "unreal" wire styles. THX for sending out your knowledge to the world! 99% i know about Bonsai is yours! Have a good day! Greets from Germany! *high5*
Really enjoyed the tour of the bonsai benches. How about a tour of the plant room bonsai as well? Good choice of the elm for repotting. Look forward to the video.
I always eagerly wait to see the root structure of the trees u select to root prune. Thanks for sharing with us Ur outdoor bonsai tour. It was a treat to our 👀. Love u 😍 God bless u...
I have 5 bonsai trees: 1. Ficus Retusa 2 years old 2. Lemon 1 year old 3. Blue Spruce 5 years old 4. Japanese Maple 4 years old 5. Goat willow 2 years old
Thanks for showing us around your benches Nigel. I’ve lost a couple of clay pots over this past winter. I may fix them and use them for some indoor trees.
So many trees you have Nigel, hope one day I have a collection like that only down side is I have started a bit late in my life I am 53 I did try 25 years ago but did not do well as there was not a lot of information them days ...
loved the "only bonsai that has ever been on a roller coaster!" i used to grow fava beans and garlic and flew to see my mom with both packed in my carry on. they made me open my luggage to see what the little round globes of garlic could possibly be. i said i was probably the only person who ever flew with favas and garlic. and years ago i lost my lovely old dwarf golden delicious apple tree. i looked odd so i touched it and it fell over. a victim of the gophers. at least you don't have those pests to deal with growing bonsai.
That's the tree I also picked and from this side of the screen it also looks like the top of the pot is more narrow then the base hard pruning or a broken pot job...looking forward to your next one
Nigel; In order to keep your pots from breaking in harsh winters, a friend in my local bonsai club uses an gutter heating element. He sets it on the ground with plastic lattice over it and then his trees. It also has a thermostat to control the temperature. Maybe it would help.
Hi Nigel! So good to see all of your outdoor trees doing well. I was wondering how your willows were doing. Also very sorry to hear about the Apple. That was my favorite tree too. Hope all goes well with the repotting season! I look forward to seeing all of the upcoming videos. Happy Spring! Zach
Hey Nigel, thanks for the tour and tree updates. Sorry about your broken pots. If the ceramic pots hold a certain sentimental value for you, I suggest looking into "kintsugi". Japanese pottery repair using gold. May be of interest for you. Best wishes.
I am pleased to catch a glimpse of that seed tray pot with the elephants still hanging in there. Was not sure if it would survive the Canadian outdoors but looks pretty good.
Sad your walnut didn't survived. I was very interested in this project. Anyway happy about your other trees, especially willows - wait to see their development. I am also interested in your autumn seeds -royal oaks and others. I also like you planted some black locust and honey locust seeds and now I have some seedlings of them :)
Nigel one quick question. Do you keep your chinese elm outdoor true the winter? I live in sone 4 in norway. And I heard that the chinese elm dosent need dormence periode? And can keep it year round inside. What to do?? Please help me. Dont know what to do.
Is that OK to stay the trees on the bench in winter without any protection to the roots ( in small pots)? Some suggested to bury them in the ground to survive the winter.
Hi Nigel! love the frequent uploads. I have a question about my tropical bonsai ( I think it is a ficus ). I just got a job in waterloo and I plan on traveling home on fridays leaving my tree for three days without water. The soil is not very organic so it drys out quick, any suggestions on how to keep the soil moist or just any suggestions would be great. thanks ( dont trust my dad to water it everyday at home ahaha )
I have been using RUclips now, before I started my channel, I kept a photo album with pictures of the re potting and major pruning of the trees. The album went missing, so I no longer have the record of the beginnings of some of my trees.
I had a really nice one in development, but it was over wintered in the ground and the mice ringed the trunk of the tree and it died. I have always meant to get another one!
Hi there If it's a nice ceramics bonsai pot that has cracked why don't you glue it back together and then add some sort of filler or spot putty on the inside to seal the crack properly? And then in future only use it inside, hehe. I'm new at bonsai so I've yet to have some of my bonsai exposed to the Danish winter, which I believe is similar to the Canadian winter, but I'm quite a klutz. Plus I sometimes order super cheap vintage bonsai pots thru ebay, and they don't always survive the transport. And if it's a really nice pot, I don't have the heart to throw it away, but glue it back together unless it has broken in a thousand pieces.
Just got a glimpse of it while you where showing some seedlings, so it might be an encoding artifact, but it looked as if the roof on the house in that view might need fixing. Timestamp is 14:16.
8:11 i have a chinese elm that's a bit bigger than my likings, can i do *root pruning* and some *main, primary branch pruning* connected to the stump without the tree expiring on me?
What is scale? Because I bought a tree seed recently and it says if the type is attacked by scale to use a specific insecticide with oil. Do you have any Idea what scale is I just started having bonsai 🙂
Scale are little microscopic creatures that build hard shells around them and suck the sap out of the trees. Here are the gory details... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_insect
Great to see all your trees. Sorry about your apple though; what happened to it? Such a shame after you've had it so long, but I guess it's still alive, so there's still hope. Thanks for the video.
Like you said in another video you are going for a Bonsaistyle typical for Canada Choosing the Mica pots to prevent your pots from breaking in the frost, would be a step in that direction i think. Ill take a hint from that I live in Holland and we have just like Canada a small window in the year of when our plants can grow. Though it doesnt get that cold. For me i decided, im going to be more busy with Willows Poplars and Elderberry The one willow i already have grows like crazy. The Elderberry takes heavy pruning very well. my Poplars are still cuttings but rooted almost instantly. These locals should make it more interesting and forgiving i think
Sounds like some really interesting trees for bonsai, the Poplars can make a really nice tree! I'll be planting some more interesting Canadian style forests this year!
I haven't yet! They are really hard to get up here in Canada. I'll try and get some seeds on order this spring. I was going to order seeds last spring, but I got busy and never did get time!
The tree put our two flushes of leaves after re potting, but I think I killed the roots over the winter.I noticed some of them were mushy when re potting, a bad sign. The cutting from the tree is doing well, but the main tree died. I was going to bring the tree in for the winter when the weather got cold, but our furnace broke in the winter and I was too busy trying to keep the house above freezing and getting a new furnace put in. It's too bad, it was a really nice tree.
started the process of rooting some Elm cuttings for bonsai a few hours ago. I think... :P Does anyone have any ideas about how to ID trees easy, on the fly? I have an app on my phone but it's not really doing the job too well.
I was going to bring it into my cold basement for the winter, but things did not go well that year, the furnace broke when the weather turned cold. I can't leave any trees mulched outside on the ground, too many rabbits and mice!
Hi Nigel Don't worry about the Chinese Elm which brought it from Dr George. It will survive it has grown with him for 20 years it will with you for many many years. I will pray to the Almighty for its long life. Have faith in God.
Nigel I also have many Larches, they all seemed dead but last week Boom they all came to life sooo pleased will sen pics colin ps have lost your email to send pics
Nigel, where does all your cash come from? Are you trust fund guy? Having all this property/acreage, this compound, the animals, all the time and money that goes into a luxury hobby like bonsai, you’re bound to have money and retirement. So what’s your story?
No trust funds! Just a lifetime of working and living frugally, always saving up and paying cash for everything. Most of my bonsai trees have been developed from seeds and cuttings, so there is little cost to my hobby just time and patience! I read a book.... The Wealthy Barber when I was young and most of it really made sense. I have followed many of the ideas in the book so I could retire at age 55. I'll never be able to afford to travel or spend money on much, but I would rather live modestly and within my means and have the freedom to enjoy the remainder of my life. That's the plan anyway!
Don’t know how I missed this oldie but goodie. Great stroll down memory lane. It’s like looking at my children’s baby pictures. Thanks, keep growing
Such a shame about your poor old apple tree. It was one bonsai I couldn't stop thinking about after I first saw it. Loved the tour of your backyard and all your outdoor trees! Very inspirational! You took a bonsai on a roller coaster!! That's commitment lol :-) Brilliant!! Cheers Nigel
I love your methodical style. Never miss a single detail.
the only bonsai to have be on a roller coaster, sounds prophetic...
Thank you for the detailed tour of your beautiful garden. It was great seeing all the trees with some info and story behind each one. I enjoyed each tree from your moste finely developed trees to the youngest / undevelopeped trees. All fabulous work

6.22 "Well I planted mine, but not in nature" gold! Haha
СТЕПХЕН КЕАРСЕЫ
He didn't plant it in London either! That was for our cities million tree campaign. Lol
I always enjoy your bench tours Nigel. Looking forward to working in the garden as soon as the weather allows.
Thank you Margaret, I'm looking forward to spring also!
Thanks for the walk-around Nigel! I love your collection and the story behind every tree. Especially the white pine that went on a rollercoaster!
Rainy season is very good and beautiful season to see ur backyard bonsai garden
I really liked that old apple tree...
I learn so much from your videos. Thanks again for what you do sir. Cheers from Utah
Thank you Hector, lots more videos coming!
Really enjoyed the tour of the bonsai benches. How about a tour of the plant room bonsai as well? Good choice of the elm for repotting. Look forward to the video.
As usual.... A stress breaker... Loved all the trees.....☺
Finally the video is up i really wanted to see the Chinese elm.
Really enjoyed the tour. Such a lot of jobs to do on your lovely trees.
Thank you, I seem to always stay busy!
Lovely tour of the outdoor bonsai collection. Liked the dinosaur too , among the trees.
I had been waiting for a video as such to see your collection.. thanks a lot Nigel!
I'll have to make a tropical tree tour next!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone yes.. I was hoping to see an update of the ficus religiosa you had planted on a plank of wood sometime last year.
Hi Nigel.
It's very nice to go around in your garden. I was surprised to note what winter can do to plants.
Thanks for the tour.
I cannot believe how big your channel has gotten Nigel. I mean wow.
Nice tour! You inspire me to collect more trees 😊
I always eagerly wait to see the root structure of the trees u select to root prune. Thanks for sharing with us Ur outdoor bonsai tour. It was a treat to our 👀. Love u 😍 God bless u...

Happy Spring!

Hi Nigel, your 3 Elms from the front garden and the Small Leaf Lime all look like fairy tale trees. I see nice potential there...
that silver birch, at 16:44, would be great in one of the 3d pots, as a mame. great episode. looking forward to the rest
I keep your wooden frame inside and only use it for shows, it's too nice to have it in the weather!
Very sad about the apple tree. It sure had a personality.
Sad your walnut didn't survived. I was very interested in this project. Anyway happy about your other trees, especially willows - wait to see their development. Can't wait for the video on the willows
Hey. I was wondering if Japanese made pots break over winter too?
Hi Nigel. Nice tour of your benches. I was just wondering about your Royal Oaks? I did not see them in your tour.
How do you keep track of when a tree was re-potted? You don't re-pot every tree annually do you?
I like this bench update style video deo more of them if you dont mind doing one inside would be awesome
Totally agree! I enjoyed it immensively, so I would def. also like and enjoy a tour of his inside trees :D
Is that OK to stay the trees on the bench in winter without any protection to the roots ( in small pots)? Some suggested to bury them in the ground to survive the winter.
Dammit :(
That apple tree is so beautiful
I really wanted to see your bonsi garden...👌👌👌...!!!
How do you keep the root balls of all those trees from freezing in winter, or does that even matter?
Hi Nigel! love the frequent uploads.
Hey Nigel. How do you keep track of all your trees and their history? Do you just use your Utube? Or do you keep a database to track everything?
I have been using RUclips now, before I started my channel, I kept a photo album with pictures of the re potting and major pruning of the trees. The album went missing, so I no longer have the record of the beginnings of some of my trees.
I think the white scales are normal for a Scott pine. It is normal for my bristlecone Pine.
Hey Nigel, what time in the year would you recommend for root pruning and repotting a young tree that overwinters outside? Greeting
Definitely in spring, after the sap has run and before the leaves come out!
Nigel, I was wondering if you've ever created a Eastern Hemlock bonsai. They look kinda like Spruce.
I had a really nice one in development, but it was over wintered in the ground and the mice ringed the trunk of the tree and it died. I have always meant to get another one!
Plastic and wood break too. What is a “myca” pot??
great collection!!!!
Sorry to hear about your Apple tree. It was certainly a beautiful one.
Love the garden tour. Still looking for the follow up to your pre-bonsai garden.
Hi there
If it's a nice ceramics bonsai pot that has cracked why don't you glue it back together and then add some sort of filler or spot putty on the inside to seal the crack properly? And then in future only use it inside, hehe.

And if it's a really nice pot, I don't have the heart to throw it away, but glue it back together unless it has broken in a thousand pieces.
I'm trying to just use mica pots on my hardy trees now and I save the nice ceramic pots for the tropical trees.
Just got a glimpse of it while you where showing some seedlings, so it might be an encoding artifact, but it looked as if the roof on the house in that view might need fixing. Timestamp is 14:16.
Locust trees are tough as hell, they are usually a month behind every other tree.
8:11 i have a chinese elm that's a bit bigger than my likings, can i do *root pruning* and some *main, primary branch pruning* connected to the stump without the tree expiring on me?
Yes, it is best to do this work in the dormant season. Here is a good article on this....

What is scale? Because I bought a tree seed recently and it says if the type is attacked by scale to use a specific insecticide with oil. Do you have any Idea what scale is I just started having bonsai 🙂

The Apple got apple rust disease, the right side is growing well, hopefully I can re style it some day. Thanks!
keep up the great work
Well you are not the only one losing an apple lost both my apple and my Blanco crabapple Nigel it seems this spring has hurt me more than winter did
maybe style one of the big spruce trees to look like a giant evergreen christmas tree bonsai?
Hey, what’s up Nigel do you have any extra larch tree seedlings
Sorry I don't, you would have to order them online from a nursery I think!
Like you said in another video you are going for a Bonsaistyle typical for Canada
Choosing the Mica pots to prevent your pots from breaking in the frost, would be a step in that direction
i think. Ill take a hint from that
I live in Holland and we have just like Canada a small window in the year of when our plants can grow.

Cool, cant wait to see it
it appears that its only the glazed ceramic pots that break the unglazed ones appear to not because there made with high quality clay.
Yes, a high quality clay or ceramic pot can be very durable, unfortunately they are too expensive for most people to buy.
I hope the Larch forest survives, it's probably one of my favorites.
6:47: lol @ the only bonsai tree that's ever been on a roller coaster.
12:00: damn these trees surviving life is really inspirational. It's a metaphor for our lives, too.
i just found your channel like a week ago have u ever done a cypress?
I haven't yet! They are really hard to get up here in Canada. I'll try and get some seeds on order this spring. I was going to order seeds last spring, but I got busy and never did get time!
Any update on this tree? Just purchased my first Chinese elm
The tree put our two flushes of leaves after re potting, but I think I killed the roots over the winter.I noticed some of them were mushy when re potting, a bad sign. The cutting from the tree is doing well, but the main tree died. is this chinese elm still alive?
what about your linden tree ?
what happened to the apple tree? :(
5:21 do you know which sedum species this is?
Mountain Ash is a favorite bonsai for myself
Really sad about your apple tree. I've been wondering how it's been doing.
At least it is still alive and I'm hopeful it can be re styled some day!
Nice tour! 😉
Sir dont you like to create a dead wood style bonsai
started the process of rooting some Elm cuttings for bonsai a few hours ago. I think... :P
Does anyone have any ideas about how to ID trees easy, on the fly?
I have an app on my phone but it's not really doing the job too well.
how about your lemon tree? long time no update :))
Why don't you bunker with stray and mulch
I was going to bring it into my cold basement for the winter, but things did not go well that year, the furnace broke when the weather turned cold. I can't leave any trees mulched outside on the ground, too many rabbits and mice!
Cant wate to see more on your Ceader Trees..
Hi Nigel, please make a video on 2 Spruce trees you have :)
A video will be coming! Thanks.
Thank you very much :)
Very nice
Hi Nigel Don't worry about the Chinese Elm which brought it from Dr George. It will survive it has grown with him for 20 years it will with you for many many years. I will pray to the Almighty for its long life. Have faith in God.
Thanks Bobby!
if you cant get rid of the pests just put a feeder away from the garden so they wont need to eat your plants xD
nice apple tree
Thank you AV Bonsai!
Nigel I also have many Larches, they all seemed dead but last week Boom they all came to life sooo pleased will sen pics
colin ps have lost your email to send pics
Find yourself a boyfriend who will not give up on you the way Nigel doesn't give up on his Japanese maple.
So much sparrow songs at the begining))

poor apple tree. dang bugs.
