As soon as you get in the vehicle, you have to turn the key to the on position to allow control of the vehicle. If you put your foot on the brake pedal before you turn the key to the on position, the motor will cut out. It is an anti-theft feature.

I have an older DesignTech model 23721. from the 90's. Does anyone know if it is usable with vehicles of today, or earlier 2000+ cars? It was a gift that I never used. I was somewhat intimidated about installing, never used.

RF15T1 said it perfectly. The key has to be in before you can start driving. Otherwise, the engine will turn off.
