At 3:40 ish.. Mike says something super important and it applies to a multitude of folks playing .. the learning process in soloing must go beyond the key of the song.. he nailed it with his impersonation of a break that really never broke out of the key.... Play through the song and with progression and your playing , fretboard knowledge and solos will get better.
My wife bought me a mandolin for Christmas ( I think it was her attempt at getting my to try something other than the banjo). I found Mike Marshall’s ArtistWorks beginner course free through my local public library. He really simplifies the fundamentals in manageable segments that are not overwhelming. I encourage anyone who’s interested to check it out.

For anyone who might think that their hands are too big to play mandolin, just take a gander at Mike's beefy mitts!
Gosh, Thank you a bunch for sharing, Mike you are great.
I agree, Mark. Wouldn't it be fun to hear Mike and Don Julin and Jim Richter together? I think that would be a blast!
Landing lights. Love it!
"Salty Dog": First time hearing Mike Marshall sing. I really hope that it isn't the last!
Wow, this is a great video. Awesome instructions
I'm a Bach fan. Baroque fan. It's so much fun to play! Never can get enough exercises for techniques.
What model is that?
it's a Northfield artist model
acevedoa89 Thanks!
Played that instrument last week. Wow. www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=northfield+mandolins
@@robtsologtr curious if it was a 2 bar or 5 bar?
I'm reasonably sure he made a vague Spinal Tap reference there - "Really the greatest instrument of all" hah!
Wow. You make me feel like teenager at prom with uneducated hands. Lol. Thanks.
Stab at Sam Bush’s playing comes at 2:45 lol
this comment seems mean spirited and just not really true...Sam was a pioneer who was pushing the instrument forward probably before you were born
or they’re trying to pick Dawg music !!\m/ \m/
