how you cut so fast and end up with such an amazing result just amazes me! Thank you for saying what you are doing and why as you do your videos, it's such a learning experience :)
The speed with which you work is amazing. Your experience shows. That pruning would cost me three hours at least. And the result would be mediocre.😊 That was a great watch. Thanks!
Such a Master at his work you clearly love your job? you make pruning that daunting looking large Chinese Elm so effortless and I for one can't wait to see it's progression
Truly amazing to see how quickly you are working and explaining the reasons for doing it. Just great !!!!
Thank you. I would not even know the first step to do for the big tree you shaped. Bravo! You are definitely a Master artist!. One thing I will say is to fix your sound Mic quality. I have all my speakers on high and the computer and your voice is still coming out soft. I would just invest in a clip on Mic or something to allow the sound and your voice to carry louder so your audience can hear you better. I so much thouroughly enjoyed your presentation so very much aside form the volume problem
I purchased a Chinese Elm bonsai a year ago, and it has grown, then struggled, then bloomed then struggled since. It's leaves keep getting black spots on them, then it drops those...alot of them. Then it buds again and looks good for a bit...then black spot leaves, drop, repeat. It's an indoor, in window, South facing...lot's of sun light Southern California tree. Advise on how to get it stable?
I love me some "bomb-saae" :-)
Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge.
You are like a good chef in the kitchen. The skill and speed of your cuts tells a story of many years of experience.
Cheers mate from Aus.
Hi Sam, 👍
Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing. greetings from Spain and until the next video👍😊
You made a great job of pruning that elm Corin.
Could you put a time lapse on the tree for the coming weeks? That would make an interesting follow up.
We thought about but as it is in a heated greenhouse its hard to photograph and it gets moved around so hard to get a static shot over time.

Yet again, a no-nonsense, highly instructional video showing exactly how to professionally deal with a tree that would perplex the average amateur like myself. No other bonsai channel comes close!
The Chinese elm you’ve had for awhile is absolutely gorgeous . The trunk is amazing .
What's not to like with Chinese Elms. They are tolerant of bonsai techniques and if grown outside develop lovely small leaves and great ramification. Clearly they can deal with a hard early summer prune. Nice presentation showing what can be done.
Superb video. So ,so good. Good quality sound and image, Excellently presented .
Amazing to watch you work and how you cut the tree so quick , cannot wait to see what its like in the next video . Really enjoyed this one guy's!!
I have been a subscriber for some time now and enjoying the videos particularly the ones that has sort of a history like the ones that once belonged to your father 👍🏻
What a transformation! Great to watch it being done so skilfully. Looking forward to seeing it again in a few weeks time.
Thank you for this - I went right out and pruned my little starter tree,, it looks a lot better!
I saw the big elm from the customer and my first reflex was, where are my scissor ??
Been doing Bonsai now for quite a few years...and I love your videos. I always learn something new or a tidbit. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦 precision to the point Greenwood.
I hope the owner watches this video and does the work themself next time. I always find it a shame how people own trees like this but don't experience the satisfaction that comes from working on the tree to improve it. That for me is what keeping bonsai is all about.
Most known bonsai in Japan are owned by rich ppl who keeps them at their Masters nursery. They don't work on it, they keep it to admire and enjoy when needed.
I’m curious how much that elm 🌳 was when you purchased it? I know here in the USA 🇺🇸 if I’d had to guess retail at a store online you’d be looking at prob 2.5k-4k. I was actually was gong to purchase a Chinese elm tomorrow for $500 that’s over 30yrs old a real steal imo. Beautiful piece you have!!
It is a customers tree. Generally prices in the USA are about 3 times higher than in the UK. At least they were when I was last over there.
This video prompted me to drastically prune my Chinese Elm and it's now got so much new growth I can hardly believe it. Thanks for the inspiration. Grettings from Germany (via Ravenshead).
Excellent video, really enjoyed that.
I bought several small Chinese elms from you many years ago and today they are all thriving indoors and are magnificent specimens now.
Perfect timing I was just planning on pruning my Chinese elm at some point over this week
That's one hell of a haircut you gave it! Can't wait to see how it looks in 6 weeks time
Greetings from Japan Corin. I very much admire your skill and your eye for design.
Thank you so much 😀
great video...looking forward to the update
Just been given a Chinese Elm and I've fallen in love with it. It's bit of a tangled mess. Is it safe to prune and cut back now in late December? This video has given me inspiration.
best done early spring, for best results
How do you encourage your old one to grow a trunk like that?
Just bought a dwarf jade from you as my starter, planning to get chinese elm next year, just wondering what’s that you applied after you cut elm branches?
Its Lac Balsam, wound sealant, its on our website. Enjoy your tree !
Wow awesome tree
Great job.. Thanks for the video.
Might pop in soon
You make it look so easy.
I visited this nursery a few days ago and was so amazed by the beauty of some of youre tree's I couldn't resist picking up a small Chinese elm. Perfect video for a beginner like myself thank you.
When you go to the hair dressers for a little bit off the top and you come out bald.! 😂 hope the owner is alright to watch this video but the tree will be better for it !
Good job sir. Very beautiful
Awesome job corin thanks bud
I love your personal tree collection. Some mighty trunks.
A really really useful video. Thank you.
Bonsai phill very good quality trees thanks corin and a lovely video thanks
I got a chinese elm that has 2 trunks that emerge from the soil and then converge into 1 trunk a couple inches above the soil. What is this condition called?
don't know if I missed it... but when is a suitable time to do this? great channel by the way.
At last a daylight pro many thanks , glad i found you ,see you soon. Rj001
Do you grow you Chinese elms indoors during the winter? I’m getting my first one is a few days and it gets below freezing where I live. Should I keep it indoors during the winter?
Yes, we grow them inside to keep them in leaf
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio what temperature do you keep them at?
I have one ficus but it's very unusual shape font know what to do . I wish I could send u a picture so you could see it
Great video 👍
that big trim, you been doing thousands of trees! id get confused what to trim in no time
Wow! Thanks Corin.
Brand/name of those pruners?
thnx for sharing, always helpfull
Love the video! Thank you for the advice. My only complaint is that it hurt my soul when you cut the bottom branches around 4:14. They would have been so nice for developing more taper!
It would hardly make any difference now its in a bonsai pot, unless grown out really long and therefore robbing energy from the bits we wanted to leave.

Resists you mentioning the tool you’re using!
Wonder if it would be possible to do a video with nursery plants most videos on youtube show how to work . On plants that are double digits in age,. My experience so far all be it limited is the nursery stock under ten. Inchs in. Height very small flimsy over the last year I have killed at least two or three junipers and at 14 pound a pop is expensive like i say I'm new to the hobby so any help really appreciated
of course, I have done a few, check out the Cedar from nursery stock video
Thanks for that. Love your accent
I've a Chinese Elm a bit bigger than this one that I bought last year. It's not been pruned or repotted for at least two or three years and I'll be working on it soon so both this and your repotting video are coming in handy..
That’s good to hear. Glad to be of help. Good luck
Is there a specific reason that you pruned it in a triangular conifer style? Is it for English climate horticultural reasons or personal taste? I am from a warm climate and deciduous trees don't take that form here.
Because the top is still forming, check out the later videos of the same tree / procedure, (part 2 and part 3) and there is more growth and a broader apex then develops in future.
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio thanks mate👍🏾
It looks like there's a hesitancy to clip branches on that customers tree. I feel like that leads to the tree not making the advances its could make in terms of branch structure. Its still beautiful without question. Just looks slightly odd without its clothes on (leaf mass).
check out part 2 and 3 of this series, to see how it develops !
Super!!
Azerbaycan!
Great camera work. it is helpful to see the details. This enhances the educational purpose of the video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Just for the record, if it leaves the white fluffy stuff behind they are mealy bugs not scale insects. scale look like a shield and make things that look like "scabs" on the trunks
yes, I know that, they were scale insects as mentioned.
Mate, you need to be playing rugby!
Are all Chinese elms “ lacebark “?
Are all Chinese elms “ lacebark “?
Brilliant video as ever for me the best you tube bonsai channel
Two experienced local guys did the same to my big elm 3 years ago and it looks so much better now
Hi Corin dont know if it is correct to put these two words together....Horrendous perfection.. Really cant wait to see the follow up.. Again keep up the good RUclipss THANKS.
Simply awesome to watch
Absolutely brilliant
What time of the year to prune?
Good job buddy
Heavy work you done, still it’s looking best we’ll. when was that date, pls.
This was done June
Very informative.
WOW! Can't wait to see the customers Chelm in a few weeks, I'll bet there's a much more defined and refined tree!-Nice one Corin 👍😎😎
Nice work, your big trunk elm bonsai to the left is stunning, maybe 30 yrs old?
That looks drastic but the tree will be better of for it
wait for the follow up, its doing very well at the moment - watch this space
Great video, I have been struggling with my Elm and I think it needs a good prune. When is the right time to prune it back hard?
Beautiful. ! 👍
Wow ..scary but educational..I just got 3 Chinese elms 3 years old....this is what I need in terms of knowing about the tree
grest tree lots of vigor
15:26 Never thought I would see that much action in a bonsai video. Would work great in 3D.
thanks again. just keep videoing. bring us some hornbeams, please. good luck
excelente, siempre me llama la atencion , el vigor y lo sanos que estan tus arboles e ahi mi pregunta anterior ,que usabas como nutriente, tambien el lugar donde haces tus videos esta siempre ordenado y limpio. un saludo
We use Naruko as fertiliser. I'm glad you enjoy the video's, we film them here in my studio
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio ok thanks you
I love pruning videos. Order and structure. Bonsai is also a political statement ☺️😂
What saddens me is people have these lovely trees and then completely let them go. It isn't hard to find the resource, even as a beginner to understand how to prune and maintain your trees.
is it indoor bonsai
Is the cork bark chinese elm and chinese elm the same? If so, how do you get the corky bark to grow?
I have an ~12 year chinese elm, which I kept indoors the most part of its life. I didnt care for him very intense the last 2-3 years, but gave him water regulary, so he is okay, but didnt grow very much. Would it make sense to plant him in a large Pot or bucket and let him grow outside for 1-2 years on the balcony ?
Yes, and feed it well from may-oct
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio Should I plant him in a typical Akadama Mix or just normal soil ?
Thank you for your quick answers. I really enjoy your helpful videos. @@greenwoodbonsaistudio
Good job
will bonsai over grow if left unintended for years still in a shallow pot?
My tree hardly has any leaves, can you please tell me what to do to improve its appearance? I will really appreciate any advice
Re pot it. Feed it
Thank You very much
Great video! Thank you for the awesome content as well.
I fast forwarded this video (just for fun) from the 9:32 ... to the 24:51 and i said to myself ..."WHOAHHH" .. but once the foliage fills in .. this bonsai is going to be stunning. Could you provide an update once the leaves fill in again ?!? Thanks .. (Updates are always fun to view ... then one gets the REAL "after" effect ...)
Check out part 2 and part 3 for the updates
Iwas wondering where you buy your bonsai tools?
I run Greenwood Bonsai Studio - www.bonsai.co.uk
Oups Travail
Can’t wait to see an update from the Elm severed trimming it had
Definitely have to have an eye for it. Someone can learn over time
Hello :) can i repot and prune my elm at the same day? :)
