Yeah the engelmann sounds like the ultimate all rounder. The red is certainly awesome if you need that intensity to stand out in a crowd. Both beautiful instruments.

What is the smnall black thing he has over the bass strings behind the nut? Plectrum holder ?

Most likely it's a little strap to keep the strings from buzzing above the nut.

The second one reminds me of my Gil Fern x bracing. :)

the five tone bar has more dimension but both are relatively dead compared to Dave Harvey's Gibsons and why not support American luthiers with decades of experience compared to Asians who are incredibly underpaid? Sorry, but Marshall is all puffery and nothing he says doesn't better apply to Gibson's current instruments. So why not save up a little extra money and buy the instrument that Northfield and the rest of the boutiquers are trying to replicate? I don't get it. Sorry, but they sound tinny.

Quality is about effort, materials, craftsmanship, and design, and sound. Not geography. The Gibsons have lost their appeal. Ill use my ears and fingers to inform my choice of mandolin. I have always hated the sentiment that you have to have the “real” thing in order to be validated as a musician. Its great marketing but bad for musicians and bad for music. Mike has just about as much street cred as anyone can. His endorsement of Northfield doesnt go unnoticed. Gibson can go the way of Harley Davidson, golf, clothing irons , and paper napkins. Let the mellinials kill them off slowly, dying with the boomers.
