Jeep WJ Long Arm Suspension 4" Lift Install from IRO Grand Cherokee

- This is my new project vehicle, a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with only 100,000 miles on it.
The goal is to make a reliable daily driver that would also be fairly capable as an off road rig for as cheap as possible. I sold my truck for $5,000 and bought this thing for $4,000 leaving a little room for improvements right out of the gate. I started with the Iron Rock Offroad 4" lift and some rock sliders. Next I bought some Hankook Dynapro M/T tires size 265/75 R16.
This video shows the install of the suspension upgrades and sets up the maiden voyage of the Jeep into the wilds of Death Valley...
• Off Road Tour of Death...
Stay tuned for part 2 coming soon of the shakedown trip! Авто/Мото
Damn wish I can find one of those, thats this clean with those low miles, for that price.
Wow, that was very helpful, thanks. I've experienced the open diff's on this model and would love to upgrade that at some point!
Cool, glad to see ya offroad !!!! Some great adventures out there. Can't wait for part 2
good to see a new video! Awesome as always!
Ya, you can use it. Those were the first video i saw on your channel and then subscribed and since then im happy with your videos. Keep the updating - Jacoby
Nice thing about this Jeep is its not over done, it's still practical and in good taste as far as appearance goes
I like the look of the WJ with a 4” lift. I too am installing an Iron Rock Off-road 4” lift on my 04 WJ, along with a few other goodies IRO sells.
The WJ is such an awesome vehicle!
You are so right...already dinged both front and rear diffs on this trip...lots of learning to do. The rock rails are Iron Rock Offroad that I bought from CLS Ofroad, I hope to not need them but if feels good to have them.
That is soooo true! I appreciate it a ton too.
First, yes more diff protection is necessary...two days ago I peeled the lower lip off of the rear diff cover and it now leaks...was stuck for 2 1/2 hours on an obstacle and it was an ugly drag fest getting it off.
Second, the Dynapro's absolutely rock! They look better than my friends BFG's, were extremely capable on/off road and very stable in the rain at 45 psi. They are slightly louder on the highway but $40 cheaper per tire...easy decision for me to make again.
Thanks for the advice too!
Thanks! Why didn't somebody tell me how much fun these things are!!!
As far as the gears...I'm not sure but the tires are the Hankook Dynapro M/T and have been absolutely fantastic for the price.
The kit came with brake line mounting extenders but that's it...no other extentions. I haven't experienced any of the dash gremlins you mentioned yet but can't seem to reset the speedo to adjust for the new tires because of some abs nonsense.
Ooooooh, I see what you did there...and I love it! Can I use that later???
The Maverick is safe and sound over at Fennel's shop and now that I've got my daily driver taken care of, I hope to get back on that thing again!
Jason, love the WJ... glad to see the 31.6" tires on the factory wheels.
It was a fun rig... I miss that thing.
Don't worry...I've seen the 2.5" kit do wonders for these things!
The Quadra-TracII has a clutch pack in the transfer case that normally distributes power to only the rear wheels unless it senses slip. It can distribute 100% of the power to the front or the rear axle or distribute it accordingly depending on traction conditions. It has open diffs front and rear. The Quadra-Drive features the same transfer case but also has what Jeep calls Vari-Lok limited slip diffs. The idea is that at any time 100% of the torque can be directed to just one wheel if needed.
cool i have a same jeep w j 2001 in a black nice job
I actually really wanted the 4x4 version of my old truck but couldn't afford a low enough mileage version. This is my first Jeep so we'll see what happens!
I have an 02 WJ overland edition with the 4.7 HO. The engines been rebuilt and bored and stroke out to a 300. This video is exactly what I'm looking for as far as trail mods
Yeah? Did it need any reprogramming ???
You are so lucky with friends like that.
long arm kit and sway bar with no disconnects???
Damn must be nice to live down there in the dry parts! I live up in northern Vermont and it is so hard to find a clean jeep and if you doo people want an arm and a leg haha oh well. Stay safe
Man I wish I could afford this set up for my WJ, it looks awesome! Unfortunately I'm going to be stuck with a 2-2.5'' haha
Cool video. Funny though how it went from driveway install demo on little stands to magically being on a lift.
makes me miss my jeep xj
"That don't scare me. Alex cut them right off"
😂
Awesome thanks!
This WJ has the Quadra-TracII. I'm new with these...how are they different?
Nice job
Thanks!
Every time you call a Jeep a car, God kills a kitten.
great and awsome video bro. im planning to buy a 1999 to 2003 second hand jeep the same as this and do the same like what you've did.
you need a flash done to correct for the larger diameter tires. any performance shop that does ANY kind of tuning will be able to take care of that.
The 4" Critical Path lift retails for about $1350 and the tires were $190 each.
that dude was pushing on the middle of the torque wrench....must like to do things the hard way.
LMFAO so true
Plus it does not torque properly. If he went back and grabbed the handle and tried again. He would see his mistake. There is a handle for a reason.
Glad I could help! One thing is the Quadra-Drive may not be a good option for your modified set-up as it can be a little testy with different tire sizes as I have found out first hand. I don't know what the options are for your exact set up, but if possible I would put in a rear locker on your WJ. That should be plenty for all of your traction needs!
very nice jeep i have the same one
Good to see you getting into the offroad side of driving :) I currently have three Jeeps, and two previous Jeeps. Looking forward to the next video :)
What gears did your WJ come with? And I take it those are a 265/75R16?
I think the new VMI 3.0 is really going to awsome in the new Grand.
But you might want to check out the Power Wagon.
I wonder if this would be money well spent for my 01 wj. It's only a 4.0 straight 6 RWD
Could you by chance link the after market exhaust you used with the WJ?
Like that car going through th workshop on 2 wheels was normal XDD people drinking coffee, working casually XD
Over-land vehicle... new term for my too, but I will be throwing that one around now, lol.
How much after the entire kid and new tires and all other modification, did it all cost? Not including the $4,000 initial Jeep buy.
Your WJ Jeep is in a product pic on the Accutune website. Lol
Hey Jason... Will the long arms allow me to move the front axle forward a little? I'm trying to stuff some pretty big tires.... I don't mind trimming to bumper but I rather not trim metal
About to purchase this lift! did it level out the vehicle at all or did it still have that stock rake?
no problem, been there done that-but i didn't realize it 'til i was back on the black top hours later.!
as for the level of sound with the tires, that's not (too much of) a concern when you're looking for traction when traversing trails. when you mentioned their performance in the rain, was that on or off road?
Wow, nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
did you have any problems with the awd transfer case
Was a front drive shaft conversion need for this lift kit?
what size tires were you running in this video and where there any clearance issues when flexing
Hey can you tell me what is the consumption with new lift and 32'' tires? and if you had to put spacers for that tires
Nice jeep what size dynapros are those?
did you have to change the front drive shaft and do you still have the original 247 transfercase? Also do you have the noted lifted WJ death wobble at highway speeds?
Did you have any issues with death wobble?
you did lenghten your brake and axle breather lines... right??? great car the only chrysler glitch is the occassional loss of dash/ecu communicatoin
Did this lift kit include everything besides the steering stabalizer? also where can I find this kit if so. Is it recommended for the 4.0 v6?
Yeah, the kit came totally complete and works for both engines. Go to Iron Rock Off road dot com or call them...they helped me on the phone for an hour before I ordered all this stuff! Good luck and get off roading.
Hi Jason! Great videos :-) thanks... I guess its a bit of stupid question, but how is the evasive maneuvers after the lift? (i hope you will never have to do one) ... but what do you experience?
The Jeep handled great with that suspension lift. I would travel up a windy canyon road back and forth to work and it felt competent.
Keep your sway bars connected and get a HD rear sway bar and it should handle pretty good, keep in mind you are changing the geometry of the suspension so it will not handle like stock.
Are they 32 or 33in tires
Yeah, the more we were getting up and down of the ground...the more I kept looking at the lift just a few feet away and ended up in the air for a much easier install! Hey, as we get older, sometimes we get smarter.
jeep grand cherokee wj the best viechle ever made
Do you know how much it was for everything you got? Parts, labor etc.?
I think it would cost about $400 to install this kit but my friends Elia and Alex helped me out for this video!
I like the Grand Cherokee man, i have one myself and look to get a lift soon. When completing the back lift did you take the leaf springs out?
These don't have leaves. It's coils on all 4.
I have the same one
how much was the lift kit/suspention?
I'm looking to buy the same lift to put on my 02 grand cherokee overland
ryan 1977 me to
There is no new control arms in the rear ? Doesn't it make the rear wheels very close to the wheel well ?
It's a 3 link
Love the video. What song is that in the end?
Thanks!
+Yoyo81828 I'm not sure, I bought a bunch of CD's from Smartsound for my Sonic Fire music program and just pick through that stuff.
you'll actually want to get a set of sliders for those diffs as well (not just some fancy-smancy covers). Jeeps are easy to get off-road equipment for, 'cause everyone & their cousin trails with one.
i see you guys got some rain while you were out........how did those Dynapro's handle the wet weather? been looking @ them, but wondered what their on/off-road characteristics were like.
How much did the lift kit and tires cost?
Why no swaybar disconnects? It would make it much more capable offroad.
probably didn't come with the kit
Probably don’t want to disconnect that on a Daily driver
Coming soon...to a computer near you! And maybe to Idaho eventually!
Awesome! I wanna do this to my 99 Cherokee but parts are not avalible here in Bahrain. Shipping is costly too
Find someone locally to make it
If you're going to be wheeling it you should consider aftermarket differential covers. The stock ones are easy to punch a hole in with a rock. Those rock rails look nice. What brand are they?
Iron Rock offroad
@0:51 THE HELL!!! LOL
What size tires?
Can someone who owned both Xterra, the newer one and this Jeep,, which one you liked more and which one has better ride, reliability and off road capability? I want to buy one that is why i ask, thank you in advance.
My brother has an Xterra, and I have this Jeep WJ, mine has no lift on it yet but we went off roading together and he said mine was more capable than his Xterra because of the solid front and rear axles, he said it was better for maintaining traction on uneven surfaces and articulating over rocks, another thing to consider is that lift kits and accessories for the Xterra are more expensive and not as prevalent as they are for Jeep 👍 have fun, happy wheeling
hows the maverick thats been bitten by the snake?
Any thoughts on putting a lift. On my 02 grand Cherokee. It's the quadra drive.
Iron Rock Off road is the place to go!
question: the passenger side front control arm... flex joint fwd or to the rear?
+The TSF Channel The flex joint goes to the rear or the mount at the transfer case crossmember.
Thanks, man. We got it. Joe @ IRO was no help.
Can someone please teach Alex how to properly use a torque wrench? ?
At the end he used a hand socket to tighten it all up.. why not air socket?
Seemed like the thing to do at the time.
I recently got a 2002 grand Cherokee and I've already decided to put a 4 inch lift but I don't know what size tire, what size are your tires?
These are 32's and worked pretty good
What about labor cost? Thanks.
265/75R16?
Driveshaft upgrade? I plan on doing a 3inch or a 4 and know the driveshaft must be replaced. front, rear or both? I have the quadra trac 02' V8
Yes, I did the drive shaft upgrade as well. Front and Rear
Yep, your front is good to go. If your going to go rear also might as well change to a 242HD T/case. Ditch's the all wheel drive and has a larger 32 spline rear output shaft.
would you be able to jump it?
Can you put a lift on a 2000 awd Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is thier any out thier that work?
William Roy you can lift almost anything, just remember you get what you pay for.
Does this Jeep have the Qadra-Drive or the Quadra-Trak2 four wheel drive system?
In another video I read he said Quadra trac 2
Can you weld the plates to the frame instead of drilling and bolting them
Yes

2 questions please:
Is this kit a 3-arm set up?
What tires are those?
I have a 99 Limited, Red, that I'm wanting to get rid of. Basically the one in the video at the beginning, but a different color. 158k miles. PM me if you want more details.
The rocksilder are homemado? Can you make video about this? Tks!
In another video he said or I read they're from Kevin's Off Road
Wait no, I meant they're from Iron Rock Offroad
Have you had any problems with getting death wobble I been reading online it's common problem with the wj when lifted 4 inch or more
ryan 1977 NO PROBLEMS AT ALL....EVER! This rig is stable at 85 down the highway and actually was a blast to drive fast on twisty mountain roads. My advice is to get the thicker rear sway bar.
I planned on that from watching your video and adding the adjustable control arms
autoedit what kind of stabilizer did u use? would u recommend changing driveshaft with this kit?
Are you running any spacers? How did it affect the mileage I read about 3-4 mpg drop is that true or is it even worse?
I didn't run spacers on this rig.
Ok thanks.
Did you see what the "experienced offroader" is driving :)
What are the tires that you put on the Grand Cherokee
Hankook Dynapro M/T tires size 265/75 R16
autoedit
im going to run the same size on a falken rocky mountian, and i want to know what you had to trim on to run your tires
Lyokofan24 With the 4" IRO kit I didn't have to trim anything to get the 32's on there.
How much does a lift like this cost? Not including the tires. Thanks!
1000 plus for parts, not including install by professionals.
+Dan Hall Thank you much buddy, I just purchased a 99" V8 can't wait to lift it
