- Rare footage of Alice In Chains featuring Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart and Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan performing "Rooster" at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Etess Arena in Atlantic City, New Jersey on March 10, 2006. AIC was opening for Heart, and during the rehearsals Ann and Nancy saw William singing "Rooster" and asked him to sing it for the broadcast (see: • William Duvall on How ... ). Following this concert, DuVall became Alice In Chains' co-lead vocalist and recorded his first album with the band in 2009, Black Gives Way to Blue.
Line-up:

For everyone asking why Ann didn't sing lead vocals: it was HER CHOICE to let William sing it instead. AIC was opening for Heart that day (if it wasn't obvious by Jerry's speech in the beginning: "We welcome the opportunity to come out here and play with you guys ON THEIR SHOW"), and during the rehearsals Ann and Nancy saw William singing and asked him to sing for the broadcast.

ABSOLUTELY! Ann Wilson is an all time legend & a class act! love her! No one is trying to outdo anyone here
Duff!! My god, the good man is everywhere!!
Absolutely right. Just amazing musicians here all serving the song. No competition or egos.
I was at this show. It was made for TV so they did several of the songs twice. Phil Anselmo did a song with AIC too.
@Philip Holmes me too...I've seen AIC with William and he's damn good...a very worthy vocalist for the band
Like I said earlier, he crushes this song
It hurts to sometimes hear AIC music without Layne, but it warms my heart to see the guys smiling and just so happy to be playing together. They deserve the elongated career and I'm happy William is with them.
Layne was great but, unfortunately his addiction made it hard to watch. It was sad watching Layne at times.
Jerry has to be the classiest and most genuine rockstar there is. Always gives credit and you never hear him stirring the pot.
I mean you got Ann and Nancy Wilson and Duff playing with him, that speaks for itself
I think this performance is what brought Jerry back to life, and I think he realized it at the end with that smile.
I know this has been said a million times, Layne was an incredible singer, sad he's gone, but DuVall is also fantastic, couldn't think of anyone else to help keep the band going. He's got a great voice.
Yep. I used to get so pissed when he first joined and people would just shit on him. I am an AIC super fan. I have seen them live so many times. With Layne and with William. Layne had a better vocal range and when he was on point there wasn’t a better singer to be heard. Unfortunately I saw a few shows where he was obviously high and couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. William has blown the roof of the joint EVERY time. He’s been the lead more years then Layne at this point. Love his sound.
Did he sing for any other band before Alice In Chains?
I met Layne working backstage at lollapalooza many years ago. The guy had a great voice for sure.
@@alexupton8769 Comes with the Fall
@@alexupton8769 also with Jerry's solo work.
Underrated songwriter and guitarist. Jerry is a genius 🤘
I second that, his guitar was like a second voice, it added such depth and emotion to their songs, he always played the right notes.
I say this everyday!!
I love his voice as well.
Whenever I say something to my buddy about Layne Staley he never forgets to mention Jerry Cantrell and how he is a fucking genius, and I agree but I argue with him just to piss him off. Cantrell is a God.
He is not underrated man lol. You think you get signature amps from Friedman by being "underrated?"
Look at Jerry's face just lighting up there at the end. Thank god AIC was reborn. These amazing musicians have so much talent and integrity, I need them.
Duquezaable it’s just not the same without layne though
I hear you man. Glad to see it. Cant imagine the life Jerrys had. Hes gotta be here and still live all the sh*t thats happened. He deserves to smile
Duquezaable Me to
They're making amazing albums and shows nowadays. I've been lucky to see them twice this year. I'm happy. And I need them as well.
@@Rocknroll-ig5iy it never will be. you either choose to accept it or not
What I like about their new singer is he doesn't try to sound like Layne
Yup
Yet, you can still hear Layne in some of their songs. I think William DuVall was an excellent choice as Layne's successor
We doesnt need to, he sounds amazing on his own.
I believe the long haired dude is the songwriter..
and yet he can get close when needed i think. Has a amazing voice IMO
I love Williams voice and singing style.. it’s filled with passion and it’s his own..
Mad respect still for William stepping in and helping give AIC a new breath of life. Impossible shoes to fill and he's established his place in the band with style. This was a band that deserved to keep making music and I'm forever grateful they have. And as always, God bless Layne and Mike.
In full agreement
Sim
Totally agree 💯
Right on!
DuVall did his thing though. They picked a great vocalist for Layne. RIP baby
Layne was amazing. But so is William. Either love the band or don't. William isn't trying to replace Layne, but he can nail those songs, and also sings the new shit. William is great.
He's a lot cleaner Might take me a while to get used to it All good
@@TheHortoncrow finally, someone with some common sense about William's place in the band, I love him, he fits great and he had a long history with the band prior, no better fit.
@@Haste444 amen brother! William is being William and William is badass
@@TheHortoncrow He also plays amazing guitar. Gives Jerry more room to solo !!
My favorite “grunge” era band. They still rock. I love that they’re friends with Ann and Nancy. Fantastic performance.
That moment at 4:15 when Ann touches Jerry's face! Its like a mom giving a blessing... you got this, rock on my boys!
We will never get Layne back but William has a strong voice and his own singing style and he sounds good
@mikedoesseo So true--it wasn't till after Layne died that I realized how much of the singing in AIC was done by jerry
I’m really glad that AIC didn’t hang it up after Layne’s passing. And in my eyes, Layne was the greatest singer ever. I named my only son after him. But honestly, it’s still a real treat to see them live, and I truly love the post-Layne albums. Layne could never be “replaced”, but their story wasn’t over.
Well said and recognized 👍
jerrys smile was like he looked relieved and happy and finally at peace w layne being gone. Gone but never FORGOTTEN
This is what a band healing in real-time looks like.
The Wilson sisters helped show AIC, in their own language, what healing could look like; Ann insisted on William singing lead.
YOU KNOW HE AIN'T GONNA DIE!
Jerry' s guitar sounds amazing...
Andrei Indru as always 🤩
Why does Sean Kinney look like John Wick here?😂😂😂
He does! 🤣
He looks like a guy that you don't mess with.
It's his stunt double in the movie havnt you all heard about this yet🤷♂️
Whatever you do, dont hurt his dog 😆
Legend has it he killed a man who touched his kit...and everyone that man knew.
I had chills at 5:25 dude
Jerry shouting is like "we are fucking BACK"
This performance is soooo intimate and filled with passion and love. God, I hope Layne's happy seeing this performance. This is for him.
Seeing Jerry, Mike, and Sean smiling at each other. They must've missed performing so much.
And William did amazing.
I'm trying hard not to cry.
@Stew Daly he meant that it seemed like that’s how he felt when he shouted it, as opposed to being what he actually said.
*She/him/they/thine/thus implied it in the shout
The smile on his face at the end
I didn’t try to stop crying. This grabbed my heart.
I did cried. Amazing.
Rooster is a song about Jerry's father in Vietnam. Like many dudes from the 60's, their lives were totally changed by Nam. Try to imagine what it would be like to have a father who went off to the Far East to fight a war the people didn't want. Many (most) came home (if they were lucky) changed men. Changed still in 2020. They saw stuff we can't imagine. Incredible song.
My dad was in that war. Said when he got home the vets got no respect, as noted in the song.
Vietnam. No doubt. How about this.? There are many who fought in Afghanistan 17-18 yrs ago who had unborn children or toddlers at home and those kids are old enough to fight and who may be there today. Pretty crazy.
A guy who went to my hi school came back in a body back, that was 1964 before anybody knew where Vietnam was on the map, he was a Gunner on a helicopter
My father was a Vietnam vet. Grew up watching first hand the effect it had on him. Later in life I found myself part of the war in Iraq. This album came with me. This song has vastly more meaning to me that what it was written about.
@Michael O Callaghan yes it does, very sad
Layne is a vocal God to me, but I approve this version, 100%. Well done.
Vocal god and angel
So much respect for Duvall. Amazing singer, plus...when everyone sees AIC in concert, he knows what everyone is thinking.
The kid nails it outta the park, yet doesn't try and be Layne. Layne,......you are so missed, Noone ever sang with the heart of LS. :,0/ Hugs to anyone that needs it.
Duvall, you hit the ball outta the park. Thank you! Only the best is deserved!
Man that first album his howls were bloodcurdling lol
Truely unique i still havnt heard anything like that anywhere else cheers

2:31 ...🐓
I love that the Wilson sisters aren't afraid to get LOUD! Their version of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Awards was freaking amazing.
That performance gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it.
@@kimberlee440 must check it out
@@kimberlee440 the music is fantastic imo also
Layne was so soulful, took all them years to realize they need a brother to replace him. DuVall smashed this.
Yet Layne wasn’t a “brother” so there’s that. White cats have soul too my friend.
not replace. honor.
Jerry’s smile at the end gives me life.
It’s never the end until we let it be.
he sings the heart and soul of layne right there. I can feel layne' spirit on that stage. Like a cold breeze echoing through Duvall's vocals.
Yes!
Approved
How exactly does a breeze echo? Especially a cold one?
The only constant in our lives is change. Watching William DuVall, watching the look of satisfaction on Jerry's face, seeing the love in Ann and Nancy's face really makes this a very special moment for all AIC fans.
Lightning struck twice for AiC, two absolutely brilliant singers in the history of a single group. A++ stuff here.
William Duvall is the only other frontman capable of fronting Alice in Chains. Period. Don't care what anyone says or thinks. It's a fact.
ok Mr. DuVall here you make me feel goosebumps. You're carrying a heavy position my man, so much love for all of you
Its beautiful to see the real love that Ann & Nancy have for Jerry and the band.
I get chills when I watch this, It was the "renaissance moment" of a band that pulled itself up from a tragedy!!! Everyone could feel it on that stage.
Layne was an amazing singer but the genius of Alice in Chains has always been Jerry Cantrell. His vocal work with Layne was perhaps the best vocal pairing in rock history. But time presses on. Very happy Alice lives on and Jerry is in a good place.
Two absolutely legendary bands on the same stage, playing an absolutely legendary song together. Amazing.
Nice pfp Ghost RULES
Ann is a wonderful human being. Really loving, compassionate and cherishing person, She really loved Layne and Chris
I got good chills from Williams first "yeah you know he ain't gonna die"!
He had a very passionate vocal stress on it!!
Horns Up!
I saw Heart open for Queen back when Freddie was still alive, they rocked it!! And, Nancy is a great guitarist!!
Getting the Wilson Sisters to come and jam on your best track? Some good shit right there. Some Seattle rock royalty on that stage right there
Best track?? Not even
Not even close to be the best imo
I wouldn't say it's their best either.... but with AIC it's really a matter of opinion. They have a good dozen or so tracks you could consider their best.
For me it's a toss up between Would and Rotten Apple.
Old Man Doom they are very close with AIC !!
Ann Wilson has done backing vocals on a few of their studio albums from back in the day.
Layne’s spirit lives on.
God bless you Layne and Mike!
Thank you! Great people.. Keep going!
William Duvall isn't Layne Staley and not a Layne's wannabe. He's just a great singer and a very sweet person. I had the chance to meet him after one of his first concerts with the band here in Italy and he was the only one who stayed with us for a while signing autographs and taking some pictures with the fans. Chapeau!
Jerrys smile towards the end put a smile on my face
When I heard AIC was reforming with a new vocalist, I just assumed it was a sellout and ignored them. For years. What a huge, huge mistake. DuVall is great. The albums with him are all f-in awesome too. It’s hard to believe they found such a great replacement for Layne. He’s not Layne, of course, and he doesn’t try to be, but he fits in perfectly with the rest of the band and is perfect for Cantrell’s songs. What a glorious rebirth for this band - by far the greatest one to come out of the Seattle early 90’s scene.
Made the same mistake for some time totally ignored their albums post Layne for some time thinking it will not be that good as before, really what a mistake it was haha.
But then when I heard bgwtb it immediately became one of my favs.
After hearing entire discography of Aic bgwtb and tdpdh are like my fav albums from them after dirt which is my all time fav album.
Best Band ever for me ♥️.
Me fucking too man!!
@d R don't forget Metallica after Cliff Burton, but yeah it's rare
Not as notable a singer, but his guitar playing gives a lot more depth and options to the band IMO.
Don't beat yourself up. I'm 30 years late on the whole AIC/Layne/Grunge train. Missed AIC even though they came through my town at least half a dozen times over the years (and to think I could have seen them close up in a small club, had my musical tastes swung that way back then). Trying to make up for lost time since then. Regrets...I have a few....
William does this justice. Damn. Goosebumps.
It always makes me happy to see people showing some love and supporting to DuVall.
I think Duvall does a pretty nice job filling in for the late great layne Staley. Obviously its impossible to replace such a distinct powerful voice but William Duvall does his best and does invoke Layne's power at times. I think he impressed the band too.
Holy shit Jerry's handsome.
Yes, he is handsome.😘
I’m handsome too 😉😍
Yessss
So hot
He is SO handsome!! ☺️
Duvall kills this and I’m the biggest Layne fan going.
-JB 89- oh for sure! Incredible!
He ain't Layne but the power of his voice surprised me.
Jerry's smile at the end tells the tale...AiC would be back!!
Soon as he starting hitting the higher notes he came into his own, as AIC Layne replacement. He only got better in the years to come after this.
I met him at Mohegan sun on tour with velvet revolver..he was at don Imus after the show around 1 in the morning I said hey man Awsome perforce don't let the internet tools talk shit you guys have more fans than you realize that's why we we're hear....he shook my hand and said that meant alot then bought me a coffee signed it .......still have ir
Duvall's voice is haunting in the opening "whoo" almost as if he received his blessing...
Happy birthday, Layne
I saw Heart Live in late 80's. They sounded so good live. I wish I would have seen AIC before Layne died.
This actually went hard. RIP Layne. We love you, brother.
This is the performance that got Duval the gig.
Josh Rose technically he already had it bc he was already doing Layne’s verses on Jerry’s solo shows when they’d go back and perform AiC songs with Jerry’s solo songs but this one sealed the deal
Jose Cano Yeah, this was the show that made the band want to continue. It was always going to be William.
Good info, thx. I never heard this guy sing until tonight. He's doing a great job.
He had it already or you wouldn't be hearing this.they dont try them out live....smh
I am MOVED to hear this again since I thought I would NEVER hear this sung by anyone else, let alone by Layne. THIS IS WELL DONE AND DONE WELL. LAYNE WOULD APPROVE !
Love when Ann says, “Wow!” Into her microphone
Will has come a long way since this performance.. He must have been so nervous coming in after Layne. But he has found his own voice, he is a talented singer and guitar player and I am happy that he is a part of AIC.😊 AIC is and will always be my favorite band💖Thank you for the video 🙏
When I first heard that AIC found a new singer I was a sceptical but damn Will definitely surprised me.
@Fryx Ur it was fun to see Ann be like, nope I'm not gonna sing, you shine. And now I want to hear what those two could really do to a song. Jerry and Nancy don't exactly suck either😂
Those of us that were fans of Duvall’s first band, Comes With The Fall, have known for a long long time how great he is.
Very very true. It was huge shoes to fill and he molded himself to be not of Layne's shadow but his own position next to Layne as a member of AIC it's almost like he has been there this whole time. I have loved AIC since I was 11 years old back the end of 1991 going into 1992. Vacations to Oregon the radio stations played them along with other area bands from up and down the coast Portland up to Seattle Washington. I have relatives that lived out there I always got to hear them and I liked them so much at 11 and then by 1993 I got my big doses of AIC cassette tapes then CDs i don't think I'll ever not love them or not listen to them I also have Alice in Chains tattooed down my arm and my youngest goes by his middle name Layne. There isn't enough words to express the love I have for this band I'm sure it mirrors so many others who have carved these guys into there hearts.
He always had his own voice, he honed it over many years in Comes With The Fall.
No one can replace Layne Staley but this new guy William does a pretty good job singing! Sounds good! And this is a rebirth for this Band! Good for them!
I wish people would quit considering him the "new guy". He's been with them for like 15 years now.
I love that Jerry wrote this song as a way to connect with his Dad. Glad that my Dad was around long enough to get comfortable sharing some of his Vietnam experiences with us.
Im really happy to see such a welcoming vibe for William. That's one of the most difficult things to do for a band is to find someone else for a front man. I was expecting to see an end to the band but nope. They still are making great music.
Alice in Chains , Heart and Guns N'Roses !!!
My man Jerry looking a whole lot like Dave Mustaine here with that flying V
Supertaldo916 lol yea
They are half brothers lol
I was thinking the samething. 👍
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT
This song is about Jerry's dad in Vietnam with the nickname "rooster."

Sometimes lightning strikes twice. William Duvall is a perfect fit and brings added talent with guitar skills. Love old and new Alice!
This was at Taj Mahal, Atlantic City. Two nights filming, 2006. What most people don’t know is that Ann and Nancy’s mom, Lou, was passing away in Seattle during this time. Ann and Nancy flew home to be with their dying mom one last time, and then flew back out for these shows. Total pros, did these shows and interviews, nobody knew at the time what they were going through.
Jerry Cantrell is the 🐐! I don’t understand how he’s so underrated and under appreciated in the rock world!
Layne is immortalized by the legacy he left behind
And God bless william for being a part of keeping their legacy going is how i feel about all that
God bless nancy n ann aswell
This is beautiful, Wilson sisters, DuVall, Duff on Guitar and Jerry, Mike and Sean! I've seen AIC with William on vocals and he is just superb
Anne's voice is still fierce!
My God, Jerry's fills were killer. Wish Ann sang some more.
Robbie Fitzgerald i know I love her voice she’s so powerful
Ann Wilson is so beautiful and intelligent and wonderful
William did amazing
This literally gave me goosebumps! Seeing the band smile again after such tragedy. Seeing them rock with some of their hero’s. Seeing members of 3 amazing bands absolutely rock this. I will forever love Laynes voice, but I am so glad they brought William into the mix to continue their story.
I thought Ann was going to burst into tears near the start.
At 4:14, when Anne puts her hand on Jerry's cheek and they are singing" No he ain't going die", I think she was trying very hard not to cry.
Think its the reason she couldn't sing it herself, would have been too hard to do emotionally for her.
Just saw AIC last night and was BLOWN away with Duvalls voice. Better in 2022 then it was here, they stole the show.
My 2 favorites Heart and Alice and chains!😍🤩😘😊
I still have a crush on the Heart girls
DuVall sang this like a true genious but Staley was a GOD 😊 May he Rest In Peace
Duvall - love his interaction with bandmates and fans
Sean is one of the most underrated drummers.
They nailed it. William absolutely killed it.
Excellent!!! So happy that Jerry has been able to keep his beloved band going!
If I could pick someone to look like in real life like building a character in a video game, it’d be Sean Kinney. Dude is the definition of cool.
literally two of my fav bands.... this just cured my depression
Man this is solid. Killer vocals.
This song reminds me of layne always and it is sad that hes gone
sad...all that is good is going to renew itself
this feels a bit melancholic and epic at the same time. awesome.
I do believe Layne would have loved this performance! I hope he shined down on these people from above! RIP Layne...gone but never forgotten!
Oh my Duff... it's so great to find him here. He's such a cool guy and amazing bassist.
Sorta his first time... William Duval had been performing with Jerry Cantrell for a few years prior to this. So it wasn’t exactly his first time singing AIC live. Duval’s band Comes with the Fall (kick ass band, btw) was opening for Jerry Cantrell on his D-Trip solo tour. Duval would come out and sing a few AIC songs for the encores. I was at the Whiskey in LA and everyone was floored. This was maybe 2001-2002...? I had a feeling AIC would be back. Thankfully they did!
Nice to see the Wilson sisters here too. Great singers in their own right. Awesome to know they are friends with AIC too.
William Duvall killed it.
What a soulful presentation by all. Very moving.
Heart giving back to the new generation of Rock n Rollers.....Thats called class.....
This is incredible!!! The Wilson sisters, rock godesses and the legendary Alice in Chains.. What a combo, love you all!!! Oh and Jerry, marry me, lol!
I love when they get to the part that goes “Gloria sent me pictures of my boy “ and William pointed at jerry
Nice treat that Duff came along for the ride.
The more I see Duvall the more I really love his energy
I can’t wait to see them live in August
This song is now for Layne... RIP bro
Spawn McFrenzy, I had the same thoughts. We ain’t gonna die. I cried whenever I thought about Layne.
I remember hearing this guy sing Nutshell at the Gorge when they opened for Velvet Revolver. When I closed my eyes it gave me chills and it felt like Layne was there singing. A moment I will never forget.
If it's your first time on stage succeeding the legendary Layne Staley, it's nice to have the legendary Ann Wilson backing you up.
