  • The ancient stories of The Arabian Nights have entertained all mankind down the centuries. Abounding in wisdom, bawdiness and humour they contain much that is now part of the world's literary heritage.
Translated by Sir Richard Burton (1821-1890) and edited by P.H. Newby.

Sweet bada bada bada. I've tried to physically read the Burton translation..I found it a flowery read poorly interpretated. The 1 with the scalloped pages and stitchings is far better translation...this is the old old old one. ..get the chance read the new 1..it's a better translation..less archaic to Anglican ears ..the Burton 1 is far bawdier....I like that....I can finally finish the Burton translation now. Kudos

It's a story full of stories with several of the stories having stories in them. What on earth is going on? My brain is melting.

Wikipedia warned me this story has lots of baudy sexual content.
There's plenty of racism and sexism too but that's to be expected from something this old.
*Example*: look up the word "futter" (not the German word for 'feed')
It means literally "to F*ck" . This is indeed a very raunchy book lol. I like it so far.

It seems inauthentic to have so much of a foreign literative work translated in such a way that it rhymes in english.
. How much of the original meaning and word choice was lost in order to make it fit an English rhyme scheme.
. They even quote "the poet" and "the bard" several times. Is this Shakespeare? What would Shakespearean quotes be doing in an ancient Arabic work?

There is a more recent translation by Husain Haddawy that is much more authentic. I am actually assigned that version for a class but there are no audio books for that one so i’m just listening to this and then going back and checking on the differences later lmao

Very true. Inuendos inside jokes can never be translated, yet they can be explained. Even states of mental being do no translate at all.

@@javedsultan4830 That's obvious. Thank you. But it's beside the point Javed. All I'm saying is that in this audiobook they say something like "as the bard once said". And usually when people say "the bard", they're referring to Shakespeare. So you see why I brought it up. ....chill out a little and read what you're responding to before going off next time. 🖖

I don't know what I expected but that all women apparently are cheating "monsters" who even force men to have sex with them (The wife of the genie) was not it. And that one of the men being cheated on then decides to sleep with a different virgin girl every night, and kill her the next day "because all women are wretchedly evil",
because he thinks that's the most logical thing is whack.

Thank you for this crappy translation. I know it's not your fault but many translations are done with an orientalist bias.

What a shame you couldn't be bothered to have a voiceover director. Part two was marred by misreadings such as "all the live long day" with "live" rhyming with "jive" instead of "give", and the bull who "lowed loud" being read as if he had "loud loud", when "lowed" should rhyme with "road". Sloppiness doesn't speak of intelligence or a quality production.

After killing his wife, the poor little confused thing says, "how could she this do this deed by me?!
How could she work her own death?!" No, dude, YOU did that.
Victim-blaming and too dated for me. I was hoping to like it, but a few minutes in and it's already a huge turnoff. I don't know if ultimately I'm supposed to like him or dislike him, but I dislike him and have lost interest in the character.

Not that I agree with death for adultry, the societal standard and law was death for adultry. Is like if someone commited a crime knowing consiquence gets jailed, the judge ask how could they do that to themselves and you go and quote that's victim blaming... He was the victim here despite. the execution was the lawful punishment for her crime. Gota look at the morality relativley. and you don't have to like the dude at all the whole premise is out of this single betrayle he goes on a slaughter.

Adultery in middle eastern culture since ancient pagan times... the sentence was death for men and women. This changed to just women however 🙄
Even in Christianity adultery/lust is a deadly sin. Lol.
She did walk into death. She slept with a slave in the kings house knowing the punishment for adultery is execution even for commoners married to commoners.
It's like being surprised you're arrested for robbery.
