The wind slayer is good for the price. Unfortunately you just put an insulated coat on an already overheated camera. That's my issue with the wind slayer...well, even the media mod tends to hold in the heat. I suppose if it's winter or fall, no big deal but once summer hits and the camera starts over heating, it will shut down the media mod, remote control and even recording gets a little weird. If you are only putting your camera on for a few minutes to record, I can't see an issue but I run mine for hours at a time, so keeping it cool is always an problem. Maybe someone should invent a GoPro Cooler! Nice video.
I actually found the other day when shooting in a storm that the Media mod was way worse at cutting out the wind noise than the wind slayer. That did surprise me.
Honestly the great thing avoiding the media mod is just keeping things simple, having more stuff to set up and think about is rather off putting, the one thing that wasn't covered to those not in the know or forgetful is once you add the media mod, its no longer water proof. I'm not talking about going for a swim but with even just the windslayer, you can easily still go out in the rain where ever you are, this is more apparent if you live in a country or area that is prone to such weather. Think the expression good enough needs to be used more.
The one reason I would always recommend an external microphone is it just for me stops that handling noise you get from moving the tripod ETC Great comparison and great video as always though Danny
I took your advice on the GoPro 9 and bought the wind slayer, It works a bloody treat and I don’t ever get my adaptor out at all. Much simpler and much easier
I'm a drummer, and use a Hero 2018, which by-and-large works great, but sometimes the cymbals aren't great for the built-in mic, would these mics help with that? And would they even be compatible with a Hero 2018?
Awesome video as always Danny! I usually use the Rode Wireless Go... BUT, im now on my 3rd Media Mod since December as the inside of the port the jack goes into keeps breaking and getting loose so will not hold the cable for the external mic. My media mods have been very well looked after and Gopro keep sending ne new ones so that's good, but just fed up with it now. Inbetween my media mods (while gopro are sending me new ones) I use the same wind slayer, and it is great, if there isnt too much wind!! My channel is all about hiking and wildcamping in the hills and mountains so need decent wind protection. Im actually using the wind slayer on my latest video, if you wanted to hear out of interest how bad it is. You can hear at the start and thats only like 15mph winds, about 2:10 in when im at the trigonometry point im in about 20 - 25mph winds. You can still hear what im saying but wind noise is very bad. **added: not that bad that I wouldnt upload it but in comparison to my external mic** Only using this waiting for my OTHER media mod to arrive. When using my Wireless Go even in 40mph winds plus its very, very good. Fed up of media mods now so think after Christmas im going to get a Tascam DR-10L for reliability. I know ill have to sync my audio but thats like a one min job (depending on software obviously) so no bother to me. If you are lower down flogging like you were though then yeah save your cash and get the wind slayer 100%! When ive done some woodland and forest hammock camps with hardly any wind the sound have been bang on 👌🏻👌🏻 Thanks for your time in reading and for a fantastic video as always. Chris ✌🏼
@@MrCoco2344 Hi! Dont get me wrong when the media mod works its great, and luckily I wasnt one of those people that have had the issues with getting home to find you have no audio at all or anything as some people on RUclips were saying was happening to them. The wind slayer, that is what I want!! I don't want to detach a battery cover for media mod. Also, I can't use wireless modules because I usually make videos with my 9-month-old baby. I can't put the wireless modules on her chest. That was a brilliant idea. Thank you. 😊

The built in mics with the slayer isn’t as clean as the Rode, especially with background noise, but it sounds a lot better for your voice than the media mod, 2nd mic, and wireless mic. The Rode has the high end sizzle that a lot of modern condenser vocal mics have. I personally don’t like that, so that’s the only downside besides the price to me
I just returned the media mod because the mic on it sucks (internal mic sounds better), and I didnt want to attach extra mic as the reason for me using go pro is its small size. It just wasnt worth the price for making the video sound so staticky
I have the wind slayer and would buy the media mod if I thought I would be using it a lot. The go pro is mostly just mounted on my bike, as a safety option, more than a vlogging tool. Money isn’t the deciding factor. I’m not sure what to do. What do you think? Thanks for the vid, I like the genuine viewpoints.
Welcome and thanks for the great question no you don’t need a wireless mic with the media mod but if you want to use a wireless mic you need the media mod to connect the microphone hope that has helped. Thx Danny
I use the Ulanzi extender for the Rode video micro. It really helps keeping the wind muff out of sight. Just got the wind slayer looking forward to trying it.
good test. thanks for the information. However, I stick with my heavy EOS 5D. I do not like the way too much depth of field on the gopro. Everything looks like a postcard ... not very nice

A timely video for sure. I'm going back and forth with another Tuber on the merits of the media mod because, while his content is fantastic, he does occasionally suffer from bad audio from wind. In my use the only draw back for the media mod is it adds bulk, but that it's. For motovlogging you have the benefit of using an external mic that runs inside the helmet but another added bonus is being able to run the GoPro off a power brick simultaneously and in a convenient manner. As for using the media mod for cycling (or electronic skateboarding etc) videos the bonuses are the same, external mic's either wired or wireless and using a power brick. There's one more bonus though while cycling/mountain biking. If you have your rig chest mounted you can tell the media mod to use the rear mic, the one facing your chest. This way you cut out even more ambient noise such as wind while at the same time isolating spoken word. And for the times your talking to the camera you can set up a short cut to flip the mic to the front..although you have to do that while not recording, which isn't the end of the world. All in all the media mod for my uses is a must. My GoPro 9 lives in it. Thanks for the video and examples.

@@AdamBoltGoldCoast the media mod is a joke
