Peter was my first inspiration. He remains my favorite Bonsai master. Thanks for all your work, enthusiasm and common sense Peter.
Lindsay Spears me too he’s just a great man.
Me three.. 8-10 months ago. Watched every video!.. Yes Peter!, we tryna get a heart! 😉
Indeed, he is a real master
i just went on a 12 mile hike through the mountains here in colorado. it is a fantastic place to see natural bonsai looking trees. there are little areas of pines and oaks that are covered with them. a word of warning, be young or be prepared to recover after hiking to see them.
Peter is a honest, wise man. I've learned a lot from him. Now I try to save everything, air layering is my favorite past time. Thanks.
how do you like breakfast on a sunday,i like mine with Peter Chan, conifers, maples, and zelkova and larch
he surely is the man ,thank you
alan cunningham me this is now 25 weeks in a row 👍
You are the best teacher I ever saw in bonsai..thanks for your teaching n techniques
You are an absolute treasure to we bonsai enthusiasts. I’ve spent hours watching and learning from you. Thank you so very much!
I feel like the Heron's Bonsai merch range needs to be expanded to include branded Hawaiian shirts.
12:00 "very very lovely tree..I hate this variety because...." 😂lol
Peter...Heart-felt thanks from Groote Eylandt Northern Territory Australia... you are an inspiration on many levels. As a landscape architect I appreciated your 1986 vision of Zelkova perimeter plantings and relate to the essence enjoyment of seeing your vision coming into reality. Again...thank you so much!
Your red shirt contributes zest and vitality to today's sharing...Wonderful!😃
Always learning something new from Peter. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge.
Peter wearing a Hawaiian shirt is like a Zebra wearing stripes!😎
I like that concept. Very nice description.
I've been gifted a zelkova serrata bonsai recently and I've been real timid with it since it's my first bonsai. this has helped me a lot! I will try out my new knowledge right away :)
Peter Chan is the man. I bought a chinese elm that was mislabelled as a Zelkova quite recently, but this definitely showed me the difference more clearly! What a beautiful bonsai species.
I love that he loves all the trees!!
So much work in a short time Amazing love your video and nursery
Fantastic. Yet another great video. Thank you Peter.
Lovely, I loved that. I have lots of rooted Zelkova cuttings ready to develop.
Another wonderful informative video! Thanks Peter!
The bonsai forests in this episode are all amazing, as usual!
Thank you very much for explaining the difference. I have been wanting to grow zelkova for a long time. I love the leaves on these trees. I have bout 10 cuttings that i am waiting to root. I also have seeds from the trees hoping to get them to grow next year.
I can't help to think of Bob Ross painting amazing paintings everytime Peter gets to using those clippers.
Thanks again Peter.
It's such a beautiful tree!
Peter, I'm cherishing the tiny Zelkova you gave me when I visited Herons in November. Thank you!! I have also uploaded a couple of recent videos of work on my large broom zelkova - I would be very happy to hear your comments! 😊 Regards from Dave in Madrid
You lucky person!
#Jealous
Good to see cypress at 0:17 from a previous lesson.
Seeing the elms, beginning about 3:00, my first thoughts were "Good taper" and "Smooth bark" and at 3:19 "Look at the back buds!" For an 80-foot tree. All trees now more interesting, thanks again,
I would love a little Zelkova bonsai like that.
Thank you Mr. Chan. Stay well.
Simply excellent. Thank YOU 🙏
Very interesting. I will make sure to keep on top of my Zelkova, thank you!
Thanks for the video Mr. Chan, these are some great looking trees. I've been practicing bonsai since January in my one bedroom apartment, I can only hope my Carmona will survive until I can get more! Cheers from Baltimore
I don't have zelkova serrata, but going to get one or two small ones for little mame bonsai. Thx for sharing Peter and can't wait for the next one..stay safe to all and Cheers 😄.
Great little tour of the property. I am sure it is vast and right now it should be worth quite a lot. If you have kids, make sure they don't sell it haha!!!
26:57 The anticipation was killing me! Peter you madman!
Thanks for talking trees to me. In my own humble way am trying to grow little trees.
Hi Peter Chan, I accidentally found your book named ” the bonsai beginner’s Bible ” in the Thailand book fair. It is a great book and I brought one. Keep healthy to you and your lovely plants.
Heron is a wizard!
Excellent video and information.
Thank you, beutiful trees and good education
I've been growing one now for 5 months. It grows so, quickly. Mine is in the V shape. With it being my first, I want to learn from this one, I am doing well so far but realise that it can easily get ao big so quickly where you do lose control.
Excellent video! 🌹
Hi Mr. Chan, You have a very artistic eye. I love the way you did the tiny zelcova's. As I said before you look very nice in red.
Lovely video Peter, thank you, very insightful! Could you maybe do an "all about Wisteria"? I know you've covered them before but i would love to have an in depth video with all your tips and tricks for pruning and repotting them:)
I'd like that too. I have a couple in my yard that I'm growing. There more coming. I'd also to know if you use iron chelate on your wisteria. I had a couple years ago where the leaves went transparent. Turned out the answer was iron and I could npt find anything for them.
Lovely small trees, especially when put three together into those shallow "primitive" style pots.
Great watching once more.
Beautiful thank you
Another great video.
I would love to see some examples of Podocarpus/Buddhist Pine and how to deal with them.
I tell you what Peter really knows he's stuff when it comes to these tree's... everthing he has said I found out the hard way.... but luckily I watch my tree's endlessly and quickly corrected the problems Associated with this species
Thank you Piter !!!!
Leaf shape, so beautiful
Thank you for sharing.
Lots in Japan used to line streets. An inverted triangle it creates wonderful shade up high without obscuring the road ahead. The bark has a delightful pattern. Keyaki is Japanese is a superb tree. There are long boulevards in Tokyo with this amazing architectural tree.
Ten years ago, when I moved into my rented converted dairy, I planted a zelkova as there was only a rose and some weedy osteospermum here. My stunning zelkova is now at least thirty feet high, I love it but sadly, I know when I leave here, it will probably be cut down. Fire is a constant fear here in Australia and others don't realise the benefits of deciduous exotics over natives in fire prone areas. A good reminder that everything is temporary and to enjoy the moment.
great inspiration, thnks
Week 25 of breakfast with Peter 👍
Stay well
Stay safe
Amazingly Beauty!
It reminds me of my curry tree. It grows like crazy and shoots seedlings everywhere. Hey, I should make a curry tree bonsai!
Thanks peter 🙏🏾
another leason on possible trees to grow, thank you
I have what I believe to be zelkova. It's funny because I've been pulling my hair out trying identify it. This helped for sure(:
This has inspired me to try different species in Canada where I live! How exciting!
I have a random question... is it ever done to have more than one species in a forrest group? Maybe two different maple spiecies?
I have just done a video of a Forest planting using different species - look out for it.
Hi Peter.
I have taken delivery of my Edible Fig Starter. I'm very pleased to see that the one i have is the exact same one on your website, the Fig on the right of the 2. I have it in a pot with some Sphagnum moss and some potting compost. Have i done the correct thing as you say on your site that Figs like poor soil.
(love your video's, very informative and interesting)
Regards Bill
I love the small trees potted in the beautiful pots. How do you ensure the small trees get enough water. I find my small pots dry out so quickly i really have to be careful in the hot weather.
wow, i bought a Zelkova Serrata yesterday...
You should do a bonsai podcast so I can learn while I’m at work
Extremely informative and helpful video thank you, do you ever work with Celtis sinensis or Africana varieties?
I do but we dont often get it here. I have only about a dozen of this species but it is not popular with customers.
Could we see a Jade bonsai, video when you get a chance please? Thanks for all your good videos!
Resident in Slovakia. Will Zelkova last through the winter like a bonsai outside in the open air? Thank you very much, you have great videos that I keep watching and learning to make beautiful bonsai.
Zelkova 👍
cannot be explained more than that
really thanks
do you have place where we can ask questions
i am new on Bonsai world and i dont want to do mistakes :)
Best
I like your shirt and trees
Merci ! thx ;)
Nice,,,......
You need to put some little starter trees on your online shop, these are not easy to find in the UK. I've been looking for ages. Great video thanks Peter.
I think it is there on our store.
I've looked again today . There is a stunning forest of yours. Way out of price range for me, I only want a starter tree. A few years old for me to develop. 🌱😊 But there isn't any on there.
Peace and harmony from Baltimore...
I once had a foreign visitor who came to our nursery and he kept saying "Piss on you". I was a bit annoyed at first until I realised what he really meant was "Peace on you".
I just got one of these
The Zelkova Elm Castle - site of Forest magic.
💯
I had 2 Chinese elms 30 years ago. One went in the sum and I had to give it to the church ,now it’s 30 ft. The other gets only morning sun and it’s planted in the ground 18” tall ! It hard to keep them small !
Hello,
I love this! My zeklova leaves are brown and dry (looks burned). What do I do, help.
Often I'd like to re-see "before" pictures of trees you've worked on.
Thanks
Hi Peter, What season would you recommend doing a corrective trunk chop for a Zelkova in development?
I'm glad you included the tree @ 20 minutes. I at least know how much abuse it can take. Looks like they are hard to kill.
It might be a good idea to buy a small clip on microphone that can connect to your camera so your sound levels remain more equal.
Nice! Does the Zelkova have Fall colors?
They turn a brilliant red-purple with some yellow and orange. Pretty much all autumn colors at once.
Hello... i love all your vids,,,where u from sir? Ty
The tree at 37 min looks like the whale-shape tree on Zou in one Piece :D
Peter, when do Zelkova Serratas usually come into leaf?
Mine still hasn’t developed any buds yet.
Thank you
When Peter wears his Hawaiian shirt and talks about Zelkova, YOU WILL LOSE CONTROL COMPLETELY 🤣🤣🤣
Like this vidio👍👍
Zelkova are one of the most beautiful bonsai species.
Dear Mr. Chan, thank you for your frequent videos. I enjoy them very much, learn a lot and - most of all experience them as very calming and relaxing. Do you keep your tests and findings from the mentioned experiments in some kind of log or diary or are you remembering it all? Thanks again. Stay safe!
Wear your left glove Peter, we don’t want you fingerless! 🤟
Super video, dommage que c est pas en français
still wanna know who did you got too the point to buy your own nursery etc? back in the days?
No one gave me any money - Nursery was bought relatively cheap although I had to take a big loan; and interest rate was 15% back in 1986. I did 2 jobs for 3 years before I could give up my London job. My wife and I worked hard on our own and we could not afford to employ anyone until we had been here for 4 years. So nothing happens without hard work. Looking back, I would not have accepted money from anyone even if they offered it to me. I am the sort of person who doesn't like accepting money from anyone. Everything we have achieved is from sheer hard work. Even now - when customers visit the nursery and see me sweeping the floor - they say to me "You must be mad sweeping your own floor", but that is ME and my work ethic !! So please dont ask me again who gave me the money to buy a nursery. Its is sheer guts, hard work and a bit of luck. The "guy up there" has looked after me and my family.
@@peterchan3100 i think the commenter above ment to ask how you got it not who gave it to you. But great life story and work ethic!
@@peterchan3100 O no Peter i didn't ask if you borrowd or used loan money to buy it, sorry if it came over like i ask that. I ment the part you said you worked 2 jobs really hard with your wive and i really love your thinking: 4years straight on your own grown, sweeping etc. I really amire your work ethic, i am from a young generation and can only wish i have that kind of ethics! How old where you when you bought the place? I am 27 and just in my 6 month of bonsai but i really love your nursey and would be a dream to have one in my life.
@@peterchan3100 I am from the netherlands so not native english writer/speaker my bad
@@klm20079 - Your English is very good. In fact most Dutch people have good command of English.
I have a small zelcova that is indoors. When I brought it home it exploded with growth undee grow lights. So I pruned it a couple months later. It’s been a couple months since I pruned it and I cannot get a new bus to stay alive. A bud will pop, develop 2-4 new small leaves, then it’s like it burns up. I’ve tried it under grow lights and bright window. Help!

How often should you water the tree?
As often as it’s needed depending on the size of the pot, the time of it year and the weather. Usually it’s once a day during the growing season, but the basic rule it’s not to let the soil dry out. Even overwatering can easily become a problem if there’s bad drainage.
What's the difference between Zelcova Serrata and Zelcova Sinica?
I got 31-32 rings/years :)
I thought so.
@@peterchan3100 we need a better picture :)
How do you germinate zelkova serrata seeds and the best months to?
put them in the fridge by themselves for about 2 months (basically simulating winter), they can be sown immediately after under a controlled warm indoor environment or just plant them in february-april outdoors
Ok thank you so much.
