Great direct comparison. If I end up vlogging I might pick up that ETM001. I just ordered the media mod 3 days ago because I had massive wind noise on my first ride with the 9. However yesterday i did a test ride with all 3 mics covered with bits of fur (previously, i only had the top and bottom covered) and the wind noise is gone. For my rinky dink videos the sound is good enough.
Definitely etm-001 is my favorite based on your footage audio. I like the clarity and crispness. I know, you mentioned it's omnidirectional and depending on the application may not be the best choice but it would be my go-to mic for majority of scenarios. Others sounded muffled too much. I just bought my GO PRO HERO 9 black a month ago but until now i cannot install microphone. Very good tutorial now i learn a lot thanks for sharing stay safe and connected my new friend
After watching other videos on the 9, I put a dead cat on the front and another on the top mic (over the hole close to the record button) and haven’t had any wind noise issues with the setting set to off. I didn’t test it without that second dead cat, but you might give that a try.
Thanks Clint, I've just started my own channel and so far don't have a mic outside the built-in one on my Go-Pro. Still scratching my head a bit deciding which to get but this was really helpful.
Great review. I just purchased my first GoPro and picked up the Hero 9. So next thing I was looking for was a mic, and that's when I came across your channel and really enjoyed your recommendations. Just subscribed to your channel as well. Great job. Thanks and be safe. And BTW...the ETM 001 sounds great, but probably going to pick up all that you have shown in this video.
Built-in mic does sound the best, maybe not the greatest sounding, but considering all other points, I think its the best option. Cheaper, less setup, less cumbersome, etc.
Have you given any thought to using a Zoom Handy H1n Digital recorder with a lav mic and put the recorder in your pocket? You can sync the audio to the video in post and not worry about needing the Media mod.
Definitely a good option. For me, when I use the GoPro, I'm shooting a lot of short clips so syncing audio from an external device would take a lot of editing time.
I also own the Edutige ETM-001 and like it very much. But one of the most underrated mics out there is the Sony ECM-CS3. It's basically the Edutige, but in stereo when you need it. Disneyland or any theme park is a situation where you want to capture all the ambient sounds around you in a more immersive discrete 2-channel setup. It sounds great on a home theater. The only knock on the Sony is that it has a long 3 ft cord, which can get in the way at times.
I need a mic that can capture audio all around because I do outdoor videos and 99.9% of the time, I’m out in the woods with nobody around. I’m constantly switching from being in front of the camera and being behind it. GoPro audio from behind sounds like I’m being muffled by a pillow. So I’m guessing the ETM 001 would be my best option. I have a housing that can hold the mic adapter so it should work great with this mic plugged in.
Hey buddy, great vid. So all our vids here are using the 9, but with full foam cover, which can be a pain. It can come loose and get in way of screen or soak up water and become muffled. I tried two of the stick on wind mufflers over both mics, but wind noise was terrible! Some subscribers said if using the fury things, there's also a third drain hole to cover up, but I don't know where! Our problem in the UK is lots of rain!! Any advice very appreciated! Cheers, Jim
The drain mic is on the opposite side of the camera as the power button (I don't have the camera with me so I can't tell you which side that is). I have not tried to cover it yet but will soon. I've noticed with the camera on my chest and the stick on windscreen on the front microphone only, I get good audio. but I think if you just have the camera out and about you're going to need to cover all three to get the best sound.
Thanks for doing this test. I recently got the Hero10 and used the media mod mic a few times. I don't like it. It sounds tinny, and this is exemplified in your testing as well. I like the lab mic best, but it's not as convenient. I got a windslayer foam type thing I'll be trying out to help the onboard mics perform better in the wind.
Haven't started recording anything yet, but this was super helpful to decide whether I needed anything extra/additional. I'm going to go the route of a wind screen or fuzzy thing like you had. Sounded great.
ive watched a bunch of videos and the built-in mic sounds far better than the media mod mic. External accesories are usually outsourced and lower quality
Great video. I just have two questions for you. Why not have the wind reduction feature turned on all the time, and where did you get the wind screen? Thanks for the content
I leave win reduction off because when it kicks on (assuming it was on auto) it really degrade the audio quality. If you keep a windscreen on, you should not have any issues except for super high wind. amzn.to/3QXtU7i
I got the media mod, too. And as in your video it's internal mic sounds worse then the gopro's. But the hero 9 mics regularly add some crackling/pop sound into the audio chanells.
Few years later, here I am with the comment, mate, where did you buy that furry thing that you put on your GoPro camera? I think that for my needs, the built in mic with that thing is more than enough. :) Thanks! Btw, I subscribed, great content!
Mount GoPro Hero 7 Black to motorcycle handlebars with a sound sponge, no helmet, while riding lean forward and shout at the GoPro when commenting. I get an echo in my recordings which can be heard at the very beginning of my recent Part 2 video if you want to see what I mean to comment, only going about 40mph there. Someone suggested it's the 3 mics on the GoPro causing it??? From this review, I am thinking of using my GoPro mic adapter with the ETM-003 shotgun mic you mention and the 90-degree adapter. (actually just saw they don't have that so maybe the ETM-008) Your thoughts and any links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for doing this video.
Very good and informative video . I am using gopro 9 black for my v logs . I tried different external mics like dji , rod , sarmon , and many more brands . All these mic are cordless . But problem is this when you connect all these mic through media mod your camera will not be water proof more because you relase the water sealed cover from camera to connect the media mod . What is hectic problem 😕 If gopro company gives a Bluetooth connected external mic option it will be great and there will be no problem with camera waterproofing In my opinion the original built-in mic is better .
The Hero 9 is still a good camera. But the hero 10 has GoPros own processor so I found it to be much more stable in terms of not crashing. For night riding the GoPro can suffer a bit so you need a really bright light. GoPros are just not that great in low light.
My Gopro 9 will be here in a couple days i do want to get the mod as for now will be using my old setup 001 with the Mic Adaptor. Nice review thanks for sharing.
It's a very sensitive microphone so you need to make sure you have a good windscreen on it. But I would first try a windslayer and use the built-in microphone.
The ETM-001 elbow adapter that you have linked and that you show in the video is a TRS to TRRS adapter. I didn’t think that worked?? Please advise. Thank you. Great info in this video.
Great video thank you very much. I'm trying to find a mic set up that I can use for car racing and the cameras outside so how do I reduce that much wind noise?
Hey, I got the ETM001, not sure if mine is defective but ive tried different types of foam and dead cats but once I get to about 30km/h on the bike the wind noise litterally cuts the audio in and out, sounds like its 'clipping'. Do I just need to try to cut down on wind noise even more?
Great video ! Just got myself the Gopro10 with a chest rig to use while I'm out fishing. Not too impressed by the sound quality when it's a bit windy, do you have any tips for which microphone would be best? The camera itself will be on the chest rig and sometimes on a pole in the middle of the boat, which microphone would you recommend?
Hi Clint, thanks for this video! I'm looking for a high quality mic for live concert footage of both the crowd and live music. Which one of these mics would you recommend for my application?
Excellent video. I have a question: I fly an open cockpit powered parachute aircraft. Sometimes I use a Gopro 7 black on a head strap. I fly at a BLAZING 30 mph. Looking for a suitable external mic to plug into the Gopro. I want to narrate the flight while minimizing the engine noise (engine sits behind the pilot and passenger). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Honestly, the first thing I would try is to use the foam windscreen that goes over the GoPro. That’s what I do for narrating my mountain bike videos. It’s good enough that I can usually keep reduction to off since that is pretty bad audio. Without off, the internal mic on the newer GoPro is really good. However, if I recall correctly it was around the hero nine or 10 where the internal Mik got much better. The 7 was OK but not great. If that doesn’t work I would try the Rode SmartLav plus with a TRS adapter. Of course you have to have the mic adapter for the GoPro
@@ClintGibbs Thanks for the pointers! I’m wondering if there is a mic available that I could swivel downwards while it is on the head strap so that it would pick up my voice but not the engine behind me. I’m thinking I will end up with a bunch of microphones before this project is over!
Media mod mic behaves like a condenser mic, it picks up too much background noise and its only useful when used in a quiet place. The gopro 9 built in mic is good enough.
This video was so insanely helpful. May I ask: I am a fisherman who prefers to mount his GoPro 9 to his head. It often happens that I am fishing next to a road or in windy situations. Would you be able to recommend a setup for such an application?
It sounds like you need to keep it waterproof. In that case I would put a foam windscreen over it or put the sticky dead cats on the three microphones.
This was very helpful, thank you! But can we talk about the incredible homes in your neighborhood?? WOW! Those are multi million dollar houses here in San Diego, CA.
I missed why you said you try to avoid using auto wind reduction? Also I hate how GoPro forces people to buy media mod to add mics, shouldn’t that be open to all manufacturers
I'm here because I have a Hero 9 also and the media mod mic sounds muffled in comparison to the on board mic. I like the sound of the mic you used with the 90 degree adaptor the best. Question, when using the wireless rode device are there any issues with the audio not syncing to the video? Your video was very helpful. Thank you.
No, the Rode wireless go works perfectly with the GoPro. Most of the time when I'm using an external microphone I'm using my Sony ZV1 now, but the The GoPro and Rode setup is also very good.
There is another mic on top of the gopro that needs a dead cat. That will make awesome audio with wind reduction turned off. It is by the record button.
I haven’t tried it since it’s too big for me to carry out on a ride. But the windscreen is very good so I’m sure it would sound about the same as it did when I was standing still.
Hey Clint! Thank you for doing this. Your video is one of the most clear and articulate “shootout” comparison type videos I’ve ever seen. Very cool and very helpful. Do you ever use a wireless version of that lav mic? Does that exist? Thanks again!
Have you thought about a wireless lav mic & recorder like the Tascam DR-10L? It’s a separate device and requires syncing but it might be better overall for riding and vlogging where you can then mix sound sources.
Thank you for your video. May I ask where is the built-in microphone on the Gopro hero 9 black and where the speaker is please? I see under the device something like one of those and in front also, but I am a little bit confused, maybe someone can help me find the right answers. Also IF the microphone is in front, the little windscreen put in the video in front of the camera, I would think it lowers the volume of your voice, but I am sure there is an explanation for that. Sorry my mother tongue is not English so I might have missed some point made there.
@@ClintGibbs Thank you, finally I am finding them all. I broke by mistake the door to the microphone under the power button: What would you do to protect it if protection necessary with rain or snow for instance or dirt? (I think it is lost somewhere on a prairie o: as I can not find it).
I see you only put dead cat fur on the wind microphone, you must put dead cat on the other stereo mics too in order to have it work properly. You mentioned you set wind setting to off, and that was your only mic with dead cat. I still don't recomend audio from internal mics, but this is an observation and something to look out for.
Nice vid, thank you for the info. As a GoPro Hero 9 newbie, can you explain what my options for a mic ADAPTER are, if I don't want to go with a media mod? I've heard the dongle is terrible. What do you recommend outside of the media mod if I want to go with a lav mic? Thanks in advance!
one more question clint! do u have any tests with the etm001 with the wind muff with no L adapter? i want to try to avoid the extra adapter because im afraid through time it will not point straight up.
Can you plug the SmartLav + into the media mod with the TRRS to TRS adaptor? I've tried and hasn't been working, im not sure if the adaptor is just bad.
Yes. Just to make sure you've got it straight, the lav mic is a TRRS microphone and you need an adapter to take it to a TRS. I think that's what you said but just wanted to clarify.
Great review. I just wish you would have mounted the camera to your person( chest/ chin bar ) then tested the audio. Most bikers/ MTBers narrate videos that way. The audio from the GoPro mic actually sounds much worse when your not speaking directly in front of it
You only put the windscreen only one of the built-in mics on the Hero 9. You need to screen all the built-in mics. The Hero 9 switches mics to keep the audio steady as you move the camera around. This is why you are experiencing wind noise.
Hi, thanks for the video. I have a few questions. I wanted to film my 2,000 mile road trip coming up with a GoPro 9. One thing I’m considering is to not use copyrighted music or any music if any and just have the road noise. So would it be possible to connect a microphone that has a long string and place that somewhere on the car. What would be a way so I can achieve this?
I would go for the build in microphones on that thing, and I wonder if the build in mic pick up your voice when behind the camera coz im often walk behind the camera and talk, i use the hero 7 because the hero 8 is useless for me in that matter.. Thanks for sharing.. //freddie
after 3 years this video is still great and legit.
the built in mic with auto wind reduction actually wasn't that bad!
Thanks for the tip

agreed, seems like the simplest and most effective solution.
That's fucking awesome can just re eq / normalize the audio for other results too! Blessed

Great tips CG.
Ive found filming with my samsung note 10 to be incredible wind reduction.
I've actually yet to use a Samsung phone since I've been using Pixel phones for the last few years. But the camera looks incredible on those. Cheers!
The lav mic is what I would go with. The wire may be cumbersome but the sound is cleanest of all the mics.

Great test. Lav is best for voice as you said. Built in mic with auto wind reduction seems the best and most practical overall.

Have you thought about a wireless lav mic & recorder like the Tascam DR-10L? It’s a separate device and requires syncing but it might be better overall for riding and vlogging where you can then mix sound sources.
I use the Rode Wireless Go when I can.
There is a microphone on the front under the lens, one on the top, and one under the power button on the side.
@@ClintGibbs Thank you, finally I am finding them all. I broke by mistake the door to the microphone under the power button: What would you do to protect it if protection necessary with rain or snow for instance or dirt? (I think it is lost somewhere on a prairie o: as I can not find it).
Can you use the ETM-001 directly with the GoPro hero black nine, or do you need to also include the Media Mod?
You need the media mod
Thank you for the information
Great video, thanks. Where do you buy the fury wind screens from?
Check out the links I put in the description of the video and it will direct you to those.
I see you only put dead cat fur on the wind microphone, you must put dead cat on the other stereo mics too in order to have it work properly. You mentioned you set wind setting to off, and that was your only mic with dead cat. I still don't recomend audio from internal mics, but this is an observation and something to look out for.
Wish you would have showed how to actually set these up
Nice vid, thank you for the info. As a GoPro Hero 9 newbie, can you explain what my options for a mic ADAPTER are, if I don't want to go with a media mod? I've heard the dongle is terrible. What do you recommend outside of the media mod if I want to go with a lav mic? Thanks in advance!
Media mod is your only option as far as I know. Even the old dongle will not work on the Hero 9.
@@ClintGibbs Awesome man...thank you!
awesome video! question, what ulanzi cold shoe adapter is that?
amzn.to/3Om5pxD
one more question clint! do u have any tests with the etm001 with the wind muff with no L adapter? i want to try to avoid the extra adapter because im afraid through time it will not point straight up.
Just subscribed!
I actually think the Built in GoPro mic sounded the best, other then the lapel mic.
The audio from the GoPro mic actually sounds much worse when your not speaking directly in front of it
Wait... wasn’t that elbow adapter a trrs??? How’d that work?
You only put the windscreen only one of the built-in mics on the Hero 9. You need to screen all the built-in mics. The Hero 9 switches mics to keep the audio steady as you move the camera around. This is why you are experiencing wind noise.
Which one is the best for cycling with GoPro recording?
I don't really recommend using the media mod for cycling so use the straight GoPro with a windscreen over it
which one would you recommend for recording car exhaust sounds with the gopro 9 ?
The ETM-001
Can you provide the link to the ulanzi adapter for media mod to keep the furry mic higher?
Hi, thanks for the video.
I have a few questions. I wanted to film my 2,000 mile road trip coming up with a GoPro 9. One thing I’m considering is to not use copyrighted music or any music if any and just have the road noise. So would it be possible to connect a microphone that has a long string and place that somewhere on the car. What would be a way so I can achieve this?
Yes. A lot of lav mics for DSLR's have very long cables. That would be the best option. You would just need to rig up a mount to hold the lav mic.
I would go for the build in microphones on that thing, and I wonder if the build in mic pick up your voice when behind the camera coz im often walk behind the camera and talk, i use the hero 7 because the hero 8 is useless for me in that matter..
Thanks for sharing.. //freddie
