I realized that when I said this mic replaced the original VideoMic Go, I was actually thinking of and describing the VideoMicro. I guess I should go get my micro mics in a row.
Hey Tom I have the go two, and what I would like to know: when you did your outdoors lab coat exercise did you clean up the background noise on the go 2 or it just sounds that good?
Tip for Rode: Make a version of this mic targeted specifically at 'work from home' people looking to improve their audio. Include a clip attachment for use at the top of a laptop screen or monitor so people could attach it right next to their webcam. Since the mic is so small/light, a desktop stand could be designed with a heavy base & gooseneck for infinite placement options. Finally, add some user friendly software like the Shure MV7 has. I've spent the last two days researching mics for 'out of frame' use for Zoom calls, and making RUclips videos etc, and it's been a challenge finding a good option. Please consider what I've written, I am certain this would be a huge seller. And Tom, another great video here, I just subscribed.
@@noodle31658 I ended up getting the Rode NTG! My laptop is elevated on a stand (I use a USB keyboard). I bought a Proline MS112 Desktop Boom Mic Stand from my local Guitar Center, and have the NTG below the laptop pointing up at my mouth. It's totally out of frame and gives slightly better audio quality over Zoom meetings than my laptop's internal mic. For making RUclips videos, I expect the audio quality to be much better than my laptop's mic, but I haven't tested that yet.
@@HelpfulMike thanks mate. I think I'm going to do similar but grab the go ii, with the boom above the frame. Don't need a pro set up but something good quality for video calls all day. If it doesn't work, I'm not out of pocket too much anyway Cheers for responding
Three thoughts: 1- the NTG sounds so much richer in the super scientific test. 2- I'm a little bummed the super scientific tests aren't consistently delivered in 4:3 VHS effect. 3- Three weeks ago I got the exact same tripod you're using in your studio. I guess the Fx3 can't function without it.
1. Right?! 2. I actually filmed this video BEFORE the other one. All future scientific tests must be in the science-friendly 4:3 aspect ratio. 3. They should just sell it as a kit 😁
When I first got the VM GO II, I wasn’t expecting to love it… but I do. It’s so awesome and amazingly versatile. Like you, I have also been using it a lot as a USB mic. Great video!
I absolutely love my Videomic NTG; it’s a really exceptional mic, especially for all of its versatility. About the issue of the rechargeable battery: be very sure to register the mic with RODE to up the warranty to 10 years. The company mentioned to me that should anything happen with its battery during normal use, it can replace it so long as it’s under warranty. So yeah, do that. Thanks for the excellent video.
Rode's warranty service is awesome! They've definitely bailed me out a few times even out of warranty (and this was pre-RUclips so I had zero connection to them). I think my bigger issue is the environmental impact, but if they have a way of replacing batteries without tossing the entire unit, that would be fantastic.
I started recommending this to teachers/faculty. Teachers just want a mic to work across phone, computer and camera. It was so difficult trying to explain which works where, mainly cuz they don’t care about tech lol which is fine, they just want something to work dang it.
I'm always excited for affordable/simple recommendations like this. Plus the compact size keeps it from feeling intimidating to someone who's not super familiar with this stuff.
I bought the Rode VideoMic Go II a few weeks ago as my travel mic. The small form factor, lack of battery, and good sound quality were all factors that helped me decide to buy one. I do use my Rode VideoMic Pro + as my main studio mic, but I’m glad that I won’t be traveling with it anymore. As far as my little Rode VideoMicro…it’s now retired to be a backup mic that I’ll keep in a bag just in case.
This is amazing review. Honestly to me the Rode NTG is the best option. One thing I hate about it is the fact you can't replace the battery. It would be amazing if you could unscrew like a flashlight and in case of emergency, battery died and you don't have time to change it, you can just put in a "non" rechargeable battery. Or if the battery starts dying, so you can put a new "rechargeable" battery.
Considering that there is a whole industry around replacing batteries in smartphones (iFixit) where you have to heat up the screen and disassemble a lot of delicate parts to get to the battery, I'm confident that we will figure out how to replace the battery on the NTG, even if it's not officially sanctioned.
I have both the NTG and the Go ii. I have not been able to determine a significant sound difference. I like the options available on the NTG, especially the attenuation. I shoot multicam live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. I have two GH5s, one GH5 ii, and one GH6. The NTG was perfect for the original GH5s as they only allow you to attenuate the signal to -12 db. The GH5 ii, and the GH6 can attenuate to -18 db. The Go ii is a very hot mic so this ability of the GH5 ii, and the GH6 made it very suitable. I really appreciate the fact that the Go ii does not have a battery which means that I have one less thing to think about. My Rode NTG has quit and I'm hoping to get it fixed; however, in the mean time I purchased a second Go ii. I also record directly from the sound board on an audio recorder and I use a Sound Devices Mix Pre 3 and a Rode NT4 on the edge of the stage. I also use the Audio Technica AT4073a and the Panasonic DMW-MS2. Rode replaced my Rode VideoMic NTG with a brand new one even though it was 3 years old. The NTG has a 10 year warranty.
Bro you've made every comparison under the sun and I love you for it. I've googled a couple of different comparisons today and your channel has popped up for all of them.
As an Aussie I’m super proud of Røde’s reputation and as owner of a NTG I can’t fault it except for its length. Sometimes gets into my shots when mounted in a GoPro Hero7 but that’s it. Reason I found this video was I was surprised that the GoII had usb support which made me wonder why I went the NTG in the first place. I decided to invest in good mic for my voiceOver content and have NOT regretted it. Only now when using my shotgun for streaming it can get in the way of camera. BUT as Tom says, that’s MY problem. Not the mic’s.
The advantage of a shorter mic is that the capsule can be brought closer to the source without entering the frame. It also helps eliminate phase issues indoors especially in untreated rooms.
The usb-c is awesome. Can’t tell you how many times I forgot to turn my old video mic pro on bc I was trying to save the 9v battery during long recording days. Loving the Buck Blue watch band btw.
Oh those 9v days were terrible. There was no way to know if you were about to run out of power and it was always tough to find extra batteries if needed. And that band is what sealed the deal on the Apple Watch for me back in 2016 😁
Fantastic! Since I’ve sold all my full frame cameras…I’ve been *wondering* about a good mic to use when I want to go out…but I don’t want the mic to be BIGGER than the camera. 🤷♀️ Thanks for showing us this and even a little comparison! Now I feel it’s a great fit!
I haven't seen it anywhere else either, but it's been such a game changer! It's the iFootage Support Rod going into one of their quick release thingies that just fits right in the tripod head's 5/8" mount. 👍 It's cool because the mic stays out of frame even if the camera moves.
@@tombuck Can you say a little bit more about this? I need a boom arm setup as well and I liked the look of what you had in your video however I don't know what the parts are to purchase/put together.
@@tombuckI also have the Rodecaster Pro II and as of yesterday the NTG. Have you tried connecting them together? If so do you use the USB or are you using the new 3.5mm --> XL converter?
I have both a Rode NTG and a Rode VideoMic Go II. When my NTG quit, I purchased another VideoMic Go II while I waited for Rode to fix it. They couldn’t fix it so they replaced it with a new one. I like the fact that the VideoMic doesn’t have a battery. I think there is very little difference between the NTG and the VideoMic in terms of the sound. The NTG gives you more control but I use two GH5’s one GH5 Mk2, and one GH6 and I don’t need these features. I shoot live theatre, concerts, and dance shows with multiple cameras.
The Go II is very impressive in how it stacks up. I think the active nature of the NTG gives it a bit more reach, but if your subject is relatively close, then it doesn't make as much of a different. Bummer that your mic died, but I'm glad you found a good solution!
Used the Go II for the first time today for a livestream and holy moly. What an incredible little microphone. I almost want to say the sound is buttery vs the iMac’s built in sound. Thank you for the great review. It helped me make my decision and I love how easily I can hook it up to my iPhone and iPad as well.
the NTG sounded clearer, the VideoMic Go II sounded a bit more muddled but considering the price difference it sounds great and a bit of EQ would minimise that.
@@tombuck I thought about it but I bought it used on eBay. The person actually sent me a Rose cable that wasn’t even the right one, lol. I’ll buy a new one this time. Thanks, Tom.
I find that the NTG is richer when I listen with headphone (not with speaker). But for overall I think the difference is so minimal its not really worth the price difference.
Awesome video, Tom! I love me GO 2. It currently lives on my top down camera, which has an added advantage of having scratch audio that is so good, I'd feel totally comfortable using it as main audio if for whatever reason my main mic craps out 👌
Thank you, I have been researching for a few days on what Mic to get for my multiple setups for on the go filming and your video is the reason why I have decided on the NTG!!!! Your page is awesome, I really enjoy your videos and always super helpful when I am looking to upgrade my equipment
Thanks! I have the NTG and this actually convinced me that I should go ahead and get a GO II. When you go back to back, the NTG is obviously better by a mile, but I've been using the Sennheiser MKE 200 instead of the NTG on my desk because I can leave it plugged in without worrying about power. It seems like the GO II gets a decent amount of performance while being very compact and convenient.
if you like the Go II, there are many chinese mics out there that are much cheaper with the sound quality. Mics like Go II are cheap to make, there's no battery, no gain, no headphone jack, just a small mic capsule and a housing. Don't get suck into the hype. At 1 feet from your face, all mics sound good.
16:47 To me, in the outdoor audio, the low frequencies were more present in the NTG. Indoors, the lows sounded more present in the Go II. I don’t know if that had anything to do with your EQ or maybe the sound in the room? Just an interesting observation. I’m looking for the one that has a full, almost boomy sound , but not overwhelming the clarity of the higher ranges.
Hi Tom! I have been enjoying lots of your educational RUclips videos, and from what I learned watching it, I got a Rode VideoMic GO II for my Zoom training and meetings. I am super happy with my purchase, and I believe I have saved many unnecessary mistakes thanks to you. I remembered I saw one video where you showed a very short interview with Allen Williams. He mentioned the importance of spending a big part of our budget on treating the room to get the best sound quality versus spending most of the money getting an expensive mic. I have been trying to look for that particular RUclips video, but I can not find it. Can you please let me know which specific video is that so I can revisit it? TQ!
Perfect timing because my Deity V-Mic D3 Pro internal battery won't charge and the company will not help exchange the defective microphone. Great video!
Ugh, that's frustrating. Usually Deity has great service, so I'm surprised to hear that. It's definitely nice that this little mic has no battery to worry about 👍
@@tombuck This was my first time purchasing a Deity product and it's been over 3 weeks since I submitted my claim and still no response. Will stick with rode! Have a Rodecaster Pro and a PodMic for Office and now will add a GO II to my collection!
I needed as compact microphone as possible as it's meant to be connected to my phone and be ready to be drawn from my pocket at any given time outside, so I bought the Go II. No regrets, it's amazing mic in the terms of sound quality & compactness, although the NTG beats the Go II in sound easily. Also bought a dead cat (WS12 Windshield) to go with it. Very cool setup. Thanks for the informative video with plenty of audio tests!
Finally got hold of a pair of the video mic go II s for my students to work on podcasts with Rode Connect and to make vlogs. Together with 2 Rode NT minis they can learn how to plan, record and mix podcasts with relatively cheap gear. They’re not getting their hands on my SM7B, Podmics and Rodecaster Pro………as that’s my own gear not my University’s…..
I cant ever get my VideoMic NTG to sound NEARLY as good, crisp and clear as yours does. I would love to see a tutorial on how you set these mics up with settings ect. Here recently I've been running it directly to my PC and using audacity to record so I can export as 32bit float but still can't quite get something in the settings right. I always get frustrated and go back to my RODe Wireless Go's. Considering the cost I would love to use it more often.
Neat little mic. Seems like a vlogy kinda mic. I have the Deity D4 Duo vlogy mic which is also pretty nice but has a fair amount of wind pickup as well as transfer through the shock mic for bumps and thumps and such. Someone is going to have to do a Deity D4 Duo vs Video Mic Go II comparison one day. 😉
Great review, Tom! I just bought a wireless go II and I’m curious if the quality will be similar with the stick adapter, when using for desk voiceovers.
Ohh that's a good question! I have the original Wireless Go, and I think in a side-by-side comparison it sounds pretty similar to this mic, it's the Videomic having a slight edge. But the Wireless systems are designed to be close to you, which does always help things to sound a bit better in my opinion.
Man this is soo strange. I purchased my Videomic Go II in Australia, and the Microphone is made of metal, as is the base plate. At least I think it is, I think it's Aluminium?
Ok, I thought I was loosing my mind, the mic should be metal. With the quality of plastic finishes now, it can be so hard to tell lightweight metal from plastic . From Rodes Website "VideoMic GO II packs a punch, with a professional-grade shockmount and high-quality windshield included, rugged all-metal body, and renowned RØDE build quality"
Hmm, maybe I’m wrong in that case…mine just doesn’t feel or handle heat/cold the same way as the NTG at all 🤷🏻♂️ But I can often be wrong about things.
@@tombuck I felt the same, trying to work out if it was plastic or metal. I’m thinking maybe it is made of aluminium, or it’s the paint coating or something, but mine doesn’t feel cold like the other metal things in my studio either.
By the way, watching your videos and explanations makes my purchase diction of all my Rode products, I can't even count how many i got, thanks for every single of them Tommy
I'm happy to hear that! I didn't realize how much Rode stuff I had until I started making videos about it. And now that they occasionally send me stuff like this mic it's only gotten worse...and by worse I mean better. 😁
VideoMic Go II sounds 99% as good as the NTG for your talking head indoor video and perfect for Zoom calls, Teams meetings over USB-C. The best way to use the VideoMic Go II with a new iPhone or iPad is via USB-C, I wouldn't bother with TRS or TRRS as mentioned at 9:20. I wish it came with a 3/8 to 1/4 mount adapter included in the box to use with the mini manfrotto tripods as you have.
I liked the NTG, but transcended to SVMX. Stereo is magnificent, and if someone tries to mug me I can take it off the camera and bludgeon them with it. Still has a pretty small footprint too. Plus, the red X goes with the red G :3
Great video Tom! Two items: 1. Both mics: Any issue with using a 8' or 10' cable from mic to my Canon m50 camera? 2. As a backup, can I record (USB to PC) while at same time connect mic cable to my Canon m50?
Great video. Just in time, too. I've been pondering the Go II vs. the NTG. Ordering the NTG now 🙂 Also, happy to see my name as the latest addition to your Channel Supporter screen. You produce really worthwhile and useful content.
Thanks Bruce! I appreciate the support! Dollar for dollar, the NTG is basically impossible to beat (I mean, there's definitely a reason I have two of them 😁 ).
If you search “microphone spacer” on Amazon you can get a little rubber collar that fits around it and then it mounts perfectly in the handle. They’re very cheap too 👍
Love this review. I purchased the Go II as a quick, cheap mic for my new R6 Mark II... hoping to use the Wireless Go II system to have the connectivity to do interviews with a boom. Any suggestions for placement as doesn't have quite the reach the NTG has?
No real tricks for placement other than as close as possible without being in the frame. I typically start with a 45 degree angle pointing toward the speaker's chest and then adjust as needed from there. Thanks for the kind words!
Great video, Tom as always. Please tell me what arm are you using to hang the videomic ntg and videomicro over your head out of sight. It looks like it connected to a manfrotto tripod. Thanks.
Another wonderful Video! I purchased the Go II awhile back and I have been loving it. I love what you said about user error. I feel like if you dial it in it’s wonderful! When I use it, you may hear flaws and that is definitely user error! 😂
Haha you're exactly right! Mic reviews are tough because I know that a lot of times the equipment probably isn't being used in the most optimal way and I want to give as helpful of an example as possible. But I also figure that, hey this how these things are going to be used in the hands of normal people like me, so it's still valid.
I just picked up the video mic go 2 and have been recording some narration using rode central. I then transfer as wav or mp3 to editing software or music recording software to edit further. Super simple interface and the mic sounds great. Frees up room on my desk and let’s me concentrate on my content a little better.
I've been using the VideoMicGOII for nearly two months now. So far, so good. I like the headphone monitoring feature and the Rycote-style shock mounts.
@@tombuck thanks for replying - i recored in 4k to sd directly in my 3 cameras - and tried the ecamm recording ( i play music) so its a little bit lags in my hands motions so i gave up hhhh is it normal this lag with ecam 4 k recording?
Oh yes. The NTG has a subtle depth projection that outperforms the GO II. The latter has this high mid punch probably due to the size, maybe even because of the plastic body. This was, however, most obvious when tested outdoors. It's also easy to edit that audio and make it a bit smoother on the GO II. Definitely a fantastic value for the money. Kudos to your recording settings that truly showed all aspects of these mics.
The GO II feels like it's made out of metal, however it's lighter than the VideoMicro which makes it feel cheaper even though it's objectively better in every way except size.
Awesome video! I was looking for a good alternative to a lav mic to use with my laptop when I'm doing videos while not at home. Based on your video, the GO II with no battery to worry about and arguably comparable sound to the NTG make it a clear winner for my uses. Thanks for the great comparison!
Hi Tom I'm curious about how you power the NTG microphone. Is it possible to power via USB at the same time as the sound goes analog directly to the camera / Atem Mini. I have a fixed setup for teaching via MS Teams with teleprompter and a PodMic, but want to get the microphone out of the picture. My setup will be on 8-10 hours every day. My choice is between Røde NTG and NT5. I hope you will answer my question, I can't find it anywhere. Thanks in advance.
Wish the mount was bright cherry red! Doesn't help with the old "stealth" approach, eh? BTW, I have the Video Mic NTG, as well as about a dozen other RØDE mics. :)
Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos, Tom. Two questions, is that an Earthworks Ethos on the boom arm that you briefly swung into view? Also, odd question, can you tell me the dimensions of your studio? Looks like it’s maybe a standard bedroom perhaps 11 or 12 feet square.
Thanks Todd! 1. Yep, it's an Earthworks, but it's actually the ICON wearing the ETHOS windscreen. 2. My studio is basically 12x12, just a standard spare bedroom size.
Hi Tom can you make a comparison video between the Rode Video MicGo II and the all new Rode VideoMicro II? Looking forward to this if you can make one!
Excellent video, thank you! I ended up getting both for multiple scenarios! Could you tell me what is the mini tripod you have holding the mics on your desk?
You might have convinced me to add one to my setup right above my monitors for when I don’t want the lewitt in view or switching between camera angles!!
I don't think I've seen on youtube better light, color and detail and bokeh in a picture like this sitting at a desk. Do you have a video of you sharing your lighting scheme? What's the lens here? I want to look this good on my work video calls with my dudes.
@@tombuck Oh Tom, there are so many light sources, looks complicated to me 🙈 Can I ask for some advice? I switched from working on just a macbook pro to an external large ultrawide and now the webcam issue has come up. I don't see the point of giving 300 dollars for the coolest webcam and still get a flat picture or fake bokeh. So I went for an entry-level setup for a youtuber/streamer: ZV-E10 + Sigma 16mm 1.4 + Rode VideoMic NTG. What do you think? I'm not sure about the lens. I have a table 80 cm / 31 inch deep and a wall behind it. I want a close up portrait view for calls and bokeh like yours. Some people recommend Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 but it seems to have weaker bokeh. Give me advice please, am I on the right track? (cursor on the checkout button)
The ZV-E10 + sigma 16 is my go-to recommendation 👍 On a crop sensor like the ZV-E10, you'll get roughly the same filed of view as I have here with a 24mm lens on a full frame camera. 1.4 makes a HUGE difference vs. 2.8
Have you done any sound effects processing on the RODE NTG that is used for outdoor recording? Because my NTG is at about the same distance from you outdoors, but the background sound is not as quiet as in your video. I also connected it to the camera and used it.
It gets power from the 3.5mm cable. I've only had interference issues when using cheap extension cables, never with the official Rode cables (that goes for other mics too).
hey Tom, thx for this review... quick remark/question about the videomic go... I tried to use it indoor and had a lot of problems, because it's picking up a lot of electromagnetic fields, so you have a lot of interference, whether it's the wi-fi or the cellular, or even any gear working, (like a comp), how do you manage to avoid or neutralise those terrible noises ?
In my experience, interference has come down to using low quality cables. If you're using the official Rode cables and having those problems, then that's definitely strange and I'd recommend reaching out to their customer support team. I've had interference issues when using off-brand extension cables to boom the mics, but I've never had issues with the official Rode cables, so I just stick with those.
I bought the Diety D4 mini a while back after watching DSLR video shooters video about it, but now I’m almost wishing I bought this mic instead! Have you compared the two at all?
Awesome review! I'm considering buying one of them to record nature sounds, like birds and other animals, but i can't decide if it's necessary to buy NTG for that or if the Go II will be as good. Have you tried them for that purpose?
Hello, I am new here… Great video, btw! I would like to ask, for podcast with 3-4 people, should I get with Rode Wireless go 2 or Rode videomic go 2? Thank you!! 🙏🏽
Hi Jojo! That's a bit of a tricky question. In general it's tough to have people share a mic without sacrificing audio quality. It gets even trickier with USB mics, but fortunately Rode does have the free Connect app which will let you use multiple Rode USB mics together. With that in mind, the Wireless Go is great if you can attach it to a single person. The Video mic might be able to capture multiple people if they're squished real close together, but in general getting a separate mic for each person is always best.
Just like with the Sennheiser, they're both great. If the Pro + is suiting your needs, I don't think the NTG is going to have better sound quality. But the strength of the NTG is that I find it easier to get good sound quality, especially because of the gain dial on the back. I do have a video that compares the Pro + and the NTG if you want to hear them side by side.
Since the USB-C port on the NTG allows for connecting to a PC, I guess it is charging while in use. So when the internal battery eventually fails to hold a charge, it can be used as a PC USB mic.
I had to pause and wait till my laughter stopped. The words "piece of garbage", the whoosh sound and the cameo of the Neewer mic got me SO hard and SO unprepared...😂🤣🤣
I personally wish Rode would stop using RED as their highlights. It draws so much attention and defeats the low profile vibe… the only RED you should be seeing off your camera is the record button.
Actually, I'm having a plan to get a Rode VideoMic GO II for my future vids, But with my limited budget... I have 2 mics, One is the Boya BY-MM1 (I brought it back in 2019) and Another one is A 7RYMS Minbo Mini... (Brought in November 2021) They both sounds really good and it makes a "Bit" of difference between the audio quality... My Boya one is separated for my camcorder and a 7RYMS one is for some of my cameras that I used the most to record my most of the vids... Oh, Probably my old 2015 Samsung Galaxy A7 that I have with me... But, Tbh. My 7RYMS Minibo Mini does sounds very good and also it is used in the most of my videos. (I'm "Still" currently using it) Until I have enough money to buy that Rode Mic that you have talkin' about... And still also having my plan to get a new better camera and upgrades for my Samsung Galaxy A7 that i was talking about... and oh, My camcorder too... which I would have to wait... Until I have more money on my budget to buy them... And I would use them as much as my quality on my YT vids may rise... And also... I'm a new subscriber... from Thailand... Greetings from Thailand! =) /🇹🇭 /
I need help to pic an XLR shotgun mic, for filmmaking. Price is not the main factor , but I dont want to spend more than I need to have good sound on the movies, while we're still an independent film production group. Can you help us chose the right one? We'll be recording the sound on a Tascam Portacapture X8
My personal favorite is the Sennheiser MKH50. It’s amazing. Outdoor work might be better with the MKH416 though. If those are beyond your budget, I think the Audio Technica AT897 is a really underrated option.
As you know I like Rode Mic's, I have a need for a Mic that I can talk into while holding the camera. I find the NTG too big so this may work and it's the right price and size. Hey, can you test something? Do you have one of those Rode cables that allows you to hook up two mics to your camera? Put the NTG pointing forward and the Go II toward the back of the camera? I use a cage with my camera so I have the places to mount two mics...
Hey Tom, nice extended review! and my compliments for your studio and lightning! I have just a doubt on the review, on my medium range sound bar with a big subwoofer, I can't really ear any difference in the audio coming from this 2 mics... is that normal?
No that’s a good thing! It’s impressive that the mics are really close in quality. There’s a much bigger difference in more extreme environments, but when things are set up well and you’re close to the mic, it’s great. That being said, Deity’s new V-Mic D4 might have an edge over the small Rode because it does have some of the NTG features for the same price.
Great video as always. Excellent comparisons. I think I need both 😁. On a side note can you remind me what fonts you are using? Are they all had drawn or have you found something comparable?
I realized that when I said this mic replaced the original VideoMic Go, I was actually thinking of and describing the VideoMicro. I guess I should go get my micro mics in a row.
Hey Tom I have the go two, and what I would like to know: when you did your outdoors lab coat exercise did you clean up the background noise on the go 2 or it just sounds that good?

Tip for Rode: Make a version of this mic targeted specifically at 'work from home' people looking to improve their audio. Include a clip attachment for use at the top of a laptop screen or monitor so people could attach it right next to their webcam.
This is an absolutely awesome travel mic. I'm happy to hear it's been working out for you!
I really wish you could swap the battery. Other than that the NTG is my most-often recommended video mic.
The NTG has a 10 year warranty.
easily the best review i've watched. love the humor, conciseness, thoroughness, structure, and dog. 5/5
Thank you! Really means a lot to hear this, much appreciation for taking the time to share some kind words 🙏
Bro you've made every comparison under the sun and I love you for it. I've googled a couple of different comparisons today and your channel has popped up for all of them.
That’s crazy to hear! I’m glad they’ve been helpful 💪
I always appreciate it when the equipment is so good I know any problems are 100% my fault 😁
The advantage of a shorter mic is that the capsule can be brought closer to the source without entering the frame. It also helps eliminate phase issues indoors especially in untreated rooms.
why not just get a dynamic microphone and be done with it. There's no need to fuss over phase issues.
The fact that you did even something as simple as throwing in that Voiceover Gem won me over! Awesome video Tom! New Subscriber here!
It's a great one and you really can't go wrong for the price 👍
That boom extension off the fluid head is a brilliant hack. why have I not seen this in 15 yrs of production and countless youtube consumption? Bravo.
I haven't seen it anywhere else either, but it's been such a game changer! It's the iFootage Support Rod going into one of their quick release thingies that just fits right in the tripod head's 5/8" mount. 👍
It's cool because the mic stays out of frame even if the camera moves.
Pretty amazing right! I’m glad you had a good experience.
Can we connect rode video mic 2 with iPhone ?
wait till you hook it up to a smartphone and you'll find that it's not so good. The pre amps from your phone is crap and it will sound crap.
the NTG sounded clearer, the VideoMic Go II sounded a bit more muddled but considering the price difference it sounds great and a bit of EQ would minimise that.
My NTG died on me but I wasn't sold on the Go II. Gonna buy another NTG. Thanks, Tommy Boy!
Have you reached out to Rode support? They're usually good about replacements if it's defective.
It currently lives on my top down camera, which has an added advantage of having scratch audio that is so good, I'd feel totally comfortable using it as main audio if for whatever reason my main mic craps out 👌
Absolutely! It's always awesome to have that peace of mind.
Absolutely! Especially since you’ve already got the NTG, you’ll have all the bases covered. 👍
if you like the Go II, there are many chinese mics out there that are much cheaper with the sound quality.
Wow great one, Tom! I’ve been looking at the NTG lately and you sealed it for me! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! The NTG is an absolute winner.
I was looking for a new mic and it was between these two at first. But in the end i got the sony ecm-b1m and the auto gain is soOooooo nice to have.
That’s a super sweet mic! I’m always amazed at how good it sounds when I see people using it.
Absolutely a perfect choice for student use 👍
I cant ever get my VideoMic NTG to sound NEARLY as good, crisp and clear as yours does. I would love to see a tutorial on how you set these mics up with settings ect. Here recently I've been running it directly to my PC and using audacity to record so I can export as 32bit float but still can't quite get something in the settings right. I always get frustrated and go back to my RODe Wireless Go's. Considering the cost I would love to use it more often.
I agree completely. Would love such a video.
Hey buddy, how did you boom that arm from your tripod? Seems like a cool setup so please add links. Thanks
I’ve been looking at all kinds of mics for my videos and I think the Go II is what I’m going to get after watching this video. Thanks Tom!
It's really tough to beat for the price!
Great review. How would you compare it to the DJI mic? While one is wireless and more expensive what about the sound quality?
They’re in pretty different categories, both in terms of features and price. I haven’t used the DJI myself, but it seems to be pretty nifty.
My favourite mic was the original go, super cool 😎
Man this is soo strange. I purchased my Videomic Go II in Australia, and the Microphone is made of metal, as is the base plate. At least I think it is, I think it's Aluminium?
Ok, I thought I was loosing my mind, the mic should be metal. With the quality of plastic finishes now, it can be so hard to tell lightweight metal from plastic . From Rodes Website "VideoMic GO II packs a punch, with a professional-grade shockmount and high-quality windshield included, rugged all-metal body, and renowned RØDE build quality"
Hmm, maybe I’m wrong in that case…mine just doesn’t feel or handle heat/cold the same way as the NTG at all 🤷🏻♂️
But I can often be wrong about things.
If you like the Go II, check out the Boya mic, it's half the price and sounds just about the same as the Go II
I liked the NTG, but transcended to SVMX.
Stereo is magnificent, and if someone tries to mug me I can take it off the camera and bludgeon them with it. Still has a pretty small footprint too.
Plus, the red X goes with the red G :3
"Transcended" - I'm going to steal this one. No more upgrades for me! Now I transcend 🙏
@@tombuck Yessss.
Great video Tom! Two items:
1. Both mics: Any issue with using a 8' or 10' cable from mic to my Canon m50 camera?
2. As a backup, can I record (USB to PC) while at same time connect mic cable to my Canon m50?
Great video. Just in time, too. I've been pondering the Go II vs. the NTG. Ordering the NTG now 🙂
Also, happy to see my name as the latest addition to your Channel Supporter screen. You produce really worthwhile and useful content.
Thanks Bruce! I appreciate the support! Dollar for dollar, the NTG is basically impossible to beat (I mean, there's definitely a reason I have two of them 😁 ).
Thanks for this amazing video. Does RODE video mic Go II compatible with iphone?
Yes, as long as you've got a proper USB C adapter 👍
Okay. Thank you! Can I use TRS to TRRS converter and that connects to 3.5mm headphone jacket to lightning cable to iphone? Will that work?
What’s the best way to fix this mic onto the Sony FX3 XLR handle?
Thanks.
Tom did a studio tour a few weeks ago where he shows exactly what he’s using for this: ruclips.net/video/dO3QZBnxhTA/видео.html
@@AaronAbernethy thank you
Great review! What kind of mini tripod are you using when the mic is on the desk? 🤔
TONS of great info, if these are shotgun mics, why did you review them on the desk? Does this defeat the purpose? I need an overhead non-xlr mic.
Great video, what are you using to boom your mics?
I have an iFootage arm attached to the head of my tripod. I love it!
I am digging the NTG more I find but I love the size of the Go ll you're right the bigger the mic the more you get looks lol
The NTG is an absolute champ, but it's tough to go wrong with something so small and compact!
Yes! The ability to monitor yourself on a mic this small is awesome.
15:30 Watch out Bill Nye the Science guy. You’re about to be replaced! 😆
thanks for this video - do you recored into ecamm ?
I record my videos directly to the SD card for maximum resolution/bit depth, plus I'm paranoid. 😬
@@tombuck thanks for replying - i recored in 4k to sd directly in my 3 cameras - and tried the ecamm recording ( i play music) so its a little bit lags in my hands motions so i gave up hhhh is it normal this lag with ecam 4 k recording?
This was a great and very comprehensive review. It helped me make my decision on upgrading from the trusty VideoMic Pro for the past 8 years.
So glad to hear that! Hope you enjoy the new mic 👍
Thanks for the reivews! I'm getting the Videomic NTG for my run and gun shooting. Cheers :3
Nice! It's such a great mic and all of the versatility + quality make it pretty much the best value out there.
@@tombuck Awesome! I picked one up; can't wait to open it test it, but duty calls and I need to prepare and shoot every bit of the process xD
Awesome video! I was looking for a good alternative to a lav mic to use with my laptop when I'm doing videos while not at home. Based on your video, the GO II with no battery to worry about and arguably comparable sound to the NTG make it a clear winner for my uses. Thanks for the great comparison!
Hi Tom
I'm curious about how you power the NTG microphone.
One of them is the Manfrotto Pixi (my favorite mini tripod) and the other one is from Rode (they sent it over with the mic).
@@tombuck Thank you! I like the look of the Pixi and I think it'll be great for my GoPro. I appreciate the help!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I try to do a studio tour video each year, so here's the most recent one: ruclips.net/video/EPqxRz1RT-A/видео.html
The ZV-E10 + sigma 16 is my go-to recommendation 👍
On a crop sensor like the ZV-E10, you'll get roughly the same filed of view as I have here with a 24mm lens on a full frame camera. 1.4 makes a HUGE difference vs. 2.8
Thanks for this comparison! So awesome to know about options and get some scientific tests ;) Rode makes some really amazing products!
Gotta be super scientific with it.
I think the go2 is the best for my iPhones and go pros etc
It's a really solid mic!
Have you done any sound effects processing on the RODE NTG that is used for outdoor recording? Because my NTG is at about the same distance from you outdoors, but the background sound is not as quiet as in your video. I also connected it to the camera and used it.
For USB, I can also recommend the RØDE NT-USB Mini. Just sayin'. That's what I use for all my Zoom sessions, etc.
Yes! That's a great one too. Love the little magnetic stand.
great video. i have the same ntg videomic and i want to do shortfilms, what audio recorder you recommen me?
if you're looking for a USB podcast / zoom / voice recording mic - go 2 is the one. Just bought it and honestly, I'm planning to sell my mkh 416
Great 2 little mic's, I wonder if the gain of WirelessGo is good enough to pair it with WirelessGo? for a wireless boom?
Does the VideoMic Go II get power via the 3.5mm cable? Or does it need power via USB? Did you have any issues with interference?
It gets power from the 3.5mm cable. I've only had interference issues when using cheap extension cables, never with the official Rode cables (that goes for other mics too).
Great review! I had no idea that this nifty little mic was a thing. Definitely could use one
Thanks CJ! It's been super handy to have as part of my setup and I've been using it a lot more than expected 👍
Hey Tom! Would really appreciate it if you could make a review between the Rode Videomic Go II vs the new Rode Videomicro II!
Just the video i was looking for! Thanks for this
So glad to hear it! I was literally using this mic for a quick VoiceOver when you left this comment 😁
hey Tom, thx for this review...
quick remark/question about the videomic go... I tried to use it indoor and had a lot of problems, because it's picking up a lot of electromagnetic fields, so you have a lot of interference, whether it's the wi-fi or the cellular, or even any gear working, (like a comp),
how do you manage to avoid or neutralise those terrible noises ?
In my experience, interference has come down to using low quality cables. If you're using the official Rode cables and having those problems, then that's definitely strange and I'd recommend reaching out to their customer support team.
I've had interference issues when using off-brand extension cables to boom the mics, but I've never had issues with the official Rode cables, so I just stick with those.
Yikes - NTG by a 1.000 miles!!! Great review - but definitely a bad review for GO II. Had higher hopes for it.
They're both great, but the NTG will give you a bit more quality and reach if it's within your budget.
Thanks for sharing. Have you tried using it to record a live performance of a band?
I haven't! I doubt it'd give "CD quality" but if you're not too close to the speakers it should do a decent job.
@@tombuck Thanks for the prompt reply. I am wondering if it’s better than the built in mic on my iPhone
@@tombuck But what If it is for video podcast? should I also go with the videomic go 2? or the wireless lavalier? Thank you, sir.
Videos mic pro + vs the ntg? Is it worth getting the ntg over the pro +? I have the pro +
That's true, the USB functionality should always continue to work.
I had to pause and wait till my laughter stopped. The words "piece of garbage", the whoosh sound and the cameo of the Neewer mic got me SO hard and SO unprepared...😂🤣🤣
I always aim for subtle 😉
The Rode Video Mic Go 2 sounds great!
I'm always impressed with Rode!
how would we upgrade our audio with XLR seems you would need a Cinema camera with built in xlr or a top handle
so what setting did you use? Did you change the Go II settings? High pass or anything or as it is shipped? They both sound good.
I didn't change any settings on the mic, everything is straight out of camera with no processing 👍
@@tombuck I just got one two days ago. With my Videomic NTG for interviews I've set the high pass at 75. In your test the two mics really sound close.
I personally wish Rode would stop using RED as their highlights. It draws so much attention and defeats the low profile vibe… the only RED you should be seeing off your camera is the record button.
I like it since I like bright colors, but you're right, in those times when you want to blend in it kind of does the exact opposite.

Hey Tom we got the same tripod. I call it « The Anvil » 🤣🤣
I got a Sachtler for outdoor shootings, the Manfrotto is à pain in the butt to carry
I’d love a Sachtler one day, but this tripod has been fantastic for me so far!
I don't have one of those cables, but that's a super interesting idea!
@@tombuck Thank you for the reply a Tom!🙏🏻 you plan to review the DJI Mic?
Great video as always. Excellent comparisons. I think I need both 😁. On a side note can you remind me what fonts you are using? Are they all had drawn or have you found something comparable?
Tom draws it all himself - he has a couple of videos about how he does that.l, like this one: ruclips.net/video/7K91QZxmxII/видео.html
Great Video Tom! what are you using to monitor the fx3 on your desktop monitor?
I just run it through Ecamm Live 👍
