Must admit, I wasn't keen on the straight trunk but loved it more than the S shape after you'd enhanced it. Really nice work! Thanks for all the tips :D
Probably as you get on bro, if youre anything like me, you'll kinda cringe at those generic cookie cut s-shaped "mall-sai" as many call them. Me especially chinese elms and other deciduous or broad leafed trees like it that are s-bends with the foliage pruned into little clouds akin to like is done for conifers like pines and junipers... nope! 😒😠😡😤 Ok i may be exxagerating how angry they make me lol but dont make me smile either. The straighter one has alot more potential imho as a classic broom style. It is a hard style to do really well though but when done well i love them. But really you have yo train it as a broom very early on or you get this sorta in between look thats neither nor. Anyway just my two cents.
Corin, you are always most welcome here in the U.S. I appreciate that you address the misinformation that swirls around on the internet. It is so frustrating watching bonsai videos that were done by people who are not fully informed or experienced. Your videos are a great service to the world of bonsai. Safe travels. All the best from Kokomo, Indiana.
Man I love your videos, as a beginner with a Chinese elm I find it difficult to find videos of what the future might look like for my little friend but you do a fantastic job at showing just how amazing Chinese elm trees are
I've been wanting a broom style elm for years, so I just bought myself an early birthday present from your website. Looking forward to receiving my new elm and thanks for all the great RUclips videos 👍
Another enjoyable video. Funny how trimming the tree and shaping it makes it look bigger. The trunk also appears more impressive. I keep all my chinese Elms outside and I never had a problem until last winter when I was away from home and lost some. Minus 10c. Damn!
I bought 2 of these larger elms last year and immediately repotted into a mix of akadama, lava rock, pine bark chippings and some john innes number 2 compost. I also did some serious root trimming along with a lot of foliage cutting and branch wiring. You really should see them now, absolutely thriving and look outstanding.
Hope to make it to Rochester one day for the exhibition! I think it so great that you get back over here with Bill V. Hope to meet both of you some day. Much inspiration from you two. Safe travels!
Wow, you make it look so very easy and fast! I think most of us are a bit nervous trying that, I found this video very useful thank you. I’ve just bought a Chinese Elm and I am trying my uttermost best. Still “feeling” when it’s too dry and still moist is a bit of a challenge but I’ve learned that if the top layer is a bit dry you can water it. Thanks again. Cheers from the Netherlands.
I didn't think I'd like the straight trunk but now I love it. I will certainly be looking for some in the near future. I absolutely love your videos and learn something new with every one.
Really enjoyed the in-person course yesterday. Have been watching your videos for a while on my other account which are always super informative but great to get a bit of a hands-on tuition for a sanity check. Came back with a red maple as well as the two trees we made on the course so that makes 7 at home now - should make sure no single tree gets 'too much' attention 😂
so i am a beginner with elms but isnt that trunk too thick for the pruned canopy of the straight trunk elm? Somehow it feels the canopy becomes too small with huge side of the trunk. is that how its supposed to be?
What’s the best way to look after these in the winter indoors this is my second Chinese elm now it’s full of life at the moment just really dreading the winter
im in ny. other side of the state so too far for me to go sadly. have a fun time and safe travels! hope we get some straight trunk imports here in the us soon too lol. i like the natrual look a lot more then the overly twisted.
Great video, I was well impressed with the results. I have just picked up a Japanese Elm about 8” high with a nice curve in the trunk so I watched with great interest, it was very dry (thank you B@Q) so I had to drench it when I got home and let it drain. I think it is in desperate need of repotting as the compost is very lacklustre, what do you recommend as a medium?
I couldn’t resist temptation got the better of me much to the dismay of the mrs.I’m looking forward to starting my bonsai journey may it be a joyful one
It should have done, was it outside in winter? a few people that keep them outside ended up with dead / grumpy trees due to the cold winter in the UK. (assuming you are UK based)
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio I am UK based, yes I did leave it outside over our last winter. It definitely isn’t dead as it has lovely green foliage however growth seems extremely slow/ grumpy like you said. Maybe a repot in the spring as it hasn’t been reported since I bought it from your studio 3 years ago. Yearly checks on the root system didn’t indicate a repot that’s why I didn’t do it last year
On the big elm. I thought having two branches across from each other, especially lower on the trunk, would cause bulging? Is that only on certain species of trees?
I will be doing my first soil change in spring on 3 Chinese elms I purchased. Is a soil mix of akadama , pumice , lava rock and pine bark ok . The soil it’s in is poor . Thanks. I’m in wales uk
I just got a bonsai and I’m interested in taking care of it properly. Can you tell me what cream or Lotion did you put on the trunk you cut? What is it called?
For the health of deciduous trees, isn't it essential that they go for a winter period without their leaves in order to use the energy to promote root development? Its my understanding that by stopping a deciduous tree from its natural fall cycle, it will adversely affect the trees' health long-term. Yours look very healthy though, so perhaps im mistaken, or maybe elms are just tough enough to handle it?
Probably the best bonsai video I've viewed in a long time. I'm a big fan of the woodland style chinese elm and have a collection of 5 now that all thrive indoors. I've definitely learnt something new from this video.
I recently bought a Chinese elm, I wasn’t sure about the shape because it isn’t an S shape, it’s like the one on your left, good to ear it’s an ok shape. I’m a beginner.
I actually had an S shape trunk with a normal top which i thought looked really nice but I thought I had not done It right and threw it away 😅 was only a B&Q one so it's ok
I recently got a Chinese elm, beautiful little twiggy branches but it's kind of a little odd 😂 it has the same canapy as the straight trunk but has a S trunk

Ive purchased one also.
These woodland style chinese elms look awesome and a nice size also.

I was amazed by that too, he took off half the tree but it appeared bigger afterwards
Nice work in the hands of a master. Safe travels to Rochester. Hopefully your demonstrations are put up on RUclips.

3:52 I'm glad you talked about this style. I really do not like the "S" shape. The tree on the viewers left better mimics a natural tree.
You must be the best passing on your thought process for the beginner fantastic keep your videos coming 😎Dennis
Nice demo. Had no idea u apprenticed in rochester. Ill be there for my first show. Hope to see u there!
Love the acoustic scissors 😎Dennis

Omg that straight tree looks magnificent what a beautiful job i LOVE it❤

That's great, glad you enjoyed the day
If kept indoors all year is fertilizing the elm necessary during winter months.
Wish I had your vision I look at my elm and have no idea what to do with it
Lovely trees the bigger ones, a good price too.
I love this tree, do you have similar material in stock at the moment?
so i am a beginner with elms but isnt that trunk too thick for the pruned canopy of the straight trunk elm? Somehow it feels the canopy becomes too small with huge side of the trunk. is that how its supposed to be?

TLC and Time will tell, a few grumpy trees around this year, hopefully be okay next year
Love your video. What soil do you use for the Chinese elm? Is it the Bonsai Soil?
Yes, we use our bonsai soil mix, or Akadama. But you may need to use a different mix, as your climate isn't the same as in the UK

just use neat akadama, no need to over complicate it with so many ingredients
Would love to see a follow up on this one.
I have 2 young Chinese elm seedlings coming in the mail from a nursery and would like to know the best soil for its age.
Great job. Wish we could order in US. Enjoy your videos.
What’s the minimum temperature a bonsai Chinese Elm can survive in the winter?
About -10
Mine are out side all year round
What's the best soil for Chinese elm bonsai trees can you use regular bonsai
I just got a bonsai and I’m interested in taking care of it properly. Can you tell me what cream or Lotion did you put on the trunk you cut? What is it called?
It’s called lac balsam. Wound sealant. On our website www.bonsai.co.uk

I like the big trunk on straight one
Wow so nice after pruning
Thanks a lot
I like ones that look like mini natural trees
What size aluminum wire do you use to tie down the bonsais into the pot?
2mn

They are very adaptable. Cooler spell in winter let’s them drop a few leaves as new ones emerge.
I'll be at the us National Show on Saturday as well. Are you doing the first demo or the second?
Not seen the schedule yet !
Hi corin, Is it ok if my chinese elm has autumn colour already? Its the elm i worked on with you in a beginner workshop a couple years back
