Very good review indeed! I have only one question - will there be some sort of warning as soon as the battery runs low? And does the Instamic show a percentage for the remaining power? Lastly, can it be powered/charged via USB? Okay, those were 3 questions... ;)
Hi @@tobiasmoeckel, you can track the battery level from our app and through the LEDs onboard. Before Instamic runs out of battery, it will save the file. It can be powered via USB to record until the memory ends (14hrs 48kHz/24bit LPCM WAV file / 8Gb internal memory). I hope it helps. Happy to help anytime at support@instamic.io. Regards, Michele
@@Instamic Hi Michele, thank you so much for your reply! Yes, this definitely helps. Good to know that the mic will save before the battery dies... that's great. Thanks again!
Really great informative overview thanks. Just got mine this week and just started to explore it's potential. I wish they would make a little cold shoe version of the mounts so you could just slip it on and off the camera.
Good to see you had a positive experience with Instamic - can't say mine has been the same. I think I received a defective unit. The problem is in the ONLY button on the mic, needing to be pressed repeatedly and with a fingernail to get it to even turn on. It will NOT record by pressing the button. Won't turn off by pressing the button. The only way to record is to use the app. After trading e-mails with Instamic, they wanted to see a video of me pressing the button... apparently, they think I am so stupid as to not being able to find the only button on this mic and press it. They suggested I "clean it and do a firmware update"... by clean it, I assume they meant remove any files, since I've only had the mic for 48 hours. I did the firmware update, and now it is worse. So, that's fun. Not. I am waiting to hear back from them yet again. Difficulty getting it to pair up with Insta360 One R and X2 cameras. Impossible to turn off by using the button, the app is the only way, and my phone is occupied with the camera app (wifi connection, not bluetooth, so certainly not interfering with the Instamic app). In an e-mail, they related that they have many users who have a "smooth and easy time" working with the Insta360 cameras - certainly NOT my experience. No one needs this kind of frustration.

So do you always have to sync the audio to the video when using this mic? no way of the mic inputless compact camera picking up the audio from the instamic or your phone using the instamic while recording?
I would make use of the hot shoe. They sell hot shoe adapter, which you could just glue the velcro or magnet piece on to. I prefer not to tape or glue anything directly on the camera.
Hi Great video! Well done and fantastic sound mixing as we can hear all your audio track tests...Powerfully done ! I don't do video ( I'm just a stills photographer) but I'm helping a friend make a Video Doc of an old Singer friend, sadly departed, but plan to do some candid style recording on video of some of his old friends and I want a good reliable small mic and this seems ideal. If on the Instamic how do you transfer the Audio Track to the camera footage and are there any Lip sync issues in merging the Audio with the Video images? are there any videos of this process being actively edited? Hi! So glad you enjoyed the video 😁 the audio is recorded into the instamic directly. What you do to sync the audio to the video file select both clips in your editor (I use final cut x and it is very simple but I haven't tried it on anything else yet unfortunately) and then click "sync clips". It then makes a combined clip that is automatically synced up without issue
Very useful review! Do you know what the differences are between this one and the pro version? Also, is the audio omnidirectional or is it more isolating? Do you know if this will fit in a hot shoe?
The differences between the standard and pro version are the number of microphones. the standard has a stereo output and pro version has 4 serero array mics built in. They're cardioid (180 degrees) and not omnidirectional mics, which is probably a good thing as you have more control. It doesn't have a hot shoe mount, but by using the mounts you can get with it (sticky or velcro) you could very easily make one
@@MicroFourNerds awesome! Btw if it's attached to your camera and you're walking and shooting, or vlogging or whatever and recording, will it pick up the vibrations from your footsteps or from you adjusting the camera or other movements/anything like that? The Zoom H1 was really bad in this regard, even though it's great in nearly every other way. So something to compliment my H1 could be really useful.
@@officialtiimo I've noticed this with my zoom too. Even when you hold it in your hand it can pick up the rustling sounds. The instamic is much better in this regard. It doesn't rustle very much at all even if clothes or my hair etc goes over the device when I'm wearing it. so I think the vibrations caused by walking and vlogging wouldn't be an issue if its mounted on the camera

such a nice presentation! loving this! Unfortunately they are not sold in Vienna and a bit too expensive for me :/
Hi Emily, great video!! I’m an absolute amateur who’s about to buy a GX80 and your reviews have been great. I just had one question: How easy is it to sync the audio to video in post? My only concern is the mic quality with the GX80. Any steer in the right direction would be really helpful :-)
It depends on your software - if it’s Final Cut, it’s literally one click. Select the two clips and press “sync” I’m not sure on other software. Another option perhaps might be the newer g100 which has an excellent mic (and audio input) but doesn’t have in body stabilisation. Always pros and cons haha hope that helps!
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for the quick reply :-) The image stabilisation is really important along with a more compact size and competitive price point which is why the GX80 really stands out Vs all the competition. The mic was the only trade off, but, as I won’t be using this a lot it wasn’t a huge sacrifice. Will check out Final Cut as that sounds like a really simple process. Thank you again for your advice and for all the videos you post. It’s really helped me out. Your photos look fantastic too - Keep up the good work.
You can, once you've hit record you can put the app in the background. Or you can hit record using the button on the device and not use the app at all, whichever is easier 😊 don't forget to use code NERDS at the checkout to get a bit of a discount if you do get one! Every little helps haha
Just found your channel, and love this review - thank you! Off to explore your channel further (hunting for someone to teach me how to sync my audio with phone video recording - I'm struggling with this!) ... I'll also go check out Insta Mic (never heard of it before but very taken with your demonstrations) Thank you again!
Thanks for this video. Lots of useful info there. I am interested in getting one of these for making videos. I was wondering though, how do you match up the sound with the video and also any sound on the original footage? Can this be done in the video editing application? Thanks.
I have that same question. Thinking of getting one for my Lumix FZ80 but I'd like to understand the syncing process between the instamic audio and the camera video footage. Thanks.
Can't believe I missed this review until now! Seems audio is a bit of an overlooked topic for videographers in general. I see you've got several of the popular recorders there from Tascam, Zoom and Olympus, would be really appreciated if you ever had time to run through what you see are the pros & cons of each (including the Instamic).
Just saw this. insane mic!!!! question.... i see it goes back to the app via bluetooth... but how do you sync it to video or other audio? I know basic question but sync can be critical. Does it also record to internal memory or just via the app?
It records to in built storage so no worries if the Bluetooth loses connection. I edit in final cut, I choose the audio and video clip and press “synchronise clips” and it does it instantly for me
hi Emily. i really enjoy watching your videos. i entered the world of m43 with an olympus e-m10 mark ii. as i was searching for tutorials, i luckily came by with your channel and it's been really helpful about m43 and other photography equipments. as a beginner photographer, i am not happy with the sound quality of my camera but i didn't know how to solve it, as it doesn't have a mic input . how will i be able to use this external mic for my camera?
It takes an extra step, but depending on what editing software you use it can be very simple. If you were to use this device with your camera, you'd need to sync the audio files up in your software. On final cut it is one click (right click, sync clips) and it does it for you. I'm not sure how easy it is on other software but hopefully just as simple. Once the clips are syned you can use them as normal with the improved audio
Would this be effective at picking up audio in a loud environment like a busy gym if the person being recorded wears the mic on their T-shirt? Thanks for the video, very insightful!
Hi, I found your videos last week when I bought my gx85/80 and was looking for setup tutorials. I've watched over 10 of your vids since. Excellent channel! I was considering the omnidirectional Rode pinmic connected to a h1n zoom for my audio needs alongside the gx85 video. If you were looking for quality audio in a small footprint and versatility, would you choose this over the rode pinmic and h1n zoom option? Please continue to putout your amazing content. Much appreciated!
So glad you're liking the channel!! I think both setups have pros and cons. The pinmic will be really easy to conceal but it's sort of a one trick pony, you can use it as a lapel mic and that seems to be about it. The instamic can be a lapel mic, location mic, etc etc. I think it might work out a bit cheaper as well. But they'll both be great they're good choices!
@@MicroFourNerds So, I went ahead and purchased this instamic and used your promocode: Nerds. Saved myself some pretty coin with that. I hope the small commission can support all good things you have going on here. Thanks for all the reviews and helpful tutorials!
I would of put the Velcro on the hot shoe cover that came with the camera so when it's not in use the camera doesn't have a Velcro thing on it. Just a thought
Looks like a great little mic! Thanks for sharing. I'm still new to this and have a question. Is this a mic and a recorder where you have to sync your audio to video in post or does it enhance your camera mic so you record audio and video both through the camera? Thanks.
It's a separate mic where you'd need to sync the audio up in post, but it's very simple to do. Literally one click in Final Cut 😊 I assume (and hope!) it's just as simple in other video editors
Hi! In quiet venues you can get away with just the groom, they're usually close enough to pick the rest up. If it were outdoors or windy or a large setup, it would be ideal to mic up both bride and groom. I don't bother with the registrar much as they tend to project their voices a lot. I still love my instamic. And I can't believe it's been a year?! 😱😁
I bought the Instamic based on your review and others. The size is terrific and sound quality is good but actually using the mic is awful. Just knowing if the mic is on and then recording is too difficult. There's no way to touch it and feel to push the record button and be confident the Instamic is recording. I do a lot of action video while cycling and this mic has been unusable. The wind muff completely covers the mic - lights and record button. This mic design usability needs to be thought through better.
They’re slightly different offerings because the Rode transmits the audio to your camera directly and this records the audio internally. I have the Rode wireless filmmaker kit and that’s my first choice when micing up grooms. The Instamic is mega handy for backup audio or if more than one person needs micing up
You need the app to change settings but once they're set, you can just press record on the device as it is. The lights work as an audio meter it's pretty cool. It is built in storage only but there's plenty for audio (8gb). I was wary of Bluetooth myself but I've hit record from the back of a big church and that's about as much distance as I'll ever personally need!
This is a really great review. Does it cancel out background noise? I'm looking for a mic because whenever I try to film, you can hear cars passing on my street in the background.
Are there any other mics like this that have came out that you can pic up wireless audio via bluetooth without hooking anything to the phone or camera?
Editing all those audio files must have been an absolute pain, but thank you for doing such! A question comes to mind... - Can the app handle more than one mic at a time, like say if you wanted one in dual mono, and one in stereo?
hi emilie, thank you for this great video! I bought the same Gx80 camera, but the problem is that I am not good at video editing so how do I overlay the sound of the instamic with the video ?
Just found this video and bought this camera recently but I'm confused as how this thing is used. So if you mount this instamic to the camera is it recording in real time when you hit the video record button or is it recording on its own and you have to edit the sound it recorded in later in your video editing program. Sorry if the question sounds convoluted but I come from film photography.
No problem! It records separately onto the instamic then you sync it together in editing (which is one click in final cut and very simple but not sure about other programs)
With this camera being stabilised - the world is your oyster! I love the Olympus 45mm, which is very small. My fave micro four thirds prime though is the lumix 25mm f1.4. It is not cheap. But it is great!
How does this stack up against the Tascam DR 10L or Sony TX650... I only ask as I've recently bought these and this seems a bit cooler, any difference in quality?
I haven't had experience with those unfortunately but I have a a few different recorders and this seems to hold up very well in comparison. The stereo spread of some of my mics, like my tasco dr-40 does sound more spacial and rich, but for the size and convenience of this little dude I think its awesome 😁
I just picked up a gx85 being already a g95 user. Purchased for photography and it being smaller. I wonder if the usb port on the gx85 would work with mic adapter ?

I can see using this on the new DJI Osmo Pocket.
Great review. Just wondering if you happen to know the difference between the instamic Pro stereo and the Pro mono version? Thank you!
Great review - you've convinced me to buy one! Just one thing - can I use them app in the background, and film on my phone at the same time?
You can, once you've hit record you can put the app in the background. Or you can hit record using the button on the device and not use the app at all, whichever is easier 😊 don't forget to use code NERDS at the checkout to get a bit of a discount if you do get one! Every little helps haha
Just found your channel, and love this review - thank you! Off to explore your channel further (hunting for someone to teach me how to sync my audio with phone video recording - I'm struggling with this!) ... I'll also go check out Insta Mic (never heard of it before but very taken with your demonstrations) Thank you again!
Check this out. Should help.

Thanks.
The Instamic should complement my G7X Mk2 nicely. Great review-subscribed!
I just can´t believe it! U also play drums! Come on, let´s make a duo. I'll take my G9, my two G7s and my Rockstar Tama. :D
What a great mic. Awesome idea. Way smaller than an h1
I own the instamic, but wish I had found this equally tiny mic beforehand! Sony ICD-TX800
Oo that is a good idea actually. Yes, I will. I think I collect audio devices as much as lenses 😬 haha
Emily... you are freaking heaven-sent! I had no idea something like this existed!
Thank you for this gem and thorough review!
#MFTLife!
No problem 😊 it's a great little mic!
Thanks for the video, Emily! Was great to see another fellow woman in audio ;) Greetings from Germany!
Would this be effective at picking up audio in a loud environment like a busy gym if the person being recorded wears the mic on their T-shirt? Thanks for the video, very insightful!
That was fantastic! Thanks for sharing :)
Lovely mic, works pretty well
Really helpful review. Go Liverpool!
Thanks so much helped a lot, great content
What about noise? How's the microphone in that regard? Like the built-in mic on the camera or gets better quality audio with less noise in background?
That's a damn good alternative 😁
Looks like a great little mic! Thanks for sharing. I'm still new to this and have a question. Is this a mic and a recorder where you have to sync your audio to video in post or does it enhance your camera mic so you record audio and video both through the camera? Thanks.
It's a separate mic where you'd need to sync the audio up in post, but it's very simple to do. Literally one click in Final Cut 😊 I assume (and hope!) it's just as simple in other video editors
Thanks! Will see how easy it is in Imovie. I enjoy your posts.@@MicroFourNerds
Would you recommend we mic all three at a wedding shoot? The bride, groom and preacher? Also a year later do you still recommend it? Thanks.
Hello. Thanks for the review. Very helpful. asking where we can avail this intamic.. here in the philippine.. thankyou😀
what do you think is better the instamic or therode wireless go???
They’re slightly different offerings because the Rode transmits the audio to your camera directly and this records the audio internally.
I have the Rode wireless filmmaker kit and that’s my first choice when micing up grooms. The Instamic is mega handy for backup audio or if more than one person needs micing up
Do you have to use a phone? Does it have a place for a micro sd card? Or built in storage of some kind? I know Bluetooth doesn’t work that far.
@@MicroFourNerds Thats good to know thank you! I'm definitely interested.
Emily, you've just saved my life. You're marvelous! 😘
New to your channel and love this informative video!
This is a really great review. Does it cancel out background noise? I'm looking for a mic because whenever I try to film, you can hear cars passing on my street in the background.
Are there any other mics like this that have came out that you can pic up wireless audio via bluetooth without hooking anything to the phone or camera?
This is awesome thanks for the video
Excellent! very informative!!
you sure are a talented gal. Thanks a bunch for a great review. I'm sold.
I so don't need this. But I want it! You have a new subscriber!
Editing all those audio files must have been an absolute pain, but thank you for doing such!
A question comes to mind...
- Can the app handle more than one mic at a time, like say if you wanted one in dual mono, and one in stereo?
It can handle up to 10 different instamics at once 😁
hi emilie, thank you for this great video! I bought the same Gx80 camera, but the problem is that I am not good at video editing so how do I overlay the sound of the instamic with the video ?
Any good alternative for this? $150 is just too much
But damn girl you got skills w the drums !
Thank you for sharing. I was thinking to buy a zoom h1 recorder.
jacqueline ramos what is the difference beside the size ?
@@mvhan911 i havent decided yet. i wish instamic has the option for a lavalier . 🤔
@@MicroFourNerds Very cool. So I shouldn't feel bad about buying this camera then... heh.
Is there any prime lenses you'd recommend for it?
@@MicroFourNerds I think I'm sold I'm going to return these others and get a couple of these, I like to be different 😉
I just picked up a gx85 being already a g95 user. Purchased for photography and it being smaller. I wonder if the usb port on the gx85 would work with mic adapter ?
It doesn’t unfortunately it’s just for charging and image transfer
