Some of the best examples of Chris's virtuosity are where he's at ease like this, testing instruments. Wonderful video, I even like hearing him play as the Amtrak passes with that wistful horn and he builds louder phrases to match. The master playing the Master model. What a treat.
He’s like a kid in a candy store where the kid is a genius and does care about the candy just the sound. Amazing understanding of sound at it most intricacy and most likely the greatest mandolinist to ever live. Incredible. He was born to do this and he loves every Second of playing these Lohrs.
How many people have either smashed, set fire, or took their mandolins to a pawn shop after hearing him. Just screwing around on some Loars for fun is either sickening or inspiring to watch. Without a doubt the best I have ever heard.
God they sound so FAT and loud! I had the pleasure of playing the F5 that was once the personal instrument of Lloyd Loar and it was breathtaking. I wish I could play 1/10th as well as Chris...
@@chiprenner like absolutely mind blowing guitar, mandolins, banjos, whatever. It’s all there. I spent about 4 hours in the store and only left to save my finger tips and wallet
its almost to me that chris can play faster in his mind then his fingers but the result is a kind of jumping of time space? i do not know anyone who can play as naturally or as accurately as chris he is outside my experience , in a class by himself like a jimmi of the mandolin!
@@jonathanstotts amusingly, you think you're being witty, but you failed to notice that I didn't put forth my opinion, just the observation that one of the recognized living masters of the instrument highly values these particular instruments to the point he has purchased one, but not a Hutto. As to the value of Chris's opinion, he's managed to get a MacArthur Fellowship as a mandolinist, which is an absurd thing to even consider the possibility of.
elcidbob My friend, you may not have put out an opinion, but you have one, and probably appreciate it when it’s valued. Not witty, but standing up for my fellow man. I agree it’d be near impossible to top a Loar, but I took issue with putting another down. Peace.

The mandolins look like they are standing there yelling “play me”! “play me”!
Can’t help but think he’s like “damn that second one is a beast. Maybe I’ll buy it”
Such talent. Love to hear a master and Chris is exactly that.
"Chris Thile Plays Two 1927 Gibson Fern Mandolins at..."
me: "...Once. Please."

Love his passion and sheer excitement and joy with every instrument let alone his sickening skills lol
That last Fern was a BEAST!
Unbelievable. Just sitting down to do a little jamming. Terrific command of the instrument!
Chris Thile screwing around on a mandolin in a music store is better than anything I've ever played or will ever play.
I love just hearing him tune these instruments!
75701 is here with me in the UK :)
This man is a LEGEND.
Watching him sit with these mandos is a transcendent experience
Chris sure seems to like the second one ! It sounds different from the very first note !
He’s got more music in his pinky than most people in their whole body
He is on another planet! Crazy good talent!!
my next life needs to try out instruments like him, like this around the world.

Chris Thile is probably a top 100 mandolinist of his age group.
"Damn"....... Damn is right.
Wow.. the way he got that locomotive sound at roughly 6:00 is pure genius..
God they sound so FAT and loud! I had the pleasure of playing the F5 that was once the personal instrument of Lloyd Loar and it was breathtaking. I wish I could play 1/10th as well as Chris...
Chris screwing around on different Loahrs is better than any of us mere could obtain.
About $80k for a mint Fern like these 27’s. Signed Loars I believe are only 24-25 flower pots and yes about $150k in great shape nowadays.
Very nice Chris
6:19 hahahaha wowzers....
Chris played the blues... a train showed up
It's cool you get that lonesome train whistle near the end with his classic bluegrass riffing. :-)
Mando #2 was a cutter for sure! Gotta make that banjo player work for his keep!
He is the best in the whole world!
By a long way
The biggest instrument on the middle left is the mandocello aka octave mandola.
What's that last song!!??
5:48 is that a train giving approval?
mind blown...
the train starts jamming @ 5:40
Plastic surgery does indeed makes people look weirder and weirder. That analogy had me laughing.
This is the day that started the foreclosure process on Chris Thile's house.
Woah, what happened with that?
@@Jenken12 It was a joke. lol. I was saying he probably spent all of the money he had to get all of these great instruments!
Jeff Spear oh! Lol I get you. Good, I was like, oh no, he was doing so well
I could tell when he picked up that second mando, the one he said was pretty special, he was gonna play it bluesy
If anyone is considering the pilgrimage to Carters Vintage Guitars I HIGHLY recommend it.
like elderly instruments?

Great video. You guys really should look into room acoustics though - shame to have people playing all those amazing instruments on a concrete floor
They have acoustic rooms there this just the showroom and the easiest space to film

There’s probably north of 500k of Loars sitting in front of him.
"Damn." ;)
Badass.
Chris, do you match tune your courses or throw them slightly off?
Those mandolins are like puppies in a window - pick me! pick me!
Ferns frequently blow away Loars
I wish I hadn't been such a fuck up as a kid and kept practising music ^^
@@estebanb7166 what?
Hes pretty good at tuning it
Claire is a wonderful teacher, isn't it? Look how perfect you are now, best regards.
quentin tarantino plays mandolin? thats awesome!!!
Id put a HUTTO mandolin BEFORE any Lloyd Loar mandolin in existence.
The fact that Chris Thile isn't geeking out over one, but he is these Gibsons should tell you the value of your opinion.
elcidbob
Yeah. It's worthless!
Ζήτω η Ελλάδα! elcidbob It might tell us that Chris values the Gibsons more, but our Hutto friend’s opinion is as valuable as yours my man.

Please pardon my mind's wandering ... but Mr. Thile reminds me of Boris Johnson, who combs his hair with an electric egg beater. ;-)
Mandolins look cool basses look cool but unless you get a custom guitar you are stuck with the same put old shit
this makes no SENSE !!!
