Such an incredible sound and such a unique instrument I just wish I could get one for around $1000 instead of $4500 which is about what I paid for my car
Garcia Grisman Marshall they all have this certain California country blues grass style that is soo good I'd say it's the best which then in turn a crowd in unison shouts at me ELITIST!!!!
Not a fair demo. Mike would make a cigar box with electric bands sound incredible. He's a top shelf player and it sounds like these Northfields are up to the task. Beautiful!
It is very beautiful, thank you Mike :) :) Please help me ! Does anybody know the name of all songs which mike has played? Please if yes tell me , l will be very happy to learn them :):):)
@UCHZpus2TTpSRoMLC-UCWJNw The Guitar shaped Mandolin has a Name already, & it's called Mandolinetto so this could be thought of as an Octave Mandolinetto.
I think eastman makes some. I've found with mandolins, it is worth it to avoid the budget models. For $500, you can get a decent instrument that you won't be fighting and you could sell if you waved and not lose much
I agree with Juney Shober, don't know him but agree with his thought/s. "If you buy a $2.00 hammer soon you will have to go buy a $20.00 hammer and you will have spent $22.00 plus your time for something you should have brought in the first place." Daddy always said, "only used good tools". If you can find a $20.00 hammer on sale some placer for cheap then YES jump on it but stay away from junk tools and my instruments are my tools. The sermons over, you can wake up and go home now!!!
I have an Amber maple body Northfield , 5,400 . It nice , and its opening up ,....but it's an OM and not a bouzouki , and not quite as easy on the fingers.

Mike's playing is impressive as usual/expected. The instrument is equally impressive sounding... ...but it doesn't look anything like a mandolin. I'll be selecting something a bit more traditional.
What a glorious sound, so live and punchy, warm, a little growly. So cool.
Heart of Kentucky
Real good playing Mike Marshall. You are one of the greats
I use to hear you out and about, mostly at festivals. Katie.
Beautiful, wonderful instrument! Just wish they weren't so dang expensive.
Here lemme buy one for ya
@@mattiafioravanti8475 Good idea. The Octave Mandolin actually sounds like a Guitar because of its size.
If you were one of those who build them you’d think different...
You should look into Hora Octave Mandolins. Not as beautiful of a sound surely but a good first step.
The classic. Music was dreamy . ❤
Such an incredible sound and such a unique instrument

Could get an Eastman and revoice the top
Wow very sweet indeed ...takes me away on a soundtrack vision back in time yet still in the present.
Wow ... what a fun demo . Love the sound / timbre and the playing so sweet .
Beautiful! Beyond words.

Love the Bach Mike! When will you record that suite.
Beautiful Bach
Can someone tell me the beautiful tune he plays from 00:38 to 1:53? I've loved it since I first came across this video but never known the name
Sounds like a very beautiful version of the old home place
Oliver Campion ..someday soon?
I have no idea, but 1:16 sounds like the bridge from Steel Panther's "Girl From Oklahoma" lol
sounds like half way between old home place and amazing grace with some IV>iv thrown in
so it's probly something else...
Pretty sure he just made it up
Beautiful sounding instrument, great volume and, as he said, sustained tone...well presented.
I miss my lessons with this great man!
Quite simple stunning sound and well played.. OK I guess Mike could make a lightpole sound good, but this is really something special. Thanks
I decided not to learn Traditional mandolin, but that Octave is beautiful, I might give it a shot
Hahahaha I decided not eat an apple but that pear it looks good hahahha YES
does anyone know the first song he plays on this video. please post a comment if you know.
So beautiful

I don't think I'm the only one who has come back to listen to that first song
Not only the player, also the builders are magicians!
big rich sound. beautiful.
Beautiful ..
It is very beautiful, thank you Mike :) :)
Please help me !
Does anybody know the name of all songs which mike has played?
Please if yes tell me , l will be very happy to learn them :):):)
2nd one was Bach, Cello suite. I think Prelude
Nice playing!
Nothing like this in the UK ?
Not too shabby!
Is Northfield considering a mandola model ?
@UCHZpus2TTpSRoMLC-UCWJNw
The Guitar shaped Mandolin has a Name already, & it's called Mandolinetto so this could be thought of as an Octave Mandolinetto.
Smooth as butter...
Having a tough time finding left handed mandolins. Any ideas where i might be able to get a decent entry level instrument in a left handed version?

What is the song e plays at 2:10?? I hear it everywhere
Bach Cello Suite No. 1 :)
Thank you. May Harambe bless u
Bach's Cello Suite no. 1 Prelude. I just found out too after hearing it everywhere and trying to figure it out.
I really love this Octave Mandolin because it's modeled after my Archtop Electric Guitar.
Gotta get me one, outstanding 👍
Is it tuned to the violin and where would I get one
It's tuned the same way and you can find them in music stores.
What song is Mike playing at 00:38s ?
The Tennessee Waltz
sorry wrong answer
Hello !
What is its scale and fret number ?
... are you ready to make one 10 strings ?
Regards

@@okiwatashi2349 A 10 String version can wait.
This is my favorite type of 8 string guitar.
This should be called 8 string Irish tenor guitar instead of octave mando.
I wonder if he could play a tune on a old barbed-wire fence back home on the family farm?
I WANT ONE OF THESE. Great playing. GDAE?
Yes
Same turning, just an octave lower.
@@Rick_Cleland That puts it into a Tenor range.
@@Rick_Cleland They should have 10 String versions tuned CGDAE.

Hello! What a beautiful sound! Which tuning you use the mandolins ?
Thank you for your attention and feedback!
GDAE is standard mandolin tuning, the same as a violin. An octave mandolin is one octave below.

very impressive.
Is Mike playing the Maple or Mahogany version in this video? Thanks!
Mahogany version.

I need one!
Lovely

Is it tuned like a viola
Octave mandolins like this are tuned GDAE usually, like a regular mandolin, but an octave lower. The mandola however is tuned like a viola, CGDA.
Epic!
I do need one. LOL!
Some Greek or Italian songs would be brilliant on this thing.
