  • What's happening, folks! I'm back with another Siouxsie & the Banshees reaction from their 1982 album A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, and this time we listen to the dark, haunting, and quite terrifying "Obession," a tune that plays out like an Edgar Allen Poe story (though the "direction" of the obsession seemed to switch or become more complicated as the tune played out, as at least based on what I caught the first time through). So join me for some more dark Siouxsie. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

Great spooky song.....yet beautiful. The drums sound like footsteps following somebody. The strings at the end sound like a mind unraveling. Too long between Siouxsie reactions....maybe I'll wait a few months and watch all at once for the full Kiss in the Dreamhouse reactions. It's one that deserves a complete listen as a whole.

There's something evanescent and haunting about "Obsession", with all those sounds coming out of nowhere, whether it's the sharp guitar chords, the eerie breaths, the chiming bells or the heart-rending string quartet. It's a piece that's both disturbing in its lyrics and music, but also enchanting with Siouxsie's smooth, cajoling voice. A troubling masterpiece !

I'm glad you're reacting to tracks off of Kiss in The Dreamhouse. 👍🏻I always found it to be one of their most interesting albums along with Hyena.
From what I remember reading, Siouxsie wanted quite a different sound on this album, especially coming right after Juju.

Love love love this song. So dark and a bit claustrophobic.

What a fantastic track. Apparently inspired by what actually happened to a friend of a friend of Siouxsie's who became obsessed with a neighbour and broke in and left some of their hair (not the hair on their head!) as a sign of their love. So a tale of obsessive "love" - even when they are told to get out they see it as another "sign", "a game between you and me, divine test for us two". Yet, they seems to have some awareness - "It's all in my imagination". The final verse seems to imply the person has become so deranged as to think the victim is the one obsessed and hints at a deadly outcome. It's the whole atmosphere of the track that totally sells it - Siouxsie's vocals high in the mix so with headphones on it sounds like she is there, whispering in your ear, the bells and distorted guitars, the strings (the melody at one point almost sympathetic) and the Psycho string stabs - it all creates a really uneasy, disturbed feeling of being enveloped in the madness.
The singer and violinist Lisa Germano has a track on her "Geek The Girl" album which is equally (if not more) disturbing, told from the point of view of the victim of obsession (she herself had a stalker) which incorporates a distressing real life 911 call of a woman with a man breaking into her home. It's a very uneasy and sobering listen.

I had read the song is about Siouxsies' ex who was also the bands manager, who was quite upset about Sioux and Budgie Perhaps that story is apocryphal lol

Hi Matt! Even though I've known this song for 30 years, the part "Then I remember it's a game between you and me - A divine test for us two" only just now makes me think of "Lila", the concept of all of existence being a divine play in Hinduism. The strings do have a slight Indian/Eastern feel to me as well, similar to the Banshees' later songs "Shooting Sun" & "Kiss Them For Me", so maybe I'm onto something, or maybe "it's all in my imagination" ;) Hope you are well Matt - sorry for being absent lately, I had a bunch of things to take care of!

I liked this a lot, in fact. 👍 Another female voice that I enjoyed, too (or that doesn't bother me at all, to be more precise). Very cool!
Dark and creepy are apparently things I am into, as I have come to understand. 😁
You were terrified, but Lucca wasn't bothered.😸 Apparently, the song gave her no nightmares. Can’t wait to hear her opinion, at some point! 😅

I'm happy you caught up and saw this one, baby. I figured you would enjoy its darkness. And indeed, Lucca owes us a full report on her thoughts here! 😸😘❤
