This is one of the best videos I have seen not only on a Chinese Elm, but any bonsai. I truly appreciate the common sense approach using terms that are easily understood by someone just starting with their Elm. I have bookmarked this and will refer to it often. Thank you so much,

Great video and explanation. I kno i requested this a while ago and this is great . I bought the grand elm from you and its one of my favorites. The trees primary branches have most of the secondary branches growing upwards so i wire most of them down but now i have a better understanding of what i wanna do to create pads on this tree. Thanks for the video. ! Now we need a video on satsuki azalea on how to shape them from scratch.cant find one video on them. Their branch structure is alot to work with.again u teach some great stuff on here and cause of u i actually started this journey! Thanks

Hi Jason, great to see a video on clip and grow as i think there is an over use in wire used in Bonsai that you see.You do not have the problem with scarring which you get with wire. I know it does not work with all trees therefore wire has to be used.
Sooo, I got a tree from yous, and I feel I sort of ballzed it up. Good to know the trunk itself has the capacity to regenerate.

I inherited a Chinese Elm starter kit from a daughter who received it as a gift February, 2022. It came home from college in May over watered, then went three weeks with no water, and I stepped in. It is coming back well after a few weeks of TLC. I’ve never had a bonsai but always wanted to. Would love to see a video of when to start pruning a small tree such as this. Should I let it just grow for several months (or more) before thinking about pruning, etc.

Love it! And I've said before in my videos that blue pots are sometimes overlooked but often the best for these small and pretty trees.
Same techniques apply with most deciduous? I clip and grow most of my Japanese maples this way. I’m still learning how to use sacrifice branches. When the inside leaves and branches begin to get shaded out I go in a clean it out. (Typically in late May and late August.)

What season did you do this? Judging by the growth it’s either late spring or late summer? A lot of videos say “I did this in late May” but that leaves me guessing. We bonsai enthusiasts around the world need to talk in terms of seasons. “During early spring budding” or “In late winter after the last frost” or “In late autumn after all leaves have fallen”.
I agree! I've learned a lot from the S. African nurseryman but there's 6 months of separation. My brain farted for a year before the realization.

I wish the Bonsai experts would talk more about what to do in the seasons. Should I allow my indoor tree to live as it pleases during winter and then wait to spring to trim?
Bonsai Morai is what you need. It’s some hours long videos so you’ll have to be patient and absorb all the information. But hey bonsai is a lifetime thing anyway
Do you think that huge inverse taper will grow out? How about that intense wire scar?
Great video, but I feel like it would be much easier to understand while in person. Some of the camera angles made it difficult to see in which direction some of the clips you were trying to show us. Thank you for all your informative videos you guys post!

I have two beautiful chinese elm bonsai trees that I purchased from your store. I ordered one last year but my beloved died during the winter. I don't want the same thing to happen to the two that I have now. I live in Wisconsin and we are in the fall season. The temperatures are in the 40's to 60's and winter is approaching. I keep my trees indoors with a grow light. Since I keep them mostly indoors, do I need to fertilize the trees during the winter months? If there are anymore helpful tips, I'm all ears. Thank you!

Hi, not sure if u will see this, i have a lavender star bonsai, and im trying very hard to find content on maintaining it, bought it recently and it has been growing pretty ok. but with this clip and grow technique, when would be a good time to do it?.do i leave the bottom brunches like yours to grow long before clipping?i have a single long brunch below growing and its about 6"..plant is about 12" tall including the long apex branch that will prolly be clipped off as well, main stem is about 1/4" thick.
Maybe dumb question (new guy). Could you graft one of the cut branches in that large curve?

Is there a difference between Chinese Elm and Seiju Elm?
I am very new to Bonsai. I bought a 4 year old Chinese Elm. The grower has cut all the lower branches off and only a crown exists. How would I get this tree to grow branches lower on the trunk? I have ordered products from easterleaf and really find your videos very informative. Thank you for all the great tutorials.
The branches should develop on their own with good light. It's normal to a do a trunk cut and reduce the tree. Give it a spring season to see what develops. If they do, just let them grow out to thicken. Hope this helps, Jason

My Chinese Elm has relatively darker leaves, does that indicate insufficient sunlight?
No,just maturety. Fresh leaf should be lighter than.
How do you get branches to grow on a stretch of bare trunk?
They just bud naturally.
How old is this tree? The trunk is beautiful.

when you cut a branch that's shooting straight out, why will it grow in a zig-zag -- why doesn't it just grow straight out again?
Because the leaf nearest the cut will turn into a side branch and grow out from the existing branch.
Its gona grow straight from the bud at the end of the cut usually. So you can imagine the process of cutting and cutting it again may produce a zig zag pattern.
It doesn't seem like a great place for a first branch on the inside of a curve.
I have a seedling Chinese Elm. I was wondering if you wired that trunk as a seedling to get all that movement?
